Chapter 55: Chapter 54: The Old Driver, a Beast of Burden

The three members of the city’s Cleaner squad stared at the ’traffic cops,’ who looked like they were facing a great enemy and ready to open fire at the slightest disagreement. They were completely baffled.

’What did we do to you?’

’Is this really necessary?!’

”Qiao, we usually mind our own business. Even if we don’t always see eye to eye, there’s no need to point your guns at me and my team, is there?”

”Lei Yang, you don’t have to be so sarcastic,” Qiao said angrily. The damage to his Spirit that He Xiaotian and the old driver had just inflicted on him could be called a critical hit.

’What happened to the most basic trust between people?’

’One second, he was completely cooperative, just like a model citizen.’

’The next, he turned hostile and just slipped away.’

”Did you guys just see a Bentley radiating a gloomy aura?” Lei Yang suddenly asked.

”?!” Qiao immediately flew into a rage. ’You have the nerve to ask me that? Do you get some sick pleasure from rubbing salt in my wounds?’

He didn’t even answer. With a wave of his hand, he gestured for them to be let go and turned to leave.

”...” Lei Yang was confused. ’Why did he just up and leave like that?’ He looked at the ’traffic cop’ standing by his window and asked quizzically, ”What’s with your captain today?”

”Brother Lei, the Bentley you mentioned—was there a masked man in it?”

”Yeah, you saw them?” Lei Yang nodded.

”That was a Ghost Car. The masked man got out and totally played our captain. He was really cooperative at first, then he said, ’I’ll show you a magic trick,’ and ran off carrying two boxes. He was fast as lightning; we couldn’t even try to chase him.”

’No wonder he looked so furious. So the hammer guy played him.’

”Alright, just be more careful next time. And pass a message to your captain for me: that masked man is some kind of folk eccentric. He eliminated an evil spirit before we got here. He’s not a bad guy.”

In a certain alley, after Lei Yang’s strange SUV headed toward the Pu River, He Xiaotian poked his head out.

’Those ’traffic cops’ were definitely in disguise.’

’Of course, they weren’t criminals, but some special department on a mission.’

’And those ’jade bullets’ they mentioned must be a weapon specifically for dealing with evil spirits.’

’Otherwise, there’s no way they would have dared to risk approaching and inspecting the car after their instruments detected that the old driver was a ghost.’

’So the question is, what kind of mission are they on?’

’Could I get a piece of the action?’

’If it’s something powerful, and I can land the final blow, wouldn’t I get a ton of Experience Points?!’

The more He Xiaotian thought about it, the more he couldn’t suppress his inner thrill-seeker.

He walked off carrying his two hammers, found an even more hidden alley, and took out a piece of Netherworld Currency to burn.

”BEEP BEEP!”

Five minutes later, the sound of a car horn came from the alley’s entrance.

”Boss, what is it now?”

The old driver had a miserable look on his face. ’I just went to sleep, and he summons me again.’

’Ghosts need to rest too!’

”There’s 10.5 million in this card. The PIN is 199508.”

”???” The old driver gripped the steering wheel, his entire ghostly being thrown into utter chaos.

’What the hell am I supposed to do with a real-world bank card?!’

”Go find a place that sells wild ginseng and buy me ten stalks. Remember, spend no more than 500,000. If you spend one cent over, I’ll smash your funerary urn.”

’So I’m not just your personal chauffeur, now I have to be your errand boy too.’

”I’ll give you twenty minutes. I trust you won’t disappoint me, will you?” He Xiaotian said, casually hefting the three-hundred-plus-pound iron hammer in his hand.

The old driver instantly remembered the BMW that had been folded in half, and he shivered in fear.

”Don’t you worry, Boss. I will definitely complete the mission within twenty minutes.”

But inside, he was sobbing silently. ’Where am I supposed to buy wild ginseng for you in the middle of the night?’

’Isn’t this just making things difficult for a ghost?’

He Xiaotian watched the Bentley drive off into the distance with a smile.

’Having a subordinate to order around is pretty great.’

As for whether the old driver would run off with the money, he wasn’t worried at all.

If he ever wanted to find him, he could just go to his grave.

Besides, a real-world bank card was no different from scrap paper to him.

Giving it to his family was out of the question; that would only bring disaster upon his own descendants!

He Xiaotian killed ghosts like he was slaughtering dogs. The old driver would have to be incredibly stupid to bring trouble to his family.

Twenty minutes later, the Bentley appeared at the mouth of the alley.

”Sir, here’s the wild ginseng you wanted. Exactly 500,000.”

The old driver said, handing over ten boxes and the bank card.

He looked incredibly weak, making one suspect that in addition to running the errand, he’d also gone for another ”full-service massage.”

”Thanks for the trouble.”

”No trouble, no trouble at all! Just say the word if you need anything.” The old driver put on an air of a knight willing to die for his lord, completely hiding the fact that while shopping, he had cordially cursed He Xiaotian’s entire family tree.

”Go get some rest. I might summon you again before dawn.”

”...”

’I knew it. There was a reason you were suddenly being so polite.’

’You’re still planning to use me.’

With a sorrowful expression, the old driver stepped on the gas and returned to his funerary urn.

It was all his fault for not being decisive enough. If he had just gone straight home the moment he met He Xiaotian, none of this ghost-saddening business would have happened.

’What have I done to deserve this!!’

’Why was I so confident back then that I could shake him off?’

Focusing his Spirit, he gently tapped the + sign.

The numbers 6000/6000 began to blur.

Qi Force surged wildly within his Dantian, like the raging, torrential waters of the Yangtze River.

Wherever it passed, his physical body was elevated to a new level, becoming even harder and tougher than before.

He Xiaotian opened a wooden box, took out a stalk of wild ginseng, and swallowed it in one gulp without even chewing.

’This is what it means to be rich and willful!’

”CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!”

His body began to transform at an astonishing rate. His muscles gradually swelled, and his height slowly increased.

An endless power filled his entire being, from head to toe.

Only after he had consumed five stalks of wild ginseng did the transformation from the ”Fire-refined Golden Body” finally stop.
