I Can Devour Spirits

Duan Rong borrowed the lamplight, stared intently, only to find that those two seemed merely unconscious, different from the tragically dead gang members, and they were not injured.

Furthermore, they were wearing clothes of the Yuan Shun Escort Agency’s servants.

These two servants were the ones who previously hid behind the tombs and identified Duan Rong to Yu Wenlong. However, they had since been hiding on the periphery, and the tomb area was dimly lit, so Duan Rong hadn’t noticed them.

Duan Rong held the lamp and drove the vehicle, while Ruan Fengshan held Ruan Jing, sitting in the carriage, which swayed as it moved out of Chaotic Tomb Ridge toward the main road.

Ruan Fengshan held Ruan Jing in one arm, and with the other, he stroked the steel box containing a thousand catties of gold. He was uncertain whether the gold was more important or the son in his arms.

The escort vehicle soon turned onto the main road and immediately rode much more smoothly.

Ruan Jing, being a child, soon forgot the previous fears and started chattering, asking questions.

Ruan Jing seemed very curious about Duan Rong, asking him many questions.

”Where is your home? Do you prefer beef or chicken?...”

Duan Rong patiently answered each one.

”Brother Duan Rong, was it Brother Zhou An who sent you to rescue me?” Ruan Jing suddenly asked with twinkling eyes, looking seriously.

Upon hearing the question, Duan Rong’s heart suddenly skipped a beat.

Ruan Fengshan immediately grabbed Ruan Jing’s arm and asked, ”Jing’er, did Zhou An say anything to you?”

”Brother Zhou An told me to write, said that if I wrote, you would come to save me.”

”Where did he ask you to write?” Ruan Fengshan asked gravely.

Ruan Jing saw Ruan Fengshan’s face change and was somewhat afraid.

Ruan Fengshan noticed Ruan Jing’s fear on his little face, softened his grip, and gently comforted him, ”Jing’er, don’t be afraid! Tell Daddy, where did Zhou An ask you to write?”

”In that... dark... broken... filthy place...” Ruan Jing said hesitantly, unaware the place was called a cave.

Ruan Fengshan’s expression turned suddenly icy; the two unconscious servants on the escort vehicle were trusted aides usually working with Zhou An.

Ruan Fengshan already believed Zhou An was responsible, and Ruan Jing’s words confirmed it.

But Zhou An dared to meet Jing’er directly inside the cave, which means he never intended for Jing’er to survive from the start.

Ruan Fengshan’s gaze emitted a beast-like ferocity. ”That treacherous dog!”

The escort vehicle traveled on the dark main road, and suddenly a shadow appeared ahead, startling Duan Rong, who saw the person dressed in night clothes with a masked face.

”Don’t be afraid, it’s Mr. Luan!” Ruan Fengshan’s voice came from behind just as Duan Rong was about to react.

Luan Jingfu saw Ruan Fengshan and Duan Rong sitting in the vehicle, with Ruan Jing in Ruan Fengshan’s arms, and he quickly jumped onto the carriage!

Luan Jingfu clasped his hands towards Ruan Fengshan on the vehicle and said, ”Shopkeeper, I apologize for arriving late!”

”No problem, you didn’t alert the government constable who was setting the signal, did you?”

”No!” Luan Jingfu replied confidently.

Ruan Fengshan nodded, saying to Duan Rong, ”Head to the East Gate, we’ll enter the city from there!”

Duan Rong agreed, indicating Ruan Fengshan had also seen the cross-shaped Celestial Lantern rise from the city walls.

Duan Rong drove the vehicle, turned onto a path, heading towards the East Gate.

”Shopkeeper, who exactly is a threat to the young master?” Luan Jingfu asked while sitting on the vehicle, looking at Ruan Fengshan.

”It’s the Bitter Fate Gang!”

”Bitter Fate Gang?”

Ruan Fengshan explained the general situation to Luan Jingfu while on the vehicle.

Luan Jingfu’s gaze swept over the box on the vehicle, then fixed on Duan Rong’s profile.

Duan Rong was just an intern escort master, yet he managed to escape Luan Jingfu’s schemes multiple times, and possibly even Liu Ao had fallen by his hand.

This time, the young man managed to escape danger in a deadly situation and rescued Young Master Ruan Jing!

This was quite unsettling!

Luan Jingfu’s gaze gradually turned venomous, and Ruan Fengshan, sitting nearby, evidently noticed Luan Jingfu’s gaze towards Duan Rong.

Luan Jingfu suddenly realized Ruan Fengshan was observing him, slightly turned his head, and looked away from Duan Rong.

The vehicle entered the city from the East Gate, moving along West Main Street, clip-clopping away, and in the dim dawn, turned into Yuan Shun Escort Agency’s backyard.

By this time, Ruan Jing was asleep against Ruan Fengshan’s shoulder.

Once the vehicle entered the backyard, Ruan Fengshan threw the two unconscious servants on the ground, instructing two guards at the door, ”Watch these dead dogs for me!”

The two guards acknowledged the order.

Ruan Fengshan turned his head, looking at Duan Rong, saying, ”Duan Rong, go and tell Elder Xiao! Say to release the others who were imprisoned, except Zhou An.”

”Yes!” Duan Rong acknowledged the order and left.

”Mr. Luan, you store the gold in the sealed warehouse.” Ruan Fengshan said, watching Duan Rong leave and then addressing Luan Jingfu.

In the backyard’s sealed warehouse, only three people had the key; besides Ruan Fengshan himself and Xu Shouxian, who managed finances, the third key was held by Luan Jingfu, demonstrating Ruan Fengshan’s trust and reliance on Luan Jingfu.

Luan Jingfu, hearing this, prepared to take the vehicle to the sealed warehouse, but after walking a few steps, Ruan Fengshan called out to him again.

Luan Jingfu stopped and turned back, Ruan Fengshan stepped forward and said, ”I know you have some issues with Duan Rong. However, he has accomplished a great task by saving Jing’er, so I ask you to let him be in the future.”

Luan Jingfu was shocked, not expecting Ruan Fengshan to openly address it and even plead on behalf of Duan Rong. Respecting the Squad Leader, his expression changed, and he clasped his hands, ”I dare not!”

Ruan Fengshan noticed Luan Jingfu’s fear, gave a slight smile, and said, ”Store the gold, then take rest, I’ll handle the aftermath!”

”Yes!” Luan Jingfu respectfully replied and proceeded with the vehicle.

Ruan Fengshan carried the sleeping Jing’er and first went to Ma Chunying’s room.

Since Ruan Jing’s incident, Ma Chunying felt deeply guilty, crying daily, and upon seeing Ruan Jing return safely, she burst into tears of joy, waking Ruan Jing from his sleep, who immediately clung to her neck, refusing to let go.

Ruan Jing was raised by Ma Chunying from a young age, as Ruan Fengshan, being busy, couldn’t frequently see Ruan Jing. Moreover, Ruan Fengshan’s usual sternness made Ruan Jing somewhat afraid of him.

After experiencing life and death, seeing his birth mother allowed Ruan Jing to release the emotions buried within...

Ruan Fengshan exited the room, wiping away the tears from his eyes. His previously moved expression quickly turned fierce and terrifying. Gritting his teeth, he strode away, saying, ”A dog that bites its owner, what’s the use of keeping it?”
