The Devil Does Not Need to Be Defeated

Chapter 431: The Most Unfortunate Person

Edel felt that today, he was both unfortunate and fortunate.

Unfortunate because, after today’s events, he clearly realized that the goddess of his dreams would belong to someone else, someone he couldn’t compete with, and didn’t even dare to compete with. He had finally accepted this cruel reality and no longer dared to fantasize about Lucy.

Among the nobles competing in the royal capital, there were many who were more outstanding and of higher birth than him. He, a Duke’s son who only dared to act arrogantly in his own territory, had no advantages here and didn’t even dare to provoke a mere viscount.

That wasn’t the worst part.

Regarding Lucy, Edel had long accepted the harsh reality and knew that he could never obtain the Kingdom’s treasure. He had already shifted his target and only wanted to fulfill the arranged marriage and marry the other princess.

However, even in this matter, he hadn’t made any progress. This was the true misfortune.

Walking on the streets of the capital, recalling how he had just gone to Lia’s residence to request an audience, only to be turned away, and even his attempt to seek an audience with the king failed, forcing him to leave dejectedly, Edel’s heart was filled with anger and resentment.

“Those royal bastards, they must be looking down on me, not planning to fulfill the engagement at all, right?”

Edel could see through this.

This was precisely why he was so angry.

“I’m also a Duke’s son, and I also have the Hero’s blood flowing through my veins. What right do they have to look down on me?”

Edel vented his frustration, bumping into passersby along the way, attracting countless angry glares.

But seeing the two knights guarding Edel, the passersby knew he was a noble and could only suppress their anger, cursing him inwardly before leaving the scene.

Edel continued to vent his anger like this, occasionally cursing, making the two knights beside him feel disdainful.

“He still dares to call himself a descendant of the Hero.”

“With his behavior, even if he had the true Hero’s blood, it would be tarnished by him, let alone a Duke’s son whose bloodline has been diluted for generations, with barely any Hero’s blood left.”

The two knights also looked down on Edel.

Edel was truly incompetent, only knowing how to bully others. He was a complete wastrel, his level less than twenty. If it weren’t for the fact that he was the only remaining heir of the Lucica family, he would have been abandoned long ago. How could he still be swaggering around here?

Both knights had served the Lucica family for a long time, so they knew very well that originally, it wasn’t this incompetent wastrel who was engaged to the royal princess.

Edel’s two older brothers were both very outstanding individuals, especially the eldest, whose talent was no less than that of Limgir from the Stalim family. At a young age, he was considered a pillar of the family and received their focused attention.

It was precisely because he couldn’t compare to his outstanding older brother that Edel, driven by jealousy, became an incompetent wastrel. Initially, the Lucica family intended to betroth their eldest son to the royal princess, or at least their second son.

Who would have thought that an accident would take the lives of both the eldest and second sons of the Lucica family, and the engagement between the royal family and the Lucica family would fall to Edel, letting him benefit greatly?

If it weren’t for this, how could the Lucica family present such an incompetent wastrel?

It was truly a desperate move.

But Edel was completely unaware of this and thought that this was fate, that he was the one destined to become the royal son-in-law, that he was the one destined to marry the beautiful princess, and that his two older brothers simply weren’t fortunate enough. He had always been smug about this.

Until he came to the royal capital and was repeatedly treated coldly by Lia, turned away by the royal family, Edel became like this, his heart filled with resentment. ℞ΑɴO͍βÈs̩

“Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!”

Enraged, Edel finally lost his temper and kicked over a shop sign by the roadside, startling the surrounding people, who fled in all directions.

At this moment, what Edel considered a stroke of luck happened.

After the surrounding people scattered, Edel saw two girls who seemed to be discussing something serious and hadn’t noticed the commotion.

Seeing the two girls, the resentment in Edel’s heart suddenly dissipated, and his angry eyes lit up.

The reason was simple: these two girls were exceptionally beautiful.

They were a beastman girl and an elf girl.

The beastman girl seemed to be a dog-person, with a pair of cute dog ears and a fluffy tail. She wasn’t wearing the animal hide clothing favored by beastmen, but light armor preferred by adventurers. She looked delicate and timid, like a trembling little animal, stimulating a man’s protective instincts.

Even Edel, a seasoned womanizer, was captivated by such a cute beastman girl. She was much more adorable and beautiful than most girls he had seen, and would definitely be a target he would pursue.

But beside this cute beastman girl was an even more beautiful existence.

She had a pure appearance, fair skin, a slender figure, and wore a robe, exuding a natural holiness, but she seemed to be troubled by something, her face melancholic, instantly hitting Edel’s strike zone.

Ever since he saw Lucy, Edel’s preferences had become somewhat strange. Apart from exceptionally beautiful women, other women were just ordinary in his eyes, no longer appealing to him. Only those who resembled Lucy could stimulate his desires.

But after seeing this elf girl, Edel discovered that his pure preference for beauty seemed to have returned.

This was a woman no less beautiful than Liadella, perhaps even more so.

Moreover, she was an elf, a race known for its beauty and purity. How much this would stimulate a man’s desires was easy to imagine.

For the beings of the human world, elves were an unattainable existence, their beauty and purity second only to the goddesses of the Divine Race.

Therefore, countless people were infatuated with elves, and the higher their status, the more passionate they were about elven girls.

Unfortunately, not only were elves few in number, but they were also naturally aloof, with an unusual obsession with cleanliness, never allowing others to touch them easily. Elven royalty might even find it dirty to talk to people from other races. Unless they gained their approval, even Heroes wouldn’t be given any special treatment.

Moreover, since elves lived in secluded forests, ordinary people couldn’t contact them, let alone see them. In this world, those who could form a relationship with an elven woman were very few.

Edel had never seen an elf in his own territory.

Because of the Lucica family’s reputation, the Lucica territory, which constantly received “tribute” from the neighboring small country, wasn’t highly regarded among the Kingdom’s territories. Although not chaotic, it was filled with corrupt nobles and those who abused their power, so even adventurers didn’t want to develop there, let alone elves.

Young elves sometimes left the forest to experience the outside world, but they would only go to territories with good reputations, or to the bases of elves who were already active in the outside world.

After all, no one knew better than elves how much outsiders coveted them, how greedy and evil they were towards them.

Thanks to this, although Edel had heard of the Elven Race, and like normal men, had yearned for and desired them, he never had the chance to lay his hands on one.

Until today, Edel discovered that the Goddess of Fate had finally smiled upon him.

“Eichi, Reid, do you see that?”

Edel pointed excitedly and said to the two knights beside him.

“An elf! A real elf!”

Hearing Edel’s excited voice, the two knights, Eichi and Reid, felt even more disdainful, but they couldn’t help but feel a flicker of amazement and desire in their eyes upon seeing the elf girl.

“There really is an elf.”

“As expected of the royal capital.”

Eichi and Reid exclaimed in admiration.

This undoubtedly made Edel even more excited.

“Judging from her appearance, she seems to be an adventurer, right?” Edel stared at Melika and asked hurriedly, “Do you know her?”

Eichi and Reid shook their heads decisively.

In this world, there were indeed some elves who worked as adventurers, traveling in human countries and even becoming famous, but as far as Eichi and Reid knew, this elf girl didn’t match any of the known powerful elves.

In other words, she was likely an elf who had just arrived in the human world.

Thinking of this, Eichi and Reid couldn’t help but look at Edel enviously.

Because they knew that Edel had definitely set his sights on her.

And an elf girl who had just arrived in the human world should be relatively easy to take advantage of, right?

“It seems I’m quite lucky.”

Edel grinned, the desire in his heart hard to suppress.

It had been a long time since he felt this excited, this aroused.

Therefore…

“I’m taking that elf.”

Having made up his mind, Edel walked towards Melika without hesitation.

Eichi and Reid frowned, but could only helplessly follow.

Edel was right.

Today, he was fortunate.

But at the same time, he was also the most unfortunate.
