Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Veyrath submitted the request through the correct channel.

Max almost wished he had not.

The defensive commander wanted a formal assessment of Max’s physical abilities, combat judgment, and ability to reach protected positions during an emergency. The request had passed Anna’s review because it concerned the survival of the Dungeon Master. Quin had added a note stating that no defense plan could account for abilities no one had measured.

Max read the request twice.

”You both approved this.” He said.

”I approved finding out what you can do.” Anna replied. ”I did not volunteer you for public entertainment.”

”The Arena will be closed.” Quin said. ”Veyrath requested your elite team, three healers, and no spectators.”

”Sanctuary prevents violence outside the Arena. We could plan for me to remain outside it.”

”An enemy capable of reaching the core during defense mode will not respect Sanctuary’s ordinary rules.” Anna said.

Max could not argue with the premise. During the first challenge, defense mode had canceled instancing and turned the dungeon into one shared territory. His enemies had not reached the core, but planning around the assumption that every future enemy would fail just as early was poor leadership.

He approved the assessment.

Veyrath had prepared the Arena without transforming it into a spectacle. Weighted frames stood along one wall. Moving targets occupied another. A marked course crossed uneven ground, barriers, and narrow passages. Max’s elite combat team waited in practical armor rather than ceremonial equipment.

They were serious soldiers. None appeared amused by the assignment.

Veyrath met Max at the Arena entrance.

”The purpose is not to determine whether you can defeat your guards.” Veyrath said. ”If the test becomes a contest between you and them, I designed it badly.”

”What are you trying to determine?” Max asked.

”Whether you should hold position, withdraw, assist, or allow the team to move you during different threats.”

Veyrath wanted answers because uncertainty created hesitation. A guard who did not know whether Max could cross a collapsed passage alone might abandon a defensive position to help him. Another might assume Max could survive an attack that exceeded his actual limits.

Neither mistake required cowardice. Both came from missing information.

Max changed into the training armor waiting for him. It was lighter than the equipment worn by his elite team but stronger than anything he had used when first becoming a Dungeon Master.

The first tests measured strength without combat.

Max lifted weighted frames, dragged a stone block across the Arena floor, and held a reinforced gate while controlled pressure pushed against it. Veyrath increased the weight until Max could no longer compensate through position and leverage.

The results exceeded Max’s expectations.

He had grown accustomed to minor demonstrations of strength. Heavy doors felt lighter. Long walks did not tire him. Objects that once required help could be moved alone. Those changes had accumulated slowly enough to become ordinary.

The measurement made them difficult to dismiss.

”You could move debris that would trap an ordinary squad.” Veyrath said. ”You could not hold a breached gate against a large creature for long.”

”How large?” Max asked.

Veyrath named three creatures from the dungeon records. Max could overpower two under favorable conditions. The third would force him backward regardless of effort.

”Useful, not unlimited.” Max said.

”The preferred result.” Veyrath replied. ”People who believe their strength has no limit usually discover one at the wrong moment.”

Speed produced a less satisfying answer.

Max crossed open ground quickly and reacted well to visible movement. He lost time whenever the course required him to choose among several routes. His body could move faster than his experience could select the correct response.

Quin recorded the hesitation.

”You are not slow.” Quin said. ”You are deciding what the test expects.”

”The test expects me to reach the other side.”

”You checked every route for a hidden condition.”

Max looked back at the course. One passage appeared easier, one offered better cover, and one passed close to a target mechanism. He had spent time determining whether the obvious path was a trap.

”Most dungeon routes punish people for ignoring alternatives.” Max said.

”Most defensive withdrawals punish people for studying them while something follows.” Veyrath replied.

The answer was not criticism for its own sake. Veyrath needed Max to recognize when a decision belonged to him and when the person responsible for his safety had already made it.

The elite team’s captain approached with a proposed signal.

If the team called a route clear, Max would follow without independently inspecting it unless he possessed information they lacked. Max could override them, but he would state why. The arrangement prevented silent disagreement from slowing everyone.

Max accepted it.

Anna asked whether the same signal should apply when she accompanied Max.

The captain answered carefully.

”If you are part of the protected group, yes. If you are acting with separate authority, you may receive a different route.”

”You would split us.” Max said.

”If keeping you together creates a worse target or sends one of you toward greater danger.”

Max disliked the answer because it was correct. He had treated remaining beside Anna as an instinctive responsibility. His team might need each of them to follow different instructions so neither became an obstacle to protecting the other.

Anna understood his reaction.

”You cannot abandon your assigned route because you see me moving somewhere else.” she said.

”And you would follow yours?”

”If the people responsible for the plan believe separating us is safer.”

Veyrath added the exception. Either of them could respond to information the guards lacked, but concern alone did not count as new information.

The agreement was more difficult than a promise to protect one another. It required them to trust people whose instructions might briefly look like separation.

”Add it to the larger exercises.” Max said. ”I want us to practice before it matters.”

Anna agreed. Neither treated the discussion as a prediction that danger would reach them. Unknown behavior remained a weakness even when everyone intended to act well.

The moving-target exercise measured accuracy and awareness. Max used the weapons he already knew rather than beginning a new discipline for the assessment. He struck stationary targets reliably and moving targets inconsistently. His power increased the consequences of a hit without improving the judgment required to choose one.

Veyrath added friendly markers among the targets.

Max slowed immediately.

”A real attacker will use civilians and defenders as cover.” Veyrath said.

”Then I should not be making hurried attacks through them.”

”Agreed. Your strength does not obligate you to use it.”

They moved to controlled sparring.

The elite team did not surround Max and beat him until the result became obvious. One soldier tested his guard. Another tested his ability to respond while receiving instructions. A third forced him to move around Anna and Quin, who stood beyond the marked boundary as protected noncombatants.

Max’s increased speed and strength allowed him to recover from errors that would once have ended the exchange. It did not prevent the errors.

He focused on the soldier before him and lost track of the route behind him. He reacted to a feint strongly enough to pull himself out of position. When Veyrath called a withdrawal, Max looked for the reason before moving.

The captain caught his arm and pulled him across the marked line.

Max resisted for a fraction of a second.

The team stopped.

”There.” Veyrath said.

Max knew which failure he meant.

”I was trying to remain standing.” Max said.

”Your guard was trying to move you.”

”I did not know why.”

”The collapsing marker behind you represented a threat you could not see. If every guard must explain before you cooperate, the explanation becomes more important than your survival.”

Max looked at the captain.

”Would you have released me if I ordered you to?”

”Yes.” the captain replied. ”I would also expect you to understand that the order might kill you.”

The honesty mattered. The team would not decide that protecting Max allowed them to control him. Max’s authority also did not make every instinct correct.

They repeated the exercise.

When the captain pulled him, Max moved. Once they reached cover, he asked what had changed. The answer took two seconds when no one was pretending to escape a collapsing passage.

The final assessment involved Max’s connection to the dungeon.

Inside his territory, he possessed awareness and authority that ordinary fighters could not reproduce. He could access records, recognize changes, and direct creatures. Those abilities made him valuable during an emergency, but using them divided his attention.

Veyrath presented conflicting reports while the elite team moved him through the course. Max identified which reports affected the core, delegated two to Anna, and ignored one that the tiered response system had already assigned elsewhere.

He reached the protected position without breaking formation.

”Better.” Veyrath said.

”You sound disappointed.” Anna observed.

”I prefer flaws that can be corrected. We found several.”

The assessment ended with no winner. Max sat beside the Arena floor while Quin reviewed the record.

His physical growth was substantial. His endurance had increased. His reactions were faster. His ability to combine combat with dungeon oversight remained limited because he had almost no reason to practice it.

”How often do you want to repeat this?” Max asked.

Veyrath proposed short monthly sessions and larger exercises whenever defenses changed. The elite team would train with Max often enough to understand his movements without turning his life into constant preparation for attack.

Anna supported the schedule.

”You expected me to object.” she said.

”I expected you to question whether Veyrath was trying to turn me into a soldier.”

”He is trying to stop soldiers from tripping over you.”

Veyrath did not dispute the description.

Quin added one final note.

Max had not become a better fighter simply because he had become stronger. He had become someone whose mistakes required more force to punish and whose correct actions could accomplish more.
