I Can Devour Spirits

Duan Rong looked at Yang Zhen, who was sitting opposite him, and poured him a cup of green tea.

Yang Zhen took a sip and asked casually, ”What do you want from me?”

Duan Rong smiled and said, ”You must have heard, right? Yuan Shun Escort Agency is now under my control.”

Yang Zhen nodded. He was already aware of this.

Yuan Shun Escort Agency in Xianggu County was quite a substantial enterprise. Actually, its most valuable asset was its reputation. Yuan Shun Escort Agency had successfully navigated many escort routes, each of which was a steady source of income.

Duan Rong said, ”Well, here’s the thing. I’m not trying to show off. I want to discuss something with you. Yuan Shun Escort Agency now lacks a Chief of the Escort, and I wonder if you’re interested? I’m just bringing it up. The decision to join is entirely yours. I’m not forcing you, since being a constable at the government office is also very promising.”

Yang Zhen saw the slightly nervous expression on Duan Rong’s face and suddenly smiled.

He understood that Duan Rong was concerned about his feelings and didn’t want him to overthink.

Yang Zhen said, ”I can go!”

Seeing Yang Zhen accept, Duan Rong felt a surge of joy.

He had thought it over carefully. He didn’t have the time to manage the Escort Agency’s affairs and needed someone trustworthy to run the business.

After contemplating, he found Yang Zhen to be the most suitable.

Although Yang Zhen was currently only at the Third Level of Inner Breath Realm, Duan Rong had assessed his cultivation, and as long as the medicinal supplements were provided along with guidance on some flaws in Yang Zhen’s practice, Yang Zhen could break through to the Fourth Level of Inner Breath Realm, possibly within half a year.

Actually, a constable’s income is about the same as that of an Escort Master, enough for daily expenses, but when it comes to medicinal supplements for cultivation, it’s quite tight. If Yang Zhen became the Chief of the Escort, the medicinal supplements would naturally follow.

Yang Zhen spoke with concern, ”But the Escort Agency is full of seasoned Jianghu fighters. I’m afraid that if I go, I won’t be able to hold the ground.”

Duan Rong replied, ”What are you afraid of? With me backing you, just go and work confidently.”

”Alright then.” Yang Zhen felt a slight tug at his heart as he saw Duan Rong’s eyes, firm and bright, emanating confidence from the depths.

”When can you conclude your affairs at the government office?”

”Three or four days, I guess! I’ll sort things out and let you know once the time is confirmed.”

Upon hearing this, Duan Rong nodded.

There was no need for pleasantries between the two; after finishing their conversation, they left the tea house.

Standing at the tea house entrance, Yang Zhen glanced at the sky and suddenly suggested, ”It’s still early; how about we grab some drinks?”

”Forget it, another day! I need to go back and have some white fungus soup.”

After speaking, Duan Rong sighed as if feeling discomfort, then left the tea house, heading along West Main Street towards the Escort Agency.

Yang Zhen stood there, watching Duan Rong’s figure in the dusk, suddenly realizing that over the past three years, his childhood friend’s temperament had indeed changed quite a bit. In the past, whenever they met, they would indulge in a drinking spree, often competing for the alcohol. This time, they only had tea.

However, Duan Rong entrusted him with managing such a substantial enterprise out of trust. Moreover, from Duan Rong’s demeanor and tone earlier, Yang Zhen could feel that Duan Rong still regarded him as a friend, making Yang Zhen feel quite gratified.

The next day, Yang Zhen went to the government office and directly informed the Clerk that he was going elsewhere, no longer planning to continue his work as a constable. Initially, the Clerk didn’t pay much attention to him, but upon hearing that Yang Zhen was going to Yuan Shun Escort Agency, his attitude changed greatly, and he helped Yang Zhen complete all the paperwork within the day.

Yang Zhen originally anticipated it would take three to four days, but unexpectedly, all the handover formalities were completed by that afternoon.

That night, in the Juyi Hall at the backyard of Yuan Shun Escort Agency, Duan Rong introduced Yang Zhen to Wang Zhuoyong, Zhao Meng, Xu Fuxian, and Ye Feng.

The four of them looked at each other in dismay!

Yang Zhen, originally a constable at the County Government Office, was regarded by them as just a young upstart. How could he qualify to be the Chief of the Escort at Yuan Shun Escort Agency?

But they were well aware that Yang Zhen represented Duan Rong.

No matter the circumstances, starting the next day, Yang Zhen began managing the Escort Agency’s operations as the Chief of the Escort.

The Escort Masters of the three escort teams all had a Martial Arts Realm level higher than his, and they were older and more experienced. Although they were courteous to him on the surface, deep down they looked down on him.

However, two days later, Duan Rong held a grand initiation ceremony for Yang Zhen at the Martial Arts Arena, introducing him to the brothers at the Escort Agency.

Moreover, during the following two weeks, Duan Rong personally accompanied Yang Zhen to familiarize him with various operations of the Agency, including the accounts department and business compositions of several escort teams.

Due to Duan Rong’s in-depth involvement, many people began subtly changing their attitude towards Yang Zhen, including the Escort Masters of the three major escort teams.

Yang Zhen, naturally intelligent and quite capable, with Duan Rong’s detailed explanation, quickly gained profound understanding of the Escort Agency’s operations.

A few days later, Yang Zhen suggested to Duan Rong that he wanted to accompany the escort teams on several missions.

Duan Rong was pleased to see Yang Zhen take such a keen interest in the Escort Agency’s affairs. Since Yang Zhen wished to accompany the escort teams, Duan Rong allowed him to go.

Once the Escort Agency’s affairs began taking shape, Duan Rong started preparing for his wedding.

He wasn’t particularly skilled in this area, so he often sought Xiao Yu’s advice.

That day, Duan Rong was with Xiao Yu in their room, going over the list of things to buy. As Xiao Yu jotted down items, she explained their uses to Duan Rong. Duan Rong occasionally teased her with a few jokes, making Xiao Yu laugh incessantly.
