Death… And Me

Chapter 3798: Incoming!

The twins were just about to take a look at the system when suddenly, that same voice from before echoed in their minds. It was different, as last time it came from the core of the octahedron. Now, it came from their own system.

*I wasn’t able... It was too much... the betrayal...*

Rean and Roan looked at each other. What was it? The Celestial Soul System? No, they felt it was different. But then, the system finally spoke again.

[Remaining echo removed.]

’An echo?’ Things felt weirder the longer it took, but the twins didn’t have the chance to check as the system continued.

*Pin!*

[The corrupted system was once used by its host to defend his Universe. Unfortunately, by the time the host gained meaningful power, things had progressed way too far. One might say that the Universe’s own attempt to defend itself was too late too.]

The system didn’t stop.

[The host of the corrupted system did everything he could, but not only were the enemy forces overwhelming, betrayal soon took place all over the Universe. In the end, in a final battle, the system’s host lost, and due to the outcome, the system itself was corrupted by the host’s regrets.]

[The dead host believed his Universe had ultimately been lost due to the greed of those who betrayed him. This sense of betrayal became the basis for the Banishing Light. The Banishing Light initially purged all ’intentions of betrayal’ of all living beings.]

[As a byproduct, such emotions had to be sealed somewhere, and this place had to be accessible in every single corner of the universe. Thus, the system sealed the fabric of space itself, locking all those emotions behind and guaranteeing no one would betray anyone else.]

[However, with the corrupted system’s host dead, no one remained who could control it. As a result, the Banishing Light evolved as time passed, and it began to include other emotions, not just the intention of betrayal. Greed, gluttony, wrath, envy, etc...]

[The Werdlem Empire, the very enemy who attacked this Universe back then, saw an opportunity in this change. They had the power to eliminate the corrupted system, but they did not do so. Instead, Universe D33 was transformed.]

[The Light of the Provider Religion was thus born, and those at the top were under direct control of the Werdlem Empire. Very few powers, and only their top members, are immune to the Banishing Light, thanks to the Werdlem Empire’s assistance.]

[The Werdlem Empire saw in Universe D33 the perfect laboratory. The corrupted system made everyone believe everyone, and especially the Light of the Provider. Due to the lack of destructive and doubtful emotions, no one questioned anything, even if they knew they would lose their lives.]

[Countless willing test subjects were now in the Werdlem Empire’s hands, where they could test whatever they wanted whenever they wanted. All kinds of Demon Beasts, Humanoids, and Spirits, as well as some rarer races, are free for use. Not only that, these same subjects would do their utmost to cooperate, regardless of how bad it could be for themselves, all believing they were working for the good of the Light.]

[Quest Update: With the acquisition of the corrupted system shard, the Celestial Soul System managed to create an access code. This code can be used to access the corrupted system’s main location. Hosts are required to go and obtain the corrupted system’s central core that keeps the Banishing Light running.]

The twins were quite surprised to hear all of that. The system usually provided a brief description of the quests, but this time it offered a much more detailed and lengthy one.

’Wait!’ Rean remembered something. ’It just said it got a shard of that corrupted system, right? The system said back then that acquiring any piece of the corrupted system would be enough to upgrade its functionalities and add new options to the reward list.’ (Chapter 3689)

[Nope! That was not what the system said.] Sister Orb’s voice appeared out of nowhere.

[I have to say, it is truly annoying when the system isolates me for these upgrades. Anyway, Rean, what the system said was that it required a piece of a different system for analysis. It never said a piece would give you new options in the system ability list.] (Chapter 3689)

Sister Orb continued. [It said in the reward description that ’New options based on the contributions of acquired system information’ would be added. However, this one system shard was not enough for an update of the system ability list.]

Rean sighed in disappointment. ’So all of this was for nothing?’

[First of all, we weren’t expecting to find anything related to that corrupted system in this place. You could say we were already pretty lucky to bump into it and acquire the information. Above all, this access code, which the system created from the information of the corrupted system shard, should prove quite helpful.]

[Last but not least, you were wondering what all that Purple Energy was used for. It was actually pretty good. The purple energy had the properties of the corrupted system, which was directly related to its processing power.]

[Do you remember when the Purple Energy invaded our system?] Sister Orb asked. The twins quickly nodded and waited for Sister Orb to continue. [At that moment, part of our own system’s processing power had been stolen, damaging it in the process. Now, however, not only has our system recovered, it has upgraded its processing power as well. It converted all that Dark Purple Energy into its own.]

That was indeed good news. The system’s processing power was directly related to its functionalities. For example, when Sister Orb hacked into formations, the system’s processing power was used, so the higher it was, the faster Sister Orb could hack them.

’No wonder it had no use for me,’ Celis commented. ’It was something made for systems, so a Demon Tree like me had nothing to do with it.’

Roan pondered about it. He had many questions still. ’That is good and all. However, we don’t have time for it.’ He then looked into the distance, making everyone follow his gaze.

After the Dark Purple Light disappeared, this place, which was already empty, was even emptier. That wasn’t the point, though. The point was that the twins’ group’s Divine Senses returned to normal, and Roan never stopped paying attention to his.

Right now, several Dark Clouds were coming in their direction!
