5: Chapter 5 The Strange Great LakeAfter confirming the direction of the great lake, Lin Sheng climbed down from the tree and crawled toward that direction without stopping.

If he encountered small trees that could be devoured along the way, Lin Sheng wouldn’t let them go to waste.

Just like that, by the time Lin Sheng reached the vicinity of the great lake, a barren path had already appeared behind him.

Lying near the lake water, Lin Sheng didn’t rush over immediately.

Given his cautious nature, he still needed to observe the situation by the lakeshore before he would feel safe enough to approach.

Under normal circumstances, a great lake is usually a place where nearby creatures come to drink.

Among these creatures, there would inevitably be fierce predators.

After all, no matter what kind of creature it is, water is necessary to maintain vital signs.

Lin Sheng climbed a nearby giant tree and lay on its branches, quietly observing the situation by the lake.

When he was thirsty, he held it in; when he was hungry, he took a few bites of the giant tree’s branches.

Just like that, an afternoon passed.

Throughout the entire afternoon, Lin Sheng didn’t see a single creature.

Aside from the schools of fish wandering in the lake, the surroundings of the entire great lake were deathly silent; not even a single creature came to drink.

This struck Lin Sheng as very strange.

”Could it be that there’s some great horror within this lake?”

Lin Sheng pondered to himself.

But this hypothesis didn’t seem very reliable.

If there really were some top-tier predator in the lake, it would be impossible for so many fish to exist there.

They should have been eaten clean by the predator long ago.

With this thought in mind, Lin Sheng decided to observe for one more night and go down to investigate the next day.

If there were no top-tier predators in the lake, he would hit the jackpot.

Even if there really was a top-tier predator in the lake, with his size of less than three meters, the predator probably wouldn’t even bother with him.

...

Just like that, time slowly passed as Lin Sheng observed.

Soon, the sun rose again, and the dawn of the second day arrived.

Lin Sheng didn’t act immediately.

He waited until the sunlight illuminated the entire great lake before slowly floating down from the tree.

Crawling on the ground, he slowly approached the edge of the great lake.

The three pairs of transparent wings on his back fluttered slightly; if anything felt wrong, Lin Sheng could fly away instantly.

One step

Two steps

...

Even after reaching the lakeshore, no abnormalities occurred.

But even so, Lin Sheng did not let down his guard.

Lying by the lake, he lowered his head; although the smell of the lake water was a bit strange, he still carefully took a sip.

”Pfft!”

As soon as the lake water entered his mouth, Lin Sheng spat it right out.

Not only that, after spitting out the water, he kept shoveling dirt into his mouth.

With that one sip, Lin Sheng finally understood why not a single creature could be seen by the lake.

He had thought this was just an ordinary freshwater lake, but as it turned out, this was clearly an ”Acid Lake.”

Although Lin Sheng knew that not all corrosive liquids were acids, that slightly sour and astringent taste just now confirmed that this lake water was undoubtedly acid.

Moreover, the corrosiveness of this acid was extremely powerful; Lin Sheng conservatively estimated that its corrosiveness was no less than that of ”aqua regia.”

His already ulcerating mouth was the best proof.

”System, can I use evolution points to repair the damage to my mouth?”

Because the pain was truly unbearable, Lin Sheng couldn’t help but start exploring new uses for evolution points.

[Yes]

The system’s brief reply made Lin Sheng feel relieved.

”Quick, repair it!”

[Consuming 100 evolution points, repairing in progress...]

As soon as the system’s voice finished in his ear, Lin Sheng felt a wave of coolness in his mouth.

Soon, the sensation of having a mouth full of ulcers vanished.

Lin Sheng stopped eating soil and looked at the Acid Lake, lingering fear still in his eyes.

Fortunately, he was cautious; upon reaching the lake, he didn’t jump in immediately but tried it with his mouth first.

Otherwise, it wouldn’t have just been his mouth that got corroded.

Most likely, his entire body would have been completely corroded away.

Lin Sheng glanced at the Acid Lake and the schools of fish wandering within it as if mocking him, and he secretly set a goal in his heart.

”Just you wait, one day, I will drink you dry.”

Although this resource point, the Acid Lake, was temporarily unusable, making a home nearby was still a good choice.

At least there were no predators around here, so Lin Sheng didn’t have to worry about safety.

With this idea, Lin Sheng quickly became busy.

Due to the humid climate of the rainforest, Lin Sheng planned to set up his home directly in a tree.

Making a home in a tree could prevent sneak attacks from those campers on the ground and provide a wide field of vision.

Killing two birds with one stone.

After circling the area, Lin Sheng chose a giant tree he was satisfied with.

Although this tree wasn’t the tallest, it had the densest branch in the surrounding forest.

After selecting the spot, Lin Sheng began to build.

It wasn’t really building; he just cleared the nearby branches to ensure he could find this specific branch when he returned.

After all, if Lin Sheng were asked to build a house for himself now, he certainly wouldn’t be able to do it.

”Finished.”

Looking at the thick branch, Lin Sheng nodded with satisfaction.

This would be his home from now on.

...

The reason a rainforest is called a rainforest is that it rains frequently.

Moreover, the rainfall is terrifyingly high.

Not long after Lin Sheng finished building his home, he was dazed by the sudden heavy rain.

Although he liked rainy days, he didn’t like getting soaked.

Especially in such heavy rain.

The heavy rain made Lin Sheng feel a bit uncomfortable.

Looking at the fish in the distant Acid Lake, an idea suddenly occurred to him.

Since those fish could survive in the Acid Lake, their surfaces must be full of acid.

But if that acid were washed away by the rain, wouldn’t they become edible?

Lin Sheng decided to give it a try.

Although the fish lived in the acid and Lin Sheng couldn’t go down to catch them directly.

But the biggest difference between humans and animals is having a brain and knowing how to use tools.

Soon, Lin Sheng found a straight branch about four meters long with a hooked fork.

Fluttering his wings, he carried the branch with his two front claws to the lakeshore.

Looking at the dim-witted fish in the lake, Lin Sheng threw the branch with force.

”Swish!”

A sound effect of whistling through the air, voiced by Lin Sheng himself, rang out from his lizard-like mouth, and the branch landed straight on the lakeshore.

Lin Sheng, in the air, felt a bit embarrassed.

He flew over to pick up the branch, thinking it must be a matter of the quantity of fish.

If there had been more fish gathered together just now, it would have been impossible for him to miss.

Suddenly, a flash of inspiration struck Lin Sheng.

In his past life, he had watched some wilderness survival shows, where one of his favorite bloggers used a commonly available prop for baiting; he decided to try it as well.
