Dawn Experiment

#Day 16 - 16:15

The corridor on H-Deck smelled of brine and antiseptic, but beneath it, something older. Blood, dried and re-wet, layered into the metal until it was part of the ship’s scent.

Carmona walked slowly, her heels clicking a rhythm she’d used a thousand times before. The two guards at the door straightened when they saw her, their faces carefully blank. She nodded once, and they stepped aside.

The door opened on darkness. Then a lamp flickered on, and she saw what she’d come to see.

Chen Wei hung from chains bolted to the ceiling, her arms stretched above her head, her toes barely touching the floor. The light caught the map of her body—bruises in shades of purple and black, burns that had healed into shiny pink scars, fresh cuts that still wept. Her hair had been cropped short, uneven, done with something that hadn’t been meant for cutting hair. Her eyes were open, but they didn’t track. Carmona had taken care of that weeks ago.

Behind her, a man moved. His rhythm was mechanical, inhuman, his eyes fixed on nothing. The vector—one of the three Carmona kept—served his purpose without thought, without will. His penis moved inside her, and Chen’s body jerked with each thrust, her bound hands the only thing keeping her upright. Blood had dried on her thighs, and fresh blood was beginning again, tracing dark lines down her legs.

Carmona circled slowly, taking her time. She stopped when she was facing Chen directly, close enough to see the fine tremor in the girl’s lips, the way her breath came in shallow, controlled gasps.

”In a few hours,” Carmona said, ”I’ll have two keys. And a vector.” She smiled. ”The Blue Oasis is finished.”

Chen didn’t respond. Her chest rose and fell, each breath measured, deliberate.

Carmona continued, circling again. ”You said I’d lose early. That my race would end before it began.” She laughed, soft, almost gentle. ”Just your fantasy. With three keys, four vectors—I’m ahead of everyone. The Commission will have to deal with me now. Those stupid men on their little ships...” She let the words hang.

Behind Chen, the vector’s rhythm quickened. Chen’s body tensed, her fingers curling into fists, but her face remained still.

Carmona stopped again. ”You’re wondering why I’m waiting. Why I don’t just take them now.”

Chen’s lips moved. Carmona leaned closer.

”Arnault would have been worth it,” Chen whispered. ”The vector they built. But he’s dead.”

Carmona’s smile tightened. ”They have something else. A replacement. A Chinese dockworker who shouldn’t exist.” She watched Chen’s face, waiting for a reaction. ”A Chinese vector. Can you imagine? All their planning, and they end up with a nobody from Shanghai.”

Chen’s blind eyes seemed to find Carmona’s face. Her lips curved—the smile Carmona had learned to hate. Small. Knowing. Utterly certain.

Carmona’s voice hardened. ”I’ll prepare him just for you. I wouldn’t want any part of him in me.”

”If it weren’t for Victoria,” Carmona said, ”I’d have taken them already. That woman has cost me more than you know.” She paused, watching Chen’s face. ”But she won’t save them. I’m doubling the assault. Forty of my best. Their security is nothing.”

The vector’s movements became rougher, more urgent. Chen’s breath caught, but she didn’t cry out. Her smile didn’t waver.

”You want to know something strange?” Carmona leaned close, her voice almost intimate. ”The Commission gave me their location. Pushed me toward them. Why would they want me to win so badly?” She shook her head. ”It doesn’t matter. An unarmed ship with two security guards—” She snapped her fingers. ”Gone.”

Chen’s smile widened, just a fraction.

”You’re already defeated,” she whispered. ”You just don’t know it yet.”

Carmona’s hand closed on Chen’s nipple. Twisted. Hard. Blood welled around her fingers, and Chen’s body arched, a sound escaping her throat that was almost a scream, but not quite.

When Carmona let go, Chen’s head dropped, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Carmona stared at the blood on her fingers, then at the girl who still wore that impossible smile.

Something was different. Carmona had stood in this room a dozen times, and every time before, Chen had begged. For the pain to stop. For death. For anything but this. But today—today there had been no begging. Only the smile. Only the certainty.

Carmona’s stomach tightened.

She snapped her fingers.

From the shadows, footsteps approached. Carlos stepped into the light—one of her vectors, stripped to the waist, his eyes as empty as the others. He looked at Chen, then at Carmona, waiting.

Carmona touched Chen’s face, wiping a drop of blood from her chin. ”Carlos will make your dreams sweeter.”

She walked to the door. Behind her, Chen’s laugh followed—thin, broken, but unmistakably a laugh. No plea. No cry for mercy. Just the laugh.

The door closed on it.

#Day 16 - 16:30

Later, on the bridge of the Red Solstice, the main screen showed the Blue Oasis as a white speck on the glittering afternoon sea, its wake a thin line dissolving into the vast blue. Renata stood at the tactical display, arms crossed, her face turned toward the image.

Carmona entered. Renata didn’t turn.

”The assault team is ready,” Renata said. ”We move in three hours.”

Carmona stood beside her, watching the screen. ”You’re not leading it.”

Renata’s jaw tightened. She turned. ”Why?”

Carmona didn’t answer. She looked at the blood still dried on her fingers, then closed her fist.

”I’m doubling the force. Forty, not twenty.”

Renata stared at her. ”For two security guards? What aren’t you telling me?”

Silence.

Renata’s eyes moved to Carmona’s hand, then back to her face. Something in her expression softened.

”That girl.” It wasn’t a question. ”She got into your head again.”

Carmona’s fist tightened. The dried blood flaked against her palm.

”You’re afraid,” Renata said quietly.

Carmona stepped closer, close enough that her face was inches from Renata’s. ”I’m afraid of no one. Not the Commission. Not that blind girl. Not anyone.”

She turned back to the screen. The Blue Oasis drifted, oblivious.

Renata studied her for a long moment. ”Then why forty?”

Carmona’s jaw tightened. When she spoke, her voice was low, almost to herself. ”She didn’t beg today.”

Renata’s eyes narrowed. ”What?”

”In the past, she begged. Every time. For me to stop. To kill her. To end it.” Carmona’s gaze was fixed on the white speck in the dark water. ”Today she just smiled. And told me I’d lose.”

The silence stretched. Renata let it.

”What do you want me to do with the rest of them?” she asked finally. ”Once we have the keys and the vector.”

Carmona considered. ”Don’t waste bullets on whores. Save them for better targets.”

She paused. Her eyes moved across the Blue Oasis’s dossier on the tactical display, stopping on a photograph. Young. Blonde. Aristocratic.

”Except her.” Carmona touched the image. ”Vivienne Laurent. Sophie’s daughter. Exceptionally well-connected, even now. The Commission has old loyalties.” She smiled, thin and cold. ”She could be useful. Trade for favors, when the new world takes shape.”

Renata nodded slowly. ”I’ll make sure she’s taken alive.”

Carmona turned back to the screen. The Blue Oasis drifted, unaware.

”Three hours,” she said to the empty bridge.

The Blue Oasis didn’t answer.
