Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The first bronze gate did not open for the Five Knots.

Its lever remained visible through the dark glass separating the physical corridor from the spirit passage. Gray mist covered the opening around it. Tessa could see dead visitors moving beyond the barrier, but none carried a quest link to the party and none approached the control.

Belda inspected the gate while Orin examined the wall holding its hinges. Neither found a physical mechanism they could reach. Min tested the air around the mist with a strip of cloth. The cloth stopped as firmly as it would against stone.

Kesh compared the two passages.

Harod’s warning had described a spirit route that appeared to descend before returning above them. The passage behind the glass climbed from their position, but the bronze symbols set into its floor were inverted. From the spirit side, a visitor would read them while traveling down.

”The glass is changing our view of the route.” Kesh said. ”The lever may be closer than it appears.”

Tessa studied the nearest crossing point. A row of covered names ran across both walls, with matching bronze plates positioned at shoulder height.

”Can the plates transfer movement?”

Kesh placed his hand against the physical plate. Its counterpart brightened behind the glass. The spirit lever remained still, but a narrow opening appeared between the routes.

[Matched-name aperture active.]

The opening carried sound and light without allowing a physical object through. Tessa called to the nearest dead visitor, who stopped and approached from the spirit passage.

The visitor listened to their request, then checked his own record.

”The hall will not let me operate a paired lock without joining the quest.” He said. ”My remaining time is nine minutes. I would leave you at the next gate.”

Tessa thanked him and let the opening close. Asking temporary visitors one after another would not produce the reliable cooperation the hall required.

The party searched the physical corridor for another control. Orin found a maintenance channel beneath the first gate. It was too narrow for a person, but a weighted line could pass through. Belda fed rope under the bronze until Kesh saw its end appear inside the distorted reflection of the spirit route.

The rope remained physical. It could not cross the mist surrounding the lever.

Min attached a lamp to the line and moved it beneath the gate. The reflected light struck the covered names from below. Three nameplates brightened, and the spirit lever shifted partway down.

Kesh understood the pattern.

”The lever responds to the plates. It does not care which side provides the light.”

They repositioned the lamp until the correct name remained illuminated. The lever lowered, and the first bronze gate opened.

The solution carried them through two more barriers. Each demanded a different interaction between the routes. One responded to weight placed on a physical plate. Another required them to align bronze names whose reflections appeared in reverse. The Five Knots could force temporary responses from the spirit controls, but every solution took time and exposed equipment to mechanisms never intended to be operated from the living side.

The hall accepted their progress without recognizing a spirit-side keyholder.

[Physical bearers present: Five.]

[Spirit-side keyholder present: None.]

Beyond the third gate, the two routes separated vertically. The physical corridor descended around a square shaft while the spirit passage crossed above it. Dark glass covered the ceiling, allowing the party to see dead visitors walking where living bodies could not reach.

The shaft’s lower exit stood open.

Kesh stopped at the first landing.

”Harod said the misleading split returns above the physical route. We have reached the meeting point.”

Bronze weights hung along the shaft walls. Each connected to a section of the stairs. Tessa sent Belda and Orin down first to inspect the path while Min remained beside the upper control. Kesh tracked the symbols that appeared as weight shifted between the routes.

The defense activated when Orin reached the lower landing.

Names vanished from the bronze plates. The stair sections pulled away from one another, leaving separate platforms around the shaft. Stone figures emerged from recesses beneath the spirit passage. Their bodies occupied the physical route, but their faces remained hidden behind gray mist.

[Unpaired entry detected.]

[Alignment trial active.]

The Five Knots did not try to defeat every figure. Tessa’s first priority was restoring a continuous path before the platforms separated completely. Belda fixed rope between the nearest sections. Orin held the lower mechanism open with a hull brace. Min redirected the lamp to recover one missing alignment symbol.

Kesh found the sequence controlling the stairs.

Each bronze weight corresponded to a nameplate visible only in the spirit passage. Without someone on that side, he had to infer the order from reflections that changed as the platforms moved. He called the sequence to Min while Tessa and Belda kept the stone figures away from Orin’s brace.

The first two stair sections returned.

The third moved in the wrong direction.

Kesh corrected the sequence, but the failed movement released the upper counterweight. A bronze mass dropped through the shaft and tore one platform from the wall. The impact damaged the control holding the remaining sections.

The hall began closing every open route.

Tessa ordered the party toward the lower exit. Belda crossed first using the secured line. Min followed with the lamp case. Orin released the hull brace only after both had reached solid stone, then crossed while Tessa held the nearest defender away from the rope.

Kesh remained at the upper control.

The final stair section required constant alignment. If he released the wheel, the platform carrying Tessa would rotate into the shaft wall before she reached the exit.

”The lower lock can hold the sequence.” Tessa said.

”Only after the platform reaches it.” Kesh replied.

The stone figures closed around the upper landing. Kesh turned the wheel another mark. Tessa’s platform aligned with the lower doorway.

Belda caught Tessa’s line and pulled her across.

Kesh tried to lock the wheel.

The broken counterweight struck the upper mechanism first.

The landing collapsed beneath him.

The Five Knots saw Kesh fall only far enough for the shaft’s darkness to take him. The party record confirmed his death before any impact reached them.

His body did not remain at the bottom of the hall.

[Physical bearer lost.]

[Immediate restoration initiated.]

In Sanctuary, Kesh’s body appeared in the hospital with his clothing and injuries restored. An attendant verified his breathing and found the afterlife notice already active. His eyes remained closed.

[Physical restoration complete.]

[Consciousness retained by current afterlife destination.]

[Maximum return period: Twelve hours.]

Kesh opened his eyes behind the gray mist.

The shaft remained visible through the dark glass, but he now stood in the parallel passage above it. His body had the muted color of every dead visitor in Hades. His equipment had returned as part of the afterlife form, including his maps and navigation tools, but the physical rope and supplies he had carried remained with the living party.

A clock beside his hand began at twelve hours.

[Underworld afterlife form active.]

[Active party quest retained.] ℴ

[Spirit-side keyholder recognized: Kesh.]

[A second death before automatic return will result in permanent loss.]

Kesh read the warning twice. He had no way to know that Max had created the threat to discourage repeated deaths. The Hall of Closed Names offered no protected battlefield and no promise of rebuilding him at its boundary.

He moved away from the stone figures instead of testing whether they could cross the mist.

Below the glass, Tessa reopened the matched-name aperture.

”Kesh?”

”My body is in the hospital. I am on the spirit route.” Kesh said.

No one wasted time asking questions the status already answered.

Kesh reached the lever that had been inaccessible from the physical path. Pulling it locked the stair sections into place and opened the lower door. The remaining four passed through while he followed a separate corridor above them.

The division changed the hall.

Mist barriers no longer stopped Kesh. He crossed through them, read inscriptions visible only from the spirit side, and operated levers the living members could not touch. Physical gates remained solid to him. When the spirit route reached a bronze wall, the others moved weights or turned mechanisms to open his path.

Communication remained limited to matched-name apertures. They appeared at crossings marked by identical symbols, sometimes several rooms apart. Between them, Kesh left instructions by rotating spirit-side nameplates. The living members answered by changing the lamps shining through the glass.

Their airship discipline gave the method structure. Tessa controlled the pace from the physical route. Kesh marked direction and timing. Belda managed lines and moving loads. Min kept the signaling lamps positioned, while Orin used his tools and new shoulder brace to hold mechanisms in place.

They reached the seal chamber with nine hours remaining on Kesh’s clock.

The passage seal occupied the center of a circular bronze frame. It resembled a thick stone disk crossed by a dark metal bar. Kesh could see its housing from the spirit gallery but could not touch any part of it.

The living members released four physical clamps and lowered the disk onto a carrying frame. Even with the frame, its weight required all four of them. Orin’s brace supported his shoulder without repairing it, forcing Belda to take more of one side.

[Passage seal removed by living bearers.]

[Return the seal to the River Office.]

The chamber’s exit did not lead back along the route they had entered. A final bronze gate blocked the physical passage. Three spirit locks stood beyond separate mist barriers around Kesh’s gallery.

He opened the first.

The second required the living members to position the seal beneath a matching name before its control appeared. They moved the carrying frame across the chamber while Kesh watched symbols form beneath it.

The third lock remained dark.

Kesh followed the spirit gallery until a wall separated him from the next control. The only opening lay behind a moving ward patrolled by two mist-covered figures. He could not fight them without risking the death every adventurer believed would be final.

The living party found a weight plate that slowed the ward but did not stop it. Holding the plate forced them to set down one corner of the seal and brace the carrying frame against the floor.

Kesh timed the patrol, crossed the first opening, and waited inside a covered name alcove while the figures passed. Tessa released the plate long enough to move the seal forward. Kesh used the next pause to reach the final lever.

The third lock opened.

The physical gate lifted only halfway.

[Final counterweight incomplete.]

[Spirit-side sequence required beyond the next division.]

The seal would fit beneath the raised gate, but the four living members would have to crawl while supporting its weight. Kesh’s route continued behind two more mist barriers.

His clock showed six hours and twelve minutes.

The Five Knots had the passage seal.

They remained one locked gate short of carrying it out of the hall.
