I Can Devour Spirits

The two were playing and laughing, when suddenly Zhu Xiaoqi came in and said Hu Huanhuan had arrived and wanted to see Duan Rong.

Duan Rong’s smile faded. He had been busy all along and had not yet seen Hu Huanhuan.

Xiao Yu had visited her twice. He heard from Xiao Yu that her recovery was almost complete, and she was in much better health.

Duan Rong stood up, touched Xiao Yu’s face casually, and then walked out with large strides.

Zhu Xiaoqi led Duan Rong into a room.

Upon stepping in, Duan Rong saw a woman wearing a bamboo hat with sheer veil, sitting there.

Zhu Xiaoqi served tea and then closed the door, retreating.

Hu Huanhuan stood up and bowed towards Duan Rong at the door, saying, ”Huanhuan pays respects to the Imperial Envoy!”

Duan Rong said, ”Master Hu, we are old acquaintances. No need for formalities!”

While saying this, Duan Rong took a seat and gestured for Hu Huanhuan to sit down as well.

Hu Huanhuan took out a document scroll from her sleeve, placed it on the table beside Duan Rong, and then retreated to a seat not far from Duan Rong.

Duan Rong glanced at the document on the table and said, ”Master Hu, what is the meaning of this?”

Hu Huanhuan’s visage under the bamboo hat sheer veil was faintly visible.

”Sir, you saved my life. This is a thirty percent share in Huaying Building, just a token of gratitude. It cannot repay even a millionth of your great kindness. I hope you will not disdain it!”

Duan Rong neither approved nor rejected but looked at Hu Huanhuan’s faintly visible face under the veil and suddenly said, ”Master Hu does not show her true face. Is it because there is an injury on the face?”

Duan Rong remembered that night, Bai Rong had whipped Hu Huanhuan’s face several times, causing the flesh to fester.

Upon hearing this, Hu Huanhuan shed two streams of clear tears and sighed, ”I was once reduced to a ruin and am now but uglier. It’s nothing worth worrying about!”

Duan Rong suddenly said, ”Master Hu, could you remove the veil and let me have a look?”

Duan Rong’s words were quite an offense.

Women always care a lot about their appearance. Knowing that Hu Huanhuan’s face was injured, asking her to remove the veil and show it was tantamount to making her embarrass herself.

Hu Huanhuan hesitated for a moment.

But she gently removed the bamboo hat and veil.

Hu Huanhuan, was once a famous courtesan in Prefecture City, though now older and faded in beauty, still had charming features and an outstanding demeanor.

But now, there were three finger-thick scars on her face, like centipedes crawling across her skin.

Tears hung on Hu Huanhuan’s face, and she softly said, ”At night, in the room, I dare not light the lamp. Seeing my face in the copper mirror is like seeing a ghost.”

Duan Rong stood up and went closer to Hu Huanhuan, scrutinizing the scars on her face.

Hu Huanhuan was finally enraged seeing Duan Rong staring at her.

”Sir, have you seen enough?”

Duan Rong noticed the angry and heroic expression in her eyes, realizing that Hu Huanhuan misunderstood him, so he said, ”Master Hu, do not fret! I mean no offense.”

After speaking, Duan Rong abruptly walked to a nearby desk, picked up a pen, and started writing.

Hu Huanhuan looked at Duan Rong suspiciously, gently reattached the bamboo hat and veil. She really did not want her appearance to be seen anymore.

After a short while of Hu Huanhuan putting on the hat, Duan Rong had finished writing. He took the paper and walked over to Hu Huanhuan, handing her the paper.

Hu Huanhuan, puzzled, took it and looked at it carefully.

Duan Rong said, ”This is a formula for an ointment. It should remove the scars on Master Hu’s face, but you need to persist in applying it for three months.”

Hu Huanhuan was overjoyed upon hearing this.

She had asked Gu Suxiu about her facial scars before; Gu Suxiu said they couldn’t be removed. Recently, she had consulted several renowned doctors nearby and got the same answer.

She had almost lost hope regarding the scars on her face, but Duan Rong unexpectedly told her they could be removed.

Duan Rong said, ”I am quite busy lately and don’t have time to prepare the medicine for you personally. But I have written down the preparation process in detail. You can give it to Doctor Gu and ask him to help prepare it.”

Hu Huanhuan was moved to tears, bowing and stating, ”The kindness of the Lord is hard to repay, even in death!”

Duan Rong helped her up and said, ”Master Hu, Mr. Shen has shown kindness to me. If he were in Xianggu, he would never stand by and let you suffer such a calamity without helping. Everything I am doing is on his behalf. Master Hu, if you want to thank someone, thank him.”

”Mr. Shen? Shen Ping?!” Hu Huanhuan’s eyebrows knitted suddenly.

Duan Rong nodded, ”Yes.”

Hu Huanhuan stood up, looked at Duan Rong and said, ”Sir, I hope we can have an agreement between us.”

”An agreement?”

Hu Huanhuan coldly said, ”That is to never mention that man with the surname Shen again. Since he’s gone, I consider him dead!”

With that, tears streamed down, and she bowed again, saying, ”Thank you, Lord, for the ointment. I bid farewell!”

Hu Huanhuan stood up and pushed the door open, leaving the room.

Duan Rong stood there and sighed softly. It seemed Hu Huanhuan would never forgive Shen Ping for leaving her.

Duan Rong turned, pocketed the document scroll from the table, and planned to take it to Xiao Yu to keep.

In the following days, behind-the-scenes owners of various powers came to see Duan Rong, as if Hu Huanhuan’s action was contagious, trying to offer him a share of one or two percent in their businesses. This included Jiang Qingyu’s and Tao Rong’s fathers.

Of course, Duan Rong refused them all, eventually deciding to shut the door to guests.
