My Infinite System.

Silence wrapped the arena like an invisible fog.

The Combat Class students groaned softly where they lay sprawled across the fractured stage, some clutching bruised ribs, others rolling onto their sides with ragged gasps. Their weapons were scattered like fallen twigs under dawn light. The faint scent of burned mana and ozone drifted on the breeze.

Athena walked forward across the observation balcony, her black uniform coat swaying around her calves. Her violet eyes scanned the battlefield below with unreadable calm. She flicked her wrist, pulling up her tablet as numbers, names, and damage reports flickered across the blue projection. She tapped once to save the match record to Class Zero’s private files before dismissing the screen.

Beside her, William stood pale and silent, his knuckles white around the railing.

”That... was beyond what I expected,” he muttered, his voice thin and trembling with disbelief. Sweat dripped from his brow despite the morning chill. ”They’re first-years... how...?”

Athena didn’t answer him. Her eyes were still locked onto Lucian, who stood calmly at the stage center, one hand in his pocket, black hair drifting slightly in the breeze. His half-lidded eyes seemed empty, but she knew better.

He was observing everything.

Further down the balcony, Instructor Liane folded her arms over her pale blue robes, shaking her head softly. ”That wasn’t a battle. That was... a dismantling.”

Another instructor, the short bald man with burn-scarred knuckles, spat onto the stone beside him, his thick arms trembling slightly. ”They were born to kill,” he whispered, almost with reluctant respect. ”Training or not... my students wouldn’t last five seconds against that Lucian boy.”

”And yet,” said Liane, glancing at Athena with a faint smile, ”you all thought Class Zero was a waste of resources.”

William flinched. His eyes narrowed, anger rising to cover the sick chill in his stomach. ”This isn’t about resources. It’s about protocol. They’re unbalanced monsters—”

”That’s enough,” Athena cut in softly.

The instructors fell silent immediately. Her voice wasn’t loud. But it carried that quiet steel only a fool ignored.

She flicked her violet gaze across them, each instructor lowering their eyes in turn. Then she turned away, her boots clicking softly on the balcony stone as she began walking towards the stairs that led down to the arena control chamber.

”Where are you going?” William asked shakily.

She paused at the top of the stairs, not turning to look at him.

”To collect my reward.”

Then she descended, her braid swinging down her back.

—

Down on the arena floor, medics were already moving swiftly across the cracked stone stage, checking vitals, stabilising fractured limbs, and scanning concussed students with pale green mana fields. The Combat Class survivors watched silently as Athena approached, their gazes wary, some filled with quiet resentment, others simply defeated.

She ignored them all, stepping lightly over shattered shield fragments as she reached Class Zero.

Silas sat cross-legged on a fallen stone slab, chugging water from a dented metal bottle, sweat dripping from his thick neck. Reia crouched nearby, rewrapping her wrist brace with calm, precise movements, her golden circuits flickering faintly under her bangs. Vyn stood a few meters away, silent as always, her pale hand trailing faint violet mist that drifted into nothingness before reaching the stone.

Evelyn sat on her knees, breathing raggedly, her trembling fingers curling and uncurling around lightning that flickered weakly under her bruised skin. She didn’t look up as Athena approached.

Lucian remained standing at the center, his gaze half-lidded and unfocused, the rising sun framing him in gold. For a moment, Athena simply watched him, her eyes narrowing faintly in thought.

He didn’t acknowledge her.

”Class Zero,” she said softly.

Silas grunted, wiping sweat from his brow with the back of his forearm. Reia glanced up silently. Vyn didn’t move, only tilted her head ever so slightly.

Evelyn raised her eyes slowly, strands of red hair sticking to her sweat-slicked face. She swallowed hard, her throat dry and painful.

Athena’s gaze swept across them with quiet calculation. Then she flicked her wrist, her tablet projecting a faint blue screen mid-air. The words flickered for only a moment:

[Zenith Week – Senior Combat Class Slot: Transferred to Class Zero]

”Congratulations,” Athena said softly, her eyes returning to Lucian. ”You’ve earned it.”

Lucian didn’t react. His gaze remained distant, lost somewhere beyond her words. Athena watched him for a moment longer, searching his empty half-lidded eyes for something—anything—that might hint at what thoughts lay behind them.

She saw nothing.

”Zenith Week begins in five days,” she continued, turning her gaze to the others. ”Prepare accordingly. You’ll be representing the academy as its top potential hunters. Failure is not an option.”

Reia nodded once, her tired eyes flickering faint gold in acknowledgement. Silas grinned wide, slamming his fist into his palm with a dull echo. ”Finally... real training.”

Evelyn just bowed her head faintly, tears burning in her eyes as her heart trembled with silent relief. Zenith Week. For the first time... she wouldn’t be left behind.

Vyn remained silent, her grey eyes watching Athena’s face without expression.

Athena lowered her tablet, dismissing the projection with a flick of her wrist. She turned away, her braid drifting across her shoulder as she began walking back towards the arena tunnel. The crowd in the stands remained silent, watching her like they might watch a departing storm cloud.

As she reached the archway, William stood waiting, his arms crossed tight across his chest.

”You’ve made your point,” he muttered, his voice low and bitter. ”Now what? You let them run wild? Break protocol? Become weapons without discipline or loyalty?”

Athena paused beside him, her sharp violet gaze flicking up into his angry eyes.

”They are weapons,” she said softly. ”But a weapon is only as dangerous as the one who wields it.”

He clenched his jaw, veins bulging along his temple. ”And you think you can wield them... alone?”

She turned away, her eyes narrowing faintly as her boots clicked across the stone towards the distant instructor wing.

”I don’t need to,” she whispered under her breath, so quiet only she heard it. ”They will wield themselves.”

—

In the observation balcony above, Instructor Liane watched the departing figure with a faint smile curling her lips. She turned to the others.

”She was right,” she said softly. ”They’re not students anymore. They’re assets.”

”Assets... or threats,” said the bald instructor quietly.

She didn’t answer. Her eyes drifted back down to Class Zero.

Silas stood now, his arms crossed behind his head as he grinned at something Reia said under her breath. Reia only shook her head, her golden circuits flickering faintly as her gaze remained distant. Evelyn wiped tears from her cheeks, smiling shakily as Vyn placed a pale hand gently on her shoulder. Lucian remained standing alone, staring up into the blue sky, his expression empty and calm.

”They’re still just children,” Liane whispered softly, almost to herself. ”Children with god-killer eyes.”

—

Down on the fractured stage, Lucian closed his eyes as the faint morning breeze drifted across his sweat-damp hair.

Zenith Week... he thought. Finally... something interesting.

He exhaled softly, letting the wind wash over him as faint shadows flickered under his half-lidded eyes.

And in that quiet moment, with the broken stone stage beneath his feet and the rising sun framing his silhouette—

Lucian Black smiled.

The war hadn’t begun yet.

But its prelude... was beautiful.
