Subject Zero: Faceless

Jost had his radio off his shoulder before Bram finished the sentence, thumb working the frequency dial. ”Command, this is Ashfall-Six, contact at grid — belay that, contact resolved at grid, request immediate backtrack team and full sweep of the compound’s southern approach. Three hostiles down, unit-marked, not Dominion regulars. They came armed for a retrieval, not a fight.” A pause while something crackled back at him, and his jaw tightened around whatever it said. ”No. I am not putting the compound’s still got teeth in a field log for some desk to sit on until morning. You get someone with authority on this channel in the next five minutes, or I say it again louder to whoever answers next.”

Voss finished binding the line along his ribs tight enough to hold and not a stitch tighter, matter-of-fact about it now in a way she hadn’t quite managed over the smaller cut that morning. ”You did all right back there,” she said, quiet enough that it was mostly for him. ”I don’t hand that out for free, so don’t get used to hearing it.”

«I got you bled on twice in one day. That’s not doing all right. That’s a pattern.»

”It’s a pattern I’d take over the alternative every single time, and I’ll thank you not to argue me out of being grateful about it.” She sat back on her heels, and for a moment nobody in the ravine said anything at all.

Bram was the one who broke it, rifle finally lowered, eyes on the three men on the ground rather than on him. ”He moved like he’d done it a hundred times before today. Twice, now.” Flat, careful, a man reporting a second reading off the same instrument. ”Eleven years strapped to a table, and that’s the part of him that works without thinking, on command or off it. I’d like to know what it does on a day when it has three days’ warning instead of none.”

Nobody answered that one either.

The road ran a long time after that. He let himself watch the country instead. Hills going green in a way the compound’s grounds had never been allowed to, a river catching light somewhere off to the left, small and ordinary and entirely unbothered by what had happened an hour’s drive from its bank. A burned-out relay tower leaned over a crossroads further on, its Core housing cracked open and dark, and Jost’s eyes went to it and stayed a beat too long before he looked away.

There was something in the man’s face he wanted to understand, something that hadn’t been there back at the compound and hadn’t fully arrived yet even now, half an hour past a ravine full of men who’d come to take him back. The new sense had simply happened to him at the vault door. A face where a blur had been, arrived before he’d decided anything. This time he chose it, turning toward Jost’s profile on purpose, bracing for whatever answered.

Nothing happened at first. He held Jost’s profile in whatever passed for his attention and waited, and for a long moment there was only the ordinary blur-made-particular the sense standing in for eyes had learned to give him. Then he stopped waiting for it to happen to him and did, instead, something closer to reaching — the same motion, almost, as the one that had put words in Voss’s head, aimed outward this time through a different door.

Jost’s face opened under it like a held breath finally let go.

The set of a jaw held too still, the small tension at the eyes that thirty years of command training had taught him to smooth over for everyone in this truck but hadn’t, quite, smoothed all the way for something that could put three armed men on the ground in the time it took Bram to reload once. Under the practiced calm was fear of how close the ravine had come to going a different way, and of a report that would outlive whoever ended up signing it no matter which way the next hour’s radio call went.

He had spent years learning every version of a room that wanted to hurt him. He had never once been handed a man who was afraid of what almost hadn’t been enough to keep him safe.

”You’re staring,” Jost said, without turning his head.

He held still. Stillness was still the only apology he had.

”That’s fine,” Jost said, after a moment. ”Everybody in this truck is doing some version of it.” He checked the road behind them through the flap and left it at that. ”Forty minutes out. Less, if the second checkpoint’s awake.”

Voss made a small sound in her throat. Bram didn’t make any sound at all.

The forward base announced itself as a line of Core-lit perimeter stanchions before it announced itself as anything else. Pale, steady light strung along a fence that hummed faintly, a ward laid into the wire itself. Then guard towers. Then a gate wide enough for three trucks abreast, and a checkpoint crew who waved the convoy through without slowing it, which told him something about what kind of clearance a radio call from an hour out had bought.

The truck stopped inside the wire. The tailgate dropped.

Beyond it, the base unfolded in straight lines and hard angles. Rows of prefabricated barracks, a motor pool with three more Core-thrumming transports idling in a neat rank, a comms mast strung with wire that hummed at a pitch just under hearing. Soldiers crossed the yard in twos and threes, none of them slowing, all of them finding some reason to look at the truck anyway, its hood ragged with bright new holes, its lead vehicle conspicuously absent from the count.

What was waiting for them was a woman in Meridian gray with a clipboard and no expression.

She didn’t flinch at his face. It told him what kind of place this was. A category she was already prepared to check a box for.

”Ashfall-Six,” she said, reading off the manifest clipped in front of her. ”One live extraction, Foundry compound designation Foundry-Zero. Flagged priority, unconfirmed classification.” Her eyes went up, over the clipboard, and found him, and stayed there a beat longer than the sentence needed, catching, this time, on the fresh binding at his side. ”No stretcher required?”

”He walked out,” Jost said. ”Walked here too, the long way, through an ambush somebody planned specifically to take him back rather than kill him. We’re down a lead truck and up three confirmed hostiles, unit-marked, and he’s most of the reason four of my people are walking into this base instead of being carried. Put all of that in whatever you’re writing.”

Something in her pen slowed before it caught back up to its own rhythm. ”Noted.” She made a mark, and it took her considerably longer than the last one had. ”Medical’s queued behind classification on this one. Command’s orders, not mine. He’ll be seen once we’ve got something on paper to put him under.”

”He needs a doctor before he needs paperwork,” Voss said.

”He needs both,” the woman said, worn smooth like a line she’d delivered to some other unit’s medic that morning. ”I don’t set the queue.”

She stepped closer, close enough now that he could see the clipboard’s top page clearly. A form half-filled, his line of it blank across three separate fields.

”Name and designation,” she said.

He had neither. He’d known that for years, in the abstract, a fact about a country he’d never once had reason to visit. It hadn’t cost him anything, on the walk out of that vault this morning, to not have an answer.

It cost him something now.

She waited exactly as long as procedure required her to wait, pen resting on the blank, prepared for the blank to stay a blank.

Behind her, at the tailgate, he felt more than saw the checkpoint crew’s attention sharpen at the silence stretching where a name should have landed.

The pen didn’t move.

When the blank stayed blank, she wrote something else there instead. Three characters, a dash, a number. She capped the pen and looked past him at Jost.

”Ashfall-Six. Sign here for custody transfer. He’s intake’s from this point.”

Jost signed without looking down at the page. ”Someone radioed ahead about the incident at the compound. Make sure whoever reads this file gets the whole account.”

”Noted.” She was turning the clipboard to face the next name on her list.

Voss touched nothing this time, but looked at him a beat longer than the paperwork required. ”Make them look at that side,” she said. ”Properly. I did it in a ditch.”

Bram said nothing. He was walking, rifle slung, moving fast enough that no one would mistake it for anything but leaving.

Then it was just him, and a base he didn’t know, and a corridor someone was gesturing him toward.
