Subject Zero: Faceless

They took Hollis to the medical tent and everyone else to be processed in the ordinary way — weapons accounted for, kit inventoried, water and food offered to five people who could eat it. Osei went with Hollis as far as the tent flap, said something to him too low for anyone else to catch, and didn’t look back toward Ashfall-Zero once on her way to file her own written report. Wren tried, and failed, to find a way to say goodbye that didn’t sound like one; in the end she just touched his sleeve once, briefly, and let the processing line pull her away before either of them had to make more of it than that.

Nobody offered Ashfall-Zero anything. A corporal he didn’t recognize walked him straight past the processing line instead, to the command post, where the order that had followed them down off the ridge was already waiting to be obeyed.

Ferro was there. So was a colonel Ashfall-Zero had never seen before, full colonel, Corps insignia, a face schooled into a patience so practiced it looked like he’d been waiting for this meeting since long before it had a date. And by the door, arms folded, down from forward staging on the first transport by the look of the dust on her: Grier.

The warmth she usually kept underneath the procedure wasn’t there this time. She stood very still, waiting to find out whether this particular door was about to open onto good news or bad.

”Colonel Marrow,” Ferro said, by way of introduction, in a tone that offered no opinion either way. ”Corps. He’s been asking about you since the field assessment came back anomalous.”

Marrow didn’t stand. ”Sit,” he said, to the empty chair across the table, and waited to see whether Ashfall-Zero would.

He sat.

”I’ve read Lieutenant Osei’s report twice,” Marrow said, without preamble, a folder open in front of him that he didn’t need to consult. ”Crest secured. One friendly wounded, ambulatory. One confirmed Calibration use, defensive, in keeping with Captain Dray’s rules of engagement.” He turned a page he had clearly committed to memory. ”Effects atypical. That’s her exact phrase. I’d like you to tell me what it means, in your own words, if you have any to spare for it.”

Ashfall-Zero had the slate out before the sentence finished. I don’t have better words than hers.

”Try anyway.”

A soldier attacked Corporal Hollis. I stopped him. It didn’t feel like the shelf.

”How didn’t it feel like the shelf.”

He held the slate a long moment before writing the next line, aware that every person in the room was reading the pause itself as an answer.

Something came off him when he died. I didn’t ask for it and I don’t know how to give it back.

The room went quiet in a way that had nothing procedural in it.

”Could you have stopped it.” Marrow asked it with no particular emphasis, a man setting a weight on a scale rather than springing a trap. ”At any point. The reaching-in, the taking — was there a moment where a decision of yours would have changed what happened.”

I’ve asked myself that since the crest. The kill, yes. That was mine — I chose it, and I’d choose it again with the bayonet that close to one of my squad. What came after the kill had no moment in it. It was finished before I knew it had started. If there was a door, I never saw one.

”Then that’s the sentence I’ll be reading in every review of your file for the next year,” Marrow said. ”If there was a door, I never saw one. I’d like it to be wrong. Nothing in Osei’s account suggests it is.”

He reached into his kit pocket without being asked, and set the wooden bird on the table between them, small, rough, the one wing worn smooth by a thumb that would never touch it again. He’d brought it without being told to, and no one in the room moved to take it from him.

He had a daughter. I know that because I took it from him when he died. I didn’t want to know it. I know it anyway.

Ferro looked at the bird for a long moment and didn’t touch it.

Marrow did. He turned it once between two fingers, set it back down where it had been, and looked up with an expression that hadn’t softened, but had shifted, the careful stillness of a man revising a theory in real time rather than merely confirming one he’d walked in with.

”You brought this to a Corps debrief,” he said, ”instead of leaving it with the body.”

I didn’t decide to take it either. This is only what happened.

”That,” Marrow said, ”is the part of your report I actually believe.”

”With respect, Colonel.” Grier hadn’t moved from the door, and her voice, when it came, was even, controlled, and entirely unwilling to be talked over. ”He filed a truthful account of something none of us have a name for yet, unprompted, including the parts that make him look worst. That’s not the profile of an asset trying to hide what he is.”

”I didn’t say it was,” Marrow said. ”I said it’s not reassuring, either. An ability that pulls something off a kill without being asked — without him being able to stop it, by his own account — worries me considerably more than an ability that overshoots a measurement rig.”

”It saved a squad member’s life,” Ferro said, the first thing he’d volunteered since Marrow started asking questions. ”Under the ROE Captain Dray wrote herself. I read that report the same as you did, Colonel. I don’t see a soldier who broke a rule. I see a mission that came back with the ridge held and five of six soldiers walking off it.”

”Six,” Grier said. ”Five of six Meridian soldiers. He walked off it too.”

Marrow didn’t answer that directly. He closed the folder instead, slow, deliberate, a gesture that ended one part of the conversation without pretending to have resolved it.

Ashfall-Zero wrote before anyone stood.

Before you file it. I want to ask you for something.

Marrow’s hand stayed where it was on the folder. His tone, when it came, read as plain curiosity, the interest of a man watching a piece of equipment behave in a way its specifications hadn’t predicted. ”Most subjects in your position wait to be told. Tell me why you didn’t.”

Because waiting is what I did for years, and it worked exactly as well as you’d expect.

Marrow’s mouth didn’t move, but something in his eyes did, the same small recalibration Ashfall-Zero had watched happen a minute earlier, over a wooden bird.

”Fair,” he said. ”Go on.”

You’re deciding whether what happened on that ridge was a fluke you can’t rely on again, or a liability you can’t afford to keep fielding. I don’t think it was either. I think it was the only thing available to me in the half-second I had, and I think if you put me back in a half-second like that one, it would answer the same way. I can’t prove that from a chair. Nobody can prove a reflex from a chair.

”And what would prove it.”

Something harder than the ridge. Something with more time to plan around it going wrong, and less room for anyone to say afterward that I got lucky. If it holds up under conditions built specifically to break it, that’s a real answer. If it doesn’t, you’ll have the data you’re currently missing, and I’ll have earned whatever you decide to do next.

Ferro shifted where he stood, arms tightening once across his chest, a man weighing what this would cost him operationally if it went wrong on his front specifically.

By the door, Grier’s folded arms came apart. She had walked into the room prepared to argue that he was safe to keep on the roster, and what he had just asked for was the opposite of that argument. She said nothing. Marrow noticed her not saying it.

”And the other three,” Marrow said. ”The reference cases. You know your file sets their weather now. If I field you on something built to break you and it breaks you, that’s not just your answer — it’s the answer their case officers cite for a decade.”

Then they deserve it to be a real answer. Not a safe one that tells nobody anything, held up afterward as proof of things it never tested.

Marrow was quiet long enough that Ashfall-Zero started composing a second line, then stopped himself. He’d said the thing.

”I had a report ready,” Marrow said finally, ”recommending you stay on the roster under current restrictions, unassigned to anything beyond garrison duty, until that first negative reading gets a full lab evaluation nobody out here is equipped to run. That report would have kept you safe, kept me safe, and told command absolutely nothing they don’t already not-know.” He tapped the table once, a flat, decisive sound. ”You’ve just talked me into filing a different one.”

He stood, and gathered the folder under one arm.

”Calibration type remains unresolved. This incident is being logged separately, flagged for full review alongside the anomalous field reading, not folded into either one quietly. Until that review concludes, Ashfall-Zero stays on the roster. Under closer observation than he’s had. That’s not a punishment. It’s the only version of trust I currently have room to extend.”

He left without waiting for anyone to respond to that, and the door closed behind him with more finality than it needed.

Grier crossed the room at last and stood close enough that Ashfall-Zero could have reached her without moving. She didn’t say anything about the bird sitting on the table between them, small and rough and entirely someone else’s, though her eyes went to it once, and stayed there a second longer than the rest of the room had allowed themselves.

I need to know what happens to it, he wrote, meaning the bird, meaning the review, meaning both at once and letting her decide which.

”So do I,” she said. ”Nobody’s told me either.”

She reached for the bird herself then, slow enough that he could have stopped her, and turned it once in her own fingers, holding what he’d been holding for as long as it took to understand why he hadn’t been able to put it down. She set it back in front of him rather than keep it, and closed his hand gently around it herself.

”Whatever they decide to call this,” she said, ”you don’t carry it alone.” She nodded once at his closed fist. ”I mean that.”

”Colonel Marrow requests approval for a controlled operational assessment,” Ferro read aloud two mornings later, off a slate handed to him by a runner who’d clearly been told to wait for a reaction and hadn’t gotten one worth reporting. ”Objective and difficulty level deliberately elevated above standard tasking. Subject Ashfall-Zero to be fielded under close observation, full after-action review by Compliance and Corps both.” He looked up. ”He’s not giving you an easy one. He’s giving you one built to fail if there’s anything in you that can fail.”

Good, Ashfall-Zero wrote. That’s the one I asked for.

”That’s either the healthiest thing you’ve said since you got here,” Ferro said, ”or the single worst idea I’ve heard all month. I haven’t decided which.”

He handed the slate over. Ashfall-Zero read it twice, not because the words were complicated, but because they were the first words in this entire process that had ever asked him for something instead of about him.

Objective, tasking, terrain, all blank, pending Corps approval of the operation’s actual shape. Only one line was filled in with any certainty, and it was the line that mattered.
