Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Ironcloud’s council did not summon Helmar Ruskell quietly.

The order traveled through official messengers, family channels, commercial offices, and every airship station authorized to carry council notices. It named charges of attempted murder, unlawful assassination contracts, slave trafficking, and refusal to disclose workers held at Blackwater Reach. Helmar was ordered to appear within seven days.

His answer arrived on the sixth.

The sealed statement accused Renn of conspiring with foreign adventurers to steal Ruskell property. It described Serrik as a criminal hired by unknown enemies and dismissed the documents found in his room as obvious fabrications. Helmar would not abandon Blackwater Reach merely to participate in a proceeding designed by his nephew.

Renn read the statement inside a council waiting room.

”He called me his nephew.” He said.

Rod looked up. ”You are.”

”His earlier statements called me an alleged relative.”

Korran Ruskell sat opposite them. The older dwarf belonged to a branch Helmar had pushed away from the family’s profitable holdings years earlier. He wore practical armor rather than court clothing and had spent most of the morning identifying seals for the investigators.

”Today it helps him to recognize you.” Korran said. ”Tomorrow he will forget again if that helps more.”

Renn folded the statement. ”Will the council care that he refused?”

”The council gave him every opportunity to answer. Refusal does not prove murder, but a family head cannot demand Ironcloud’s recognition while rejecting its summons.”

The hearing occupied a chamber used for commercial disputes and matters involving several stronghold districts. No ceremonial throne dominated it. Nine councilors sat behind a curved stone table, while clerks and witnesses occupied lower seats. Representatives of recognized families watched from a raised section along one wall.

Rod’s party remained with Renn. Midnight sat beneath Lana’s chair, where no one could accidentally step on him. Ironcloud security brought Serrik through a separate entrance with runed restraints around his wrists.

The assassin looked rested, fed, and deeply unhappy.

The lead investigator began with the attack. Guards described the forged maintenance order, the poisoned attendant, and Serrik’s attempt to reach the protected rooms. Nessa confirmed the attendant survived. Dirk described the pursuit without exaggerating Serrik’s skill or pretending the target had confessed his purpose.

”Did the accused state that he intended to kill Renn Ruskell?” A councilor asked.

”No.” Dirk answered. ”He tried to enter Renn’s rooms carrying poison and concealed weapons. When stopped, he attempted to escape and then kill himself.”

The councilor nodded. The facts required no decoration.

Investigators presented what they recovered from Serrik’s clothing. None connected him to Helmar. Then they introduced the records found in the rented room.

Payment routes crossed four companies before reaching accounts controlled through identities Serrik had used for years. Two of those companies also handled purchases and shipments for Blackwater Reach. Investigators traced the businesses through registration records, account access, and the individuals authorized to move their money. Brogan’s name appeared repeatedly.

The records recovered from Serrik’s room included coded assignments describing Tharic’s movements, the attacks against his caravan, and the requirement that the ring be recovered without damage. Several contract tokens bore private Ruskell authentication marks.

An expert placed enlarged impressions of those marks beside authenticated examples preserved in Ironcloud’s commercial archives. Small defects repeated across them. The scratches were too irregular to be part of the intended design and appeared in impressions made years apart.

”These marks were made with the same physical seal.” The expert said.

Helmar’s representative rose. ”Renn Ruskell had access to family documents. A skilled metalworker could have copied a seal from one of them.”

”A visual copy would reproduce the design.” The expert replied. ”It would not reproduce damage worn into the original seal unless the maker possessed the seal itself and used it to create the mold.”

”Which remains possible.”

”The oldest token recovered from Serrik’s room entered a commercial account before Tharic returned to his ancestral stronghold. Ironcloud recorded its edge pattern and authentication mark when it was deposited. The token presented here matches that record.”

The representative looked toward Renn. ”This council has also received a letter supposedly taken from the Ruskell stronghold.”

”No.” The lead investigator said. ”The council received a reconstruction written from the memories of the adventurers who saw that letter. They have never claimed to possess the original.”

Rod’s expression remained still. The distinction had been included in every statement they submitted.

”The original was lost when our party escaped the stronghold.” He said. ”We recreated what we remembered so Renn would know why Tharic was killed. We did not present the copy as physical evidence.”

”Then it proves nothing.” The representative said.

”By itself, it does not.” The presiding councilor agreed. ”The council will not treat remembered wording as an original document.”

The lead investigator waited for the representative to sit before continuing.

”The reconstruction was not used to authenticate anything recovered from Serrik’s room. Those records were verified through Ironcloud’s commercial archives, the history of the payment tokens, and documents obtained from the companies involved. The reconstruction is relevant only because it recorded details supplied to the council before the contents of Serrik’s room were discovered.”

One of the councilors looked down at the documents before her. ”Including Brogan’s involvement.”

”Yes.” The investigator said. ”The adventurers remembered Brogan’s name appearing in the original letter. That claim was unsupported when they made it. The financial and contract records now independently identify Brogan as the person who communicated with Serrik on Helmar’s behalf.”

Helmar’s representative stood again. ”Or whoever created these records included a name already present in Renn’s accusation.”

”The payment records naming Brogan were held by separate companies and entered into their accounts before Renn came to Ironcloud.” The investigator replied. ”Several were independently recorded by commercial offices during ordinary transactions. Altering all of them would require access to protected archives in multiple districts as well as the cooperation of the clerks who created the original entries.”

The representative had no immediate answer.

The presiding councilor turned toward Serrik.

”Our investigators examined your known residences, financial history, equipment purchases, aliases, and movements. They found no evidence that another assassin or criminal organization participated in the attempt inside Ironcloud. The preparations were made through identities and accounts belonging to you.”

Serrik said nothing. He understood that the Black Cord had likely dealt with Malrec and had hung everything on him, severing any connection to the Black Cord. He was done for, if he didn’t want things to turn worse for his family he had only one option left.

”You obtained the forged maintenance order.” The councilor continued. ”You acquired the poison. You arranged the rented room and accepted the payments. The evidence indicates that Brogan hired you directly on Helmar Ruskell’s behalf.”

Serrik glanced toward Helmar’s representative. The dwarf avoided his eyes.

”You may answer the accusation.” The presiding councilor said.

”I accepted the contract.” Serrik replied.

”Did Brogan provide the target?”

”Yes.”

”Did he tell you Helmar Ruskell authorized the killing?”

”Yes.”

”And the ring?”

”I was ordered to recover it intact.”

The representative objected, but the council allowed the questioning to continue.

”Did anyone assist you in preparing or carrying out the attack inside Ironcloud?” The councilor asked.

”No.”

Serrik’s answer placed the entire operation upon him. Nothing in the records contradicted it. Every account, rented room, purchase, and false identity the investigators had uncovered led back to Serrik.

He confirmed that Brogan supplied Renn’s location and paid far above the normal price for the killing. He also admitted organizing the earlier attacks against Tharic, although the people he employed for those attempts had received only limited instructions and had not known who ultimately funded them.

Serrik offered no information about where he had learned his trade or whether he maintained contacts outside the people named in the contracts. The council did not need that history to rule upon the crimes before it.

The recovered records established that Helmar and Brogan commissioned the murders. Serrik’s testimony established that he accepted the contracts and personally carried out the attempt inside Ironcloud. Nothing presented to the council connected the operation to any larger organization.

Brogan’s name already appeared in the letter recovered by Midnight.

The council questioned Renn next.

He described Tharic’s final request, the ring Midnight protected, and Helmar’s attempt to obtain it.

”What does the ring open?” A councilor asked.

”I do not know.”

”Yet you believe Blackwater Reach is connected to it.”

”Helmar spent years concealing the property. His companies sent specialized equipment there, and he referred to recovering an inheritance obstruction before beginning an operation. A scout confirmed that Helmar moved hundreds of warriors to Blackwater and that slaves are being taken into its lower mine.”

”Did the scout identify what lies beneath it?”

”No.”

Renn’s honesty denied Helmar’s representative an opportunity to expose speculation as falsehood. The council already possessed enough proven crimes.

Korran and two other Ruskell relatives testified about the family leadership. Helmar had removed relatives from positions, redirected family wealth through companies he controlled, and concealed the deaths of people standing between him and the ring. None claimed Renn possessed experience governing the family.

”Then why should he replace Helmar?” The presiding councilor asked.

Korran answered. ”Because inexperience can be corrected. A man who murders his family to protect his authority cannot.”

The hearing ended before sunset. The council withdrew while the chamber remained occupied.

Renn paced once, stopped, and looked at Rod. ”If they recognize me, I inherit a property held by hundreds of Helmar’s soldiers.”

”Recognition will not make them leave.” Rod agreed.

”And if they do not recognize me, Helmar remains family head while wanted for murder.”

Korran folded his arms. ”Those are separate decisions. Do not assume the council must preserve a bad leader because it has not chosen his replacement.”

The council returned an hour later.

Its criminal findings came first. Helmar and Brogan were declared wanted for arranging murders, trafficking slaves, and refusing lawful investigation. Serrik would remain in custody until sentencing for the assassination attempt and his role in the earlier attacks. The presiding councilor then addressed the Ruskell family.

”Helmar Ruskell has refused this council’s authority while relying upon that authority to recognize his titles and property. The evidence establishes repeated attempts to murder possible heirs for private gain. He is removed as the recognized head of the Ruskell family.”

Renn did not celebrate.

The council reviewed the available lines of succession and recognized him as the strongest uncontested claimant. Several relatives could have challenged him. None did.

”Renn Ruskell is recognized as family head.” The councilor said. ”Blackwater Reach and all associated Ruskell holdings pass under his lawful authority.”

Helmar’s representative stood. ”My client occupies Blackwater Reach. This chamber cannot transfer what it does not control.”

”The chamber has determined who owns it. Whether your client obeys is a different matter.”

The council authorized Renn to enter the property, dismiss its officers, reclaim its assets, and release anyone held there unlawfully. Ironcloud would circulate the ruling and recognize adventurers hired to enforce it.

It would not deploy its standing army.

”Blackwater Reach is a private holding beyond the stronghold’s defensive territory.” The councilor explained. ”Ironcloud will defend its laws and borders. It will not begin a military campaign whenever one family member refuses an inheritance ruling.”

Rod understood the political line. The council gave Renn legitimacy without accepting responsibility for the battle required to enforce it.

”If we recover evidence or slaves from the property?” Renn asked.

”Ironcloud will receive them and prosecute crimes supported by that evidence.”

”And soldiers who surrender?”

”A guard is not guilty merely because Helmar paid him. Those who submit to your lawful authority may be released, dismissed, or retained unless evidence connects them to his crimes.”

That answer mattered. Renn did not want to begin his leadership by treating every Ruskell soldier as an enemy who had to die. The majority of soldiers simply followed orders and did not know the whole story.

Outside the chamber, Korran bowed his head to Renn for the first time.

”Family Head.”

Renn looked uncomfortable. ”You did not call Helmar that today.”

”He was no longer worthy of it.”

”And I am?”

”Not yet.” Korran said. ”But you may become worthy, which is already an improvement.”

Rod laughed once. Renn did not, though some of the tension left his face.

They returned to their protected lodging with copies of the ruling. Dirk spread Lucian’s maps across the table. Dain placed the council authorization beside them.

Blackwater Reach still held hundreds of warriors, strengthened wards, airships, and a mine extending beyond every surviving survey. Legal ownership had not weakened a single fortification.

Rod studied the approaches and thought of the adventurers training under his family’s name in the Sanctuary.

”The council gave us the right to remove him.” Lana said.

”Then we need people capable of doing it.” Rod replied.

Renn looked toward Korran. ”How many relatives will stand with me?”

”Enough to prove this is not an outsider stealing the family.” Korran said. ”Not enough to take Blackwater.”

Rod tapped the map.

”I can find the rest.”

Rod did not pretend that his name alone would produce an army ready to obey him. The training camp contained recruits competing for positions in the Titters family guard. Some were close to completing their training, while others still lacked the discipline required for a permanent appointment. Others possessed useful power without the discipline needed for a coordinated assault. Selecting dependable adventurers would require more than posting a generous reward.

That work could begin as soon as they returned to the Sanctuary.

Renn gathered the council papers while Korran collected the statements provided by their relatives. For the first time, the documents named Renn rather than Helmar as the person authorized to speak for the family. The authority felt less like a victory than a weight he had agreed to carry.
