The Legendary Method Actor

After thinking of the perfect alibi for his spell-casting versatility, Ray moved to a locked chest, a personal purchase he’d made in the market district on one of his rare, guarded trips. He pulled out a set of simple but sturdy, dark leather gloves. He then retrieved his alchemical tools, several spools of fine silver and copper wiring, and a small, dull, mana-conductive crystal.

He sat at his desk and got to work. He activated Tri-Concurrent Partial Immersion, flooding his mind with the three distinct, powerful personas.

Scholar: ”Blueprint loaded. The theoretical matrix is sound. We will inlay a simple, mana-conductive circuit using the silver wiring, terminating at the crystal. It will be functional.”

Weaver: ”Functional? Ugh how dull! No, no, no! That’s the chassis, you dusty relic! We need the paint job! We will etch a beautiful, complex, non-functional runic matrix over it! It must look like it’s doing the work! It has to sing!”

Scribe: ”Processing... Re-routing engraving path. A functional conductive layer will be overlaid with a non-functional aesthetic matrix. Precision will be maintained. Executing.”

Ray began the meticulous process. He wasn’t enchanting the glove; he was dressing it.

Guided by the Arcane Scribe’s inhuman, surgical steadiness, his fingers moved with a speed and precision that was almost mechanical. First, he inlaid the functional circuit, a simple, hidden path of silver and copper wire leading from the cuff to the knuckle, where he seated the dull, mana-conductive crystal.

Weaver: ”Yes! More embellishment on the knuckles! Make it look impossibly complex! Make it awesome!”

Scholar: ”Idiot! That embellishment is structurally meaningless! It serves no purpose!”

Weaver: ”It serves the greatest purpose, you dusty relic! It makes the prop beautiful!”

Ray’s fingertips, now acting as peerless engraving tools, began etching the Crimson Weaver’s complex, beautiful, and utterly blank runic matrix onto the surface, the flashy lines swirling around the functional but now hidden circuit, making it look impossibly sophisticated.

Conman: ”A final step. A security protocol. The con is useless if the prop can be used by our enemies. We must ’key’ the circuit.”

How?

Ray asked.

Scholar: ”Before sealing the crystal , we will ’prime’ it. We will channel a minuscule, permanent trace of your own unique, pure Aether into its matrix. This will become the ’lock.’ The circuit will now only close and light up when it detects that exact Aetheric signature. To any other user, it will be a dead, inert piece of junk.”

Ray does so, touching the crystal with his finger and injecting a tiny, near-invisible spark of his golden power, ‘keying’ the glove to himself forever.

It looked incredibly advanced. Ray held the finished glove in his hand.

Weaver: ”It is... a masterpiece of misdirection! A perfect prop for our narrative!”

Conman: ”It’s the alibi! It’s the proof! I love it. What do we call our new alibi?”

Scholar: ”Given that its function is purely theoretical... ’The Theorist’s Glove’ seems apt.”

Weaver: ”Yes! ’The Theorist’s Glove’! Oh, that’s deliciously dry! Perfect!”

As the name was settled, a new notification bloomed in Ray’s mind.

[NEW ITEM CRAFTED: THEORIST’S GLOVE (UNIQUE)]

[ITEM TYPE: ARCANE PROP (RESPONSIVE)]

[DESCRIPTION: A leather glove with a complex, non-functional runic matrix etched onto its surface. It contains a simple, real mana-conductive circuit of silver and copper, terminating in a central crystal.]

[EFFECT: (Biometric Lock & Visual Effect) The conductive circuit is ’keyed’ to the host’s unique Aetheric Signature. It will remain inert for all other users. When the host channels mana into the glove, the circuit will glow and pulse with light, providing a high-security, personal ’prop’ for ’Arcane Deception.’]

This is the ’proof,’

Unauthorized usage: this narrative is on Amazon without the author’s consent. Report any sightings.

Ray thought, a satisfied smile touching his lips.

The next time I cast a different element affinity spell, I’ll do it while wearing this. When Cassian asks how, I’ll just tap the glove and say, It’s not affinity. It’s just good engineering.

[SKILLED APPLICATION DETECTED]

[EVENT: TRI-ARCHETYPE CRAFTING SYNTHESIS]

[PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: INSPIRED]

[ANALYSIS: Host successfully utilized Tri-Concurrent Partial Immersion to synthesize the skills of three distinct archetypes: Eccentric Scholar, Crimson Weaver and Arcane Scribe in a complex crafting task. The resulting ’Unique’ item is a high-fidelity prop that perfectly solves a key strategic deception problem. This novel application of synthesizing multiple archetypes for a non-combat, practical goal is a new benchmark of host’s control. Largest Mastery Gain awarded.]

[MASTERY GAIN: Arcane Engineering +20%, Arcane Improvisation +15%, Precision Engraving +10% (CAPSTONE already reached, adding half of mastery gain to the next archetype skill ’Runic Sight.’)]

He held the prop up to the light. He now had a perfect, plausible, physical alibi for his greatest performance.

Later that day, Ray examines and gets used to the new Theorist’s Glove on his left hand. The leather was sturdy, and the craftsmanship of his archetypes was, as he’d expected, flawless. He admired the intricate, ‘heretical’ runic matrix the Eccentric Scholar and the Crimson Weaver had designed, so beautifully and meaninglessly etched into the knuckles by the Arcane Scribe.

It was time for a system test.

He focused his will, drawing a minuscule, controlled stream of mana and channeling it into the glove’s circuit.

The effect was instantaneous and perfect. The inlaid silver wires flashed with a faint, silvery-white light, and the dull crystal at the center pulsed with a soft, steady, and convincing glow.

He cut the flow, and the glove went dark. A satisfied smile touched his lips. His alibi was ready.

A silent chime flashed in his mind.

[SYSTEM ALERT: ’CALEB ZIPKIN’ DETECTED AT MAIN ENTRANCE.]

Ray’s smile didn’t waver. He slowly took off the glove, his internal committee already assessing the new development.

Courtier: ”Ah. It seems our concerned letter to the Headmaster had the desired effect. The truant tutor returns.”

Ray stood, straightened his tunic, and walked to the main door. He opened it to find Sergeant Svane posted diligently, as always. Beside him stood Caleb Zipkin, who looked even more disheveled than the week before. His straw hat was pulled low, and he looked deeply annoyed.

Before Ray could even offer a greeting and invite him in, Caleb barged past him, shuffling into the suite.

Ray, the master performer, was left standing in the open doorway. He calmly turned to the empty hallway where his tutor had just been and gestured politely.

”Hello, Master Zipkin. How have you been? Please come in.”

He closed the door, his polite smile vanishing. He didn’t even have to take a full step into the living room before Caleb’s rant hit him.

”Really, kid? Tattling to the Headmasters? I’ve got tenure. I don’t need this!”

Caleb snapped, spinning to face him.

”I already gave you a passing mark! You made fire! An orange one! You passed ’Foundational Mana Control 101’! What more do you want?”

Ray stood his ground, letting the 6th-Circle Master’s frustration wash over him. He had to pivot from tattletale to dedicated, if unorthodox, student.

”But Master!”

Ray said, his voice a perfect blend of youthful eagerness and desperation.

”I want to learn more! I want to get stronger. I need to. But... my magic isn’t like yours. It’s not... it’s not affinity. It’s theory-based. It’s... engineering.”

Caleb, who had been angrily pacing in the main hall, stopped. He turned, his eye twitching from under the brim of his straw hat .

”Engineering? What are you rambling about now, kid?”

”This,”

Ray said, playing his card. He held up his left hand, now covered in the new, intricately-etched leather glove.

”This is how I do it. It’s... it’s my ’Theorist’s Glove’ . It’s just... a prototype, of course.”

Caleb’s lazy expression vanished. Before Ray could even finish his sentence, the 6th-Circle Master Mage of Arcane Engineering snatched the glove from his hand.

All traces of the annoyed, disheveled slacker were gone, replaced by a sharp, analytical horror . Caleb’s eyes, no longer half-lidded, scanned the glove with a speed and intensity that made Ray’s stomach tighten.

The craftsmanship... It’s flawless. Master-level. The inlay is perfect. The seating of the crystal... But the runes... they’re heretical! This is gibberish! A propulsion matrix tied to a transmutation symbol? It’s... it’s the same arrogant, unorthodox nonsense I used to draft before... before the accident.”

His thumb brushed over the dull crystal. He channeled a small, precise thread of his mana into the glove’s circuit. It remained cold. Dark. Inert .

It’s Aether-keyed?! It... it didn’t respond to my Mana at all. It’s keyed to his signature. This kid... he’s not just a fluke, he’s a ticking time bomb. An arrogant, unsupervised child reinventing the very same ’forbidden’ magic that broke me.

He wasn’t intrigued. He was terrified. His lazy, tenured life was over. He now had a new, terrible motivation: damage control .

He threw the glove back at Ray as if it were a venomous snake.

”This... is dangerous nonsense,”

he hissed, his voice no longer lazy but tight with a cold, contained panic.

”You’re an arrogant little fluke playing with fire, and you don’t even see the bomb you’re building.”

Ray’s internal committee recoiled in shock.

Courtier: ”He sees through it! This is a failure! The con didn’t work!”

”Fine,”

Caleb groaned, aggressively rubbing his temples as if trying to ward off a migraine.

”You want a tutor? You’ve got one. Andrade wants me to make sure you don’t ’hurt yourself’ ? Fine. I’ll be here. Every. Single. Day.”

He fixed Ray with a weary, dead-eyed stare.

”Not to teach you how to get stronger. But to make sure you don’t blow a hole in my demi-plane with this... heresy. My naps are over, thanks to you.”

He turned to leave, his shoulders slumped in profound exhaustion. He paused at the door, his hand on the frame.

”Be in the practice room at 8 AM tomorrow,”

he said, his voice flat.

”And don’t be late. I hate exerting effort after noon.”

The door clicked shut, leaving Ray in stunned silence.
