The Legendary Method Actor

Outside the suite, Sergeant Svane gave a curt, final order to the last active Shadow Guard.

”Maintain high alert status. Send an emergency request to the Headmaster: ’K’ has escaped, request immediate support personnel to re-establish and secure the perimeter.”

He paused, his gaze hardening.

”And make it clear that if another attack happens and Lord Croft is harmed, it will be due to a lack of resources. She must be informed upon her return.”

The Shadow Guard nodded silently and, using its own communication crest, began sending the report and request to Andrade. Svane, his official duty now conflicting with the personal debt he felt, turned his back to the guard and resumed his post by the door, a stoic, unmoving statue.

Inside the suite, Ray, finally let his exhaustion show. The adrenaline had faded, leaving behind a bone-deep weariness.

”It’s over for now, Rina,”

he said, his voice rough.

”We need to rest.”

He took a weary step toward his bedroom door. He had barely moved when he heard a choked sob behind him. He turned. Rina was standing where he’d left her, tears streaming down her face, her shoulders shaking with silent, uncontrollable sobs. Before he could speak, she rushed forward and hugged him tightly, burying her face in his shoulder.

”I’m sorry!”

she cried, her voice muffled against his tunic.

”I’m so sorry, young master! All that training... all those nights... and I... I just... I was so scared. I didn’t do anything!”

Her voice broke with shame.

”I was useless! A burden again!.”

Ray was surprised by the sudden, desperate embrace, his body stiffening for a moment. Then, his expression softened. He activated the World-Weary Healer’s ’Calming Presence’, letting a wave of gentle reassurance flow from him. He gently patted her back.

”Rina, no. You weren’t a burden,”

he said, his voice soft but firm.

”You were exactly where I needed you to be. You were protecting me. That was your post. You held it. It’s alright. Everything is fine.”

After a long moment, her sobs began to subside. She pulled back, hastily wiping her tears and the tears she had gotten on Ray’s tunic with her sleeve, her face flushed with embarrassment.

”I... I’m sorry,”

she said again, her voice thick.

”Please, go and rest, young master. You’ve done too much. I’ll... I’ll take care of this mess.”

Ray looked at her determined, tear-streaked face and gave a small, tired nod. He walked to his room, closed the door, and leaned against it for a moment, the silence of his room a stark contrast to the chaos outside. He did not go to bed. He sat cross-legged on the floor and immediately entered a deep meditative state, initiating the ‘Ashvane Method’ to begin the essential process of his own recovery.

The next day, sunlight streamed into the room, cutting a bright, warm rectangle across the floor. Ray opened his eyes, his consciousness surfacing from the deep, restorative state of the Ashvane Method. He was still in his seated meditative position. He took a deep, full breath. The profound, bone-deep exhaustion from the previous night was gone. In its place was a thrumming, vibrant energy that sang in his very core. He felt... strong. Better than ever.

System, show status.

Ray commanded inwardly.

The familiar blue interface responded, displaying his new, fundamentally altered statistics.

[HOST STATS - Age: 12]

[Strength: 18 / (Peer Average: 13)]

[Stamina: 21 / (Peer Average: 15)]

[Constitution: 24 / (Peer Average: 13)]

[Life-Force Capacity: 40 / (Peer Average: 15)]

[Current Status: Aetheric Leak (SEALED)]

Ray stared at the numbers, a look of pleasant surprise softening his features. His physical stats had all improved but it was his Life-Force capacity that had taken a significant leap, and got his attention. A full 10-point jump. The Eccentric Scholar immediately supplied a theory, its voice buzzing with excitement.

Scholar: ”Fascinating! The ’Ashvane Method’ isn’t just for gradual cultivation. It appears a cycle of ’Critical Depletion’ followed by ’Sustained Recovery’ triggers a compensatory adaptation. We ’pressure tested’ the vessel, forced it to almost empty, and it healed back stronger, expanding its capacity to handle future strain. We must factor this high-risk, high-reward cycle into future training models!”

Veteran: ”Hmph. A reckless gamble. But the results... are solid. You took a hit that should have put you down for a week and got stronger. Good. Now the reserves actually match the weapon.”

Healer: ”Be cautious, Scholar. You call it a ’high-risk’ cycle, but you are speaking of the host’s life force. Pushing the vessel to such a breaking point repeatedly... it’s a trauma. It may heal stronger now, but repeated trauma can create unforeseen scars. This is a dangerous path to walk.”

Ray acknowledged the Healer’s warning, but his thoughts went back to the fight, to K’s effortless use of Aether, the casual bursts of power, the nerve strikes, the Aether-wreathed blows. K’s Aether capacity must be immense, making Ray’s own new pool of 40 points seem shallow in comparison. He realized this new, larger capacity wasn’t just a buffer; it was his greatest trump card, the fuel for his Aether-Infusion. He had to find more ways to cultivate it, to widen that well until it became an ocean.

Ray emerged from his room, his body feeling renewed and thrumming with a vibrant energy. He saw Rina, who had clearly been up for hours. The study, visible from the living area, was still a disaster zone from the fight, but the main living area itself was already almost spotless. Rina, her face pale but determined, had obviously channeled her fear and nervous energy from the previous night into her work.

He saw her struggling to move a heavy, overturned oak side-table, her feet straining against the floor as she tried to drag it back into place. Feeling a pang of guilt that she had been left to handle this alone, he walked over.

”Let me help.”

”My lord, no, I can...”

she began to protest, but Ray had already taken hold of the other end. Before she could muster a full objection, he lifted. The heavy table, which had likely taken two stewards to move in, came off the floor with an ease that made her gasp. He calmly set it upright in its proper position.

Just as he straightened, the suite door opened. Sergeant Svane entered. His left arm was now neatly bandaged, and though he looked tired, his stoic, professional air was firmly in place. His gaze took in the scene: Ray and Rina standing over the newly righted table. He paused for a beat, his gaze unreadable. Then, without a word, he walked to the other side of the room, took hold of a heavy, splintered armchair that had been thrown aside in the fight, and began carrying it toward the debris pile near the door.

Ray watched, a flicker of understanding in his eyes.

Courtier: ”Note the action. He is no longer just a guard acting on orders. He is performing a menial, domestic task. He is demonstrating his new, personal loyalty in the only way a soldier knows: through service.”

Rina stared, her mouth slightly open, absolutely stunned to see the elite, stoic Silver Aegis guard cleaning up debris like a common steward. Ray, however, accepted the gesture for what it was. As Svane placed the broken chair on the pile, Ray simply nodded.

”Thank you, Sergeant.”

After the last piece of heavy debris was moved, Sergeant Svane straightened, his duty as a helper complete, his duty as a soldier resuming. He turned to Ray, his expression grim.

”Lord Croft. I have a report.”

Svane began, his voice low.

”My fellow Silver Aegis, along with the Shadow Guards, attempted to track K’s location within the academy. We found nothing. There was no report of a sighting or a burning individual. K seems to have... disappeared without a trace. Which…should be impossible.”

Svane paused, his gaze hardening with professional frustration. He continued,

”We have confirmed K did not use the Nexus Gateway or the main academy gates. The operative might still be within the academy demi-plane.”

Svane let out a quiet, frustrated sigh.

”I have requested additional discreet patrols from the Shadow Guard contingent, but with the term break, manpower is limited.”

Rina, who had been standing nearby listening, went pale. The thought of the impostor, K, still loose in the academy, perhaps able to get to them again, sent a visible shiver of terror through her. Her hand instinctively moved to her waist, her fingers gripping the hilt of the dagger hidden beneath her apron.

Svane’s grim report about K’s disappearance hung heavy in the air, Rina’s suppressed fear a tangible presence in the room. Svane, seeing their expressions, seemed to remember his other, more positive, piece of intelligence.

”Lord Croft,”

he said, his tone softening slightly.

”There is one piece of good news. Adept Thorne is awake. She is weak, but the academy master healer has cleared her for a brief visit. She is asking for you.”

A wave of genuine relief washed over Ray, cutting through the cold dread K’s escape had left behind.

”She’s alive,”

he breathed, the words a quiet confirmation.

”That’s... good. Very good.”

Later that day, Ray and Sergeant Svane walked to the main infirmary. The section Kaelen occupied was clearly a high-security area. Two of Svane’s fellow Silver Aegis guards stood at perfect attention, flanking the door. As they approached, Ray’s gaze drifted past the two visible sentries. He subtly activated his Serene Cultivator’s ’Aetheric Perception’ and the Gritty Detective’s ’Observation Skills’. He scanned the architecture, the high, shadowed alcove above the door, the deep-set window embrasure to the left. He spotted them: two faint, still Aetheric signatures, perfectly masked to a normal mage’s senses, and two sets of eyes, nearly invisible in the gloom, watching their approach. He internally approved of the layered security. Headmaster Andrade wasn’t taking any more chances.

Svane nodded to his men, who opened the door. They entered the quiet, sterile room. Kaelen was propped up on several pillows, her face pale and exhausted, her arm perhaps bandaged. But her sharp, intelligent eyes were wide open and alert, tracking them as they entered.

”Ray…”

she whispered, her voice strained but firm.

”you came.”

As Ray approached her bedside, he activated the Gritty Detective’s ’Observation Skills’ and the Charismatic Conman’s ’Lie Detection’ skill. He needed to be absolutely certain.

”The man Svane reported... ’Drennan’...”

Kaelen began, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage.

”He... he attacked me before the poisoning. He was waiting in my room. He... tortured me. For information.”

Detective: ”Vitals match the statement. Slight tremor in the hands, pupils dilate when referencing the ’torture’. Consistent emotional response to trauma.”

”Drennan...”

Kaelen whispered, her eyes filling with a mixture of fear and fury.

”Who I have been told now is K, wanted to know everything about your patron. Your patron’s methods, name... and how you gained access to the Genesis Crystal Chamber. I... I told him nothing.”

Ray watched her, his senses fully engaged. He saw the genuine terror in her eyes as she recalled the event, the tightening of her jaw as she spoke of her defiance, the slight, involuntary flinch as she recalled the pain.

Conman: ”She’s clean, kid. No deception tells. Heart rate is elevated, but it’s pure, uncut fear and anger. She’s telling the 100% ugly truth.”

Ray relaxed his internal posture, the verification complete. He, Svane, and Kaelen shared a look, a silent, grim acknowledgement. K’s objective was confirmed: high-level intelligence about Ray’s power and the academy’s deepest secrets. And K was still loose on the grounds. They were, officially, in this together, united by a common, invisible, and utterly ruthless enemy.
