Chapter 33: Donating Grains ( 2 )

Noticing Yao Zhi’s worries, Wang Shen did not let her guess and explained, ”I do not know about your husband, but the White Tiger army is facing a food shortage.”

”Aunt Wang, how did you know about this?” Yao Zhi asked.

”When I went to the town this morning, I learned about this matter from the town guards. The General’s Mansion is looking for people who are willing to donate grains and other supplies.”

Yao Zhi frowned when she heard this and said, ”With the prolonged drought, it is hard for the commoners to have enough to eat, let alone donate grains.”

Wang Shen nodded and sighed. ”Isn’t that so? The guards said that the General’s Mansion is actually asking the merchants. But until now, no one has been willing to donate grains. Without food, how could our soldiers defend our border?”

”It will be hard to ask the merchants to donate without giving anything in return,” Yao Zhi muttered.

”Actually, the General’s Mansion did not ask for the grains for free. The General is willing to exchange his personal treasure collection for grains. It is just that with our current situation, what is the use of those treasures? Even if you have them, you cannot fill your stomach at all.”

After a moment of silence, Yao Zhi asked, ”Did the villagers or the village chief say anything about donating grains?”

”The village chief did tell everyone to find him if they wanted to donate grains. After all, the ones fighting on the frontline are our family. But no one has donated grains yet.”

Yao Zhi nodded and asked, ”Aunt Wang, did your family plan to donate grains?”

”We still have some grains from last year. Although it is not as good as new grains, at least it could fill the stomach. My family will donate five dan grains,” Wang Shen nodded.

Hearing this, Yao Zhi was surprised. Five dan was equal to two hundred fifty kilograms. She never expected Wang Shen would be willing to donate so much.

Yao Zhi finally said after she thought for a moment, ”Aunt Wang, I also want to donate some grains.”

”Yao girl, do you still have grains in your home?” Wang Shen asked doubtfully.

”I am alone and cannot eat too much, so there is still a lot left. What’s more, my husband gave me all of his money. If it is not enough, I can go to the town and buy more grains later,” Yao Zhi nodded.

Wang Shen hesitated for a moment before she said, ”Alright then.”

After a brief conversation, Wang Shen took her leave and returned to her house. She still had to send the grains to the village chief’s house.

When she was alone, Yao Zhi returned to her room and closed the door. Opening the system shop, she checked the grain selection.

Learning from her previous experience in the border market, she skipped the rice selection and checked the coarse grains instead. Even though they were coarse grains, the quality was much higher compared to the coarse grains sold in this era.

Besides millet, wheat, barley, and rice, soybean was also considered grains in this era, which she found out when she went to the border market for the second time. But millet was still the main diet of the commoners.

To avoid attracting attention, she bought twenty bags of millet, weighing twenty-five kilograms each bag, costing two hundred points. After she bought the millet, she bought one hundred pieces of grain sacks made of hemp fabric, costing her twenty points.

When she was done, she transferred the millet to the hemp sacks. Each sack could hold fifty kilograms, and she filled up ten sacks. After she was done, she put the millet in the wooden cart.

Since she did not know where the village chief’s house was, she locked the house and pushed the cart out. She would wait for Wang Shen and go with her later.

Not long after, Yao Zhi saw Wang Shen pulling a wooden cart filled with sacks. Wang Wuniang and her son were pushing the cart from behind.

When they saw her, Wang Wuniang let out a snort while Wang Shen smiled at her. ”Yao girl, do you want to go together?” she asked.

”Aunt Wang, I forgot where the village chief’s house is. It would be great if we could go together,” Yao Zhi nodded.

When Wang Wuniang heard this, she was taken aback and asked, ”Yao Zhi, you really lost your memories?”

”Sister-in-law, I can’t remember a lot of things. If I offended you in the past, I apologize to you now. I hope you can forgive me,” Yao Zhi replied.

Hearing this, Wang Wuniang was still skeptical. But under her mother-in-law’s warning gaze, she could only let out a hum and say nothing.

The road in the village was a dirt road and had a lot of small stones. Although they used a cart, the wheel was made of wood, and it was heavy. Even with three people pushing the cart, Wang Shen and her family were still breathing heavily when they arrived at the village chief’s house.

Thinking about how weak Yao Zhi’s body was, Wang Shen turned to her to check her condition. She thought that she would be breathless like before. Unexpectedly, although she was sweating profusely, her breathing was stable.

Seeing her like this, Wang Shen couldn’t help but be surprised. ’Yao girl’s luck is so good. She was able to get such a good pill. Not only was she cured, she even became much stronger now,’ she thought inwardly.

After catching their breath, Wang Wuniang knocked on the gate and called out, ”Village chief, are you home?”

Soon after, they heard a hoarse voice of an old man. ”Who is it?”

They waited for a while before the gate was opened. When the village chief saw the sacks on the carts, his eyes lit up. Looking at Wang Shen, he asked, ”Sister-in-law, is your family donating grains?”

”Village chief, my family wants to donate five dan grains,” Wang Shen nodded.

Hearing this, the village chief smiled and said, ”Come in, I will register your family’s name.”

Following the village chief, they pushed their carts into the yard.
