Subject Zero: Faceless

The checkpoint guard waved the transport through without looking up a second time, and after that nobody looked at the manifest at all.

Inside the fence, the Ninth Front did not resolve into anything as simple as a base. It was closer to a town that had never finished being built and had stopped waiting to be — rows of prefabricated shelters strung with Core-lamps that guttered instead of glowing steady, a motor pool three times the size of the one he’d left, and, past all of it, the low percussion he’d felt through the transport’s frame an hour out, now loud enough to separate into individual strikes. Nobody in the yard flinched at it. He filed that under things he hadn’t learned yet.

A corporal met the transport at the gate with a clipboard he didn’t consult and a pace he clearly expected to be matched without conversation.

”Ashfall-Zero.” Not a question. He’d read the manifest before it arrived. ”Major’s expecting you. Try to keep up — he doesn’t like waiting on paperwork he signed for.”

The corporal didn’t ask about the mask. Didn’t glance at it twice, even. Out here, apparently, a mask was just something a soldier wore, and one more question nobody had the hour to spend on.

They crossed the yard at a clip. A medevac skimmer sat cooling near a row of stretchers, three of them occupied, one of the wounded arguing weakly with a medic about whether he was going back out tonight. Ammunition crates stacked chest-high ran the length of a supply row long enough that its far end disappeared into the dark. Somewhere, a field kitchen was arguing with itself about portions.

None of it paused for him. That, at least, matched the one thing intake had gotten right — nobody here had time to be afraid of a file before they’d met the man attached to it.

He’d spent two weeks being the most interesting thing in every room he entered. Here, he was competing with a war for attention, and losing.

A strange kind of relief, being outranked by artillery fire. He set it beside everything else about tonight that still felt unfamiliar, to examine later, when there was more of the night left to spend on it.

The command post was a reinforced tent with a floor, three slates bolted to a folding table, and a man standing over all three of them like they’d personally disappointed him.

”Major Ferro,” the corporal said, and left before either of them acknowledged it.

Ferro didn’t look up right away. He was reading something off the center slate, doing arithmetic he suspected he wouldn’t like the answer to.

”Command sent me a Class One out of Meridian’s own black-site salvage program with a note that says ’Asset track, effective immediately, use as you see fit.’” He set the slate down without closing whatever was on it. ”Four days before a push I’ve been planning for three weeks, with no handoff brief and nobody from your case to walk me through you — just a designation somebody thought sounded better than the last one.”

He looked up then, and studied the mask with the same undiplomatic thoroughness he’d have given a piece of equipment nobody bothered explaining to him.

”I’ve read the file. Most of it, anyway — command redacted the parts they didn’t think I needed, which tells me plenty on its own.” Ferro folded his arms. ”I don’t care what you survived. I care what you do when the ground under my people goes wrong at oh-two-hundred and there’s no colonel standing by to write it up afterward as an incident. So before I put a name on a duty roster, I want to know what I’m putting there.”

I don’t know exactly what I am either. He didn’t reach for the slate to write it. Some answers cost more delivered plainly than deflected, and this felt like one of the cheaper ones to give straight.

He held out his hand for the stylus instead, and Ferro passed it over without comment — aware, apparently, of how this went.

Asset track. Class I on paper. What that turns out to mean under fire hasn’t been tested yet.

Ferro read it twice. ”Honest, at least. I’ve had officers arrive with better paperwork and worse answers.” He said it like he was crossing an item off a list he hadn’t wanted to keep in the first place. ”You don’t talk.”

If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it’s taken without the author’s consent. Report it.

Not with a mouth.

”Telepathy.” Ferro said the word like he was tasting it for the first time and finding it about as useful as he’d expected. ”Command’s brief mentioned it. Mentioned a consent requirement too, which I assume means I’m not getting a demonstration unless I ask nicely.”

You’d have to ask first. There’s no other way it works.

”Good.” Ferro didn’t ask. ”Keep it that way here. Last thing this command needs is a rumor that the new arrival’s been in anyone’s head without permission. You’ll get consent when you’ve earned enough trust for someone to give it freely, and not before — call it operational necessity, if you want a reason that isn’t about being polite.”

It was the same rule the colonel’s base had built a containment ward around. Here, it seemed, the rule alone was expected to hold.

Ferro turned the center slate around so he could see it. The readout was plainer than anything the intake base had ever shown him: a working document somebody updated between other duties, with no letterhead and no seal to dress it up.

[TRANSFER FILE: ASHFALL-ZERO. STATUS: ASSET TRACK — CLASS I / SUBJECT. FIELD ASSESSMENT: PENDING. CALIBRATION TYPE: UNCLASSIFIED. NOTE: OUTPUT MAGNITUDE FLAGGED ANOMALOUS IN PRIOR TESTING — SEE ATTACHED.]

”’Anomalous.’” Ferro tapped the word once with a finger that had clearly signed off on worse understatements. ”That’s command for ’we broke a piece of equipment and don’t want to write down how.’ I’ve seen that word before. It’s never once meant less than it sounds like.”

The equipment wasn’t built for what came out of me. I don’t know what type it is. Nobody does yet.

”Then we’re the same amount of ignorant on that point, which I’ll admit I prefer to being the only one.” Ferro pulled the slate back and made a short note on it — nothing dramatic, a line added to a longer list. ”I’m not going to spend a week finding that out gently. There isn’t a week. There’s a push in four days and a squad short a rifle since Kestrin took shrapnel Tuesday, and command’s answer to both problems apparently arrived on the same transport.”

He set the stylus down. The word push sat differently than demonstration ever had — raw and immediate, decided by people already inside the outcome instead of watching it happen from a gallery.

”I’m not putting you through some intake board first,” Ferro went on, ”because I don’t have officers to spare for one and this front doesn’t grade on a curve. You’ll get a squad, you’ll get whatever gear the quartermaster can fit you for tonight, and you’ll find out what you are the same way everyone else in this command found out what they were: doing the job in front of them, and living with what it costs.”

And if what comes out of me is worse than anyone’s accounted for.

”Then it happens in front of people already braced for something going wrong tonight, instead of a gallery that clapped when it did last time.” Ferro said it without heat, the closest thing to a joke he seemed willing to spend on the conversation, and didn’t wait to see if it landed as one. ”Consider that the mercy version of how this could’ve gone.”

A runner ducked into the tent before either of them could take the silence any further — young, out of breath, saluting a beat too fast to be entirely necessary.

”Sir. Lieutenant Osei’s asking if the new attachment’s cleared yet. Third squad ships out at oh-four for the forward listening post, and she wants him briefed before wheels-up if he’s coming.”

Ferro didn’t look surprised. If anything, he looked satisfied — a problem solving itself faster than he’d planned for.

”He’s coming.” Ferro had turned back to the center slate, three tasks past this one in his own head. ”Tell Osei she’s got him for the push and everything leading up to it. And tell her—” he paused, glanced once more at the mask, at whatever he’d decided he could and couldn’t read off it ”—tell her not to waste time being careful with him. We don’t have the hours for careful.”

The runner was gone before he’d finished the thought.

A different corporal walked him to the quartermaster’s stores — younger than the first, still catching up to whatever the transport had actually delivered. The stores were a long tent lit by a single working lamp, shelves of matched gear running back further than the light reached, and a sergeant behind a folding counter who didn’t look up until the manifest landed in front of her.

She read it once, looked at him once, and didn’t ask any of the questions her face clearly had ready.

”Field kit, standard weight. Rifle’s a loaner till yours clears requisition — don’t lose it, I’ll never hear the end of it from the armory.” She slid a crate across the counter, then a ration pack on top of it, out of a habit that plainly had nothing to do with him specifically.

He didn’t reach for the pack. She caught the refusal half a second late, glanced once at the mask, and set the ration aside without comment — one more thing nobody here seemed to need explained twice.

The rifle, when it came, sat heavier in his hands than he’d expected from something meant to be carried all night. He turned it over once, found the safety by feel rather than by looking for it, and understood, distantly, that some part of eleven years in the Foundry had prepared him for this weight without ever once handing him a version of it to hold.

He’d learned to survive violence long before anyone thought to ask whether he could also carry it.

The thought arrived colder than the rest of his own thinking usually ran — foreign enough that he set it aside rather than examine it, one more piece of tonight he had no hours left to make sense of.
