When She Stops Being Dramatic

Chapter 303: Chapter 116: The Green Tea Female Supporting Character in a Period Novel (3)

Jiang Zishu rushed forward to cover her mouth, but Chi Yun’er instinctively dodged him.

He didn’t think much of it, though. ’Who would have guessed? The girl chased him so relentlessly in public, yet in private, she was such a little prude she wouldn’t even let him lay a finger on her!’

’Having such a charming, beautiful woman parading in front of him every day was driving him crazy with desire. Yet he had to maintain his ”big brother” persona, when really, he wanted to devour her whole every second of the day.’

’Unfortunately, that stupid woman, Chi Yun’er, had no idea what he truly wanted.’

The thought of it made Jiang Zishu sick to his stomach!

He had made a ruthless decision back then, signing himself up for the post with the worst conditions among all the sent-down youth. Then, he had nonchalantly told Chi Yun’er about it, vaguely hinting that he had feelings for her as well.

He told her that if it weren’t for his family’s poor circumstances, he would have taken over his parents’ job and stayed in the city, and he would have certainly paid a formal visit to her family to propose.

But now, he lamented, that was no longer possible. He just hoped she could forget him and find someone else to start a life with.

According to his plan, she was supposed to have pestered her family out of pity for him, begging them to find him a job. If once wasn’t enough, she’d do it twice; if twice wasn’t enough, then three times. With how much her parents doted on her, the Chi Family would have definitely agreed in the end.

Then the two of them could have stayed in the city, gotten engaged, and married. With the Yue Family’s help, his career would have been smooth sailing. Wouldn’t that have been perfect?

But no, the stupid woman saw her parents disagree, and in a fit of pique, she packed her bags and resolutely followed him to the countryside, claiming she wanted to endure the hardships with him.

’Hah. For the past year, she’s been playing the part of a delicate young miss, leaving him to do the work of two people all by himself.’

He’d been completely screwed over by her stupidity. This was a classic case of lifting a rock only to smash his own foot, wasn’t it?

Before, he had been a hundred percent confident he could get the Chi Family exactly where he wanted them; he never imagined his plan could fail.

Otherwise, he wouldn’t have found the hardship of farm labor and his bleak future so unbearable that he’d risk everything on a shortcut: ingratiating himself with the village chief’s family.

He didn’t even have to imagine how those people back home would mock him for marrying a country bumpkin once he finished his ”studies” here and found a way back to the Capital City.

Because of all this, Jiang Zishu felt even more justified in accepting the money, ration coupons, and other things Chi Yun’er gave him.

Any shred of guilt he’d felt moments ago about taking all her savings had long since vanished without a trace.

He lowered his voice.

”You can say that sort of thing to me, but if you say it outside, you’ll be targeted for public criticism. Village Chief Bian *is* the law here. Why else do you think I ended up in jail, even though I was the one who saved someone?”

”Do you think they’re interested in *me*? No, they’re interested in the fact that I’m from the Capital City, and that I might be able to bring their daughter—or even their whole family—to live in the Capital City one day.”

”Yun’er, if you care about me at all, you have to get through this. I’ll probably never have any hope of returning to the city in my lifetime, but you can. Your parents have good jobs, and you’re their only child.”

”You can always earn more money, but if you fall into their trap, there’s no turning back!”

”Just think about what this is doing to me!”

He said it as if he were enduring all this humiliation just to help her escape.

Tears welled up in Chi Yun’er’s eyes. She seemed deeply moved, whimpering, ”Zishu, why don’t we go to the police? How can they force someone to get married?”

”I refuse to believe that Village Chief Bian is powerful enough to blot out the sky with one hand! You think he’s bribed all the officers at the county police station, too?”

”Even if I have to throw money at it, I’ll make sure you get justice!”

Jiang Zishu couldn’t stand how she kept missing the point. This could all be over with a simple payment, but she had to be stubborn and insist on making it a matter of right and wrong.

”Chi Yun’er,” he said, his temples throbbing. ’I really want to crack her head open and see what’s inside. Wouldn’t it be much better to just give me the thousand yuan? Does she have to prove she’s some rich girl who can afford to throw money around whenever she wants?’

”You just don’t understand how the world works these days. Can you please stop making a scene?”

”Think about it. How many times have you refused to listen to my advice, and look at the mess it’s created in the end?”

”How much longer do you think I can protect you?”

Chi Yun’er scoffed internally. ’Adding fuel to the fire? When has this guy ever done anything *but* add fuel to the fire?’

’Take her recent conflict with Bian Yumin, for example. He was the one pulling the strings from behind the scenes.’

’No matter how dull she might be, she was still a blade for him to wield, charging into battle on his behalf while he sat back and reaped all the benefits!’

”But,” she said, tilting her head slightly with tears still on her cheeks. She looked utterly innocent and adorable, her eyes filled with a naivete that made her seem weak and easy to bully.

”But... even though my parents mail me money, they’re afraid I’ll spend it recklessly. They make me write down any time I spend or give away money, ration coupons, or anything else worth more than one yuan, and I have to send the list back home with my letters...”
