The Legendary Method Actor

The next day. Ray finished his early morning cultivation routine as the first hint of dawn touched the windows of the Spire. He felt his Aether settle, his mind sharp and clear.

He stood, expecting the familiar, quiet sounds of the suite waking up, the clink of a teapot, the smell of breakfast, Rina organizing the private training room for Master Zipkin’s imminent (and annoying) arrival.

There was only silence.

Detective: ”Wait. Hold it. 6:05 AM. She’s always active by 5:45 AM. The kitchen is cold. No movement.”

Veteran : ”A break in routine is a threat until proven otherwise. Perimeter’s clean. Check the asset.”

Detective: ”It’s not an infiltration. It’s an anomaly. It’s out of character for the target. And that stinks.”

Ray’s expression hardened, his post-cultivation calm vanishing instantly. He moved from his private room into the main hall. The kitchen was dark and empty. No food was prepared.

A cold, analytical dread began to creep up his spine. He walked to Rina’s closed bedroom door and knocked, his voice sharp.

”Rina?”

No response.

He knocked again, louder.

”Rina, are you awake?”

Silence.

Ray tried to open the door. It was locked.

He needed information, fast. He activated his Understudy Protocol feature, he would check on her through their Resonant Link.

The instant the link was established, he was hit by a wave of pure, unadulterated terror. It wasn’t a thought or a word; it was a raw, primal, chaotic feeling of being hunted, of inescapable dread. He couldn’t understand what was causing it, only that she was trapped inside it.

The situation was dire.

He pressed his hand flat against the wooden door, his expression now grim. He activated the Serene Cultivator’s ‘Aetheric Perception’ skill.

His vision ripped past the mundane. He didn’t just see her through the door; he saw a storm. The five glowing nodes he had so carefully ignited in her were still there, but they were being eclipsed, almost being swallowed by a pulsing, chaotic, smokey violet mass of energy that was emanating from her in waves and filling the entire room. Her own power, awakened by his, was now out of control.

Ray knew he had seconds. Breaking the door down was not an option; it was too loud and would alert the Silver Aegis guards outside. He sprinted from the door, his feet silent on the stone, and ran to his workshop. He returned a moment later with a thin, sturdy silver wire .

He knelt before Rina’s locked door, his hands steady. He activated the Stoic Assassin’s ‘Lockpicking’ skill. The world narrowed to the feel of the wire in the mechanism. He slid the silver wire into the simple lock, his fingers moving with a deft, supernatural precision. A soft click echoed in the silent hall. The door was open.

He shoved the door open and was hit by a wave of unnatural cold . The room was freezing. The shadows in the corners were no longer just shadows; they were deep, inky pools, stretching like grasping tendrils across the floor .

Rina was in her bed, but she wasn’t sleeping. She was curled up tightly into a ball, shaking violently as if she were in the center of a blizzard. Her face was locked in a struggling grimace of pure terror, and her breathing was fast and shallow. The smokey violet Umbral energy was no longer just an aura; it was a physical mist, coalescing around her, engulfing her in a pulsating shroud of living shadow.

”Rina!”

Ray rushed to her side. As his living, Aether-filled presence approached, the shadow-mist reacted . It sensed him. A lashing tendril of pure, primal fear, cold as the grave, snapped out at him .

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it’s taken without the author’s consent. Report it.

Ray reacted instinctively. It wasn’t a thought; it was a warrior’s reflex. He threw up his arm, not to block, but to shield. He didn’t cast a spell, he flared his own Primordial Aether as a pure defensive shield of brilliant, golden-white light.

The effect was instantaneous. The golden-white light Aether slammed into the shadow-mist. The mist recoiled as if it had met its nemesis, it burned, letting out a silent shriek that pierced Ray’s mind. The shadows shrank back from the burning light, disappearing as it was violently forced back into Rina’s body.

The room was clear. The shadows receded, and the oppressive cold lessened. But Rina was still unresponsive, her body still curled tightly, trapped in the nightmare that was fueling her power.

Ray grabbed Rina’s shoulder, shaking her gently, then harder.

”Rina! Wake up!” .

It was no use. Her body remained curled in that tight, defensive ball, her face locked in a grimace of pure terror. She was still immersed in her nightmare. .

He made a quick decision. He sat on the edge of her bed, his expression hardening with focus, and placed one hand gently on her forehead. Resonant Link is still active, Ray activated the World Weary Healer’s ‘Calming Presence’ skill.

He focused and felt Rina’s emotion again. He was instantly flooded with her terror. This time he can now see some images, it was a chaotic, screaming torrent of memory. It was from Rina’s point of view. He saw K in Kaelen’s form in the study, the fight, the flash of K’s impossible, Aether-wreathed movements. He saw K smiling, facing himself. And then, the memory that had broken her: K turning, her head suddenly looking at him, her dead, analytical eyes directly landing on Rina’s direction. Seeing her, acknowledging her, dismissing her, all in one terrifying instant .

He increased his Calming Presence through the Resonant Link , a wave of pure, golden safety and authority crashing against the shadowy terror of her nightmare. He pushed his own consciousness into the link, his mental voice a firm, undeniable command.

Rina. It is a memory. It is not real. You are safe. K can’t harm you. I am here. Find your center.

He felt her terror latch onto his presence, a drowning person finding an anchor. The chaotic, screaming images in her mind faltered. The nightmare broke.

Her violent shaking stopped. Her thrashing ceased. Her breathing, which had been fast and shallow, hitched, then evened out . A moment later, her eyes fluttered open .

She saw Ray’s face, inches from hers, his expression one of intense, worried focus. Her own face was pale, her hair matted to her temples, her body drenched in sweat.

”Young master...?”

she whispered, her voice raw .

”I... I saw her... K... she was...” .

Ray gently helped Rina sit up against the headboard, his Calming Presence still active, a soothing balm against her raw terror.

”You were having a nightmare,”

he explained, his voice soft but firm.

”Your new Umbral power... it’s tied to your subconscious. It reacted to your fear of K and... it trapped you inside it. It was feeding on the nightmare.”

Rina looked at her hands, now still and pale, a new kind of fear dawning in her eyes.

”So... my magic... it attacked me?”

”It reacted to you,”

Ray corrected gently. He verbalized the theory that was forming in his mind.

”This is why it’s a rare affinity . It’s not just about having it, it’s about mastering your own mind. If you can’t control your fear, this power will use it against you.”

He saw the determination solidifying in her gaze, replacing the fear.

”This is our new priority,”

Ray said, his voice firm.

”Forget about getting information about the Promotion Trials for now. We are going to focus 100% on your control.”

As if summoned by the very idea of a schedule, a loud, obnoxious knock echoed from the front door, followed immediately by the sound of the door opening. Caleb Zipkin had arrived for his ‘lesson.’

Ray gave Rina a firm, reassuring look.

”Stay here. Do not panic. Meditate, just as we practiced. Find your center and calm your mind. And once you are centered, try to remember the feeling after I shared with you the gift last night... and control the energy inside you. I will handle this.”

Rina, anchoring herself to his command, nodded and closed her eyes, her breathing already starting to deepen.

Ray got out of Rina’s room and saw Master Zipkin standing in the main living area. Caleb looked at him, then motioned with his head sideways, pointing with a questioning gaze at the dining table, which was conspicuously empty .

Ray understood his meaning instantly.

”Rina is sick today, Master Zipkin,”

He lied smoothly.

”I can fetch you some leftovers. We can eat that for breakfast.”

Caleb shrugged, his arms open wide in a gesture of lazy acceptance.

”Beggars can’t be choosers.”

The next hour was a tense, pro-forma exercise. Ray went through his ‘mediocre’ spell casting practice while Caleb napped in the training room. The moment the lazy master left, Ray sent a quick message via the academy mail system to Cassian and Eliza , canceling their training for the day and citing an unexpected complication with his research.

His other duties handled, he returned immediately to Rina’s room. She was still sitting on her bed, deep in meditation, her face pale but set in concentration .

Ray activated Serene Cultivator’s ‘Aetheric Perception’ skill. He looked at her, and a small, relieved smile touched his lips. The chaotic, smokey violet energy was no longer a wild, pulsing storm. It was rotating fine, held in a stable, calm orbit by her focused, disciplined will. The Mana Weaving skill had given her the anchor she needed. This new, dangerous power was now their single most important task.
