Subject Zero: Faceless

The escort was young, talked the whole walk without needing an answer, and didn’t ask about either wound: the shallow line on his arm from a service room, or the fresher one along his ribs from a ravine the escort hadn’t been told about yet.

”Corporal Nye’s going to want your face measured before anything else,” the escort said, somewhere around the second turn. ”Everybody Classified gets fitted for one, first thing — some plain field piece, nothing fancy, just enough that a mess hall doesn’t have to look at what’s under it if it doesn’t want to.”

Processing Three turned out to be a room with good lighting and bad memories built into its shape anyway.

Recessed fixtures, evenly spaced, built to leave nothing in shadow. A table with a paper sheet drawn tight across it, crackling faintly under a technician’s hands as she smoothed a fresh one down. Nothing here was designed to hurt him.

The technician drew blood without flinching at where the needle had to go in, adjusted an instrument shaped like a compass without a needle over his chest for a long moment, and frowned at whatever it told her. Her training hadn’t quite covered the number in front of her. She didn’t say what it was. She wrote something down, underlined it once, and moved on.

When she offered him water from a paper cup, he didn’t reach for it, and she didn’t push. She made a note instead, taking her time about it.

”Last thing,” Nye said, and produced a slate instead of a form. A thin, dark pane that woke to a faint interior light when her thumb pressed its edge, the same low Core-thrum he’d felt in the truck floor. She set a stylus beside it. ”You’ve got a voice, apparently, that isn’t a voice. Command’s asked everyone not to invite it. So we do this the old way instead. Name.”

He picked up the stylus. It sat strangely in his hand, light, balanced, nothing like the weight of the canteen.

Nothing came.

He set the tip down anyway and made the smallest mark he could, a single line with no name attached to it.

Nye looked at the mark, and then at him, and wrote UNIDENTIFIED above the line in a clean, unbothered hand.

A second technician came in near the end with a shallow case. A row of pale, featureless field masks, plain molded composite, sized rather than styled. ”Standard fit,” she said, holding one up against his profile, then another, checking neither for looks so much as seal. ”Everyone past this room wears one past this room.” She settled on the third, checked it once more, and set it aside without fitting it to him yet. ”Someone will bring this to your room before you’re walked anywhere public.”

He was sitting with that when the door opened without a knock.

The woman who came through it had a data-slate under one arm and a brisk, purposeful walk. A second lieutenant’s insignia sat at her collar, slightly crooked.

”Records flagged a match,” she said, to Nye rather than to him. ”Thought command would want this in front of him before it goes any further up the chain.”

”Recovered documentation from the Foundry site,” Quarrie said, setting the slate between them, angled so he could see it too. ”Partial, water-damaged, most of it being pieced together. But the compound designation on your extraction report is Foundry-Zero. And there’s exactly one processing designation in what survived that ties back to a vault matching that number.”

She turned the slate a few degrees, so the word sat right-side up in front of him.

SUBJECT ZERO.

Something in him recognized it before he’d finished reading it, a mark he’d carried for years without ever once having had to look straight at it.

”Does that mean anything to you?”

He nodded. Once. He didn’t try to explain what it meant, because he didn’t have the tools to.

Nye wrote it onto his file without comment, crossing out UNIDENTIFIED with a single line instead of erasing it, leaving it legible underneath.

He should have stopped there. He turned the new sense on Quarrie instead, on purpose this time, aimed with the same intent he’d used on Jost in the truck. Nobody had given him a name for it, so a private one had started to settle somewhere behind the reach itself, the Sight, because that was simpler than anything the Foundry or this base would ever bother to call it.

The blur sharpened into her face, the practiced neutrality of it, and under that, a flicker, quick and strange, gone almost before the sense could close around it. If he’d had to guess, he would have called it recognition.

”Lieutenant Quarrie,” Nye said. ”Everything all right?”

”Fine.” The word came out a half-beat too fast. She tucked the slate back under her arm and didn’t look at him again on her way to the door. ”Log it and get it up to command.”

She was gone before the door finished swinging shut, and the name sat there on the glass where she’d left it.

Nye walked him herself this time, no talkative escort, into a room smaller than Processing Three and meant, as far as he could tell, to hold rather than examine.

A cot. A stool bolted to the floor. A single fixture overhead, dimmer than anything the Foundry had ever lit him under. A slot in the door at chest height, closed.

”Someone will come get you,” Nye said. ”Could be an hour. Could be longer. Water’s outside the door if you change your mind. Just knock.”

She left before he could tell her he had no way to knock on anything but the door itself.

The door shut. A bolt turned somewhere in it, slow and certain.

He sat on the cot because sitting was permitted. The fixture overhead didn’t flicker. Nothing in the room resembled the one he’d woken up in. The shape of it matched anyway. A door that opened from the outside, and not from his.

He counted things to keep from counting time. Four corners. One stool. A seam in the floor that ran the room’s width and didn’t connect to anything he could see.

Time did what it had always done in rooms like this. It stopped being a measurement and started being a texture. He didn’t know how long had passed when the slot finally opened, just that it had been long enough that the sound of it made him flinch before he understood what it was.

A pair of eyes, young, found him through the gap. Someone new.

”Just checking,” the voice said, too fast. The slot shut again.

He got up and knocked, three knuckles against metal that gave back almost nothing. Nothing answered. He knocked again, harder, and heard footsteps that didn’t slow down on their way past.

He had one other way, and it had gone as long unnamed as the first one. He gave it the same treatment he’d given the Sight, and for the same reason, the Line, because that was what it was from the inside, one thread run out from him to somebody else with nothing on it but what he put there. He had used it once, without meaning to, and watched a medic scramble backward into a tire to get away from it. That had been reflex, unaimed, a shout in a small space. Aimed and quiet was a different thing. And he knew, from the half-second he’d been given through the gap, roughly what waited on the other side of this door. A soldier a few hours into a shift nobody senior wanted, tired and unfocused.

Nothing in that told him to stop.

He reached anyway, cautious, no louder than he could make it.

«How long,» he sent. Two words.

The scream, when it came, was something breaking that had never been built to bend in the first place.

The slot slammed open and shut once, hard enough to jump on its hinges. Something metal hit the floor outside. Then the lights changed.

A pale, even wash bleeding up out of the seam in the floor he’d counted twice and never once suspected. Lines etched into the walls caught the light and held it, and the air went thick and cold in a way that had nothing to do with temperature.

It found him from the inside.

Whatever the Line lived in went suddenly, violently quiet. Core, the same reservoir that kept his heart beating without a stomach behind it to feed it. He went down on one knee without deciding to.

Boots, several sets, arriving fast down the corridor outside. The bolt turned. The door came open onto four rifles and a room full of Meridian gray.

”Down. Down, now, hands where I can see them—”

He put his hands where they could see them. He had done this before, in a different uniform, under a different flag.

Nobody fired.

”He didn’t move,” someone said, disbelief edged into procedure. ”The room did that—”

”It’s not on its own,” a new voice cut through. ”It’s a Class-Two containment ward. It doesn’t trip for nothing. Somebody tell me what he did.”

She came through the wall of soldiers like water finding a gap, moving before the gap had fully opened. Meridian gray like the rest of them, no rifle, a data-slate under one arm she hadn’t so much as glanced at since entering the room.

”Stand down. All of you. He’s on the floor with his hands showing. That is not a threat, that is compliance.”

The rifles came down. Not all the way. Enough.

She crouched where the soldiers hadn’t, close enough to be studied and studying back. ”Can you stand?”

He could. He did, moving slow, a private’s rifle tracking him the whole way up before someone told the kid, quietly, to lower it.

”Grier,” she said, once the room had thinned to just the two of them and a guard posted well back from the door. ”I’m your liaison, effective as of an hour ago. The paperwork took its time catching up to the assignment, and the assignment took its time catching up to you, and this—” she gestured at the seam in the floor, dark again, dormant ”—is what happens in the gap between those two things.”

”Every holding room on this base built for someone Classified has one of those built into the floor. Standard construction. Nobody thought to mention it because nobody thought you’d need to know before somebody explained the rest to you properly, and somebody should have explained the rest to you an hour ago. That’s not on you.”

”The rule, going forward, is simple, and I’m sorry it’s arriving after instead of before. You don’t open a channel to anyone who hasn’t already agreed to have one opened. Not even something as small as how long. You wait, and you let it cost you the waiting, until someone tells you otherwise in a room with me in it.”

He understood the rule. That didn’t undo the four rifles, or the private’s shaking hands.

”They’ll use this,” she said, quiet now. ”Whoever reads that report tonight is going to read unauthorized contact, emergency containment triggered and none of the part where you knocked first and nobody answered. I can write what actually happened. I can’t promise it arrives before the other version does.”

She held the silence a moment longer than the sentence needed.

”Command’s moving your first interview up,” she said. ”Tonight. They were always going to ask you questions. Now they’re going to ask them like they already have an answer they’re waiting for you to confirm.”
