Dawn Experiment

# Day 14 - 18:00

The storm rolled in off the North Atlantic with a velocity that could rattle old hulls into metal shrapnel, but the Blue Oasis only shifted a centimeter in her slipstream. Zhao noticed because he’d spent the whole day on the aft deck, alone except for the weather, the drag of the lures, and occasionally the sound of his own voice echoing across the wake.

It was the best day he’d had in a month.

He’d brought in sixteen good-sized fish, all mahi-mahi, green and gold and bleeding out neon onto the nonskid. He stacked them in a cooler, careful not to let them bruise, then retied the leaders and tossed the lines for one last pass. The ship’s pace was almost zero, a deliberate crawl to conserve fuel, but it made for easier fishing; the big ones didn’t spook as quickly.

Victoria had joined him at dawn, stripped down to nothing but skin, her clothes folded neatly on a deck chair as if nudity were the most practical fishing attire in the world, and insisted on a lesson. She watched everything, cracked jokes about “pole handling,” and when she finally set the hook herself, she let out a whoop that echoed all the way down the deck. He liked her best in these moments: unfiltered, predatory, somehow both dangerous and safe. She left at noon, flapping the fish’s tail at him as she ran to the bridge, leaving a trail of saltwater and sunscreen in her wake.

He didn’t mind being alone after. No shift administering treatment, no women writhing through viral flare-ups in the medical bay—just him, the wind, and the certainty of the line. Vivienne had insisted on taking his rotation today, her clinical voice masking something hungrier as she’d pulled him into the supply closet in the afternoon, hiking up her skirt with practiced efficiency. ”I need to practice proper application,” she’d said, guiding him inside her without protection. When she’d left, she’d straightened her clothes with the satisfaction of someone carrying exactly what she needed.

As the first arc of lightning forked across the horizon, he packed up the gear. He slung the cooler and the rods, and made his way forward, the deck lights pulsing in time with the ship’s heartbeat.

Every corridor was alive with prep for the storm. Security team in their fitted black, sleeves rolled, coiling rope or armoring the windows with blast shields. The engineers stalked the length of the engine room, heads bent, voices sharp, every third word a curse in three languages. The cleaning crew worked in pairs, vacuuming rainwater from the starboard catwalks, though Zhao doubted any of them knew how to even change a filter on the machines they pushed.

No more passengers now. Just crew: the misfits, the beautiful, the ones who’d once worked for the rich and now survived by being slightly better at this than anyone else.

He set his cooler at the kitchen’s back door, pounded twice on the frame, and the chefs descended. There were three of them—Ana with her tattooed forearms and nose ring gleaming as she smiled, flanked by two sous chefs: a former sushi expert and a pastry specialist who’d never filleted fish before the outbreak. They circled the cooler like wolves, inhaling the scent of fresh protein. ”You did good, Mr. Zhao,” Ana said, wiping her hands on her apron. Her eyes widened at the haul. ”Usually we get your two or three to stretch into the officers’ meals, but this...” She ran her fingers over the cooler’s edge, calculating. ”This is enough for everyone tonight. The whole crew. Real protein.” She looked up at him with something like reverence. ”First time since we left port.”She gestured to the rolling cart of seaweed, fungus, and hydroponic carrots. ”Can make stew tonight. Or maybe sashimi, for the brave ones.”

They went to work immediately. In the before-times, they would have filleted and de-boned for the owners, made perfect slivers for the Instagram crowd, and chucked the rest. Now, nothing was wasted. Bones, eyes, even the soft organs were split and sorted; broth, dumpling filler, even bait for tomorrow’s line. The heads were already simmering by the time Zhao left the kitchen, the smell of the sea overtaking even the bleach in the vents.

He wandered the ship for a while, letting the adrenaline from the day bleed out. He was happy, but it was a distant happiness, as if it belonged to someone else and he’d borrowed it for a few hours.

His next stop was the observation lounge. He’d been summoned for a “debrief,” though the word meant nothing here except a thin excuse for Vivienne to touch base outside protocol. He liked it; she was one of the few people who made him feel like a person and not a vector.

He reached the lounge a few minutes before dusk. No lights—Linh had told him earlier that they were running blackout until the storm passed, to avoid detection from any of the hungry ships still out there. Only the faint, blue glow of the tablet Vivienne was reading by, and the strobes from the storm. The room itself was empty, but he could feel her in the far corner, hunched on a sofa, knees up, lost in the math of some spreadsheet.

He knocked, soft. “You wanted to see me?”

She looked up, face already in a smile. “Zhao,” she said. “Perfect timing.”

He set his rods down and drifted over, trying not to look at the curve of her legs under the pencil skirt, or the way her blouse hung just a little off one shoulder. She smelled like the ocean, but sweeter, with the edge of disinfectant that all the officers wore now.

“You’re not even wet,” she said, appraising him.

He shrugged. “Fish don’t mind rain.”

Vivienne tucked the tablet under her thigh and patted the space beside her. “Sit?”

He did, sinking into the faux-leather, which was already warm from her body. For a while, neither of them spoke, the silence broken only by the periodic thunder and the low hum of the engines.

She broke first, turning to him with a look that was half challenge, half something else. “You know you’re making it hard for the rest of us to keep up,” she said.

He shrugged again, the words not quite landing. “It’s just fishing. No heroics.”

Vivienne snorted, then let the smile linger. “You caught sixteen fish. That’s heroic.” She nudged his arm with her shoulder, then leaned in, her hair brushing his jaw. “You make it look easy.”

He didn’t know how to answer, so he didn’t.

Instead, he asked, “How was your shift?”

She sighed, the weight of the day sliding off her. ”Not as exciting as yours, but effective.” She rubbed at a red mark on her wrist. ”That technique Aida showed me yesterday works better than I expected, but it’s... intense. You have to maintain eye contact the entire time.” She hesitated, voice dropping. ”The patient—she was a first-timer. Kept apologizing between sobs. I had to hold her hand through most of it.”

He remembered the morning, how Vivienne had insisted on taking his shift. How she’d prepped for it by dragging him into the back room, fucking him hard and fast on a pile of towels, not even waiting for him to undress all the way. It had been the first time she’d initiated; the urgency in her made him dizzy.

He remembered how she’d gone down on him after, cleaning up every drop like it was gold. She’d looked at him the entire time, eyes locked, never even blinking.

He wondered if she’d needed it, or if she just wanted to prove something.

“Thanks for taking the shift,” he said. “I owe you.”

She shook her head. “I volunteered. You needed a break.” She hesitated, searching for the right angle. “You looked like a corpse yesterday.”

He almost laughed, but caught the edge in her tone. “You’re not wrong,” he said. “I’m just… tired.”

They let the silence build again, the storm ratcheting up outside. Rain slapped against the glass, the horizon lost in blur.

She reached out, took his hand, and threaded their fingers together. It was almost mechanical, the gesture of a couple who’d done this a thousand times, but new to both of them.

She pulled his hand to her mouth, kissed the knuckles, then leaned her head on his shoulder. For a long while, neither spoke.

He finally said, “Do you ever miss it? The old world?”

She stiffened, then relaxed. “I miss knowing what to expect. I miss being bored.”

He nodded.

Vivienne turned her head, her lips grazing his shoulder. “I miss you,” she said, so quietly he almost didn’t hear.

He looked at her. “I’m right here.”

She smiled, but there was something in it—sadness, or fear, or just exhaustion. “That’s not what I meant.”

He waited.

She said, “I watch you, Zhao. Everyone does. They look at you like you’re going to save us. And you keep showing up, every day, even when you want to quit. I don’t know how you do it.”

He thought about the mornings he’d spent staring at the wall, the nights when he’d run the numbers and realized there was no way to save them all. He thought about the faces of the women who’d passed through the treatment room, the ones who cried, the ones who laughed, the ones who clung to him like he was the last solid thing in the world.

He thought about Aida, about Mei-Lin, about the rest. About how every touch left a scar.

“I don’t do anything special,” he said. “I just try not to fuck it up.”

Vivienne let the words hang, then shifted to straddle his lap, skirt riding up. She kissed him, slow at first, then harder, and he felt the old spark return. She ground against him, the heat building, her breath shallow in his ear.

“I want you,” she whispered, but it wasn’t a request.

He let her take the lead, hands on her hips, her thighs warm against his sides. She unbuttoned his shirt, then ran her nails down his chest, leaving red lines. She bit his neck, then kissed the spot, then bit again.

He could feel her wetness through the cotton, her body moving against him with a rhythm that was all hunger and none of the polish she wore in public.

She pulled his pants down, freed him, and guided him inside, no pause, no foreplay. She rode him hard, each motion urgent, desperate, as if she needed to outrun her own doubt.

He let her have it, matching her pace, fingers digging into her ass, pulling her down to take him deeper.

When she came, it was sudden and violent, her whole body clenching, eyes wide and wild. She didn’t scream, but her nails dug so hard into his shoulders that he bled.

He followed, letting go inside her, the relief more chemical than emotional.

They stayed that way, connected, for a long time. Her face pressed to his, the sweat drying on their skin.

She finally moved, climbed off, and tucked her legs under her, then reached for a towel to clean them both.

He watched her, still unsure if this was love or survival.

She sensed his gaze, looked up, and forced a smile. “Sorry,” she said. “I didn’t mean to be—” She broke off, searching for the word.

“Intense?” he supplied.

She nodded, embarrassed.

He leaned over, kissed her, soft. “I like intense.”

They dressed in silence, then sat together, staring at the black water beyond the window.

Zhao cleared his throat. ”Before... all this,” he gestured vaguely at the window, at the darkness beyond, ”would you have even looked at me?” The question had been sitting in his chest for weeks. ”I’m still just me. I change filters and catch fish and show up when scheduled.” He studied her face, searching for truth. ”Is it because I’m the only option? The last man standing?” His voice dropped. ”Or is there something else?”

Vivienne looked away, her fingers tracing the edge of the window frame. ”In the old world? We’d have passed each other in a café and never looked twice.” She gave a small, bitter laugh. ”I was... different then. Surrounded by people who measured worth in zeroes and connections.”

Her voice softened as she turned back to him. ”But I’ve been watching you. At first because I had to—we all did. Then because I wanted to.” She hesitated, vulnerability flickering across her face. ”That day with Captain Verne—seeing you like that—something changed for me.” Her cheeks flushed slightly. ”Maybe it was how you didn’t hesitate. Maybe it was after, when you fell asleep against me, looking so... human. Or maybe it was everything that happened between.” She shook her head, as if surprised by her own confession. ”I just know that suddenly, there you were. And I couldn’t look away anymore.”

She looked down at their still-joined hands. ”I volunteered for the treatment group even though my mother forbade it,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. ”And yes, I told myself it was for the greater good, for survival. But the truth that I never told her?” Her eyes met his. ”I just wanted more time with you.”

Vivienne’s gaze dropped to their hands. ”There’s something else,” she said, her voice hardening. ”Your... arrangement with Aida.” She twisted a ring on her finger. ”Before all this, she was my father’s ’special guest coordinator.’ We all knew what that meant.” Her lips curled with disgust. ”She’d bring these young women aboard, introduce them to his friends. The same men who’d shake my hand at dinner.” She looked up, eyes glittering. ”I watched her for years, Zhao. Charming everyone, always knowing exactly what to say, who to flatter. Always calculating.” She shook her head. ”I can’t trust someone like that. Not with you. Not with any of us.”

Vivienne’s eyes widened slightly, as if surprised by her own vehemence. She touched his wrist. ”I’m sorry. That was... more than I meant to say.” Her fingers tightened briefly on his skin. ”But if we’re going to be anything to each other, I can’t pretend. Not about this. Not about her.”

Vivienne’s eyes narrowed slightly. ”What exactly do you see in Aida?” she asked, her voice carefully controlled. ”She’s nearly twice your age. The things she’s done...” She shook her head. ”Someone like that can’t possibly understand you. Not really.”

Zhao’s jaw tightened. He took a breath, then another, visibly struggling to keep his voice level. ”I knew who Aida was before all this,” he finally said, looking down at his hands. ”I followed her career. I had her posters.” A flush crept up his neck. ”But that day in this very room—She saved me when I was ready to give up—that’s when everything changed. She didn’t have to risk herself for me. But she did.” His eyes met Vivienne’s, suddenly fierce. ”She’s saved more lives on this ship than anyone with her work in treatment. The old world is gone, Vivienne. All those labels, those judgments—what do they matter now? We’re just people trying to survive.”

Zhao’s eyes softened. ”The Aida I know showed me kindness when others saw only a stranger to fear. She reached for my hand when I was drowning in doubt.” His voice grew quiet but firm. ”That day, when the others would have thrown me overboard—she stood between me and them. How could I forget that?”

Vivienne studied Zhao’s face as he spoke, something shifting inside her. His defense of Aida wasn’t what she expected—not possessiveness or lust, but genuine respect. She found herself nodding slightly, reluctantly. The man before her wasn’t the boy she’d first judged him to be. Still, her stomach knotted at the thought of Aida’s hands on him, Aida’s mouth forming the same words she’d just whispered to him. Vivienne knew she could outshine Aida in a thousand ways, yet couldn’t deny the woman’s strange power over people—over Zhao. The new world’s arithmetic was brutal: survival meant sharing. But could she truly share him? And with her, of all people?

Vivienne’s eyes softened as she looked at him. He had become her anchor in this nightmare—more trusted than even her mother. The weight of the ship’s legacy pressed on her shoulders; every death felt like her personal failure. Treatment was the lifeline they all clung to, and she needed Zhao beside her to shoulder that burden. But Aida—Aida was a shadow between them, manipulating from her position in treatment. Vivienne saw herself as the only force standing between Aida’s influence and Zhao’s loyalty. Yet forcing him to choose was too great a risk. If he chose Aida instead... Vivienne would lose not just him, but her footing in this precarious new world. The thought hollowed her chest. Some things were worth sharing, even when it cut like glass.

Vivienne’s fingers curled into her palm. ”I can work with Aida,” she said finally, her voice tight. ”Just promise me some time that’s only ours.” Her eyes searched his. ”That’s all I’m asking for.” Zhao nodded slowly, his expression grave. ”We need to sit down—all of us—clear the air.” He traced the edge of the window with his fingertip. ”Tomorrow. Set boundaries. Find a way forward without tearing each other apart.” He turned to her, his gaze steady. ”This is bigger than what any of us want. The whole ship depends on us making this work.” His hand found hers. ”The old world’s gone. We can’t afford to carry its baggage with us.”

He kissed her hair. “Tomorrow. In the treatment suite. All of us.”

She squeezed his hand, then closed her eyes.

She wanted to tell him she was scared. Scared of the meeting, scared of them, scared of wanting something she might not be able to have. But the words wouldn’t come. They never did

They sat that way until the storm passed, the world outside a blank, howling void. When they finally got up to leave, the sea was smooth again, the clouds split by a single line of moonlight.

They walked together to the elevator, hands brushing but not quite touching, each step a little more certain than the last.

On deck, Zhao saw Mei-Lin waiting by the rail, her silhouette dark against the sky. She watched him, eyes curious, then gave a little wave.

He waved back, then turned to Vivienne. ”You want to join?”

She shook her head. ”I need to see my mother.” Her fingers lingered on his wrist, tightening slightly before releasing. Her eyes flicked toward Mei-Lin, then back to him.

He nodded, then kissed her, brief but sweet. When he pulled away, her eyes stayed on his face a moment too long.

He walked out to join Mei-Lin, the salt wind in his hair. She smiled, shy but sure, and slipped her hand into his.

Together, they watched the last of the lightning fade, the world turning soft and blue and new.

He thought about tomorrow, about the meeting, about the impossible project of making this work.

But for now, he was content.

It was enough.
