Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The return crossing carried fewer passengers and attracted the same predators.

Four living heartbeats entered the Styx. Pale shapes gathered beneath the boat before the far landing disappeared, but the Five Knots no longer needed to discover what drew them.

Orin’s shoulder remained wrapped, and the damaged brace could not conceal every trace of blood. Min replaced the outer pad before they boarded. Belda secured the remaining rope through the bench rings, while Tessa assigned the same counterweight positions that had kept them aboard during the first crossing.

They did not defeat the creatures. The party kept its weight centered, denied hooked limbs a secure grip, and protected Orin until the ferryman’s posts appeared ahead. The pale shapes stopped beyond the landing boundary.

The four climbed out of the boat in their physical bodies.

No quest-completion portal waited for them.

They followed the black river back to the Gravewater Descent and began climbing through the route they had entered. The blocked shelves, wet ledges, and narrow passages remained physical obstacles. Belda recovered the strongest lines wherever doing so did not require another dangerous crossing. Min rationed the lamps. Tessa shortened the rest intervals because their supplies had been planned for an expedition, not an extended stay in the Underworld.

Orin could still use his good arm, but he no longer carried part of every load. The others redistributed equipment rather than allowing his damaged support to turn a survivable climb into another death.

They emerged beneath the known ruin more than a day after entering.

The adventurers camped above the cavern had changed. Two of the original witnesses remained, joined by another party and three residents from the nearest settlement. Everyone had seen the stone arch open for the Five Knots and close behind them. No one had managed to recreate the five passage marks.

Tessa confirmed only that the four needed to reach their airship and return to Sanctuary. She did not answer questions at the edge of the cavern.

The Sixth Knot remained secured on the western shelf. Its locks were intact, and the engine components Min had removed still rested inside the reinforced compartment. Belda and Orin inspected the anchors while Tessa sent a brief message confirming that the expedition had returned with one member already in Sanctuary.

The airship lifted before the gathering at the ruin could become a larger crowd.

Kesh left the hospital after his restored body had awakened fully and the attendants completed their checks. No wound remained from the collapse. His equipment had returned with him, and the coin recorded in Hades now existed as a dark disk in his possession.

He waited near the berth used by The Sixth Knot.

The airship arrived with torn rope, missing supplies, and four exhausted crew members. Tessa brought it down cleanly. Kesh remained outside the landing area until the anchors held.

The reunion required no speech.

Belda checked that Kesh stood in a physical body. Min compared the completed party record with his own. Orin handed Kesh the navigation case that had remained with the living group after the death.

”The hospital restored you when the shaft collapsed?” Tessa asked.

”Immediately. My body remained asleep while I was on the spirit route.” Kesh said. ”The coin and every quest reward followed me when the clock ended.”

The five records matched.

[The Hall of Closed Names: Complete.]

[Restricted Hades services unlocked.]

[The Road Beneath Still Water: Next stage sealed.]

Their first priority was rest, repairs, and a private account of the expedition. The witnesses at the ruin made secrecy impossible, but public knowledge did not require the Five Knots to answer every question individually.

They prepared one statement and posted it through the Hall of Achievements and the same adventurer boards that carried verified route information.

The account confirmed that a living party could enter the Gravewater Descent after earning the required passage marks. The route reached the Underworld and no other afterlife. The ferryman demanded payment connected to the dead, a meaningful secret spoken publicly during passage, or a valued possession surrendered permanently. Ordinary dungeon coins did not buy a crossing.

The Five Knots described the return problem clearly. A living person who crossed remained physically alive and had to earn or provide another fare to come back. Quest completion did not extract the party. Four members had crossed the river twice and then climbed out through Corathen.

Kesh added the result of dying inside the Underworld. His physical body had been restored in Sanctuary’s hospital instead of a Corathen graveyard. His consciousness remained temporarily in Hades because the active quest recognized him as a participant. Another death during the twelve-hour period would be permanent, so no one should treat death as a convenient method for crossing spirit barriers.

The statement did not include the detailed lock sequence inside the Hall of Closed Names. It did not identify the sealed next objective or list the restricted goods. The Five Knots had earned those discoveries and had no obligation to turn their account into a guide for strangers.

Questions gathered anyway.

Some adventurers wanted to know whether the Gravewater Descent provided a route to Valhalla. Others asked whether following the Five Knots through the ruin would cause the same arch to open. Several proposed collecting ordinary coins in advance despite the payment rule appearing plainly in the statement.

Guilds approached the discovery more carefully. They began comparing old Corathen surveys with afterlife accounts brought back by their own members. A party could prepare for the Gravewater Descent, but no amount of equipment replaced the five earned marks that had opened the arch for the Five Knots.

The hospital also changed its intake questions. Attendants did not ask returning adventurers to reveal private afterlife experiences. They recorded only whether a person had entered a known destination, whether consciousness had returned normally, and whether a living route had been witnessed. The information helped identify future cases without turning recovering patients into public exhibits.

Kesh declined requests to demonstrate his funerary coin. It had been delivered as an earned reward and might be needed later. The Five Knots displayed the completed quest record once through the Hall of Achievements, then closed the record to direct inspection.

The witnesses resolved the easiest dispute. They had seen five separate passage marks complete the arch. Parties that copied the arrangement without earning the marks received no response.

Searches spread through Corathen.

Adventurers examined battlefields for signs of Valhalla, libraries for hidden routes matching the Endless Library, and coastal ruins for the Sea of Lanterns. The Underworld discovery proved that living entrances existed. It did not provide a coordinate, symbol, or method that applied to any other destination.

No public system announcement declared the route cleared. Knowledge spread through the witnesses, the Five Knots’ verified rewards, and the party’s controlled account.

Max reviewed the expedition in the core room with Anna and Quin.

The route record separated every phase. The five afterlife objectives had produced individual qualifications. The Gravewater Descent tested those qualifications before admitting the living party. The ferryman enforced a price in both directions. Hades recognized the difference between physical intruders and temporary visitors, and the Hall of Closed Names required cooperation without allowing either state to replace the other.

Quin examined Kesh’s death record.

”The destination overrode the Level Five graveyard because he had already left Corathen.”

”The entrance begins in Corathen. The realm beyond it is not part of Level Five.” Max said.

Anna opened the hospital timing. Kesh’s body had been restored before his afterlife form appeared on the spirit route. The transfer preserved the quest link without leaving a corpse inside the hall.

”The warning kept him from testing the defenders.” Anna said.

The warning worked because adventurers believed another death before the clock expired would be permanent. Nothing in the Five Knots’ account challenged that belief.

Max marked two explanations for later entrants to receive more clearly. Living travelers needed to understand that a completed quest would not bring them home, and dead participants needed confirmation that earned rewards would survive automatic return. Both rules had functioned, but the River Office should not rely on a party asking the correct questions.

He left the difficulty of the Hall unchanged. The Five Knots had found a valid path, paid for mistakes, and completed the objective without the route becoming impossible.

Elsewhere in the dungeon, Nethren reviewed the first permanent cavern planned for his basic territory.

Income from the joint instance had replaced part of the reserve spent on the Crowncap Guard. The creature already occupied a temporary chamber, learning Nethren’s signals and the behavior of his lesser fungal guards. Eternal-soul protection prevented permanent loss, but it did not provide the completed level the creature would eventually defend.

Nethren shaped the cavern plan around growth rather than a finished boss room. Moisture channels would feed fungal beds. Three passages would give adventurers fair routes toward the center. Lesser guards could withdraw toward Crowncap positions without allowing the future defender to close every route at once.

Hizon checked the plan for the same requirement he had enforced during the purchase.

”Every arrangement shown here leaves a traversable route.” Hizon said.

”The Crowncap Guard will change which route is safest. It will not remove all three.” Nethren replied.

Construction had not begun. The available income could establish the first cavern or the supporting fungal growths, not both at full size. Nethren chose the cavern shell and a limited growth bed, leaving the rest in planning until the joint instance earned more.

The decision advanced his territory without pretending one successful purchase had rebuilt Fungal Hollow.

The Wayfarers’ Fellowship grew by a smaller measure.

Tarin’s account filled several evening meetings, and Garrick’s completed relic task opened formation lessons in the Steady Hearth. The public rooms gained more food, more applicants, and a longer list of people beginning the five services required before invitation into the hidden fellowship.

Malerc and Kharveck approved only a few new invitations. Five returned tokens established a minimum. Continued service, discretion, and sincere participation determined whether a member qualified for more.

The Hall of Discipline remained concealed from the public. So did the remote living entrance in Corathen and the identities of the realm’s custodians.

In the core room, the Underworld route remained open.

Max compared its record with the twenty-four other afterlives. A living entrance could be difficult, conditional, and dangerous while remaining real. The expedition also proved that any realm capable of receiving the living could eventually be reached by someone determined enough to satisfy its conditions.

That mattered if an afterlife ever held his core.

Max closed the placement options without selecting one.
