The Legendary Method Actor

The academy infirmary was silent, a stark contrast to the bustle before the break of the academy. As Ray and Sergeant Svane approached Kaelen’s room, Ray noted the two Silver Aegis guards are still present guarding Kalen’s room.

Svane gave a curt nod to his men, but Ray’s gaze drifted past them, scanning the high, shadowed alcoves and the junctions of the ceiling. He activated his Serene Cultivator’s Aetheric Perception, and he found them: two faint, still Aetheric signatures, perfectly masked to a normal mage’s senses, hidden in the deep gloom. The Headmaster had approved his request. Kaelen was being guarded by her own unseen ‘Shadows.’

The guards unsealed the door, and Ray entered, Svane taking his post just inside, his gaze sweeping the room before settling on its sole occupant.

Kaelen was propped up on several pillows, her face pale and exhausted, but her sharp, intelligent eyes were lucid and alert. The moment she saw Ray, that sharpness intensified. Ray could almost feel the Psychological Fortitude skill he had given her, a cold, invisible armor that was clearly holding back the tide of her psychological trauma, channeling it into a focused, simmering rage.

“You came,”

she said. Her voice was weak, but the words were firm.

“I have news,”

Ray said quietly, pulling a simple wooden chair to her bedside.

“The investigation into Drennan Lars is complete.”

Kaelen’s hands, resting on the white sheets, clenched into fists.

“Tell me.”

“He was found two days ago in a rented room in the lower district of Solhaven city,”

Ray recounted, his voice low and clinical.

“Deceased. The official ruling is suicide. The trail for K is cold.”

Kaelen didn’t cry. She didn’t look surprised. The news seemed to land on the cold armor of her fortitude and was instantly forged into fuel for her fury. She stared at the far wall, her breathing steady, but Ray could feel the waves of rage radiating from her.

“Suicide,”

she hissed, the word a puff of venom.

“K tied up the loose end. That poor, clumsy fool… he was just a tool.”

Her rage was twofold, and Ray could see it clearly. First was the searing guilt that Drennan, her harmless, puppy-like study partner, had been targeted, used, and discarded just to get to her. But beneath that was a deeper, colder fury, a profound sense of betrayal.

“My father’s organization,”

she whispered, her voice trembling with this new, colder anger.

“The Argent Hand. They did this. They targeted me. Their member’s daughter.”

She turned her sharp, burning gaze back to Ray.

“He died because of me, Ray. Because of what I am to them, and what I am to you.”

She clenched her fists again, her knuckles white.

“I won’t be a victim. I won’t be a tool for them or a burden to you. When I get out of this bed, I will do everything I can to get stronger.”

Her voice was no longer that of a victim; it was a vow.

“And then, we will hunt K together.”

The intensity of her vow was a tangible force in the small room. Ray simply nodded, his own internal committee offering their swift, silent analysis.

Healer: ”Her rage is a powerful shield. She is actively channeling her trauma into a singular, external purpose. It is a potent, if dangerous, psychological defense mechanism.”

Veteran: ”Good. That’s the fire a soldier needs. She’s not a liability; she’s an asset. She’ll be ready for the field.”

Ray looked at the pale, weakened girl who was already preparing for war. He knew Kaelen Thorne was no longer just an acquaintance or a source. She was his ally, bound to him by a shared enemy and a shared, burning purpose.

The two-month term break descended upon Solhaven Academy, emptying its halls and leaving the sprawling demi-plane in a state of quiet, sun-drenched stillness. For Ray, it was not a vacation. It was a crucible.

In the vast, silent study of his suite in the Spire of Sages, Ray sat cross-legged on the floor. He was deep in the meditative trance of the Ashvane Method, his breathing slow and measured. The faint, golden aura that now clung to him was no longer a weak, flickering light; it was a steady, stable, and radiant glow, pulsing with a quiet, confident power. His body, once a prison, was being strengthened day by day, his capacity for his newfound power expanding with each silent, disciplined session.

In the adjoining training room, Rina sat opposite him, her eyes closed, her breathing even. This was their new routine. Her training was no longer just about daggers and shadows; it was about mastering the mind.

I can still see the monster.

Rina thought, her focus turned inward. The memory of K’s blank, emotionless face, wearing her face, was still there, a cold, hard knot of terror. But now, thanks to the Meditative Stillness skill Ray had imparted, it was no longer a wave that drowned her. It was a storm on the other side of a thick glass window. She could observe her fear, acknowledge it, and let it pass. She was mastering the trauma, building a fortress of calm in her own mind.

Across the demi-plane, in a deserted Valor training hall, the sound of splintering wood and cracking stone echoed. Kaelen Thorne moved with a lethal, furious grace. She was not practicing; she was punishing.

A heavy combat dummy, built to withstand a Silver Aegis’s strike, was blasted backward as she struck it with a focused kinetic pulse. Her face was pale, her expression a mask of cold rage. She was channeling all the trauma, all the violation of K’s attack, into her magic. Her power was no longer just precise; it was violent.

High in the rafters, a ‘groundskeeper’ who had no reason to be there watched her with unseen, analytical eyes, her hidden Shadow Guard detail, courtesy of Ray’s request, before silently melting back into the shadows.

The quiet of the break was not all training. One afternoon, a letter arrived, bearing the chaotic, ink-stained seal of Master Elias. Ray read it, his expression thoughtful.

...must unfortunately suspend the stipend...

the letter read in its frantic script.

...new budgetary constraints... the fools in accounting... Please understand, my boy! The door is always open! Return when you can, and we will make history again!...

Ray folded the letter, a flicker of genuine understanding passing over his features. The loss of Elias’s 500 Marks per week wasn’t catastrophic, he still had his 2,000-Mark monthly stipend from the Headmaster, but it was inconvenient. His total monthly income had just been significantly reduced.

He focused his will inward, interfacing with his Custodian’s Crest to check his current reserves.

[ACADEMIC MARKS: 50,467]

A quiet, internal debate began in his Ambient Presence.

Courtier: ”A significant reduction in disposable assets. This curtails our operational budget and slows the acquisition of non-essential resources for long-term projects. We must be more... frugal.”

Weaver: ”Frugal?! I require fuel! My genius runs on high-grade reagents and, more importantly, high-calorie food! This is unacceptable!”

Conman: ”Hey, relax, firefly. 2,000 a month from the Headmaster just for breathing is still the sweetest gig in this place. But Elias’s cash was our ’fun money,’ our off-the-books slush fund. Now we have to budget. I hate budgeting.”

Ray let out a small sigh. The pressure wasn’t for immediate survival, but for his long-term, ambitious plans. The loss of his secondary, ’no-questions-asked’ income stream was a strategic complication he would have to manage.

The final event during the 2 month break came from Sergeant Svane, who delivered his last report on the Drennan case.

”My lord, the investigation is a dead end,”

Svane stated, his voice a low, formal baritone.

”The academy compensated the Drennan family for their loss. Our intelligence confirms they packed their belongings and... vanished. They’ve been resettled somewhere, far from here.”

Ray met the sergeant’s grim gaze. He understood the subtext. The Drennan’s family hadn’t just ‘vanished,’ they had been vanished by the academy, their silence bought, the loose end neatly tied up.

”There are no new leads,”

Svane concluded.

”K is a ghost.”

The pursuit was over. The shadow war had gone cold.

After the academy break, the new academic year began with a burst of energy. The quiet, empty corridors of the Spire of Sages, which had been Ray’s silent fortress for the past two months, now felt alive again. A sharp, energetic knock broke the studious silence of the suite.

Rina, moving with the quiet confidence of a trusted aide, opened the door.

“We’re back!”

Eliza Vance announced, beaming as she walked past Rina, Cassian trailing excitedly behind her. They were back from the two-month term break, their faces flushed from the walk and brimming with energy.

“Ray!”

Cassian was practically vibrating, clutching a new, ancient-looking journal as if it were a holy relic.

“You won’t believe what I found in the family archives! My ancestor’s notes… they hint at a secondary research site! The implications for his original theories are staggering! We have to…”

“Cassian, honestly, can you breathe for one second?”

Eliza cut through his academic zeal with a wave of her hand. Her gaze fixed on Ray, her sharp, intelligent eyes narrowing slightly.

Her Lie Detection skill, honed by months of quiet practice, was active. She wasn’t just looking at Ray; she was reading him.

“It’s good to see you too, Ray,”

Eliza said, her usual witty smile replaced by a look of intense, analytical curiosity.

“But you… you feel different. Stronger.”

Her gaze flickered towards the corridor, where she had undoubtedly seen a number of Silver Aegis unmistakable presence.

“And I noticed an increase of guard detail outside your suite. What happened while we were gone?”
