Subject Zero: Faceless

The truck that came up the corridor on the third morning after the picket was not one of the camp’s. Rook knew it from the berm before the gate corporal did. A light flatbed with the Core-housing set too far forward under the hood, so that its thrum sat wrong against the camp’s own. One of Bram’s men was driving it. Bram was in the bed with his rifle across his knees, and beside him, sitting upright with both hands resting on a case in his lap, was a man in a coat no army had issued.

Rook came down off the berm. His left leg answered late on the first step and on time on the third; the ache under the charge had settled since the aid tent into a bruise the size of a fist on the inside of his sternum, and Osei had put him back on the wall the evening before with the words ”You’re six, and six stands.”

The truck stopped at the command tent. Marrow came out before it had finished stopping. Bram climbed down over the tailgate, and the man in the coat stayed where he was with his hands on the case, and looked at the camp one tent at a time.

Then he looked at the mask, across forty yards of churned ground, and Rook felt the Sight go where his attention went before he had decided to send it.

He had expected the courier’s look. What came back was older than that, with less patience in it and no curiosity at all. A builder looking at a wall he built and has come back to find standing. Whoever this was had never been afraid of him, and had had years to learn to be.

”Corporal.” Marrow, at the tailgate. ”Report.”

Bram gave it standing, in the command tent, with the case on the map table between the stones and the man from the truck under guard beside the courier. Renner had come in behind Marrow. The liaison was in her chair.

”We lay up above the culvert two nights, on the major’s word that the gate being shut might move traffic onto the compound road. First night nothing. Second night, an hour before light, a truck comes out through the service gate with no lights. Driver, a rifleman in the cab, and him in the bed with that.” He nodded at the case. ”We stopped it at the culvert mouth, outside the wall, per the standing order. The rifleman went for his weapon and my man on the far side put him down. The driver ran for the gate and I let him go. I’m not taking a section into that building on a corporal’s judgment.”

”Correct,” Marrow said.

”He sat in the bed with his hands on the case and waited for us to come to him, and when I told him to get down he asked me which of us was in charge, and when I said I was he said that was unlikely, and got down.” Bram set his jaw. ”He’d been in the vault block. There’s mortar dust on his sleeves and on the case and none on his boots, so he was working at a wall above the floor. He knew which wall. Nobody scavenging goes to a wall.”

Renner unlatched the case and lifted the lid.

Three slates. Foundry stock. The same dark pane, thicker at the edge than a Meridian slate, that a colonel had once set in front of him in a records room with water damage bubbling the surface. These were dry, with grey dust in the seam where the pane met the frame.

”Out of a wall cavity,” Renner said. She woke the first with her thumb. Columns of four-digit numbers, a second column in a smaller hand beside each, and a heading at the top in the block capitals he had read once under a colonel’s lamp. She turned it to Marrow and then to the mask. ”Cycle-headed. Measurements, or that’s what they look like. I’ll need a day with them.” She set it back. ”Corporal. He said anything else?”

”He asked for him.” Bram did not look at the mask when he said it. ”By the other name, the one that isn’t on the order. I told him there was nobody in this camp by that name, and he said there would be, and to send for him anyway.”

Renner closed the case. ”A man who knows which wall doesn’t ride out the one gate we’re watching by accident, with a rifleman to spend. I’m holding that as open.” She looked at Marrow. ”I’d like him in a chair within the hour, before he’s decided what else to say.”

Renner set it up as she had set up the courier. The table, the lamp, the second chair she wouldn’t take, and Rook behind the prisoner’s shoulder out of his line of sight, with the slate. Bram stood inside the flap.

”Same terms,” Renner said, low, while the guards were outside. ”I ask, you read, one word an answer. He asked for you, so he’ll know where you are without turning around. Don’t give him anything he didn’t have when he sat down.”

Understood, he wrote.

The guards brought him in.

He was older than the courier by twenty years. Sixty or near it, spare, grey hair cut by somebody with clippers and no interest. The coat was a technician’s coat, or had been, with the pockets sewn shut. He sat where the guards put him and set his hands flat on the table as he had set them on the case, and looked at Renner, and then at the lamp, and did not turn his head.

”Your name,” Renner said.

Taken from NovelPhoenix, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

”You’ll have it in a file. You had me for an afternoon, once, at a collection point on the border, the month it ended. Somebody wrote it down then.” His voice was dry and level and pitched to reach the table and no further.

Rook’s hand stopped over the slate.

He had heard that voice for eleven years.

He had never seen the face that went with it. There had been nothing to see with, then, and the baseline sense had given him a warmth at a table’s edge and no more. But the voice had come first every morning of every one of those years, before anything else did, level and unhurried, reading a number aloud. He had stopped flinching at the number somewhere in the first year. He had not known until this moment that he had never stopped knowing the voice.

His hand was steady. He wrote nothing, because she had not asked him anything.

”The slates,” Renner said.

”Out of the vault block’s east wall. There were forty cavities. We needed three.”

”What’s on them.”

”Measurements. You’ve seen him do the thing on the road twice now. So had we, for years, under better conditions than yours, and we never got a size on it. You took the slates you could carry and left the rest in the walls. Your people never looked in the walls.”

True.

”Who is we.”

Silence. Under it, the Sight gave Rook a door closing without hurry — the courier’s closing, done by the hand that had taught it.

”What is Forty-Five.”

”The courier told you.”

”He told me it was never cancelled. Tell me what it is.”

”A continuation.” The man looked at the lamp. ”That’s the word on the order. You have the order. I’ve nothing to add to it that you’re cleared for.”

True. Rook wrote it and held the stylus still and understood that the man had just told Renner, to her face, that there was a clearance above hers, and had meant it as a courtesy.

Renner let the silence run, then changed the ground, as she had at Corvale.

”He walked out of your vault on his own legs. Meridian’s had him since. You built a device to stop what he does and he broke three of them in one night and put thirty of yours on the road. Whatever you had, you don’t have it any more.”

”Had.” The man weighed the word. ”You say had as if it were a thing done to him with a strap. You took the strap off him at your border and called that unleashed.” And then, without turning his head, in the voice that had read a number aloud every morning for eleven years: ”You were never unleashed, Zero. The leash is inside.”

The tent was quiet.

Renner did not look at the slate. ”Inside what.”

The door had closed, and this time Rook felt the full weight of the man settle behind it.

Rook wrote the word anyway, because she had asked for one word an answer and there had been an answer.

True.

Renner tried for a quarter of an hour by the lamp and got no sentence she could have written down. Then she said, ”Enough,” and the guards stood him up, and at the flap he stopped, with a guard’s hand on each arm, and spoke over his shoulder.

”I read you your number every morning for the best part of those years. You stopped flinching at it before the end of the first. We wrote that down as well.” A pause. ”You’d know my voice. I wondered whether they’d left you that.”

The guards took him out. Bram went after them.

Renner stood at the table with her hands on the chair’s back. ”All of it,” she said. ”Not one word this time. All of it.”

All of it was true. The wall, the slates, the collection point. The leash. He believes the last one as the courier believed Forty-Five. As a thing he did, not a thing he was told.

She read it, and read it again. ”He did.”

He believes he did it. What he did, the Sight can’t read.

”And the voice.”

Every morning. He read the cycle number before whatever the cycle was. I never had a face to put to it and I’d know it in a crowd.

Renner sat down in the second chair, which she had never taken in front of a prisoner, and pulled the lamp toward her.

”I sent his description south the moment the guards had him out, with the collection-point claim, to the Director. Thorne told me once, on paper, that he knew the diamond from an old case file under a designation he’d never had reason to remember. We’ll see what the word released looks like on a Meridian form.”

The reply came at dusk. The signals corporal brought it to Renner’s tent himself and laid it face-down and left.

[CORPS INTELLIGENCE — DIRECTORATE RELAY. RE: PRISONER, NORTHERN CORRIDOR. MATCH: ONE. CASE FILE — DOMINION TECHNICAL PERSONNEL, FOUNDRY PROGRAMME, SUBJECT HANDLING. PROCESSED: BORDER COLLECTION POINT, FINAL MONTH OF HOSTILITIES. DISPOSITION: RELEASED — NON-COMBATANT TECHNICAL STAFF. RELEASING AUTHORITY: PER FILE DESIGNATION. FILE DESIGNATION: [PERSONNEL CLASSIFICATION — RETIRED FROM ISSUE]. UNIT INSIGNIA NOTED IN FILE: QUARTERED DIAMOND, BLACK. — THORNE.]

Under it, in the corporal’s transcription of a second send, four lines that had not been on a form:

The file that carried the mark. I read it the night of the fence and I have read it again tonight. The man was released on the authority of his own file’s designation, and the designation is the only releasing authority the file records. I never had reason to remember it because it is not one anybody issues. Hold him. — T.

Renner read it and then turned it so the mask could, and waited.

Subject handling, he wrote.

”Yes.”

He handled me.

”That’s the file’s word. It’s the Foundry’s word first. And the woman in the chair in that command tent is your handler of record on every Meridian form you’ve ever had a name on. I heard the word land. So did you.”

He let it lie where it had landed.

”And released,” Renner said, ”by a category. One that was on the books that month and has been retired since, and that still had the authority, that month, to put a Foundry handler back on the road with a pass in his pocket.” She set the print down. ”The last time I saw a piece of Meridian paper answer to a category instead of a person, it was a routing line with two stamps on it, and I didn’t know what it meant then either.”

You’re saying it’s the same thing.

”I’m saying I’ve watched Meridian paper do this twice this month and I know what my hands want to do about it, and I’ve been told by a board what my hands are for.” She pulled the case toward her and took the first slate out. ”Thorne’s asked me to hold him. Marrow will want him south with the cylinder pieces and I’ll argue that he’s the only man on this front who can read these, and I’ll win, because it’s true.”

He asked for me.

”He’ll ask again. You’ll decide whether to go, and you’ll tell me first if you do.” She woke the slate with her thumb. ”He said you’d know his voice. I want that in your account before I write mine. Sit there and write it while I read this. Corps should have it from the man who heard it.”

He sat. She turned the lamp so it lit the slate on his knee as well as the one in her hands, and went back down her column with her thumb while he began.
