Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The Black Cord learned of Serrik’s capture before Malrec decided which lie to tell.

He arrived at his office shortly after dawn and found a length of black cord stretched across the inside of the door. No knot held it in place. Both ends had been fixed to the frame with narrow steel pins.

Malrec stopped in the corridor.

The signal did not accuse him of anything. It ordered him to leave the office untouched and report to the chamber where the organization examined its own failures. Ignoring it would turn suspicion into certainty.

He descended through Ironcloud alone.

The chamber occupied the rear of a bathhouse that had closed for repairs three years earlier. Steam still moved through its pipes, masking voices from anyone listening through the walls. Malrec entered without weapons because the guards at the concealed door would have taken them anyway.

Three people waited around a stone table. He knew two by the positions they held within the Black Cord, though none had ever given him a personal name. The third was the auditor who had asked about the Deepvein safehouse.

A slate lay before her.

”Serrik was captured inside Ironcloud.” She said.

Malrec sat in the empty chair. ”I heard.”

”There is no registered contract placing him there.”

”Then he must have accepted private work.”

The auditor turned the slate. It listed weapons, poisons, forged papers, and a maintenance schedule recovered during the arrest. ”The poison came from a batch assigned to your section. The identification paper used a seal removed from one of your secured cabinets. The maintenance information was purchased through a broker you have paid six times this year.”

Malrec read without touching it. ”Someone wants the trail to point toward me.”

”Someone succeeded.”

The man seated to the auditor’s right wore a plain iron ring on every finger. ”We are not asking whether Serrik acted alone. We are asking how much of the Black Cord you sold without permission.”

Malrec chose indignation because fear would confirm too much. ”My section handles dozens of contracts. Materials move between operatives. A missing vial does not establish that I authorized an attack.”

”No.” The auditor said. ”The missing vial established that we needed to compare your inventories with Serrik’s unofficial movements.”

She placed a second slate beside the first. Dates ran down one side. Locations occupied the other: the caravan road where Tharic Ruskell had first been attacked, the ancestral stronghold where he died, two relay stations used by Helmar’s companies, and the districts Serrik visited after Renn reached Ironcloud.

The Black Cord did not yet possess Malrec’s private records. It had enough to know records existed.

”Ruskell family killings are not our concern.” Malrec said. ”Unless someone registered a contract.”

”Someone used our people, equipment, and shelters.” The ringed man replied. ”That makes the consequences ours.”

The woman at the head of the table had not spoken. Her gray hair was tied close against her head, and neither age nor ornament softened her face. Malrec knew her only as The Noose.

”Did you authorize Serrik to kill Renn Ruskell?” She asked.

”No.”

”Did you supply the papers that allowed him into the building?”

”No.”

”Did Helmar Ruskell pay you?”

”No.”

The Noose nodded once. ”Then you will not object while we search your office, accounts, safe locations, and residences.”

Malrec had expected an accusation he could deny, not a search he could not prevent.

”My records contain client information unrelated to this matter.”

”The Black Cord’s records contain client information. Anything you concealed from us belongs to no protected client.”

Malrec stood. The guards behind him opened the door before he reached it.

”Sit.” The Noose said.

He considered attacking. The thought survived less than a second. Every person in the chamber had prepared for it and killing one would change nothing about the people already entering his office.

Malrec returned to the chair.

”If Serrik speaks.” He said. ”Ironcloud may learn this organization operates within the city.”

”The Black Cord operates in every major city.” The ringed man said. ”Ironcloud knows that. What its council does not tolerate is an organization conducting unauthorized killings that threaten the stronghold’s order.”

”Serrik acted without approval.”

”As did you.”

The distinction Malrec hoped to use against Serrik had already been turned against him.

For the next hour, the auditor asked about every unregistered movement connected to his section. Malrec admitted minor violations that explained missing supplies without revealing Helmar. He blamed dead operatives where possible and invented private thefts where he could not. No one interrupted him.

The absence of argument frightened him more than disbelief would have.

When the questioning ended, The Noose allowed him to leave.

”You are not cleared to issue contracts.” She said. ”You will remain available until this review concludes.”

Malrec understood the order. The Black Cord wanted to see whom he contacted and where he attempted to hide.

He returned to his rooms instead of his office. Two watchers followed openly enough that he would notice. Others would not.

The metal case beneath his desk remained undiscovered because it was no longer there. Malrec had moved it after meeting Serrik, hiding it inside a disused ventilation chamber reached from a neighboring building. The records were his only protection against Helmar and now his only protection against the Black Cord.

He needed to retrieve them before the organization found the chamber.

Malrec waited until evening, left his rooms to purchase food, and used the market crowd to confirm the visible watchers remained behind him. He made no attempt to escape. Instead, he visited three businesses he regularly used and returned home carrying ordinary purchases.

One stop allowed him to send a warning toward Blackwater Reach.

The message contained no names. It stated that the Ironcloud operation had failed, the operative lived, and the arrangement was compromised. Helmar would understand.

Malrec did not warn Serrik. The assassin had accepted an unauthorized contract while knowing exactly what it was. If Ironcloud executed him, one problem disappeared. If the Black Cord decided to recover him, Serrik could identify Malrec. Neither outcome made loyalty useful.

The Black Cord reached the same conclusion from the opposite direction.

The Noose reviewed the search results after an evening of investigating. Malrec’s office contained discrepancies but no contract bearing Helmar’s mark. Several accounts ended at empty companies. His obvious private safe held enough stolen money to prove corruption and too little to explain the scale of his activity.

”He moved the records.” The auditor said.

”Before or after Serrik failed?” Asked the ringed man.

”Before. The dust beneath his desk shows the concealed compartment was opened recently, but the case stored there had occupied the space for years.”

The Noose examined a list of Malrec’s properties and known routes. ”He expects to bargain with them.”

”With us or Helmar?”

”Whichever frightens him less when the moment comes.”

Killing Malrec immediately would prevent that bargain. It would also leave his hidden records waiting for someone else to discover, and that had a chance of leading back to the Black Cord. Recovering him after he fled might expose additional safe locations. Allowing Ironcloud to connect him publicly to the Black Cord risked the very scrutiny their rules existed to prevent.

The organization needed the authentic evidence in Malrec’s hidden case. It also needed a way for Ironcloud to find that evidence without tracing its source back through the Black Cord’s leadership.

The captured assassin offered the solution.

Serrik had rented rooms, purchased supplies, and created a false identity for his work. Ironcloud security would eventually locate the rooms. Evidence found there would belong naturally to the investigation already underway.

”We place Malrec’s records in Serrik’s hideout.” The ringed man said.

”If we recover the case.” The auditor replied.

”We know he will attempt to reach it.”

The Noose considered the second difficulty. Black Cord members could recover the case, but using them to enter Serrik’s rooms might leave signs recognizable to Ironcloud’s investigators. The organization also needed distance between itself and the evidence.

”The Hidden Ledger.” She said.

The auditor looked toward her. ”They may examine what we give them.”

”They will examine enough to ensure we are not asking them to fabricate evidence. That is acceptable. They need not know who violated our rules or why we chose to burn him.”

The Black Cord and Hidden Ledger were not allies. They occupied different portions of the same concealed world and occasionally purchased services from one another. The Ledger handled information, entry, transport, and theft. More importantly, its survival also depended upon protecting clients without demanding every secret behind a contract.

The Noose gave the order.

***

Malrec made his move the following night.

He left his rooms through a laundry passage while one visible watcher remained near the front entrance. The hidden watcher followed him across two bridges and into the neighboring district. Malrec used a freight lift, crossed through a workshop during shift change, and entered the building beside his office.

He reached the disused ventilation chamber and found the metal case untouched.

That was when the Black Cord closed around him.

The auditor stepped from the passage behind him. Two operatives blocked the route ahead. Malrec held the case against his chest.

”These records buy my departure.” He said.

”Your life is already forfeit.” The auditor replied.

He threw the case through the ventilation opening and attacked.

The fight remained brief. Malrec wounded one operative before a thin blade entered beneath his ribs. He escaped only because he dropped through the same opening as the case and landed on a sloping metal duct. The case struck a lower grate. Malrec continued past it, crashed through a maintenance cover, and disappeared into the active factory below.

The Black Cord recovered the case.

Malrec escaped Ironcloud with a bleeding wound, a handful of coins, and no records left to bargain with.

By morning, The Noose had confirmed the case contained everything required. Helmar’s payment paths appeared beside private Ruskell marks. Instructions referred to Tharic, Renn, and the undamaged recovery of the ring. Serrik’s name appeared on assignments he could not plausibly describe as independent work.

The captured assassin had knowingly broken the Black Cord’s rules. The organization would not rescue him.

Instead, it would make his failure useful.

A Black Cord intermediary carried an offer to one of the Hidden Ledger’s Ironcloud contacts. The job required a skilled infiltrator already inside the city, authentic evidence that must remain intact, and a target location soon to be searched by the authorities.

The Ledger reviewed the conditions and selected Lucian Voss.

His name appeared because the Blackwater Reach contract had established more than his ability to enter a guarded building. He had accepted limited information, completed the assigned work, and returned without drawing attention to either himself or his clients. The new contract required the same discipline. Whoever entered Serrik’s rooms could not improvise, pursue unrelated secrets, or decide that understanding the feud mattered more than placing the evidence correctly.
