Subject Zero: Faceless

Three days north of the Directorate the trees stopped pretending to be a forest and became windbreaks, planted in rows by people who had meant to farm here, and then the rows stopped too. After that it was road. The corridor ran straight where the country allowed it and bent where it didn’t. A graded strip of packed stone with mile-posts at intervals, some of them new, some of them Dominion posts with the insignia chiselled off and a Meridian number painted over the scar.

The forward camp reached him before the convoy cleared the last rise. Engine noise doubling back off a slope, the Core-thrum of a generator picking up under the truck’s own, the particular pressure a few hundred people put into a stretch of country, and under it something sharp he had no name for, which was how places had always arrived to him. The liaison sat across from him in the truck bed with her slate on her knee. She had not written anything on it for an hour.

The camp was dug in. The Directorate had been built to be standing in twenty years; this was earthworks and revetments and tents pitched low behind berms, wire staked out in the pattern a working front used, Core-lit stanchions carrying a ward line that somebody walked and checked rather than trusted. Trucks sat under netting with their hoods toward the road. There was no garden. He counted rifles at the checkpoint out of an old habit and lost the count past thirty, which told him what he needed to know about the camp’s expectations for the week.

The corporal at the gate read the seal, then read the two names under it, and his attention came up to the mask for a moment before he decided against remarking on either. ”Command tent’s the one with the mast. Colonel’s expecting you.”

Colonel. He didn’t write it. The word did its own work.

Marrow was standing when they came in. He had been over the map table before the flap opened and had simply not sat down. Major Renner stood on the table’s far side with a stack of imagery squared under one hand. She looked up. Something crossed her face that could have been the beginning of a greeting and was put away before it finished.

”Ashfall-Zero.” Marrow used the designation as a heading. Then, after a pause long enough to be noticed: ”Rook. The order carries both, and I’m told the second is in use. I’ll use whichever one the paper in front of me needs, and you can assume nothing from which one it is.” He gestured at the bench across the table. ”Sit. This is a briefing. You’ve had enough reviews from me.”

Rook sat. The liaison stood at his shoulder rather than take the bench beside him, a choice Marrow saw and let pass.

”Operational command was left to be assigned on arrival because Corps hadn’t decided, when your order was cut, whether this was an intelligence action or a clearance. It’s decided. It’s mine.” Marrow said it without weight, a fact laid on the table with the others. ”Major Renner is Corps Intelligence lead. Her directorate board has sat. She was found to have exercised judgment contrary to tasking guidance, formally reprimanded, and retained on probationary tasking under my office — which means her recommendations come to me before they go anywhere else. You’d have assembled that sentence from a duty roster by tomorrow. Better it’s said.”

”It’s an accurate sentence,” Renner said. She kept her attention on the imagery. ”I’d have written it the same way.”

You said if Corps let you near me a second time we could argue about it properly.

He turned the slate toward her. She read it, and for the first time something in her face eased a fraction. ”Corps didn’t let me. Corps ran out of officers who’d read your file and were still willing to stand next to it. Different thing.” She squared the stack again. ”We’ll argue. Not today.”

Marrow turned to the liaison. ”Your attachment’s honored. You have a tent, a chair in this one when I say so, and access to him whenever he isn’t tasked. Your authority in this camp is nil. I’m saying it in front of you so that no sergeant has to.”

”Understood, Colonel.” The liaison’s voice stayed level. ”I’d have expected nothing else from your office.”

”Good.” Marrow reached under the map and brought out a folder. Thin, a Corps seal on its face and beneath it a second stamp Rook knew from a rehearsal slope at the Ninth Front: Asset Compliance. ”Before the ground. Your kit manifest lists a Core-suppression charge. Where is it.”

In the kit. Unclipped since the Directorate. Nobody there held its authorization, and there was no active front to wear it on.

”Correct on both counts, and the second is the only reason the first isn’t a violation.” Marrow opened the folder. ”Its authorization was Major Ferro’s. He held it on Aldern Ridge and never used it. At Corvale nobody in the field party held it at all. I noted that before the operation as an oversight rather than a decision, and I stand by the wording. Then the device rode on your chest at that landing zone, live and useless, keyed to a man a valley and a ridge line away, while you did something Sergeant Reyes had no column for.” He set a single sheet on the table and turned it so Rook could read it. ”Ferro’s authorization lapsed the day you left the Ninth Front and went unclaimed. I’m claiming it.”

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

[CORE-SUPPRESSION DEVICE — ASSET: ROOK / ASHFALL-ZERO. AUTHORIZATION TRANSFERRED: MAJ. FERRO (NINTH FRONT) → COL. MARROW (CORPS, OPERATIONAL COMMAND). COMPLIANCE COUNTERSIGNATURE: CAPT. DRAY. EFFECTIVE ON ARRIVAL.]

Dray’s signature sat under the Corps seal, small and careful. He looked at it longer than he looked at Marrow’s.

”Captain Dray countersigned yesterday, by relay. She attached a note I’m not required to read you and will anyway: that she would rather the device were held by an officer on the ground than by no one, and that her position on your Grade confirmation stands.” Marrow closed the folder. ”Get it out of the kit. Clip it where I can see it. Where you can see it.”

Rook unbuckled the kit’s outer pocket and found the thing by touch at the bottom, under Nell’s paper and the two pencils and a folded map of a children’s game. Matte grey, the size of a spent shell casing, the single recessed contact on one face. It had ridden in that pocket long enough that he had stopped counting it as a separate object. He clipped it to the kit strap over his sternum himself, contact facing outward.

Done.

”Done,” Marrow agreed. He looked at the charge rather than the mask. ”I want to be exact about what that is. It isn’t a threat — I don’t issue threats, I issue conditions. The condition is this: I am the officer on this ground who can end an active Core output on that strap, and I will, if I judge an output is about to cost me a soldier or an objective. I would rather you know whose hand it’s in than wonder. That’s the whole of it.”

It’s a leash.

Marrow read the word and didn’t argue with it. ”Every Classified asset on an active front wears one. Yours has had no name on the other end since Corvale. Now it has mine.” He straightened. ”Major. Show him the ground before the light goes.”

The observation post sat on the ridge north of camp, a scrape in the rock under a canvas hood with a map board bolted to a stake, reached by a path that had been walked enough in a week to have edges. Renner went up ahead of him and didn’t look back to see whether he kept pace, which he took as a courtesy.

The board held a sheet of the corridor with the camp’s position inked and re-inked as the survey improved. On its lower rail, held down by nothing, lay a brass compass on a worn lanyard. He knew the lanyard before he knew the compass. It had been unclipped from a dead man’s chest in a river and put into a breast pocket, and had ridden there through Corvale and a review board and however many months since. Two degrees west of true, its owner had said, and he’d known it, which was more than he could say for the map.

Renner saw him see it. She didn’t move it and didn’t speak to it.

”There,” she said, and pointed.

The valley opened below them on the corridor’s far side, a long shallow bowl with a river along its floor and the supply road running beside the river. A wall ran the valley’s near edge, low and continuous, and along it Core-lit stanchions stood close enough that their light would overlap once it was dark. A ward line, a real one, laid to keep something in or out for years. Behind the wall were buildings with roofs. A vehicle yard with trucks in rows. A tall structure near the valley’s center that he could not name from here and that his back teeth disliked before the rest of him had an opinion. Smoke from more than one stack. On the road, a convoy of four moving north at a working pace, unescorted, in daylight.

That isn’t a camp.

”No.” Renner had her own glass up. ”First confirmed sighting was ten days ago. A reconnaissance section attached to us out of your old extraction base walked the far ridge and counted heads. They stopped at two hundred and came back. That’s the number behind the handwritten line on your order. I wrote it. I didn’t sign it because I wasn’t sure, at the time, that Corps would let anything with my name on it reach you.”

He laid the sense that stood in for sight over the valley and let it take the shape of the place. The wall’s length, the stanchions’ spacing, a road that entered through a gate with a gatehouse. Everything about it assumed a next year.

The captive at the Directorate called it the staging ground.

”That’s their word. I’ve stopped using it.” Renner lowered the glass. ”Nobody’s leaving that valley. They’ve dug a ward line I’d need a battalion and a week to breach, they’re running supply on a schedule, and they’ve put a structure in the middle of it that my imagery analysts have three opinions about and no agreement.” She faced the mask. ”I called a thing a bet once, in front of you, and I liked the odds. This is the other kind. I don’t know what that building is. I know they had it up before they ever came over your fence.”

Marrow’s tasking.

”Neutralize the staging ground.” Renner gave it in Marrow’s cadence and did not pretend otherwise. ”Mine reads differently. I’m not cleared to tell you how yet, and you should know the two aren’t the same piece of paper.” She picked the compass up off the rail at last and put it in her breast pocket without looking at it, the motion habitual. ”You’ve seen the ground. That’s what the colonel asked for.”

Two hundred is where they stopped counting.

”Yes.”

Then the line on my order is a floor.

”It’s a floor,” Renner said. ”I’d have written at least if I’d had room.”

Below them the convoy of four reached the gatehouse and the gate opened for it without a pause, and the stanchions along the wall came up one by one as the dark arrived, each light reaching the next until the valley’s near edge was a single unbroken line from end to end. Renner watched it finish, then shouldered the glass and started down the path, and he went after her with the charge on his strap catching the ward light at every second step until the ridge’s shoulder took the valley out of sight.
