Death… And Me

Chapter 3775: Yes, I’m Being Selfish

Hura noticed she dropped her guard, taking some distance from Rean. ”W-What do you want? Why would Living Beings appear behind the Fabric of Space?”

Roan glanced at her. ”You seem to know quite a bit about the other side, different from Xian.”

Hura didn’t hide why. ”Obviously. The older you get, the better you piece together the memory fragments and emotions of the various living beings who discarded them.”

Xian was taken aback. ”So you know that we are born out of undesired emotions?”

Hura nodded, not very happy to tell Xian about that. ”I do. Sorry, Xian. I was planning to tell you when you developed a little more mentally. You see, not all Umbras can piece together enough memory fragments to reach this conclusion, but a few manage to do so. I was just lucky enough... or unlucky enough to manage that.”

Hura understood how Xian felt when he heard about it. After all, she passed by the same dilemma.

”Something is bothering me,” Rean couldn’t help but point out. ”You knew the moment you saw us that you were supposed to feel our intentions and souls, but you couldn’t. Xian was the same. He knew that he could feel our intentions and souls, and it wasn’t a surprise to him. Does that mean you have seen other Living Beings before?”

Roan’s attention was piqued. Actually, everyone in the Dimensional Realm paid attention as well. If Rean was right, they wouldn’t really need to venture deeper into the Umbral Field. Instead, it would be easier to wait for a Living Being to appear and use whatever method they are using to enter and leave this place. Of course, there was also a chance that those living beings ended up here by coincidence or accident, like the twins’ group.

”Not really,” Hura shook her head. ”The reason I know I can feel the living beings’ intentions is because we were born out of their own emotions. Emotions are also deeply connected to one’s soul, which makes it even easier to notice. You can just say we naturally know this, just like newborn mammals naturally know they need to suckle their mothers’ milk, even though they never did it before and were never told to. This knowledge, it’s just there...”

”In fact, we can feel the intention of other Umbras if we don’t protect our souls with our emotional energy. We simply have a high sensitivity towards them.” Hura didn’t know the twins called it Shadow Energy, so she continued to use the normal name for the energy.

Rean and Roan felt a little disappointed. For a moment, it was like they found some other way to leave this place, but that wasn’t the case. Of course, that didn’t mean no living beings came to this place. They highly doubted that the Light Idiots were unaware of this Umbral Field. First of all, both Rean and Roan believed there were even more of these Umbral Fields spread all over behind the Fabric of Space. Who is to say they wouldn’t meet some of such living beings deeper inside the Umbral Field?

Hura once again noticed she was back to being too friendly with Rean and Roan as the conversation progressed. ”You, stop it! I still think you might be hiding your real intentions from us somehow!”

Rean nodded in approval. ”See, Xian? That’s how you should be. Just because you can sense our intentions, it doesn’t mean we don’t know how to conceal or even mask them as something else to deceive you. You should follow your big sister’s example.”

Hura was speechless. Shouldn’t he have denied her words and insisted he wasn’t doing such a thing?

Xian, however, looked at Rean in doubt. ”So you are hiding yours?”

”Nope!” Rean shook his head.

”Then that’s fine!” Xian dropped his guard again.

Hura didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Well, she couldn’t cry to start with, so she would only be able to laugh. ”I told you to not believe them that easily, idiot!”

”But big sister, they even saved my life...” Xian insisted. ”Besides, they are super strong! They killed both Calanti and Tissal mega fast!”

”They what?!” Hura felt helpless. ”You said Calanti had just left, and that was already bad enough. Do you know what Calanti’s disappearance will cause? There will definitely be more of those Umbras coming now!” She even failed to notice the part where they could kill a Level Two Umbra with ease.

”Yes,” Rean nodded in an apologetic manner. ”That’s why a friend of ours will stay here for a while to help protect the weaker Umbras.”

Hura narrowed her eyes. ”Why am I feeling like there is a lot more to this story than you have told me so far?”

”Because there is,” Rean confirmed. Then, he proceeded to tell her everything they intended to do from here onwards.

It goes without saying that Hura didn’t like it even one bit! ”Alright, I can accept your friends’ help to stabilize things here for a while. But why should I let my little brother take such a dangerous journey? If a Level Three umbra finds him... I don’t even want to think about it.”

For that, neither Rean nor Roan had an answer. ”All we can say is that we will keep him as safe as possible. As I mentioned during my explanation, I have a skill that can keep us hidden from sight. You saw us doing that earlier... well, you didn’t, which is exactly the point.”

”It’s not a bad deal,” Roan commented. ”With our friend helping the little ones stay safe during our journey, they will get a better chance to accumulate emotional energy to increase their level. If those Level Two idiots appear to cause trouble, they will be eliminated without alerting anyone. Even better, only you would know about our friend’s presence, so no one would be able to connect it to the Umbras under your care.”

Hura crossed her arms. ”Hmph! In essence, you are asking me to sacrifice Xian for the sake of the others. Do you think I will agree with that?”

It was then that Xian stepped forward. ”You don’t need to, because I have already done so.” Xian approached Hura, grabbing her hand. ”Big Sister, that’s all I’ve always wanted, help the little ones... and especially you. This is my chance to do more than I could have ever done in many decades, maybe in the three centuries of life I have. I will not let this chance pass.”

Hura’s dark expression crumbled. Umbras can’t cry, but if they could, she would be full of tears at the moment. ”You truly don’t need to go that far. It is okay to be a little selfish.”

”Yes,” Xian nodded, this time looking a little more grown-up. ”And that’s why I’m being selfish now. I’m going with them.”
