Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Malrec disliked receiving messages from Helmar Ruskell.

The dwarf never used the Black Cord’s proper channels, because using them would have created a record that someone above Malrec could examine. Instead, his messages arrived through merchants who did not know what they carried, sealed inside containers that appeared ordinary until the correct pressure was applied to the metal rim. The latest had reached Malrec inside a shipment of lamp oil. He had paid for the entire shipment, dismissed the carter, and opened the hidden compartment alone.

Three lines had been engraved into a thin plate of blackened copper.

Renn remains in Ironcloud. The ring remained with him. Helmar wanted both problems removed.

Malrec held the plate over a candle until the metal softened and the words distorted. He then dropped it into a crucible and watched it melt. Destroying the message did nothing about the demand it contained.

For years, Helmar’s work had been profitable. His targets lived far from Ironcloud, his payments crossed several companies before reaching Malrec, and most of the Black Cord’s killers never knew they were serving the same client. A caravan ambush here and a disappearance there attracted little attention. Dwarven families had been killing their own relatives since before anyone began carving laws into stone.

The problem was not that Helmar wanted another death. The problem was where he wanted it.

No Black Cord contract had targeted anyone inside Ironcloud on Helmar’s behalf. Their earlier arrangements had taken place on remote roads, at isolated holdings, or in settlements where a hired blade could disappear before local officials decided which authority possessed jurisdiction. Ironcloud was different. Its security forces cooperated across districts, its wards recorded movements through protected buildings, and its council had enough influence to make every dwarven city hostile to the organization. Merchants, officials, and airship crews passed through the stronghold every day. A public failure would carry the Black Cord’s reputation far beyond the city before its leaders could contain the damage.

More importantly, Malrec had no authority to approve such a contract.

He left his rented office through the rear door, crossed three crowded streets, and entered a public lift descending through the mountain. Two changes of direction and a second lift brought him to a private drinking room whose proprietor collected money without remembering faces. Helmar’s representative was already waiting.

Brogan wore no Ruskell colors. He did not need them. Malrec had dealt with him often enough to recognize the broad shoulders, carefully trimmed beard, and habit of sitting where he could watch both exits.

”You received the instruction.” Brogan said.

”I received a request your master should not have made.”

Brogan’s expression remained still. ”Lord Helmar does not make requests.”

”Then he should issue his orders to people he owns.”

Malrec sat opposite him and placed both hands on the table. No drinks had been ordered. The room’s privacy was useful, but neither man intended to remain long enough to enjoy it.

”The Black Cord has rules concerning Ironcloud.” Malrec continued. ”An operation inside the stronghold requires senior approval. Helmar has never asked us to cross that boundary before, and I will not pretend the location makes no difference.”

”Renn is protected because he reached Ironcloud. If that protection prevents action, he has already won.”

”He has not won. He has become difficult to reach. Those are not the same thing.”

Brogan leaned forward. ”He possesses the key. Every day he remains alive gives him another opportunity to understand it, sell it, or place it somewhere beyond recovery.”

Malrec knew only that the ring mattered. Helmar had never explained what it opened, and Malrec had never needed the answer while the payments continued. The urgency now suggested that whatever waited behind the lock was worth more than any fee the dwarf had paid him.

”Then offer enough for senior approval,” Malrec said.

”And tell your leaders that you arranged the earlier contracts without them?”

The words settled between them.

Helmar knew exactly how much leverage he possessed. Malrec had registered some of the earlier killings under false clients. Others had never entered the Black Cord’s books at all. He had used safe rooms, weapons, and trained assassins belonging to the organization, then divided Helmar’s payments between the people involved. The arrangement had enriched him for years.

It had also begun to fray.

Two days earlier, an auditor had asked why a safehouse outside Deepvein had required three changes of locks despite having no registered occupants. Another wanted an inventory of poisons transferred through Malrec’s section. Neither question proved anything, but the last thing he wanted was the senior management asking questions about how he did things.

”The audit is becoming a problem.” Malrec said.

”Your problem.” Brogan replied.

”It becomes Helmar’s problem when the people examining my records find his money.”

Brogan considered that without visible alarm. ”Complete this contract and you will have enough to leave Ironcloud before they finish looking.”

”You think the Black Cord allows its managers to retire with stolen money?”

”I think a man with sufficient wealth can find somewhere the Black Cord does not control.”

Malrec almost laughed. Helmar understood mines, family grudges, and the purchase of frightened men. He did not understand an organization whose survival depended upon making examples of members who endangered everyone else.

Unfortunately, refusing the contract would not undo what Malrec had already done. If Renn lived, Helmar might decide that preserving Malrec no longer served him. If the audit continued, the Black Cord would eventually discover the missing contracts. Malrec needed money, time, and a reason for Helmar to remain invested in his survival.

”No attack on Rod Titters.” Malrec said. ”No attack on the other adventurers unless they prevent withdrawal. The target is Renn. The ring must be taken intact.”

”Those are Helmar’s instructions.”

”They are now mine. The distinction matters to the person entering Ironcloud.”

Brogan slid a payment token across the table. The amount encoded into its edge was enough to purchase a fortified house in several smaller cities. It was not enough to survive failure.

Malrec covered the token with his palm.

”This will be the first operation we have conducted for Helmar inside Ironcloud.” He said. ”Your master will not confuse it with the work performed elsewhere. If he changes the target or sends his own people into the operation, I withdraw everyone under my control.”

”He wants the ring, not disorder.”

”Helmar has left a great deal of disorder behind him.”

Brogan rose. ”Then make certain none of it points toward you.”

After he left, Malrec remained in the private room and examined the payment token. Helmar believed wealth could solve the problem because wealth had solved every earlier problem placed before him. The arrogance would have been easier to resent if Malrec had not relied upon the same assumption.

He returned to his office by a different route.

The Black Cord maintained killers for different kinds of work. Some excelled at making public examples. Others made deaths resemble accidents or ordinary crime. Ironcloud required someone capable of entering a protected building, identifying the correct room, and leaving before the stronghold understood a murder had occurred.

The obvious candidates were unavailable because Malrec could not assign them without creating records the audit would see. That left the assassins already entangled in his private contracts.

Serrik arrived shortly before midnight.

He was a lean dwarven man with cropped hair and hands that never rested near his weapons unless he intended to use them. Nothing about his clothing marked him as wealthy, dangerous, or unusual. He had worked two of Helmar’s earlier contracts and understood that neither appeared in the Black Cord’s official records.

Malrec placed a sketch of Renn on the desk.

”The target is inside Ironcloud.” He said.

Serrik did not touch the sketch. ”Approved?”

”Paid.”

”That was not my question.”

”You accepted unregistered work before.”

”Outside the stronghold.”

Malrec slid the payment token into view. ”Your share is five times the earlier rate.”

Serrik examined the encoded amount. Greed did not transform his expression, but it held his attention.

”Who protects him?”

”A five-person adventuring party led by a young Axe Master named Rod Titters. They know Helmar has targeted Renn, but they have no reason to expect an attempt here.”

”Everyone has a reason to expect an attempt when someone wants them dead.”

Malrec ignored the correction. ”The building uses outside guards and service workers. You will receive the identity of a maintenance contractor scheduled to inspect its heating lines. The real contractor will be delayed before reaching the district.”

”Wards?”

”The papers will pass the public checks. Anything inside the protected rooms is your problem.”

Serrik finally picked up the sketch. ”The ring?”

”Recovered intact. You will recognize it from the second drawing. Killing Renn without returning the ring counts as failure. Engaging Titters or his companions without need also counts as failure.”

”And if I am captured?”

Malrec met his eyes. ”You know what work you accepted.”

Serrik gave a quiet grunt. He had not expected reassurance. The Black Cord protected members who followed its rules because doing so protected the organization. An assassin conducting an unregistered murder inside Ironcloud could claim none of that protection.

He studied the building plan, the service schedule, and what Malrec knew about the guards. He asked precise questions and received precise answers where Malrec possessed them. Neither man discussed Helmar’s reasons for wanting the ring.

”I need two days.” Serrik said.

”You have three. After that, the maintenance contractor returns to his normal schedule and Renn may change locations.”

Serrik folded the drawings and placed them inside his coat. ”If the papers fail, I leave.”

”If the papers fail, you were never working for me.”

The assassin paused at the door. ”If the papers fail, that may become the first thing I tell Ironcloud.”

Malrec waited until the door closed before allowing his anger to show.

Serrik understood the danger well enough to threaten him, yet had accepted the payment anyway. That made him useful and dangerous in equal measure. Once Renn was dead and the ring was delivered, Malrec would have to decide whether Serrik remained a liability.

First, the assassin had to succeed.

Malrec opened a hidden compartment beneath his desk and removed the records connected to Helmar’s work. Payment routes, coded authorizations, and private contract tokens filled a narrow metal case. Destroying them would protect him from part of the audit, but they were also the only leverage he possessed against Helmar.

He locked the case again.

Across Ironcloud, Serrik entered a rented room under a false name and began watching the building where Renn slept. No Black Cord mark accompanied him. No authorized contract protected him. If he succeeded, Helmar would receive his key and Malrec would purchase time.

If he failed, everyone involved would deny that the operation had ever existed.
