Subject Zero: Faceless

The wrongness arrived the same way it always had, as a pressure against the dull sense he’d learned to trust before he’d ever had a name for it, back when a closed door and eleven years of silence were the only teachers he’d had.

He was awake for it either way. Sleep had never been a thing his body asked of him, and the small hours of a Directorate posting offered nothing better to do with the extra time than sit with the window cracked and listen to a base settle into its own version of quiet. Tonight the quiet had a shape wrong enough to notice.

He counted the wrongness before he understood it. Three points along the perimeter fence, moving with a spacing too even to be an animal and too patient to be a drunk soldier finding the long way back to barracks. He put the Sight on all three out of the same habit that had once made him aim it at a sergeant’s profile in the back of a truck, a continent of paperwork ago, and got back what he’d learned to recognize as the worst kind of answer. Calm, of the specific grade men have when they are doing something they have done before and expect to do again. Purpose, worn smooth by rehearsal.

Three at the east fence. Professional. Not here for the compound.

He wrote it fast, one-handed, and reached, for the first time since the single flat test word that had opened it, for the Line thread Thorne had opened and never formally closed.

«Three hostiles, east perimeter, professional bearing. I’m already moving. Wake the gate before you wake me an escort.»

The reply came back in less than a breath, no time wasted on surprise at hearing from him this way. «Copied. Don’t wait on us.»

He went out the window rather than the door. The stop was still bolted into the frame. Six inches, and no farther, the ceiling someone else had set on how far his air could open. He gave it half a second’s decision before he put his palm flat against the sash and drove it outward with everything the movement had. The bolts sheared. The frame split along the stop’s seating and let go, and the window opened as far as he needed it to, which was all the way. He registered it even at speed, plain as the night air. Nobody on this base had touched that stop since the day somebody set it. Then he was down the wall rather than the stairs, because both were faster and because whoever was working that fence line had clearly done their homework on which doors got watched.

The first one he found alone at the fence’s weakest seam, working a Core-dampening tool against the ward — unhurried, practiced, clearly not the first ward he’d ever taken apart this way. The man carried no rifle raised. What he carried, slung low and ready, was a coiled restraint line and a short black baton that hummed at a pitch Rook recognized in his back teeth before his mind had finished placing where.

Same tools. Different fence.

He took the baton hand at the wrist rather than let the arc finish, the same clean break he’d delivered once in a ravine to a man who’d expected this to end quickly and cleanly, no gentler for the months between then and now. The man went down without firing anything, without calling out — trained, even in failure, not to make more noise than the job required.

The second came from an angle meant to be a flank rather than a fight, and closed into eleven years of a body that had learned to end a struggle fast and didn’t care how long it had been since the last time it was asked.

No Calibration. He’d decided that before he cleared the wall — Thorne’s provisional trust and Adair’s council question both sitting somewhere in the back of tonight’s math, whether or not either of them would ever know it. He went for the same lock he’d used on the first man.

The man got a hand free inside the lock and brought the baton up with it, and the pitch of the thing went through Rook’s jaw into his back teeth, and the arc it was carrying would have finished against his neck.

He took the throat instead, because it was there, and because his hands had been trained a long time ago by people who had not been interested in locks.

He felt it go. Not the sound, though there was a sound and he registered it. The give of a structure that had been holding and stopped holding, under the pads of two fingers, at a range of no distance at all.

The weight in his hands changed.

And the cold came up out of the contact, unasked, the way it had come once on a crest with a dead man’s bird already in his pocket. He had not reached for it. He was not being offered the chance to decline it.

A stairwell with a bad third step. Someone counting the steps out loud, cheerfully, in a language he had never heard spoken. The taste of something salted, which meant nothing to him and had meant a great deal to the man. A woman’s hand flat on the back of a chair.

And last, arriving with none of the warmth the others had come with and no more effort than any of them: a folded page with a room number written on it, in a hand that had never been anywhere near Halstead.

Third floor. East face. Second window from the stair.

Then it stopped, because the contact had ended and he was already two paces clear with nothing in his hands, and the whole of it had taken less time than the sound had needed to finish crossing the yard.

He stood over the man for a moment longer than the fight allowed him and did not have anywhere to put any of it.

The third ran rather than fought once the first two went down, putting himself into a line the Directorate’s own responding patrol closed on faster than the fence’s dark side could hide him. He went down under three converging rifles rather than Rook’s own hands, alive and restrained, shouting something with no information in it that stopped the moment the restraints closed. He went quiet in the same rehearsed, purpose-worn way the whole encounter had carried from its first minute.

Thorne reached the scene inside of four minutes.

”One dead, one breathing, one in custody.” Thorne crouched by the body. He turned back a torn shoulder seam with two careful fingers, the same economical motion Bram had once used over a ravine floor, half a year and a continent ago.

A quartered black diamond, stitched small and unglamorous, thread gone stiff with wear rather than fresh blood.

I’ve seen that mark before. The ravine, on the road out of the old compound. They brought rope that time too.

”So have I. Not in person — in an old case file, once, filed under a designation I never had reason to remember until tonight.” Thorne stood, and for a moment didn’t say anything else. ”This wasn’t remnant activity brushing up against Meridian’s perimeter by accident. This was aimed. At you, specifically, the same as the threat-assessment officer said someone eventually would be.”

They came with restraints, not rifles. Same as before.

”Same as before. Which means whatever intelligence they’re running on is current enough to know exactly where you sleep and how you’re worth more to them alive.”

They knew which window.

”That’s what I’d have reached in an hour. Your room assignment lives in twelve documents and every one of them is internal. Nobody scouts a third-floor window off a treeline.”

He had it written down. A folded page, a room number, in a hand that isn’t from this province.

Thorne stopped moving entirely. ”Where is the page.”

There isn’t one. Not on him.

He wrote the rest of it out there at the fence line rather than in an office in a week, because there was no version of leaving it out that he could stand here holding: what had come up out of the contact, and when, and that he had not asked for it, and that it had ended on its own when his hands came away.

Thorne read it twice. Somewhere behind them a medic said a number to a runner.

”Static.”

Static.

”On a man you killed with your hands. Not on the two you didn’t.” Thorne folded the slate shut and handed it back, which was not what Rook had expected him to do with it. ”So I have a fact I can’t source, can’t file, and can’t ignore. And you have a thing that happened to you rather than a thing you did. Keep those two apart tonight. By morning there’ll be people who want them to be the same.”

Major Renner asked me for this once.

”It’s in his closeout. I’ve read it.” He didn’t say anything further about it, which Rook took as the answer.

The base woke around them in stages. Lights along the yard coming up out of their fixed schedule for the first time since he’d arrived, a runner sprinting for the comms mast, the low, building hum of a perimeter taking itself seriously for the first time this posting had asked of it. Somewhere behind him, he heard Calen’s voice organizing a headcount, brisk and working past the surprise into the actual job.

The base is on alert. It wasn’t, an hour ago.

”It wasn’t,” Thorne agreed, and for once the flat, unhedged register carried something underneath it that hadn’t been there for the redaction gap, or the credential, or any of the smaller honest things he’d handed Rook since the archive wing. ”It has a name behind it now instead of a briefing-room word.”

He looked at the patch once more before a sheet went over the shoulder and the mark with it.

Three of them. One patch. The officer’s word for them, standing at my fence line instead of pinned to a wall map.

Sela reached him last, well after Thorne, well after Calen’s headcount had confirmed no one on the Directorate side had been hurt. Held back by whichever chain of command decided who got to a scene like this one first. She didn’t ask if he was all right.

”One dead. One breathing. One in custody.” She said it flatly, counting rather than reacting, and only once the count was done did something else surface underneath it. ”I heard the alert from my own quarters before anyone came to tell me. That’s the first time in this entire posting I’ve been glad my window faces the perimeter instead of the yard.”

I’m not hurt.

”I know. I checked twice before I let myself believe it.”

That isn’t the whole answer tonight. Thorne has the rest of it. You’ll have it before morning, and not from him.

”Then I’ll wait until you’ve got the words for it.” She looked past him, once, at the sheet. ”That’s the same mark from your own extraction. I recognize it from your file.”

It’s the same mark. Whoever sent it knows what that means to both of us.

She didn’t answer that with words. She stood beside him instead, close enough that the roof’s distance held steady one more night, and let the base finish waking up around the two of them.
