The Queen's Mage

Chapter 162: Artistic Direction

By the fourth rehearsal, the shadow canopy worked.

It unfurled overhead in a smooth sheet of living darkness, the lanterns beneath it casting warm pools of gold that pressed gently against the shadow instead of being swallowed by it. The contrast transformed both. The lanterns seemed brighter. The darkness seemed softer.

Marielle watched from one chalk mark.

Then another.

Then a third.

Another note disappeared into her notebook.

She nodded once. ”Excellent.”

Serali let the canopy settle for another few moments before allowing it to dissolve, ribbons of shadow curling upward into nothing.

She looked toward Marielle. ”Well?”

Marielle consulted her notes. ”The dimensions are correct.”

She checked another page. ”The lantern spacing is correct.”

Another. ”The viewing angles are correct.”

She closed the notebook with a quiet snap. ”I believe we’ve solved it.”

Serali smiled, relieved. ”So we’re done?”

Marielle looked toward the large tarp in the corner. ”Almost.”

Serali followed her gaze. ”The wind.”

Marielle’s smile broadened. ”Thus far, we’ve proven the canopy is beautiful.”

She gestured toward the lanterns. ”We have yet to prove it’s useful.”

Serali folded her arms. ”It is useful.”

”It almost certainly is.”

”That doesn’t sound very confident.”

”It sounds appropriately scientific.”

She walked toward the covered machine. ”We’re about to discover whether your shadow canopy will continue protecting the lanterns during a spring breeze.”

Serali glanced toward Pell. ”...Should I be worried?”

Pell considered the question. ”I’ve been advised not to answer that until I know which invention we’re discussing.”

Marielle stopped beside the tarp. ”This one.”

Pell looked at it. ”...Should one of us fetch the Captain?”

Orran didn’t even look up. ”He knows.”

”Nobody’s told him.”

”He doesn’t need telling.”

A beat.

”He knows Lady Marielle.”

Pell considered that. ”...That’s true.”

Serali looked between the two guards. ”That is somehow less reassuring.”

Marielle, entirely unconcerned, grasped one edge of the tarp.

With one practiced pull—

The canvas slid to the floor.

Beneath it stood a bewildering arrangement of polished wooden vanes, brass gears, leather bellows, canvas ducting, and an alarming number of cranks whose purposes were not immediately apparent.

Marielle gave one of the cranks an experimental turn.

The machine answered with a low wooden clatter.

”Hm.”

Another adjustment.

”That sounds healthier.”

Serali eyed it suspiciously. ”Healthier than what?”

”The previous noise.”

”I don’t know what the previous noise was.”

”Exactly.” Marielle sounded pleased.

She tightened a leather strap, peered into the gears, then nodded decisively. ”I believe we’re ready.”

She looked toward Serali. ”If you’ll recreate the canopy, we can begin introducing controlled airflow in graduated increments.”

Serali blinked. ”You make wind sound scholarly.”

”It deserves better public relations.”

Marielle reached for the crank.

Rapid footsteps echoed down the corridor outside.

Pell looked toward the door. ”Someone’s coming.”

Before he could reach it—

The doors swung open.

Everly hurried into the training hall, cheeks pink from running, a little out of breath and looking thoroughly pleased with herself.

She spotted Serali immediately. ”I found you!”

Serali smiled despite herself. ”You certainly did.”

Everly’s gaze swept around the room.

The chalk rectangles.

The ropes.

The bucket.

The enormous uncovered machine in the corner.

Then she looked back at Serali.

”Are you practicing for the oath show?”

Marielle blinked. ”...The oath show?”

”The shadow one.”

Everly spread her arms dramatically.

”The one everybody keeps talking about.”

Serali exchanged an amused glance with Marielle. ”I suppose we are.”

”I wanted to see.”

She had already wandered several steps into the hall before another set of footsteps approached; less enthusiastic, considerably more measured.

A polite knock followed.

Pell opened the door.

Lessa stood outside, one hand resting lightly against the frame as she caught her breath. ”I do apologize.”

She looked directly at Everly. ”Her Highness discovered where Lady Serali was approximately three corridors before I did.”

”I was searching,” Everly said.

”You were sprinting.”

”I was searching quickly.”

Lessa closed her eyes for the briefest moment. ”So I gathered.”

Everly smiled, entirely unapologetic.

Lessa looked toward Serali.

”I’m terribly sorry. I can remove her if she’s interrupting.”

Before Serali could answer—

”No.” Marielle looked up from the wind generator.

Lessa blinked.

”She should stay.”

”Lady Marielle?”

”I’ve been trying to predict how several thousand people will react to this demonstration.”

She looked thoughtfully at Everly. ”I’ve just realized I have access to my most important demographic.”

Everly frowned. ”...What’s a demographic?”

Marielle considered. ”The child audience.”

”Oh.” Everly nodded solemnly. ”I can do that.”

Serali laughed. ”I have every confidence.”

Lessa looked between the engineer, the Royal Mage, and the princess.

Then she smiled. ”...Very well.”

She quietly took up a place near Pell and Orran, where she could keep an eye on Everly without getting in the way.

Marielle smiled faintly. ”Now.”

She looked at Everly. ”Tell me what you see.”

Serali stepped back onto her mark.

She drew a slow breath.

Shadow answered.

Darkness rose from the floor in long, fluid ribbons, gathering overhead into a broad canopy that stretched across the training hall. Beneath it, the practice lanterns glowed warm and golden, their light pressing gently against the living shadow without piercing it.

Marielle watched from one of her chalk marks.

Notebook ready.

Pell and Orran looked upward despite themselves.

Lessa smiled quietly.

The canopy settled overhead.

Warm lantern light glowed beneath it, the living shadow sheltering rather than swallowing the flame.

Marielle looked expectantly toward Everly.

Everly stared upward.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then—

”Is that all?”

Marielle froze.

Serali’s mouth twitched. ”Out of the mouths of almost-five-year-olds.”

Marielle looked faintly wounded. ”It is a complex manipulation of airflow, visual contrast, and public sentiment.”

Everly frowned. ”But it just sits there.”

”It protects the lanterns,” Serali said.

”That is good,” Everly agreed with the gentle patience of a child correcting an adult who had overlooked something obvious.

”But Serali can do birds.”

Serali went still.

Marielle’s expression changed. ”Oh.”

”No,” Serali said.

Marielle looked at her. ”Shadow birds?”

”I know that look.”

”What look?”

”The one where you’ve already started redesigning the demonstration.”

”I’ve started considering redesigning it.”

”You’ve redesigned it.”

”...Mostly.”

Everly looked between them. ”They come out of the roof.”

”The canopy,” Marielle corrected automatically.

”The nice-night roof.”

Marielle considered that. ”...Acceptable.”

She crouched until she was level with Everly. ”Can you show me?”

Everly’s eyes lit up. ”Yes!”

She hurried beneath the canopy.

She pointed both hands upward. ”They’re sleeping.”

Then she flapped her arms enthusiastically. ”Then they wake up!”

She darted out, circling happily around the chalk rectangles.

”They fly all around everybody—”

She swooped past Serali.

Past Marielle.

Past Pell, who stepped aside with practiced dignity.

Then she reached the bucket.

She stopped beside it.

Pointed at it. ”This is the big fire.”

”It is,” Marielle agreed with complete seriousness.

Everly nodded. ”Then Mama lights it—”

She mimed striking a flame.

”And then...”

She spread her arms wide again.

If you find this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the infringement.

”The birds go around the sun.”

She ran behind the bucket.

”They’re saying good morning!”

She emerged on the other side with an enormous grin.

”Because the sun came back.”

Silence.

Marielle had stopped blinking.

Everly looked around. ”...What?”

Marielle stood very slowly.

Walked to the chalk wall.

Picked up a piece of chalk.

”...Again.”

Everly smiled. ”I can do it slower.”

”Please.”

This time Marielle watched only Everly.

Not the bucket.

Not the chalk rectangles.

Not the canopy.

Everly.

The child emerged from beneath the shadow.

Circled the lantern procession.

Curved around the bucket.

Then disappeared briefly behind it before popping out the other side with another delighted flap of her arms.

Chalk scratched furiously.

Curves.

Timing marks.

Tiny birds.

A broad arc around the Eastern Flame Stand.

Marielle whispered to herself. ”Of course.”

Everly raised her hand.

Serali stared at her. “Why are you raising your hand?”

“For asking.”

“This is not a classroom.”

“Lessa says raising hands is polite.”

Lessa looked as if she very much wished not to be drawn into this.

Serali sighed. “Yes, Everly?”

“Can I be director?”

“No.”

Marielle said, “Actually—”

“No.”

“Directorial perspective from the child audience would be valuable.”

“She is not the child audience. She is a princess with a known bias toward birds.”

Everly lifted her chin. “I can be fair.”

Marielle leaned in, eyes bright. “A director could tell us whether the emotional sequence reads clearly.”

Serali stared at her. “She is four.”

“Almost five later,” both Everly and Marielle said.

Serali pointed at Marielle. “You are too old to use that defense.”

Marielle looked unabashed.

Serali looked toward Lessa. ”...You’re allowing this?”

Lessa smiled. ”I believe resisting would consume more time than permitting it.”

Serali sighed. ”I’ve been overruled.”

”You have,” Marielle said brightly.

Everly climbed onto the low bench beside the chalkboard.

”As Director...”

Serali closed her eyes. ”Gods preserve me.”

”...there should be lots of birds.”

Marielle nodded thoughtfully. ”Define ’lots.’”

Everly considered with immense seriousness. ”...Twenty.”

Serali looked horrified. ”No.”

”Twelve?”

”No.”

”Ten?”

”Still no.”

Marielle looked toward Serali. ”Counterproposal?”

”Five.”

Everly looked appalled. ”Five isn’t lots.”

”It is if they’re magical.”

Marielle considered the imaginary sky. ”Seven.”

Serali looked at her. ”Why seven?”

”Odd numbers compose more naturally.”

”You invented that.”

”I strongly suspect I discovered it.”

Everly nodded immediately. ”Seven is lots.”

Pell glanced upward. ”It sounds balanced.”

Orran nodded. ”I was thinking that.”

Serali looked at both guards. ”You two are contributing now?”

”We were asked.”

”You weren’t.”

Marielle looked around the room. ”All in favour of seven?”

Every hand except Serali’s went up.

Serali looked at Lessa. ”You too?”

Lessa smiled apologetically. ”I confess...seven feels right.”

Serali sighed. ”I have somehow lost a vote regarding my own spell.”

”Seven,” Marielle declared, writing it down.

She tapped the notebook. ”Now. What do the birds do?”

”They come out of the nice night,” Everly said immediately.

”They fly around everybody. They go behind the big fire.”

She demonstrated the broad curve with both hands.

”They say good morning.”

Marielle sketched furiously. ”They greet the dawn...”

”They leave the canopy intact...”

”They draw every eye to the Eastern Flame...”

Serali watched the page fill. ”...You’re really doing this.”

”Of course.”

Serali hesitated. ”I only...”

She searched for the words. ”I don’t want it to become...”

Marielle looked up. ”...A performance?”

Serali nodded. ”I don’t want people watching me because I can make birds. I want them watching because shadow protected the light.”

Everly frowned. ”But the birds are helping.”

”They’re decoration.”

”No.” Everly shook her head firmly. ”They’re saying thank you.”

The room quieted.

Lessa, from the entrance, murmured, “That is rather lovely, Your Highness.”

Everly looked pleased.

Serali looked at the far wall.

Unfortunately, she could see it.

Lanterns moving through the square, small flames cupped beneath a canopy of shadow. Allandra’s sunfire catching the eastern brazier. Serali’s shadows gathering at the edges of the lantern light, shaping themselves into birds, not ravens, not carrion things, not the black-winged emblems people feared, but swifts, sparrows, little impossible shapes cut from night. Rising not to obscure the flame, but to meet it.

The city seeing shadow move upward with the light.

Gods damn it, it was good.

Marielle was looking at her now.

So was Everly.

”...All right.” She exhaled. ”One rehearsal.”

Marielle smiled. ”I’ll take one rehearsal.”

Serali lifted her hands.

Seven thin ribbons of shadow separated from the canopy.

One by one they folded into small bird-shaped silhouettes.

They circled once.

Then settled into a neat, identical orbit beneath the canopy.

Marielle smiled. ”They’re perfect.”

Chapter 163: Birds of a Feather

Everly wandered beneath the shadow birds. ”They need names.”

Serali laughed once. ”They are seven identical manifestations of structured shadow.”

”They still need names.”

Marielle thoughtfully opened to a clean page. ”I admit...this will simplify rehearsal.”

Serali stared. ”...How?”

”If I need to refer to one bird...” She shrugged. ”A name is more efficient than ’third bird from the left.’”

Everly pointed to the first bird. ”That’s Button Two.”

Serali blinked. ”...Button Two?”

”Button One is the spider.”

Lessa smiled. ”Naturally.”

Marielle wrote it down without hesitation. Button 2

Everly pointed to the next bird. ”That’s Pip.”

”Why Pip?” Serali asked.

”He looks like a Pip.”

”...I don’t know what that means.”

”I do.”

Marielle nodded thoughtfully. ”I believe that’s sufficient.”

Another note. Pip

”And that’s Biscuit.”

”Does Biscuit have a reason?”

”He likes snacks.”

”They are manifestations of shadow.”

”He would like snacks.”

Marielle wrote: Biscuit

Serali sighed. ”I’m beginning to understand why Captain Daravan always sounds tired.”

Everly pointed confidently to another. ”That’s Verya.”

Serali looked up. ”...Verya?”

”She’s the serious one. She keeps everybody together.”

Marielle smiled. ”A leadership role.”

Serali looked at her. ”No leadership roles.”

Marielle quietly amended the note. Verya - organized

Everly continued. ”That’s Feather.”

”Why Feather?”

”She’s the prettiest.”

Serali looked up. ”They all look exactly alike.”

Everly frowned sympathetically. ”They won’t.”

Marielle’s pencil paused. ”...Interesting.”

”The next one’s Pebble.”

Serali didn’t even ask.

Everly volunteered the explanation anyway. ”He likes staying close.”

Marielle wrote: Pebble - stays near flock

”They’re all staying close.”

”They won’t.”

Finally Everly pointed to the last bird. ”And that’s Danger.”

Serali followed her finger.

”...Why is that one Danger?”

”Because he’s little.”

Serali frowned. ”They’re all the same size.”

”They won’t be.” Everly smiled. ”Little things do the biggest tricks.”

Marielle looked delighted. ”...Aerial manoeuvres.”

”No aerial manoeuvres,” Serali said immediately.

Everly nodded, ”Just little ones.”

Serali looked up at the flock circling beneath the rafters. ”They are not keeping those names.”

Everly folded her arms. ”They already have them.”

”They have temporary labels.”

”They’re names.”

”They are organizational aids.”

Marielle nodded. ”That’s what names are.”

Serali gave her a look.

Marielle looked entirely unrepentant.

With a small sigh, Serali lifted one hand.

The birds dissolved first.

Each one unraveled into thin ribbons of shadow that flowed gently upward, disappearing back into the canopy.

A heartbeat later, the canopy itself melted into the afternoon light until only the practice lanterns remained.

The hall brightened.

Marielle closed her notebook with a satisfied nod. ”Excellent.”

She looked toward the wind machine. ”Now we determine whether the birds survive weather.”

Everly brightened. ”I want to help.”

Lessa rested a gentle hand on her shoulder. ”You may.”

Everly smiled. ”Oh good.”

”From over there.” Lesssa pointed toward the opposite side of the hall.

Everly’s smile faded. ”But I won’t see as well.”

”The wind machine has moving gears.”

Marielle glanced over. ”It also has moving wind.”

Lessa gave her a look. ”The gears concern me more.”

Pell nodded. ”I’ve been told the Captain prefers children remain outside the radius of experimental engineering.”

Orran studied the machine. ”I prefer everyone remain outside the radius of experimental engineering.”

Marielle looked mildly offended. ”It is no longer experimental.”

No one answered.

She amended, ”...It is substantially less experimental.”

Everly sighed with tremendous dignity. ”I still have to stand back?”

”Yes.”

She considered arguing.

Then looked at Lessa.

Then at Pell.

Then at Orran, who nodded once with the quiet certainty of someone who had survived a number of Marielle’s inventions.

Everly sighed again. ”...Good safety.”

Lessa smiled. ”Very good safety.”

Everly trudged toward the chalk mark Lessa indicated with the solemn dignity of someone making a great personal sacrifice.

Halfway there she turned.

”I can still be Director.”

Marielle nodded immediately.

”Certainly.”

”You’ll simply be directing from a safer distance.”

Everly considered this. ”...Director’s balcony.”

”I think that’s an excellent title.”

Serali laughed. ”I cannot believe you promoted the safer side of the room.”

Marielle looked toward Orran. ”If you would?”

Orran stepped beside the wind machine with the resigned expression of a man who had already accepted this as part of his duties.

Marielle pointed to the largest crank. ”Steady pace.”

He nodded. ”How steady?”

She considered. ”Spring breeze.”

”...That answers remarkably little.”

”It answers everything.”

Pell clapped Orran gently on the shoulder. ”I’ll notify the Captain if you’re blown into another county.”

”I appreciate that.”

Serali stepped back onto her chalk mark.

She drew a slow breath.

Shadow answered.

The canopy blossomed overhead once more, broad and gentle above the imagined lantern procession.

A heartbeat later—

Seven birds emerged from its edge.

They circled once beneath the canopy.

Button Two.

Pip.

Biscuit.

Verya.

Feather.

Pebble.

Danger.

Serali refused to think of them by name.

She was almost certain that would make the situation worse.

Marielle watched the formation. ”Begin.”

Orran turned the crank.

The machine answered with a rhythmic clatter.

Leather bellows expanded.

Canvas ducts shivered.

A cool breeze rolled across the hall.

It caught Serali’s hair immediately, tugging loose strands across her face.

Marielle’s notes fluttered.

Lessa reached to steady Everly’s sleeve.

The practice banners hanging from the rafters stirred gently.

Beneath the canopy...

The lantern flames did not move.

Warm pools of gold remained perfectly still beneath the woven shadow.

The canopy itself rippled softly, absorbing the breeze without breaking.

Marielle’s smile appeared almost involuntarily. ”Excellent.”

She made another note. ”Increase slightly.”

Orran turned the crank another quarter turn.

The breeze strengthened. The canvas ducts groaned. Pell’s cloak shifted against his shoulders.

The loose chalk dust skittered across the stone floor.

Still— The lanterns beneath the canopy burned as steadily as before. Not one flame flickered.

The shadow flexed overhead like fabric catching the wind...

...and settled again.

Marielle looked openly delighted. ”The pressure differential is exactly where it should be.”

Serali glanced upward. ”I have no idea what that means.”

”It means,” Marielle said, unable to stop smiling, ”it’s working.”

Marielle made one final note. ”Canopy stable under wind.”

Then her attention shifted upward. ”Now. Birds.”

Serali sighed, but sent the flock into motion.

The birds banked together, and then Button Two drifted wide.

Pip followed immediately.

Biscuit became fascinated by one of the practice lanterns and executed an entirely unnecessary loop around it.

Marielle’s pencil paused. ”Interesting.”

Verya peeled neatly out of formation.

She intercepted Button Two.

Shepherded Pip back toward the others.

Then returned to the center of the flock as though nothing unusual had happened.

Silence settled across the hall.

Everly folded her arms. ”I told you.”

Serali stared upward. ”That is coincidence.”

One bird chose that exact moment to fold his wings and dive dramatically toward the floor before pulling out at the last instant with unmistakable enthusiasm.

Pell looked up. ”That one worries me.”

Serali opened her mouth to object. Then stopped.

She had known exactly which bird Pell meant. Her eyes found him immediately.

The smallest one.

She frowned.

He...

...hadn’t been the smallest.

Had he?

Danger completed another exuberant loop before rejoining the flock.

Everly grinned from her Director’s Balcony. ”I like him.”

Marielle slowly lowered her notebook. ”Lady Serali.”

”No.”

”I haven’t asked anything.”

”I know.”

Button Two became distracted again.

Pebble remained tucked comfortably near the canopy.

Feather glided through the air with effortless grace.

Biscuit wandered back toward the lanterns.

Verya sighed—

Or somehow gave the overwhelming impression of sighing—

before collecting the entire flock once more.

Marielle quietly began writing.

Button Two — distractible.

Pip — follows others.

Biscuit — easily diverted.

Verya — maintains formation.

Feather — graceful.

Pebble — remains close.

Danger — acrobatic.

Serali pointed accusingly at the notebook. ”Do not make this official.”

”I’m recording observations.”

”They are not observations.”

”They are remarkably consistent observations.”

Serali looked back toward the flock. ”My subconscious...”

Danger attempted another unnecessary dive.

”...has become insubordinate.”

Everly beamed from across the hall. ”I think they listened.”

Serali watched Button Two drift lazily away from the flock before Verya gently nudged him home again.

After a long moment, despite herself...

She smiled.

Very slightly.

Marielle saw it.

She didn’t write that one down.

Some observations didn’t belong in engineering notes. She simply nodded once. ”Excellent. What happens when the birds finish?”

Serali blinked. ”They disappear.”

Marielle frowned. ”They simply...”

She gestured vaguely. ”...cease?”

Everly considered it for a moment. ”They have to come home.”

Serali looked at her. ”...Come home?”

Everly pointed up at the canopy. ”That’s where they live.”

Marielle smiled. ”I like that. The flock circles once...”

”They come back...”

She frowned thoughtfully. ”How do we show the audience they’re yours?”

Serali looked up. ”Do we need to?”

”I think so.”

”They’re your magic.”

”They’re obviously my magic.”

”They’re shadow.”

”They’re birds.”

”They’re shadow birds.”

”They’re friendly shadow birds,” Everly corrected.

Serali sighed. ”I am not arguing taxonomy.”

Marielle tilted her head. ”What if one briefly landed on your wrist?”

”No.”

Everly gasped. ”Yes.”

”No.”

”But then everyone would know it likes you.”

”I do not require bird endorsement.”

”You do.”

Serali looked at Marielle. ”Do not write ’bird endorsement.’”

Marielle’s pencil froze.

Serali closed her eyes. ”You were writing it.”

”...As shorthand.”

”It becomes policy whenever you say ’shorthand.’”

Marielle looked unrepentant. “If one small shadow bird lands on your wrist before the oath, it visually establishes control, gentleness, and lack of threat.”

“It establishes that I am performing tricks.”

“No,” Everly said.

Serali looked at her.

Everly’s face had gone serious.

“Not tricks,” she said. “It shows they know you.”

That landed differently.

Serali looked down at the pale cuff covering the scars on her wrist. ”My magic isn’t a pet.”

Everly nodded. ”No.”

A thoughtful pause. ”But it listens.”

Marielle didn’t write.

She simply watched Serali.

After a long silence, Serali said, ”...It does.”

Marielle tapped the final note. ”So. Which one?”

Serali looked up at the flock.

Button Two wandered lazily after Biscuit.

Verya quietly corrected both of them.

Danger attempted another entirely unnecessary roll.

Feather glided effortlessly beside the canopy.

Pebble refused to stray far.

Pip seemed content simply following whoever happened to be nearest.

Seven little pieces of shadow.

Seven little pieces of impossible.

”I don’t know,” Serali admitted.

Marielle looked surprised. ”You don’t?”

”They’re my magic.”

A small smile touched Serali’s mouth.

”...Not my puppets.”

The room fell quiet.

Everly looked up at the birds. ”They’ll know.”

Serali followed her gaze.

One bird.

Just one.

Leaving the flock.

Settling, for the briefest heartbeat, on her wrist before returning home.

She could picture it perfectly.

She simply couldn’t picture which one it would be.

For reasons she couldn’t quite explain...

...that felt exactly right.

When the final trial ended, the hall was dusky with dissipating shadow and warm with lanternlight. Serali’s arms ached. Her head hurt slightly behind one eye. The shadows had begun to feel heavy in the way magic did when the body wanted food and pride wanted to pretend otherwise.

Everly noticed first.

“Done,” she declared.

Marielle looked up from her notes. “One more—”

“Director says done.”

Marielle opened her mouth.

Everly gave her Allandra’s stare.

Marielle closed her mouth.

Serali turned to the child. “Thank you.”

Everly nodded. “Your magic is tired.”

“Yes.”

“And Marielle is too excited.”

“Also yes.”

Marielle looked offended. “I am appropriately excited.”

“No,” Serali and Everly said together.

Lessa hid a smile.

Pell and Orran failed to hide theirs.

Marielle gathered her sketches with wounded dignity. “Fine. We stop. For the health of the mage and the discipline of the engineer.”

“A historic compromise,” Serali said.

Everly came to the chalk line and stood there, looking up at Serali.

“The nice night roof and birds will help,” she said.

Serali’s chest tightened. “Will they?”

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

Everly looked towards the lanterns, “Before, shadows were for hiding when bad things happen in stories. But yours are for keeping lights awake.”

The hall blurred slightly.

Serali looked away.

Marielle became very busy stacking papers in absolute silence.

Lessa’s face softened.

Even the guards looked elsewhere.

Everly stepped closer to the chalk line but did not cross it.

“People should know,” she said.

Serali looked back at her.

The princess stood there in her yellow dress and wool shawl, eyes solemn, hands folded in front of her like a tiny director addressing a difficult cast.

Serali swallowed.

“All right,” she said.

Everly smiled.

Then, because she was four and depth could not be sustained indefinitely, she added, “Also the birds are very good.”

Serali laughed.

It came out softer than expected.

“Yes,” she said. “The birds are very good.”

Marielle looked up, bright again. “So we keep them?”

Serali sighed.

Everly lifted her chin.

The two of them stared at her with matching, terrible hope.

Serali pinched the bridge of her nose.

“We keep the birds,” she said.

Marielle punched both fists into the air.

Everly cheered.

Orran clapped once, panicked, and stopped.

Serali looked at him.

He froze.

She narrowed her eyes.

Then said, “Correct response.”

He exhaled.

Marielle was already back at the table, scribbling new notes. “Excellent. Revised sequence: lantern path, shadow canopy, wind-break, dawn cue, seven birds rising, eastern flame, oath—”

“No,” Serali said.

Marielle stopped. “No?”

Serali looked at the lanterns.

The chalk path.

The place where the birds had woken.

“The oath comes before the birds.”

Marielle blinked.

Everly tilted her head. “Why?”

Serali touched her cuff.

“Because the birds are not proof,” she said. “They are answer.”

Marielle’s expression shifted.

Understanding arriving like sunrise on glass.

“Yes,” she said quietly. “That is better.”

Everly frowned. “I don’t understand.”

Serali crouched so they were closer to eye level.

Everly immediately straightened, pleased by the seriousness.

“First I say who I am,” Serali said. “Then the magic shows them I meant it.”

Everly thought about this.

Then nodded. “Good directing.”

Serali almost smiled.

“Thank you.”

Everly leaned closer and whispered, “Danger should fly first.”

“No.”

“Last?”

“Maybe.”

Everly beamed.

Marielle wrote: Danger possibly last.

Serali saw it.

“Marielle.”

“It says possibly.”

Serali looked at the lanterns again and thought of the city waiting beyond the palace walls. The broadsheets. The songs. The whispered word princess, sweet as poison. The people who would watch her at First Sun and decide whether she was shadow, hostage, threat, daughter, oathbreaker, omen.

She could not control what they would choose to see.

But she could choose what she made.

A canopy for lanterns.

Seven birds waking into dawn.

An oath before magic.

Choice before spectacle.

She stood.

Her magic rested under her skin, tired but steady.

Everly had gone back to the table and was now explaining to Marielle that Button 2 should be rounder. Marielle was listening with full seriousness, sketching a sequence of increasingly round birds.

Serali watched them.

“Not too round,” she said.

Everly looked over. “Director knows.”

Marielle nodded. “Director knows.”

Serali groaned.

But when the little girl laughed, and the engineer bent over the page, and the lanterns glowed beneath the memory of shadow, Serali found she did not actually mind.
