Chapter 1604: Corpse Governor (1)

The Corpse Governor was someone who had the entire Lower Grave Strata within the palms of his hands, and his authority was unchallengeable because of this core area of the Undead Boundary.

Although the Corpse Governor was also a Half-Abyssal King, he was infinitely closer to the Abyssal King realm, and if not for the mysterious restriction of the Undead Cradle, he would’ve become an Abyssal King long ago.

At this moment, the Corpse Governor received an urgent alert, and there weren’t many who could send him this secret alert, and with the Great Corpse Carnival in full swing, he didn’t dare ignore it.

He tapped lightly upon the arm of his throne with his bony finger, and the scene within the massive mirror rippled before a projection from the Evernight Alliance Hub’s hall appeared, and with the demonic mask, the Midnight Duke appeared.

The corpse flames within his hollow eyes flickered with a hint of astonishment after seeing the least expected face on the other end.

After all, even if the Midnight Duke wanted to have a conversation with him, it should be the Quasi-Abyssal Grand Lord to explain the situation first.

But the Corpse Governor knew a Quasi-Abyssal Grand Lord was no match for an Evernight Duke, on the same realm as him, and the Midnight Duke had probably forced the former to gain an audience with the latter.

Nonetheless, there were many Corpse Cultivators in the Upper Battlefield right now, so the Corpse Governor played it cool, even if he was slightly dissatisfied with the Midnight Duke’s blunt discourtesy.

”Mr. Midnight Duke, I hope everything is going alright with the Evernight Trial, and our clan’s performance is up to your standards.” His voice was ghastly and icy even when he was being polite.

A hint of fury surfaced in the depths of Midnight Duke’s eyes from sheer irritation because the entire Evernight Council held Undead Clan in contempt, and they all considered them mortal enemies.

Moreover, the Corpse Governor was the leader of the Undead Cradle, and despite setting up many traps and allures alike, he never showed any opening and dared not leave the safety of the Undead Boundary.

The Evernight Council also knows about the Corpse Clan’s deeply seated hatred, and the person among the Corpse Clan who hates them the most was none other than the Corpse Governor.

Yet despite his hatred, the Corpse Governor never showed any sign of recklessness or trying to be reckless, and always kept the Corpse Clan in check, and even formed an ’Alliance’ with the Evernight Council.

These kinds of enemies were the most dangerous, and the Evernight Council would get rid of the Corpse Governor even at the smallest chance they got.

However, the Midnight Duke hides his hastily well because today he needed to play nice and get any hints about Nomad while also making sure the Corpse Governor won’t suspect anything.

”Mr. Corpse Governor, the preparations are flawless, and His Majesty is very pleased with the enthusiasm that your clan has shown for the Evernight Trial.” The Midnight Duke impassively stated that even if he wanted to, he simply couldn’t appear amiable.

Back when he heard the Evernight Council’s new ’demands’ about turning the Undead Cradle into the trial grounds for the Evernight Trial, the Corpse Governor was astounded and thought of it as a trap.

That’s why he didn’t outright agree to send his clansmen outside the Undead Boundary. But unexpectedly, the Evernight Council gave its absolute surety by signing a powerful law contract, and only then did the Corpse Governor agree.

Furthermore, the Corpse Clan had been suppressed by the Evernight Council for a long time now, so everyone wanted to get revenge for their predecessors and themselves.

That’s why now that the Midnight Duke had suddenly appeared here and was speaking so politely, a peculiar light flickered in the Corpse Governor’s eyes.

But acted as usual as he nodded, ”Please give my sincere thanks to his majesty for this subordinate a chance to show his loyalty to the Council.”

The Midnight Duke nodded impassively, but inwardly, he was slightly panicking because he couldn’t detect anything from the Corpse Governor’s voice, but his guts told him that the latter still didn’t know about Nomad.

Nonetheless, he still must do his utmost best to get more clues while making sure the Corpse Governor won’t suspect anything.

”Is there any other command his majesty has for this subordinate?” The Corpse Governor politely inquired as he really started to feel something was off.

”N...there is nothing that His Majesty wants right at this moment.” The Midnight Duke impassively replied, ”However, I want to ask something personal from Mr. Corpse Governor, if you don’t mind?”

The Corpse Governor seemed intrigued as he nodded, ”It’s the first time that someone from your side is interested in this old ghost’s matters. Please go ahead, I’ll try to quench your curiosity to the best of my abilities.”

The Midnight Duke stayed silent for a moment before he finally spoke, his tone icy, ”Mr. Corpse Governor, I’ve heard from another fellow, Evernight Duke, that your Companion died under her hands during the war with your clan, and she told me that she died protecting you.

”There are even rumors that you used your companion as a shield so you could get into the Undead Boundary. I meant no disrespect and was merely curious about the real event. After all, if one day, you lost the protection of the Undead Boundary, would you seek out that Evernight Duke?”

The Midnight Duke might say everything like it was just another matter, but apparently, he had just spoken of the taboo matter of the Undead Cradle because not even those who know of it dared to speak about it, especially within the Corpse Clan.

Moreover, after the ’alliance’ was established, the Evernight Council also not mention this matter anymore, just in case the Corpse Governor went on a rampage and broke the deal.

Yet today, the Midnight Duke dared to bring out this matter right on the Corpse Governor’s face, and for a moment, the corpse flames within his eyes jumped violently and went extremely dark.

However, unexpectedly, the Corpse Governor seemed to have become normal again and chuckled, ”Heh, Mr. Midnight Duke, we are all cultivators, and it goes without saying that our lives are more important than some fickle companionship.

”In fact, if you see Lady Dread Duchess, please give her my thanks for going easy on me that day, or we wouldn’t be having this chat like friends!”
