I Can Devour Spirits

The temple priest, Xu Dongyang, escorted Wei Ziyan’s rickety carriage to the county government office’s gate, then rode back to his temple.

Before dawn, he got up and waited for Wei Ziyan outside the East City Gate. After dropping off Wei Ziyan, sleepiness overwhelmed him, making him very tired as he swayed back and forth on horseback, yawning incessantly.

Originally, he planned to return to the City God Temple and catch up on sleep.

But just as he reached the temple’s entrance, he saw three people already waiting in the dim morning light. Judging by their bags, they were probably traveling far and came to seek peace charms.

As he rode over, the three people had already seen him, so Xu Dongyang had to open the temple door and reluctantly start his business.

After preparing the peace charms and sending the three away, people continuously came to incense and draw lots since the temple door was open, forcing Xu Dongyang to pick up an almost bald duster and stand by the City God’s divine statue, dozing off.

Until lunchtime, the temple finally had no visitors.

Xu Dongyang didn’t care much; he directly locked the temple door and went inside for a deep sleep.

This sleep lasted the entire afternoon. He got up from bed, walked out, and stood in the backyard of the City God Temple, seeing the sun already leaning to the west.

Then suddenly, Xu Dongyang heard a chaotic noise outside.

”Someone was murdered!”

”It’s the Filthy Blood Sect! Shot dead in the street!”

Xu Dongyang’s heart skipped a beat. Although his cultivation in the Filthy Blood Divine Skill was decent, his martial arts were weak, so he was not arranged for the disguised guard task.

Xu Dongyang immediately dashed out of the City God Temple, seeing figures scurrying chaotically like a boiling pot on the streets.

He moved against the crowd, crouched at a narrow alley entrance, and looked ahead. He saw, not far from the street side, a headless corpse with blood streaks wriggling...

Near the bloody corpse lay a pitch-black Profound Iron Arrow on the ground!

Seeing the arrow, Xu Dongyang’s brow twitched. This arrow was identical to the one that killed Bai Rong last night!

”Something happened! Definitely something happened!”

Xu Dongyang felt panicked inside. Just then, he heard an eagle screeching from the high sky above!

He looked up and saw a large eagle circling in the air over Xianggu City, followed by four black dots jumping down from the circling eagle.

Xu Dongyang, responsible for secret communications within Xianggu County with various branch offices and halls, had seen a lot over the years.

”This is... Cloud Feather Fierce Eagle?!”

”It’s people from the Taiyi Sect!”

Xu Dongyang hid at the alley watching towards the county government office’s entrance, soon noticing Wei Ziyan surrounded by four people.

He hesitated for a moment, feeling this situation seemed overwhelmingly dangerous. Although he was reluctant to leave his homeland, escaping was ultimately crucial.

Xu Dongyang immediately returned to the City God Temple, packed some silver notes and valuables, preparing to flee.

He had already dug a dog hole at a city wall base not far from the City God Temple, blocked with a dead tree, originally for escaping purposes.

Xu Dongyang reached the city wall base, pulled the dead tree aside, revealing a hole. At that moment, chaotic hoofbeats roared like a sudden storm outside the city.

Xu Dongyang’s complexion changed. ”Bad! It’s too late!”

He swiftly squeezed into the hole, crawled out like a hurried monkey.

But once he emerged from the top, pushing aside some dead grass, a squad of armored soldiers with halberds surrounded the city, capturing him right on the spot.

Beside the crater where Wei Ziyan exploded on West Main Street.

Jiang Zhe, Bai Yuan, Lu Jin were still there sitting cross-legged, circulating Qi.

The nearby Iron Cavalry Leader, wearing heavy armor and holding a long halberd, suddenly stepped forward and asked with cupped fists: ”May I ask, who holds the Tiger Talisman?”

Upon hearing the words, Jiang Zhe’s breathing paused slightly; opening his eyes, his mouth again overflowed with blood.

Jiang Zhe reached into his chest, extracted something, and threw it to the Iron Cavalry Leader.

The leader caught it in his hand and matched it seamlessly with another half of the Tiger Talisman he held, instantly saluting Jiang Zhe: ”Captain commanding Original Field, reporting with a thousand iron cavalry!”

When Jiang Zhe and others arrived in Xianggu County, they had Cloud Feather Fierce Eagle wait in the wilderness outside the Prefecture City for an hour. Jiang Zhe specifically entered the city to meet the Yuanyang Prefecture Master, deploying a thousand iron cavalry to rush to Xianggu!

Jiang Zhe struggling to hold on, his eyes weary, said: ”Leader Original, I am heavily injured now! Unable to command you!”

Jiang Zhe said, then glanced at Duan Rong not far away, ”Duan Rong! Come over!”

Duan Rong’s eyes moved, walking over slowly.

Original Field glanced at Duan Rong, only seeing him in tattered clothes, oily hair, with a piece of scaby face, appearing like a beggar, yet carrying a knife and arrows, looking rather incongruous.

Jiang Zhe said: ”Leader Original, follow his command!”

Original Field furrowed his brows, saying nothing.

When Original Field arrived, Duan Rong was merely standing aside; he had never seen Duan Rong act, nor knew his identity.

Jiang Zhe naturally understood Original Field’s thoughts, then said: ”He is an outer disciple of the sect. This major case here was uncovered by him. The dozen headless bloody corpses on Xianggu street were all killed by his arrows!”

Upon Jiang Zhe’s words, not only did Original Field’s face change, even the seven or eight heavy-armored iron cavalry behind him showed altered expressions, looking at Duan Rong with some awe.

They had witnessed the dozen headless bloody corpses lining the street when rushing from the city gate.
