Subject Zero: Faceless

He asked Marrow first, because Marrow was the man who had read the word off his slate on the first day and not argued with it.

The brief had ended. The element leaders had gone out with their stones lifted and the survey rolling itself back up under the last one, and Marrow was folding the Corps Operations slate into its case when Rook stood and put his own slate on the table where the survey had been.

The prisoner from the compound said I was never unleashed. He said the leash is inside. Under the Sight it was true — he believes it as a thing he did. You hold the one on my strap. Tell me what he meant.

Marrow read it standing. He read it a second time, which he did with orders and not, in Rook’s experience, with anything else.

”I’ve had a great many men in a chair,” he said. ”Prisoners talk in metaphor when they’ve decided not to talk in facts, and the better trained they are, the better the metaphor.” He closed the case. ”I hold a leash. It’s on your strap, it has a contact and a signature, and when I put my hand on it four nights ago I chose not to pull. His is a figure of speech. When he can point at his as I can point at mine, I’ll take the question seriously. Until then it’s a sentence, and I’ve heard better ones from worse men.”

He read me my number every morning for eleven years. He isn’t a man in a chair.

”He’s a man in a chair now.” Marrow tucked the case under his arm. ”That’s the only fact about him I’m working with. Major Renner has the rest.”

Renner had the rest laid out on her table in three columns — the slates, woken and set side by side, and beside them her own pencil transcription of one column, and beside that the ordinary copy of his intake file, the part below the tier, open to the page where the appendix should have begun and ran into a bar.

”Sit. You’ve asked the colonel. I watched you go in and I watched your leg on the way out.”

He sat. He didn’t repeat the question; she had its words in front of her in his own account from the night before.

”These are measurements of the draw.” She touched the first slate. ”Not the thing you aim. The one a technician at your intake base called drawing through him and a colonel threw a breaker on. The Foundry measured it for years. Their numbers go past anything our rig recorded before the panels went, and they go past it early and stay there, and in the last column they’d started writing a word instead of a figure.” She showed him the word. He couldn’t read the hand. ”I can’t read that either. He can.”

And the leash.

”What’s in the appendix I don’t know. It’s cross-referenced to the Index, and the Index is above my file. I’ll say one more thing that is below it. I asked Thorne for the designation on that man’s case. The string itself, not the bracket he sent it in. It came at first light. It’s a short code, and it isn’t a Corps format and it isn’t Directorate. I copied it.” She turned her pencil transcription so he could read the bottom line. ”If that means anything to you, don’t tell me tonight. Tell me when you know what it means.”

He read the code. Seven characters. He kept his hands where they were and read it once more, slowly, and did not reach for the kit pocket where a printed line had ridden beside a wooden bird since the night before a transport.

It might, he wrote. I’ll tell you when I know.

The threat-assessment officer came north on the afternoon supply convoy with the cylinder’s assessment in a case and no escort, and Rook knew him from the command tent’s flap before the man had turned round: the shoulders that had stood at a wall map two provinces south beside a bone-colored pin, the same unhurried hands. He had said we don’t know yet to a question about a fifth operation, in a room with Adair in it, and had been right.

He nodded to the mask and did not give his name; nobody had, then either.

”Colonel. Major.” He set the case on the survey and opened it, and inside, on a fitted bed of felt, lay the split cylinder from the hut, cleaned, with its casing hinged open along the crack the heavy rifle had made. ”Corps has had this since the day before yesterday. I’ve had it since it came off the truck. Here’s what it is, and then I’ll tell you why I’ve come north with it rather than a report.”

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

The core of the thing was a Core-cell. Rook knew it from the fence stanchions on every base he’d stood on, a squat housing the size of a fist with the etching worn to a shine on two faces. ”Meridian ward-cell. Depot stock. The etching’s ours, the housing’s ours, and there’s a serial ground off the base. The depot two provinces west lost four hundred of these when it was hit. We logged them as lost, incidental.” He turned the housing a quarter. ”It’s wired backward. The ward-cell in one of our stanchions is laid to hold a Classified output out. This one’s laid to take an output in, and the four of them together make a line that catches whatever crosses it, tuned to a measurement somebody took of him. They didn’t invent this. They read our doctrine and turned it round, in our own housing, with our own cells.”

”Which is why it stopped the aimed use,” Renner said, ”and not the other thing.”

”Which is why it stopped what we measured, and not what we never managed to.” The officer looked at the mask. ”I’ve read Lieutenant Osei’s picket report and yours, Major, and my assessment is the same on both. Everything they’ve built, they’ve built out of what we have. The cells are ours. The doctrine’s ours. The measurements they built it against, they took under their own roof, and we left them in the walls. I’ve come north because the next thing they turn round will be one of ours too, and I’d like to be standing next to the colonel when I find out what.”

Marrow said, ”You’ll have a tent.”

Rook stood and put the slate on the survey beside the cylinder.

The man who read those walls said I was never unleashed. The leash is inside. You assess what they’ve built. Tell me what they built into me.

The officer read it without picking it up. Then he reached into his coat and took out a slip of paper, folded once, and set it beside the slate, and Rook knew what it was before it was open because he had one of his own in a drawer at the Directorate with the same crease.

”I put in for your intake appendix the week I gave the remnants their name. I run threat assessment for the northern territories and one of their objectives had your file on it, and I wanted to know what they’d built you to answer to. That came back. It’s the same slip you got, and in all my years at that desk I’d never had one before.” He left the paper where it lay. ”My assessment of you has a wall in it. I didn’t build the wall and I can’t see over it. I’ve never yet found a thing of theirs that wasn’t ours first.”

He laid the two lines side by side on his cot that evening under the tent’s one lamp: Renner’s pencil, seven characters, and a printed line from a records counter, gone soft at one fold from riding in a kit pocket against a wooden bird.

They were the same seven characters.

He had known they would be from the moment Renner turned her transcription round. He had made himself wait, and walk, and stand through a threat assessment before he looked, because he had wanted the knowing to be a thing he did on purpose. Now he looked. The man who had assessed his face had signed under a designation Meridian no longer issued to anyone. And the man who had read him his number every morning for eleven years had been put back on the road, the month the war ended, on the authority of the same one.

Two people had worn the designation, and he knew what each of them had done while wearing it; what it meant was still a blank on a line.

He went to the relay tent.

The signals corporal had the outgoing pad ready before Rook was through the flap, and looked at the canvas roof while Rook wrote.

Request under standing authorization, provisional archive credential, Rook / Ashfall-Zero. One: full resolution of the personnel classification code copied beneath — the entry, not the tier’s number. Direct to the records counter. He stopped, and then added a line the request did not need, under the credential number, where a clerk with a slip in her pocket would see it. You said you’d rather I heard the real version from someone who wasn’t afraid of me finding it. I’m asking that person.

The corporal keyed it in without comment. ”Dusk tomorrow if the counter’s awake.”

The liaison’s lamp was the only one lit in the tent row. She let him in with the notebook open on the table and did not close it.

”You told me last night. Before the colonel, before Renner.” She looked at the page. ”I’ve had a day with it. I’m going to give you the one thing I have, and it’s smaller than you want.”

Give it.

”I don’t know the mechanism. I don’t know what he put in you or how. I’ve never been cleared to open your appendix, and I stopped asking to be a long time before you thought to.” She turned the notebook so he could read the page: a line in her hand with a date beside it, and the line was the man’s sentence, copied whole. ”But I know the stamp.”

Go on.

”Whatever it is, it’s open. Mabry gave you the word for that across a counter, and I’ve signed the stamp that routes it. I can’t tell you what’s inside you, Rook. I can tell you where it’s filed. It’s the only piece anybody in this camp has given you today that they’d put their name to.”

He looked at the line in her hand, and the date beside it, and the four digits on the first page he could not see from here and did not need to.

It’s more than the colonel gave me.

She closed the notebook, at last, and kept her hand on it. ”I’ve given you a filing category. I’m aware of what that says about the four of us.”

I asked the counter tonight. For the tier’s name.

She was still for a moment. ”Mabry.”

Mabry.

”Then somebody’s going to put her name to it too,” Sela said, ”and it’ll cost her more than it cost me to sign a slip I didn’t read. I hope you asked her the way you’d want to be asked.”

I asked her the way she asked me to.
