The Queen's Mage

Chapter 160: Unfinished Hems

Callene measured time in unfinished hems.

Calendars claimed there were three days until First Sun. The stack of garments waiting for final stitching insisted there were perhaps twelve working hours.

She trusted the garments.

The workroom had surrendered any hope of neatness sometime last week.

Dress forms crowded every corner. Rolls of velvet leaned against walls. Half-finished embroidery stretched across frames large enough to serve as dining tables. Apprentices moved around one another with practiced precision, carrying pins, thread, ribbon, chalk, and occasionally cups of tea that were usually forgotten before they cooled.

Queen Allandra’s First Sun gown stood nearest the windows. Deep forest green velvet. Gold embroidery still unfinished at the cuffs.

Beside it, folded with almost ceremonial care, rested the white fur cloak that would be fastened over the Queen’s shoulders before dawn.

Prince Hagen’s formal coat occupied the neighboring form.

One cuff remained pinned.

He had changed his mind.

Again.

Princess Everly’s little green boots sat safely on the highest shelf after an unfortunate misunderstanding involving blue dye and curiosity.

Callene had been preparing for First Sun for nearly four months.

She had schedules.

Lists.

Three apprentices.

Two master seamstresses.

One increasingly complicated relationship with sleep.

Everything had been proceeding exactly as expected.

Then the palace had become strange.

Queen Allandra had postponed two fittings.

Not cancelled.

Postponed.

Callene had dressed the Queen for years. Two postponed fittings in a single week was unprecedented.

Prince Hagen had missed one fitting entirely before arriving at the next looking immaculate and exhausted in equal measure.

Lady Verya had sent revised measurements by messenger with an apology written in handwriting so precise that Callene immediately concluded she had not slept in days.

Captain Daravan had appeared only long enough to ask whether ceremonial cloaks could conceal armor.

Callene had answered, truthfully, that they could.

He had thanked her. Then disappeared before she could ask why.

The palace had filled with messengers.

Guards.

Closed doors.

People walking quickly without saying where they were going.

Something had happened.

Callene simply hadn’t possessed enough hours to discover what.

The workroom door opened.

Callene smiled automatically. ”Mistress Mara.”

”Mistress Callene.”

Mara stepped inside.

Lady Serali followed her.

Callene blinked.

That...

...was unexpected.

Lady Serali rarely visited the workshop.

She had been measured.

Fitted.

Gently bullied into accepting fifteen gowns she insisted she did not need throughout the winter.

Once the gowns had been delivered, she had proven to be one of the easiest clients Callene had ever dressed.

She rarely requested alterations.

Never changed her mind halfway through a fitting.

If something fit comfortably, she was content.

Her First Sun clothing had already been settled weeks ago.

They had agreed that Lady Serali would wear the smoke blue gown with the silver stars, accompanied by the white ceremonial cloak Callene had already completed.

Comfortable. Elegant. Warm enough for dawn.

The matter had been finished.

Which meant...

Something had become unfinished.

”May we borrow a little of your time?”

Callene glanced around the workroom.

Two apprentices were hand-finishing hems.

Another was carefully attaching pearls to a noblewoman’s sleeves.

No one looked up.

Every one of them was listening.

”You may.”

Mara folded her hands. ”There has been a slight adjustment to First Sun.”

Callene closed her eyes briefly. ”To whose outfit?”

”The Royal Mage’s.”

That seemed manageable. ”The smoke-blue gown?”

”Yes.”

”Needs altering?”

”No.”

Callene opened one eye. ”...Then what?”

”The Royal Mage will be taking a public oath.”

Callene reached automatically for fresh sketch paper and pencil. ”Mm.”

”She will also be giving a public demonstration of shadow magic.”

The pencil stopped. ”...At First Sun?”

”Yes.”

”...Three days from now.”

”Yes.”

Silence spread through the room.

One apprentice quietly set down her needle.

Callene looked from Mara...

...to Serali...

...then back again.

”I’m sorry?”

Mara repeated it.

Calmly.

Patiently.

As though discussing a misplaced ribbon instead of completely rearranging the largest event of Callene’s professional year.

Callene looked slowly around her workshop.

Even the apprentices had stopped pretending not to listen.

Allandra’s gown.

Hagen’s coat.

Everly’s boots.

The white ceremonial cloak.

Half-finished commissions.

Cancelled appointments.

Hurried messengers.

The guards outside the palace had doubled..

The sealed council chamber.

Everything rearranged itself inside her head.

She looked back at Serali. ”This is because of Lyehira.”

Serali nodded once. ”Yes.”

Callene let out a slow breath. ”I wondered…I simply haven’t had enough time to wonder properly.”

Serali smiled apologetically. ”I did tell them the blue gown would be perfectly adequate.”

Callene looked at her. ”I believe you.”

Hope flickered.

Then—

”It isn’t.”

Serali sighed. ”I thought perhaps you wouldn’t say that.”

”I considered it.”

”And?”

”It was chosen for a quiet festival.” Callene looked at her steadily. ”It was not chosen for the day the kingdom decides what to think of you.”

Silence settled. ”I like that dress.”

”I know. I like it too. But it has silver stars.”

Serali blinked. ”...Yes?”

Callene looked at her with profound patience. ”And what colors does Lyehira wear?”

”...Black and silver.”

”And what will every foreign ambassador write home if the Royal Mage stands beneath a shadow canopy wearing silver embroidery?”

Understanding dawned.

”Oh.”

”Precisely.”

Callene pulled the sketch toward herself. ”No silver.”

Mara stepped closer. ”What about Avalusian colors?”

Callene looked almost offended. ”I refuse to dress the Royal Mage like a flag.”

Serali smiled despite herself. ”Thank you.”

”If I wrap you in green, white, and gold...”

”...half the kingdom will applaud.”

”...the other half will accuse the Crown of painting over your history.”

She reached for another sheet.

”The point isn’t that you’ve become Avalusian.”

Her graphite began to move.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author’s consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.

”The point is that you chose Avalusia.”

The silhouette appeared almost impossibly quickly. A few confident lines established Serali’s posture. Another sweep suggested the skirt. The neckline. The sleeves. Before Serali had finished drawing a breath, the bones of an entirely new gown stood on the page.

Callene didn’t pause. ”Mistress Mara.”

”Yes?”

”You once mentioned Princess Everly had a name for Lady Serali’s blue gown.”

Mara smiled immediately. ”’Nice Night.’”

Callene repeated it softly. ”...Nice Night.”

She set the graphite aside and reached for a tray of paints. ”I thought so.”

A broad brush carried a wash of deep blue across the skirt.

She rinsed it once.

Touched violet into the still-wet hem.

The colors flowed together, blooming naturally from twilight into the deepest edge of night.

Serali watched the transformation in silence.

Callene reached for a much finer brush.

This time she dipped it into liquid gold.

Tiny stars appeared across the bodice and one sleeve.

Not scattered.

Placed.

Measured.

Intentional.

Serali tilted her head.

”The stars changed.”

”They had to.”

”They’re gold.”

”They’re dawn.” Callene barely looked up as another constellation bloomed beneath her brush. ”The night is allowed to borrow a little sunlight.”

Another star.

Then another.

”The cloak?” Mara asked.

Callene smiled. ”We keep the white one.”

Serali tilted her head. ”I thought you didn’t want me dressed like Avalusia.”

”I don’t. The white isn’t for the kingdom. It is for First Sun.”

She indicated the sketch. ”The last frost. the first light, the moment before sunrise.”

”And...” She looked toward Serali. ”...it frames the night without swallowing it.”

Then, she turned sharply. ”Elsa.”

One apprentice looked up. ”Yes, Mistress?”

”Go to the Seamstresses’ Guild.”

The girl blinked. ”...Now?”

”Immediately.”

Callene reached beneath the cutting table and produced a heavy leather purse.

The apprentice nearly dropped it. ”Mistress—”

”I require every available hand.” She thought for a moment. ”No. I require every available competent hand. If they are willing to postpone ordinary commissions...”

”...pay them.”

She reached for a second purse. ”If they are unwilling...”

”...pay them more.”

The apprentice stared.

”I need cutters. Finishers. Embroidery specialists. Anyone capable of sewing a straight seam without asking philosophical questions about sleeves.”

The girl nodded vigorously. ”And if the Guildmistress asks why?”

Callene looked toward Serali. ”Tell her the Queen requires a dress.”

Technically that wasn’t inaccurate.

”Go.”

Elsa ran.

Callene looked toward another apprentice. ”Anna.”

”Yes?”

”Cancel everything that isn’t connected to First Sun.”

”The nobles will complain.”

”They certainly will.”

”What should I tell them?”

Callene considered. ”Tell them I apologize.”

A beat.

”Then keep walking.”

She turned back toward Serali. ”Right.”

The measuring tape appeared.

Serali sighed. ”You already have my measurements.”

”I do.”

”I’m still the same size.”

”Probably.”

”You don’t sound convinced.”

”I no longer have the luxury of conviction.”

Serali stood resignedly upon the platform.

Silence settled.

Then—

The workroom door burst open.

”Mistress Callene!”

Marielle hurried inside carrying an alarming quantity of drawings.

Callene didn’t even look up. ”No.”

”I haven’t asked yet.”

”I know. I’ve developed instincts.”

Marielle ignored this. ”My formal jacket.” She unrolled a drawing. ”It needs more pockets.”

Callene closed her eyes. ”...How many?”

”Fifteen.”

The room fell silent again.

”...Fifteen.”

”I’ve optimized the weight distribution.”

Serali looked toward Mara. ”...She’s worse than me.”

”Oh,” Mara agreed immediately. ”Unquestionably.”

Callene pointed toward Serali. ”The Royal Mage argues against embroidery.”

She pointed toward Marielle. ”The Royal Engineer wishes to attend First Sun disguised as municipal storage.”

”It will be elegant.”

”It will contain fifteen pockets.”

”They’re hidden.”

”I noticed.”

Marielle looked pleased. ”Oh good.”

”I wish I hadn’t.”

One apprentice snorted. Another immediately pretended she hadn’t. Callene looked between the two women standing in her workroom.

One wanted fewer details. The other wanted more compartments. Neither appreciated the amount of work required to produce either.

She sighed. ”I miss simpler clients.”

Serali brightened. ”So I’m not the worst?”

Callene considered the question. ”No.”

A beat.

”You’re tied.”

Even Serali laughed.

The sound lingered in the workroom for a moment before fading beneath the scratch of charcoal across fresh paper.

Callene studied the sketch in front of her.

Twilight that fades into violet. Golden constellations. A white fur cloak for the chill before sunrise.

Not a princess.

Not a banner.

Not a prisoner.

Just Serali.

She nodded once. ”All right.”

Everyone looked at her.

”I think...”

She reached for another sheet of paper.

”...let’s get to work.”

The workroom exploded back into motion.

”This one,” she murmured to herself, already sketching a second sleeve variation, ”has to be remembered for the right reasons.”

Outside, the palace hurried toward First Sun.

Inside the workshop, needles flew.

Chapter 161: Controlled Conditions

Marielle reached the East Training Hall before sunrise.

Not because anyone had asked her to.

Because she had awakened with a better solution to the lantern geometry and had correctly concluded that sleep could wait until after she had written it down.

By the time the first rays of morning filtered through the high windows, one entire wall had disappeared beneath chalk.

Not magical diagrams.

Geometry.

Concentric circles marked anticipated crowd density in the palace square. Straight lines radiated from the eastern flame stand. Angles, measurements, estimated sightlines, and careful notes filled every remaining space.

One corner simply read: Children look up first. Adults look where children look.

She underlined it twice.

Then stepped back.

Tilted her head.

Moved one line half a pace.

Better.

The training hall door opened.

Captain Daravan paused just inside.

His eyes traveled slowly across the wall. ”...Have we been invaded by mathematics?”

Marielle looked over her shoulder. ”No.”

”A relief.”

”It was already here.”

He walked closer, studying the diagrams. ”...What am I looking at?”

”The demonstration.”

”I gathered that.”

She pointed to the largest circle. ”This is the audience.”

Another line.

”This is where they’ll think they’re looking.”

Another.

”This is where I actually want them looking.”

Daravan was silent for a moment. ”You’ve calculated where people should stand.”

”Approximately.”

”Why?”

Marielle frowned. ”So they’ll see the demonstration properly.”

”They’ll see it regardless.”

”They’ll see a demonstration.”

She tapped another set of lines. ”I’d like them to see the demonstration.”

”There’s a difference?”

”About seventeen degrees.”

Daravan stared at her. ”I was asking rhetorically.”

”I wasn’t answering rhetorically.”

The hall doors opened.

Serali entered carrying a steaming mug.

Mara walked beside her.

Pell and Orran remained near the entrance.

Serali looked vaguely resigned.

Marielle frowned. ”Why do you look organized?”

Serali answered with one word. ”Mara.”

Mara inclined her head. ”I’ll return for her at midday.”

Marielle blinked. ”...Return?”

”I find schedules reduce the likelihood of Royal Mages forgetting meals.”

”I do not—”

”You do.”

A brief pause.

Serali sighed. ”...I do.”

Mara looked to Marielle. ”She’s yours until lunch.”

Marielle nodded seriously. ”I’ve never been issued a Royal Mage before.”

”I trust you’ll return her in working order.”

”I’ll try.”

Serali looked between them. ”...Am I equipment?”

”No,” Mara said. ”A public asset.”

Then she left.

Serali watched her go. ”...I preferred being a prisoner.”

Mara inclined her head and slipped quietly from the hall.

Marielle watched the door close behind her. ”...Remarkable.”

Serali looked at her. ”What is?”

”She organizes people the way I organize bridges.”

Serali considered that. ”I’m not sure whether to be offended.”

”Don’t be.”

Marielle opened her notebook. ”You’re both extremely well managed.”

She looked toward the chalk-covered wall. ”Now.”

Her smile brightened. ”I have questions.”

Serali looked at the diagrams. ”...I have concerns.”

”Excellent.” Marielle picked up her notebook. ”How large can you comfortably maintain a shadow canopy?”

”I don’t know.”

”We’ll determine that.”

”How dense?”

Serali frowned. ”...Dense?”

”Yes.”

”Shadow isn’t dense.”

”It will be.”

”...According to whom?”

”Me.”

Serali pinched the bridge of her nose. ”I miss when magic was mysterious.”

”I don’t.” Marielle smiled brightly. ”I like measuring it.”

She made a note.

Initial canopy density: unknown.

Another.

Upper expansion limit: unknown.

Another.

Shadow edge coherence? Investigate.

Serali leaned slightly toward the notebook.

”...You’re making my magic sound like bridge construction.”

”Engineering is very flexible.”

Marielle clapped her hands once. ”Now. Let’s get started”

Marielle looked around the East Training Hall with visible resignation.

”The dimensions are close enough.” She sighed. ”I dislike ’close enough.’”

She pointed toward the chalk outline covering the floor. ”This represents the palace square.”

Serali looked down. ”It represents several rectangles.”

”They’re mathematically accurate rectangles.”

”I don’t think the palace square appreciates abstraction.”

”It doesn’t.”

Marielle gestured toward the bucket occupying one corner of the hall. ”This is the eastern flame stand.”

Serali blinked. ”...That’s a bucket.”

”It is temporarily serving as the eastern flame stand.”

”It looks remarkably like a bucket.”

”It continues to perform both functions.”

Serali looked at Daravan. ”Please tell me that wasn’t her first choice.”

Marielle answered before he could. ”Oh, no. My first choice was the actual eastern flame stand.”

Daravan didn’t even hesitate. ”No.”

”So I accepted the bucket.”

Marielle looked around the training hall with obvious dissatisfaction. ”The bucket, I can tolerate.”

She swept a hand around the hall. ”This, however, remains an unacceptable substitute.”

Daravan sighed. ”Marielle—”

”The palace square is over five times the size.”

”I know.”

”It is indoors. There is no wind.”

”I know.”

”We’re engineering an experience for several thousand people, Captain. I would like to know what the weather intends to contribute.”

Daravan regarded her for a long moment. ”Finished?”

”...Momentarily.”

”Good.”

He walked to one of the tall windows overlooking the palace square below.

Festival workers moved steadily between unfinished lantern stands. Decorations climbed poles. Carpenters assembled temporary seating.

”It isn’t the audience I’m worried about.”

He spoke quietly. ”It’s everyone watching the audience.”

The room fell still.

”If Lady Serali rehearses in the square...”

”...I show every assassin where she’ll stand.”

He pointed toward the rooftops surrounding the open space.

”I show every agitator where my guards will be.”

Another point.

”I show every hostile observer how quickly we respond.”

His hand lowered.

”I don’t rehearse security in public.”

Silence lingered.

Serali frowned.

”...Is all of that really necessary?”

Daravan met her eyes.

”Three nights ago, someone attempted to scale the garden wall beneath your chambers.”

Serali’s head came up.

”...What?”

”I had him arrested before he reached the top.”

”I never heard about that.”

”No.”

”...Why?”

”Because I did my job.”

Silence settled over the hall.

After a moment, Daravan continued.

”Yesterday morning Commander Harrek’s Watch dispersed a group distributing inflammatory broadsheets outside the palace gates before they gathered a crowd.”

Marielle looked up from her notebook. ”I hadn’t heard.”

Daravan glanced at her. ”Because the Watch did its job.”

Serali looked toward the doorway.

Pell and Orran still stood to the side, giving them privacy while remaining close enough to intervene if necessary.

Her gaze lingered on them for a moment.

”...So that’s why.”

Daravan nodded once. ”Yes.”

Another silence.

Then Serali drew a slow breath. ”...All right.”

”Thank you.”

Marielle closed her notebook. ”I understand.”

Everyone looked toward her.

”I still think Captain Daravan is wrong.”

”I am not.”

”But I understand why he’s wrong.”

Daravan sighed. ”I’m not.”

”So.” She looked around the training hall.

”We shall proceed with chalk rectangles...”

She gestured toward the bucket.

”...ceremonial buckets...”

”...and, fortunately...”

Her expression brightened and she pointed toward a large canvas tarp draped over something in the corner of the hall.

”...my artificial wind generator.”

Everyone turned.

The tarp covered a machine roughly the size of a writing desk.

Canvas ducting protruded from one end.

A hand crank emerged from the other.

Several gears were visible beneath the edge of the canvas.

Daravan frowned. ”...How long has that been there?”

”Since yesterday.”

”I’ve been in this room twice.”

”You didn’t ask.”

”I didn’t know I needed to.”

Marielle looked faintly puzzled. ”It seemed self-explanatory.”

Daravan stared at the covered machine for a long moment. ”...What does it do?”

”It is a remarkably accurate approximation of a spring breeze.”

Daravan looked genuinely alarmed. ”How?”

Marielle smiled. ”Engineering.”

”No.”

”You don’t even know what it is.”

”I know enough.”

”It has only exploded once.”

”...Marielle.”

”It was a prototype.”

”Marielle.”

”It was a very small explosion.”

”Marielle.”

She looked at Serali. ”I assume you’re willing to accept a very small explosion in the interest of scientific accuracy?”

Serali considered this for a moment. ”...Is it likely to explode again?”

Marielle answered immediately. ”No.”

Daravan looked at the covered machine. ”I have learned not to make predictions.”

Marielle frowned. ”One unfortunate prototype has permanently damaged my reputation.”

”It has informed my risk assessment.”

”They’re different things.”

”Not from where I stand.”

Serali sighed. ”I have made a terrible mistake.”

Daravan pinched the bridge of his nose. ”You’ve been here less than ten minutes.”

”I know. And already she’s inventing weather.”

Marielle looked mildly offended. ”I invented it months ago.”

Daravan looked back at the tarp. ”That is somehow less reassuring.”

Marielle made one final note in her notebook. ”Constraints acknowledged.”

She closed it. ”Now we begin collecting data.”

Serali set her mug carefully on the nearest bench. ”I assume you’ve decided where you want me.”

Marielle was already consulting three separate diagrams. ”Approximately.”

She walked into the chalk rectangles, comparing them to the measurements in her notebook before pointing toward a small mark near the center.

”There.”

Serali stepped onto it.

Marielle frowned. ”...Two inches left.”

Serali complied.

”...Half an inch forward.”

Another adjustment.

”There.”

Daravan watched the exchange for a moment. ”You’ve positioned her to the inch.”

Marielle looked genuinely surprised. ”To the quarter inch.”

She glanced back at Serali. ”Please don’t move.”

”I breathe.”

”I accounted for breathing.”

”You accounted for breathing?”

”Approximately.”

Serali looked at Daravan. ”She frightens me.”

”A reasonable response.”

Marielle continued without noticing. ”Pell.”

One of the guards looked up.

”Stand here.”

She pointed toward another chalk mark.

”Orran.”

Another mark.

”Captain.”

Daravan raised an eyebrow.

”I’ve been assigned?”

”You occupy the northern observation point.”

”I thought that was hypothetical.”

”It was.”

She looked around the room. ”It has become practical.”

Daravan sighed, but stepped where indicated.

Marielle nodded with satisfaction. ”Excellent.”

She took several steps backward, narrowed one eye, then scribbled another note.

”...No.”

She crossed out a line. ”The lantern procession needs another three feet.”

”Why?” Serali asked.

”Perspective.”

”It looks fine from here.”

Marielle looked horrified. ”It doesn’t matter what it looks like from here.”

She pointed toward the imaginary crowd filling her chalk circles. ”It matters what it looks like from there.”

Serali followed the gesture.

For a moment...

She almost saw them.

Thousands of people.

Lanterns.

The eastern flame.

Silence waiting for her.

Her stomach tightened.

Marielle looked up from her notebook. ”Ready?”

Serali drew a slow breath. ”No.”

A beat. ”...Let’s begin anyway.”

Serali lifted her hands.

Shadow gathered slowly beneath the rafters.

Not too much. Not the thick, swallowing dark she might have called in anger or fear. This needed to be thin. Structured. A woven veil rather than a wall. It unfurled above the lantern path, a canopy of translucent darkness edged in faint silver where the lantern light struck it.

The room dimmed.

Then warmed.

The flames seemed brighter under the shadow.

Marielle made a strangled sound.

Serali lowered her gaze. “If that is arousal for engineering, keep it private.”

“It is admiration.”

“It sounded unwell.”

“I am often unwell around good design.”

Silence settled over the hall.

Even Daravan looked upward.

The shadow canopy stretched from one end of the practice route to the other, turning an ordinary line of lanterns into something almost sacred.

He imagined it above the palace square.

Thousands of lanterns.

Thousands of faces.

For the first time since the council had approved the demonstration, he could almost see what Serali wanted the kingdom to understand.

Shadow did not consume the light.

It sheltered it.

”...That’s going to make an impression,” he said quietly.

Serali looked at him. ”You think so?”

”I think,” Daravan said, still watching the canopy, ”there won’t be anyone in that square who forgets it.”

Marielle was already writing. ”Excellent.”

She didn’t look up. ”We now need to determine maximum span.”

Another line. ”Minimum opacity.”

Another. ”Expansion rate.”

Another. ”Wind tolerance.”

She looked thoughtfully toward the lanterns. ”Failure point.”

Serali frowned. ”...Failure point?”

”We’ll need to know when it collapses.”

”I’d rather not.”

”So would I.”

Marielle smiled pleasantly. ”Which is precisely why we’ll make it happen here instead of during First Sun.”

She underlined the final note.

Controlled Conditions.
