When She Stops Being Dramatic

Chapter 335: Chapter 126: The Green Tea Female Supporting Character in a Chronicle Novel (13)

”You know how gossip works. Two words can get stretched into a full-blown drama.”

Chi Yun’er was amused. ”So, even though that family spread the lie that you were dating their daughter, that same ’female comrade’ also got a reputation for being a snob?”

”Yes,” Jiang Yihua nodded. ”They were suffering in silence, unable to complain—they really shot themselves in the foot. Did they think they could take advantage of me so easily?”

Chi Yun’er pursed her lips, smiling faintly as she walked on.

For a moment, they fell silent.

Seeing they were almost at Bian Family Village, Jiang Yihua spoke up. ”Chi, even if your job gets finalized in the next day or two, I suggest you contact your family right away and arrange to be transferred back.”

”You came to the countryside with Zishu, but now he’s marrying someone else. You have no reason to stay.”

”The countryside is still a bit chaotic, and I can’t possibly watch over you at all times. If anything were to happen to you, forget about Uncle Chi and Aunt Chi holding me accountable—I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself.”

”Chi, you’re a good girl. Don’t act out of spite and end up with lifelong regrets!”

Chi Yun’er nodded obediently. ”I know, Brother Hua. I actually mentioned this in the letter I asked you to take home for me.”

”I’m sure my parents have had a job lined up for me this whole time, just waiting for me to change my mind.”

Jiang Yihua smiled. ”That’s good. I wonder if we’ll have a chance to see each other again after you return to the Capital City.”

Chi Yun’er tilted her head and looked at him. ”This isn’t ancient times. Travel is very convenient now. If someone really wants to, even the distance to the ends of the earth isn’t a problem!”

”Right, you’re right,” Jiang Yihua said, clenching his fists. He stopped and handed her the bamboo basket. ”I still have to get back to work, so I won’t walk you into the courtyard.”

Chi Yun’er took the basket. It was long and slender, with a partition woven from bamboo strips in the middle, making it a small and elegant two-tiered lunchbox. Because of this, the handle on top was smaller and shorter than usual, and as they passed it between them, their hands were bound to touch.

A jolt went through them, and they both let go at the same time. Startled, they both lurched forward to grab the basket.

But the mischievous little basket was too heavy. Before they could catch it, it tumbled to the ground. Jiang Yihua and Chi Yun’er, however, ended up grabbing each other’s hands.

One hand was large and broad, warm and filled with an endless sense of security, as if it could hold up the sky and keep a person safe for a lifetime.

The large hand enveloped a small one that was slender and smooth, with a slight plumpness that was addictive to the touch.

Jiang Yihua was still reveling in the wonderful sensation of those two seconds when a familiar, unbearable feeling shot up from his hand and through his entire body!

He lowered his gaze. The back of his hand was already covered in tiny goosebumps.

Jiang Yihua naturally pulled his hand back, bent down to pick up the basket, dusted it off, and handed it over.

This time, they were both very careful, and the handoff was completed smoothly.

”I’ll come pick you up at seven tomorrow,” he said with a soft smile, motioning for her to head back.

Chi Yun’er nodded, turned, and left with the basket in her arms. After a few steps, she smiled and waved at him before jogging back to the courtyard.

Just as she stepped over the threshold, she looked up and saw the two of them in the courtyard, sitting so close they were almost touching.

When he saw her return, Jiang Zishi subconsciously took a step to the side. Then, he put on a stern face and said to Chi Yun’er, ”Where have you been? It’s the middle of the day.”

”When are you going to change this bad habit of running off whenever you get angry?”

”It’s a good thing everyone in the village knows you. Once you go to the brick factory, won’t it be easy for something to happen?”

Chi Yun’er hugged the basket tighter, quietly watching the hypocritical pair. One had framed her for attempted murder for a man’s sake, and the other was willing to push her into a wolf’s den just to secure a spot at the Industrial and Agricultural University.

’A quick death is a mercy, but they’re both trying to slowly saw at my neck with dull blades!’

’Why should they get to live happily ever after together, without a shred of guilt?’

’Meanwhile, I have to live in constant fear for my life, mulling over every single word I say.’

’It was like seeing her past life, when these two returned to the village in fine clothes, deliberately provoking her, afraid she hadn’t gone completely insane yet.’

Chi Yun’er lowered her gaze, her eyes turning cold again. ’Heaven was watching and let me be reborn.’

’They love to climb the social ladder, don’t they?’

’Then I’ll let them have a taste of what it’s like to fall from a great height!’

In that instant, she made several decisions. Feigning anger, she let out a cold laugh and went back to her room, clutching the basket.

Jiang Zishi shook his head with a helpless sigh and whispered to Bian Yumin beside him, ”Yumin, you should head back first. I’ll have a good talk with Chi Yun’er and get her sent off to the brick factory as soon as possible.”

”Once she’s gone, a small room will free up at the sent-down youth station. I’ll clean it up every day, get a few things, and as soon as the double-rush harvest is over, we’ll get our marriage certificate!”

The awkwardness on Bian Yumin’s face faded, replaced by a shy smile as she nodded.

”I’ll listen to you. Even though things are a bit tough right now, I believe that since we’re able-bodied, if we work hard to build our life together, it will definitely be a prosperous one!”

Jiang Zishi had a great deal of pride and didn’t want people to say he was a live-in son-in-law, so he insisted they live at the sent-down youth station after getting married.

In his eyes, having a private room, whether in the city or at the youth station, was already quite good. But to Bian Yumin, who was doted on by the village chief’s family, it was considered a hardship.

He concealed his displeasure, squeezed her hand, and changed the subject, his voice growing husky.

”Minmin, you’re always around me... I can’t wait another day. I wish... I wish I could just ravish you right now...”

Bian Yumin stomped her foot shyly. ”Zishu, what are you saying? You’re so naughty! I... I’m not talking to you anymore!” With that, she covered her face and ran off.

The moment she was gone, not a trace of deep and abiding love remained on Jiang Zishi’s face.

He walked to Chi Yun’er’s door and cleared his throat. ”Chi Yun’er, I’m coming in.”

He pushed the door open and walked in. Seeing her with her head down, arranging wild duck eggs in a jar, he frowned slightly. ”Who gave you these?”

Chi Yun’er propped her chin on her hand, her cheeks slightly puffed. ”Brother Hua, of course.”

When the basket fell earlier, several of the wild duck eggs packed in the small jar had broken. She was picking them out one by one, planning to cook the broken ones for dinner.

”My brother?” Jiang Zishi was taken aback. ”Isn’t the farm busy? He came all this way just to bring you wild duck eggs? And he didn’t even come to see me!”

A smile played on Chi Yun’er’s lips, and the air itself seemed to fill with a sweet-and-sour scent. ”Mhm. Brother Hua said it’ll be inconvenient for him to look after me once you’re married, so he told me to go to him if I need anything.”

”I didn’t know you weren’t out in the fields, Zishu. Otherwise, I would have invited him into the courtyard.”

Jiang Zishi stared intently at her pretty face.

He enjoyed being the cause of her every joy and sorrow, but now someone else was pulling at her emotions.

The realization ignited a vicious fire within him. He strode over to her, grabbed her by the wrist, and yanked her into his arms. ”Chi Yun’er, I’m getting married. You don’t seem very sad about it.”

Chi Yun’er pressed her hands against his chest, a mixture of anger and fear churning inside her.

She knew all too well the baser nature of men.

’He can be the one to discard you, but you absolutely cannot show any eagerness to leave him!’

”Zishu, don’t do this. You’re scaring me,” she said timidly in a small voice.

”Scared? Hah,” Jiang Zishi scoffed. ”Don’t you like me? Didn’t you like me enough to follow me to the countryside? You want to marry me and be my wife, don’t you?”

”Chi Yun’er,” his breathing began to grow heavy, and his hand started to wander down from her waist. ”This isn’t ancient times. People have freedom in love; it’s all about liberating your mind.”

”A lot of women have already lost their ’first time’ to a bicycle seat. Besides, what won’t a woman do to get back to the city? But after they go back, don’t they still find jobs, marry men of equal social standing, and live happily?”

”Yun’er, don’t be so old-fashioned. Even though I can’t marry you right now, I can still let you experience what it’s like to be a woman...”

Chi Yun’er abruptly thrust the scissors hidden in her sleeve, stabbing them viciously toward his restless hand.
