Subject Zero: Faceless

The letter-writer’s stall sat at the market’s quieter edge, past the fruit sellers and the secondhand tools, marked by nothing grander than a hand-lettered board reading LETTERS READ & WRITTEN — HONEST RATES. A tin cup of pencils sat at one corner, worn to stubs and resharpened past the point most people would have discarded them; a stack of paper weighted down against the wind with a smooth river stone; a low stool angled across from the writer’s own, empty more often than not. He’d passed it three visits running without stopping.

It was the fourth visit that she stopped him instead.

”You’re the one who doesn’t talk,” she said, looking up from a half-finished letter with a level, patient attention worn easy from thirty years of reading faces for what their words weren’t saying. She was older than the vendor selling dried fruit, younger than the men playing their endless board game, gray threading dark hair pulled back plain and practical. ”I’ve watched you walk past this stall three times now like it might bite. It doesn’t. Neither do I.”

I don’t need a letter written.

”Everyone thinks that, right up until they need one.” She set down her pen. ”I’m Nell. I’ve run this corner of the square longer than most of the buildings around it have stood, and I like to know who’s walking past my stall regularly enough that I’ve started expecting it. That’s not an imposition. It’s just a fact about how a small town works, whether the person walking past wants to be a fact in it or not.”

He weighed the shape of her attention. Ordinary curiosity, aimed at him the way it would be aimed at anyone new enough to notice.

Ashfall-Zero.

”That’s a mouthful for a market stall,” she said, without missing a beat. ”But it’s yours to give, so I’ll take it as given.” She went back to her letter, unbothered, as if the exchange had settled something rather than left it hanging.

He found himself back at her stall on the next liberty afternoon, not entirely sure when the detour had stopped being incidental.

She was between customers, mending a torn page with a strip of tape older than the letter it was patching, and she waved him toward the low stool across from her without looking up. ”Sit if you’re staying. I don’t charge admission for company, only for the actual writing.”

He sat. It was, he noted, the first stool anyone in this town had offered him rather than simply left available.

”You know,” she said, taping the last corner into place, ”in thirty years running this stall, I’ve written letters for soldiers, deserters, two separate men convinced their wives had turned into spies, and one woman who wanted a letter written to a dog she was fairly sure could read. You’d think that would leave me hard to surprise. And then a masked man who writes on a slate instead of talking finally sits down across from me and doesn’t ask me a single question about myself, and I realize I don’t actually know what surprised looks like on me anymore, because apparently it just looks like curiosity.”

I didn’t want to be one more person asking you something.

”That’s considerate, and also slightly insulting,” she said, though her tone stayed warm. ”I like being asked things. It’s the whole trade. Go on — ask me something, or I’ll start charging you the company rate after all.”

He considered the offer with more care than it probably needed.

Why letters. Not a trade that needs you specifically — anyone with steady hands could write what someone dictates.

”Anyone with steady hands could write the words,” she agreed. ”Not everyone can tell when the words somebody’s dictating aren’t actually the words they mean. I’ve had men dictate a furious letter to a brother who’d wronged them and stop me halfway through to say, quietly, take that part out, he doesn’t need to carry that too. I’ve had women dictate something formal and careful and then, right at the end, add one true, unguarded line they’d clearly been building up the courage for the whole time. My job isn’t holding the pen. It’s knowing which parts are the letter and which parts are just a person needing somewhere safe to say a thing out loud before they decide whether it should be sent.” She looked at him directly. ”You write on a slate instead of speaking. I’d imagine you know exactly what I mean better than most people who walk up to this stall.”

I do.

”I thought you might.” She resumed her mending, unhurried. ”That’s why I stopped you the fourth time instead of the first. A person who understands the difference between the letter and the thing underneath it is worth knowing, mask or no mask, slate or no slate.”

Over the visits that followed, the small kindnesses accumulated without either of them naming them as such. A stool kept clear at her stall whether he’d said he was coming or not; a single dried apricot set aside from a trade with the fruit seller and offered without comment, which he pocketed unopened and let stand for what it was, a habit that had covered every gift he couldn’t eat since long before Halstead. She never asked what he was under the mask, or what the Foundry had been, or whether the slate meant he couldn’t speak or simply chose not to. She asked instead whether the ghosts game still had five players or six, whether the fountain had been drained yet for the season, whether he’d made friends with the old men and their endless board game — small questions, the kind a neighbor asked another neighbor, building a version of him that had nothing to do with any file.

On the fifth visit, a boy no older than ten showed up at the stall clutching a folded page and a fistful of coins that weren’t nearly enough, asking whether Nell could write to a father stationed somewhere he couldn’t pronounce. She counted the coins once, said the rate had apparently gone down today, and pulled out a fresh sheet without further comment. Ashfall-Zero sat through the whole of it, unacknowledged and unhurried, watching her draw out of the boy what he actually wanted his father to know versus what he thought a letter to a soldier was supposed to sound like. You told him the rate changed, he wrote, once the boy had gone, pockets lighter by the coins he’d brought and nothing more.

”The rate changes when it needs to.” She capped her ink without looking up. ”I don’t run charity, mind you — man three stalls down would tell you I’ve never given him a discount in fifteen years, and he’s not wrong to be sour about it. But a kid asking his father whether he still remembers the fishing spot isn’t the same transaction as two grown men arguing over an inheritance, and I’ll be damned if I price them the same just because they both involve a pen.” She glanced at him, not quite smiling. ”You’re wondering if I’d have charged you full price, that first day.”

I hadn’t wondered. I’m wondering now.

”Good. Keep wondering. Man who thinks he already knows the answer to a question like that usually likes the answer less than the one he’d actually get.”

It was on what he’d later count as his sixth visit to her stall that she set down her pen with more deliberateness than usual, the ordinary rhythm of the afternoon shifting into something she’d clearly been building toward.

”I keep a ledger,” she said. ”Every customer, every letter, going back longer than I’d like to admit to a stranger. Names, mostly — who wrote to whom, what got said, what got left out. It’s not sentimental. It’s just how I keep track of thirty years of other people’s business.” She turned the ledger’s spine toward him, though not the pages themselves. ”I’ve got six visits of you in here now, and every single one is logged under ’Ashfall-Zero,’ because that’s the only word you’ve ever given me. I’ve written that word enough times now that my hand’s started doing it without thinking, and somewhere in there I noticed I didn’t much like what my hand had gotten used to.”

It’s the word I have.

”I know it’s the word you have. I’m asking whether it’s the word you want. You don’t owe me an answer today. You don’t owe me one ever, if it comes to that — I’ll keep writing ’Ashfall-Zero’ in this ledger until the pages run out if that’s genuinely the answer. I just didn’t want to keep writing it without ever once asking whether it was the answer, or just the only one anybody had bothered giving you.”

He sat with the question longer than the stall’s quiet afternoon allowed, the mended, tape-scarred ledger sitting closed between them, six honest entries deep into a life that had never once asked to be logged under anything he’d chosen for himself.

I don’t have another word yet.

”Then I’ll keep the one I’ve got,” she said, ”until you bring me a better one.” She reached for her pen again, unhurried, moving on to whatever customer waited next. But she let her attention rest on him one moment longer before she did. ”Take it from someone who’s watched plenty of people work up to plenty of things — it won’t take you as long as you think. Most people just need someone to actually ask before they let themselves start looking.”

He walked back toward the Directorate gate with the ledger’s closed spine fixed in his mind. He thought of the blank tag still waiting on his desk, and the stylus he’d kept rather than used. It occurred to him, walking the last stretch of road under a sky going the color of the mask’s own dull grey, that this might be why her version of the question had landed somewhere Thorne’s paperwork and Grier’s careful promises never quite had. Nobody was filing anything. Nobody needed an answer for a form.

He reached the gate that evening with no new word to carry and, for the first time since a locker tag had first raised the question, no longer entirely sure that not having one yet meant nothing had changed.
