Dawn Experiment

# Day 9 - 15:24

The bridge was chaos by design: not the raw panic of a sinking ship, but the meticulous, adrenal order of a crew who’d spent their adult lives running toward disaster. Captain Verne held the command chair, one leg still wrapped in a blood-soaked bandage, jaw set against any suggestion that pain could slow her down. Linh and her assistant huddled over the helm and nav, eyes flicking between five screens and the old-fashioned glass ahead. Maggie stood at the forward port, pressed tight to the reinforced glass, every muscle coiled for the instant when violence might be called for. Kim, at comms, had patched the cracked display with electrical tape and was already shouting over the open channel.

Zhao entered at Vivienne’s side, and for the first time in hours he saw the world not as a story, or a crisis, or a place to escape, but as pure, unfiltered theater: the deck lights strobing red and amber; the ozone tang of overheated wires; the constant, deep tremor of the hull as Linh forced the Blue Oasis through curves no pleasure yacht was designed to withstand.

“Status?” he asked, voice nearly drowned by the pitch of the engines.

Maggie didn’t turn. “We’re about thirty seconds from dying, if that helps.”

Kim barked a laugh. “That’s generous. Try fifteen.”

Vivienne’s eyes darted to the main monitor, registering the orange blip trailing their vessel. ”What is that?”

Vivienne stepped closer to the monitors. ”What kind of ship? How long have we—”

”Infected corvette. Three-point-two nautical and closing,” Linh cut her off, not looking up, fingers dancing across navigation controls. Her jaw tightened. ”Six minutes.”

Vivienne blinked, confusion crossing her face. Zhao touched her elbow, voice low. ”We spotted it yesterday. Captain’s call to keep it quiet—prevent panic. Only bridge crew knew.”

Zhao edged forward, scanned the exterior cameras, and saw it: the infected ship, once a navy corvette, now pulsing with bio-luminescent orange veins along its hull, the mid-deck studded with writhing black tendrils. Its wake was a slurry of oil, blood, and fragments of what used to be life rafts.

Vivienne drew a slow breath. “What happens when it catches us?”

Linh answered without flinching, though her voice wavered slightly. ”It doesn’t ram. It... I think it wraps and boards. Those arms—they’re probably to anchor us for a full transfer? At least that’s my best guess from the footage we’ve seen.”

Linh’s eyes never left the navigation screen, but her lips curved into a half-smile. ”We keep moving. There’s a patch of wrecks and tankers up ahead—maybe a mile out.” Her fingers traced the route on the display, leaving smudges on the glass. ”It’s denser than anything on the charts. If we’re lucky, we lose them in the chaos.”

“Not if they cut us off,” said Kim, tapping the feed. “Look at the vector. They’re adjusting every time we do. It’s like they can see our move before we make it.”

Captain Verne’s voice was low and clear. “Then we make a move no one would try. Linh?”

Linh smiled, thin and satisfied. “I can do it. But it’s going to hurt.”

Vivienne turned to Zhao, voice pitched for his ears alone: “Tell me you trust them.”

He didn’t answer, but the look on his face was close enough.

Below deck, the first thing to go was the art. The old owner’s gallery lined the C-deck corridor, and each turn sent gilt frames and abstract canvases tumbling down in a noisy, expensive avalanche. A woman—the last one still running the galley—use a Kandinsky to wedge herself against a table as the ship heeled through thirty degrees, her free hand clutching a crate of protein bars that immediately exploded in all directions. On the next roll, she let the crate go and clamped onto the table’s steel edge, feet skidding along the greasy floor as the yacht shuddered and righted.

Down another level, things were worse. Every pitch sent supplies, chairs, even whole bodies skittering down the corridors. Aida had lashed herself and Mei-Lin to the stanchions in the treatment suite, but at the last turn Mei-Lin had lost grip on her end of the webbing and tumbled hard into a glass divider, shattering it on impact. Aida caught her before she hit the deck, but the damage was done—a gash on her forearm, blood weeping through her sleeve. Aida pressed a towel to the wound and rocked Mei-Lin gently, her voice a steady murmur that neither of them really believed.

Engineering was a war zone. Kim’s crew had sealed half the compartments for fear of flooding; every time the hull scraped a piece of floating debris, a new leak opened, saltwater spraying in tight, icy jets. Most of the team worked stripped to their shirts and underwear, sloshing knee-deep in freezing water as they wrestled with temporary patches and frantically bucketed the rest overboard.

The engine room, once the pride of the Blue Oasis, was now a sweltering cave of steam, oil, and blood from a half-dozen minor injuries. On the bulkhead, the thermal readout flickered dangerously close to red. Kim’s voice, half-choked by the comms static, barked orders in three languages as she jammed her elbow into a control box and prayed it would respond.

“This is not a pleasure yacht anymore!” she shouted. “We are running hot. If you see a fire, put it out. If you see a leak, patch it. No time for beauty—do it ugly and fast!”

* * *

The bridge braced for the first impact as Linh took them through a cluster of derelict tankers. On the forward camera, the world narrowed to a sliver of gray water and black, listing hulls—some still smoldering from old fires, others a tangle of melted steel and ghostly lifeboats. Linh took them in at twenty degrees heel, sliding the yacht across the surface like a missile skimming a pond. The hull screamed, deck plating groaning as the starboard side raked against the twisted bones of an abandoned container ship.

Kim’s voice cut in, furious: “What the hell are you doing up there? That was the hull!”

“Better the hull than the lungs,” said Linh, a tiny smile in her voice.

Vivienne gripped Zhao’s forearm, eyes wide and brilliant. “This isn’t going to hold,” she said, and Zhao could only nod, not trusting himself to speak.

Maggie clamped binoculars to her face and watched the pursuing ship as it careened through the debris field. “It’s not slowing. They’re eating every impact. Just… absorbing it.”

“They’ll breach themselves,” said Kim, “but it doesn’t matter. They only need to close.”

Zhao saw it, too—the way the infected corvette’s hull seemed to repair itself, oily flesh and viral growths knitting over cracks, new tendrils fanning out with every turn.

“Get ready,” said Captain Verne. “Next impact is a bad one.”

In the crew’s quarters, glass and crockery rained from overhead. Two of the stewards had barricaded themselves in the pantry, using their own bodies to wedge the fridge against the door. Every time the ship listed, they screamed and braced, then laughed—shrill, hysterical, but still alive. A rolling can of sardines struck one woman in the temple, and she cussed in four languages before booting it back toward the galley.

The medical team was little better. Every corridor run ended in bruised hips, twisted ankles, blood. Iqbal had abandoned the crash cart and now worked with only what she could carry in her pockets, dragging the injured into a makeshift triage bay that stank of bleach, sweat, and the coppery tang of terror.

Through it all, the Dawn Meter was a steady, traitorous pulse. Iqbal checked every patient, every wound, even her own, certain that the virus would find a way through the chaos. It always did.

Sophie Laurent watched the world end from the privacy of her old stateroom. She’d anchored herself against the writing desk with an improvised rope, sipped a glass of past-its-prime Sancerre, and waited for the sound of shattering glass to signal her end. She’d survived worse storms in her youth, and nothing about this one scared her—not even the way the air shimmered orange sometimes when she blinked, not even the cloying, familiar perfume of her dead ex-husband, which seemed to linger in every vent.

She counted the seconds between hull strikes, then, when it seemed safe, she tapped three times on her desk console. ”AURA, ready Protocol 719. Activate on my command if the situation deteriorates.” The system pulsed acknowledgment as she studied the ship’s status displays, damage reports scrolling across her screen in neat columns of red and amber. Her finger hovered over the command key, then withdrew. Not yet. She would wait and see.

On the bridge, the next hit came as predicted: the Blue Oasis, already running hard, slammed through a drifting warehouse barge that had once been loaded with luxury cars. The impact launched a Tesla S clean through the forward deck, where it embedded itself in the observation lounge with a cartoonish, metallic screech.

Vivienne watched the car punch through and said, with complete composure, “We’re definitely billing them for that.”

Captain Verne’s voice was as calm as the grave. “Status?”

Linh grinned, white-knuckled on the wheel. “Still alive.”

“Pursuer?”

Maggie watched the binoculars. “It’s closing. Two nautical miles. They grow a new tentacle every ten minutes. They’re going to try and grapple us.”

Kim’s voice was thin and reedy with adrenaline. “That means hull breach and direct infection. We’re out of chems below. If they make contact, we lose the crew.”

Verne looked to Zhao. “If it happens, you’re last line. Med bay, then lower corridor. Maggie and I handle the bridge.”

Zhao nodded, every muscle in his neck and back rigid with cold certainty.

Vivienne’s hand slid into his, small and impossibly warm.

The world outside the glass had gone fully mad: the wind howled, the sea hissed like boiling oil, and every surface shimmered with the blue-white fire of their own velocity.

But for one second, Zhao looked at the crew around him and felt—if not safe, then at least unalone.

And that was enough to keep going.

* * *

Somewhere deep in the ship, a klaxon wailed, then died mid-howl.

Aida cradled Mei-Lin’s head, rocked her gently as the bleeding slowed. “You’re okay,” she whispered. “We’re not dead yet.”

In the galley, a chef lashed herself to the stove and rescued three trays of bread from the verge of the oven. She cackled, wild and free, as the tray sizzled in the open air. “Eat!” she shouted to no one, “Eat before it’s ash!”

In the med bay, Iqbal set a woman’s dislocated shoulder back into the socket, then popped her own thumb back in place before wrapping it tight with gauze. The pain was distant, almost meaningless. She looked at the Dawn Meter, watched her number spike, and laughed. “Not yet,” she said to the meter. “Not yet.”

On the bridge, Linh took the ship through a gap in the burning graveyard just wide enough for a god to slip through. The hull shrieked in protest, but the glass held. The infected ship behind—ever closer, ever hungrier—mirrored their every turn, its bow now a tangle of bone and cable and unidentifiable meat.

Vivienne squeezed Zhao’s hand, eyes locked on the monitor.

He squeezed back, and for one wild second, he actually believed they might survive.

But the chase wasn’t over.

And the worst storm was still ahead.

# Day 9 - 16:32

The storm wasn’t waiting for them; it was already here. The bridge glass fogged with cold sweat, every surface slick under Zhao’s hands, even as he wiped and wiped. The main deck bucked and twisted, the groan of the hull now a constant animal shriek. He leaned against the nav panel, one eye on the forward cam, the other on the monitor showing the pursuit in digital relays of half a second each.

“They’re still closing,” Linh reported, voice so steady it bordered on hypnotic. “One point zero eight nautical miles. They’re not slowing for anything.”

Maggie, knuckles white on her binoculars: ”The damage is... repairing itself. But it’s struggling.”

Zhao squinted at the screen. On every frame, the infected ship took hits that should have killed it—a scrap barge sheared in two by the bow, a tangle of cargo nets wrapping the mast and then burning off in a plume of orange fire. The vessel shuddered with each impact, gashes appearing along its hull, but then metal and tissue knitted together in grotesque, incomplete patches. Through the tears, Zhao glimpsed the engine room glowing an unnatural red, pistons pumping at impossible speeds, the whole system pushed far beyond safety tolerances.

Kim, cussing from the comm, had jury-rigged a speaker so her updates came through in bursts. “Hull’s at seventy percent. If you want me to swim the rest, let me know now.”

Vivienne braced at Zhao’s elbow, both hands gripping the edge so hard her nails cracked. “We’re not going to make the strait,” she whispered. “Not at this rate.”

Zhao wanted to comfort her, but the words wouldn’t come. He watched Linh as she hunched over the wheel, eyes flicking from the forward glass to the aft cam, fingers twitching against the steel.

“I have an idea,” Linh announced, already gunning the throttle. “We need to get behind the burning tanker up ahead. That’s our only shot.”

Captain Verne, still stone, nodded once. “Do it.”

Linh didn’t blink. “Everyone brace. This is going to hurt.”

She shoved the throttle hard, and for three seconds the entire bridge vibrated at a new, higher frequency, the deck flexing underfoot. The Blue Oasis shot forward, a living thing desperate for escape.

The tanker loomed ahead, fire curling off the superstructure in sheets of blue and orange. The center section was already submerged, the bow and stern angled upward like the jaws of a dead whale. It should have been impassable. Linh aimed straight for the flame gap.

“Full speed?” Vivienne gasped.

“It’s the only way,” Linh said. “Trust me.”

Zhao did, even as his lungs seized with each new jolt.

At two hundred meters, he watched the glass start to ripple, the burning oil on the surface turning the world gold and sickly. At one hundred, Linh cranked the wheel, hard. The ship listed so far starboard Zhao thought he’d be thrown straight into the window, but somehow Linh held the line, and the hull scraped along the rising steel of the tanker’s antennae. The sound was worse than any scream—an industrial, bone-grinding screech that set his teeth on edge and made Maggie wince.

The bridge’s forward glass spiderwebbed but held. The engine room klaxons went berserk. Somewhere behind, Kim howled, “You are INSANE!”

They punched through the burning gap, paint bubbling on the exterior, the heat so intense the cabin’s oxygen vanished in a breathless instant. Zhao tasted metal, then smoke, then a wild burst of salt air as they emerged out the other side, battered but intact.

Linh didn’t look back. “Are we afloat?”

Kim’s voice, ragged, came in a second later: “Don’t ever do that again. But yes.”

For half a second, there was silence.

Then Maggie snapped her binoculars to her face, eyes wide. “They didn’t even slow down. They’re following us in.”

Zhao turned to the aft monitor. The infected corvette, flames licking up its hull, crashed into the tanker head-on. The impact was biblical. An entire section of the tanker collapsed, sending a blast of burning oil skyward. Chunks of steel, bone, and flesh rained into the sea. For a moment, the bridge went dark, every monitor blipping as the blast wave rolled over them.

But then, through the shuddering rear camera, Zhao saw it: the corvette, hull now blackened and split open, still moving. It birthed a new, gnarled bow from the burning wreckage and kept coming.

No one cheered this time.

“Brace again,” Linh said, just as the world outside went from fire to white.

A wave—a real, honest-to-god rogue—rose ahead, a wall of water two stories high. The Blue Oasis hit it dead on, the bow launching upward, tossing Zhao and Vivienne into the nav console. Zhao’s ribs hit hard, a crack, but he still managed to catch Vivienne’s arm before she went over.

Captain Verne stayed rooted to the seat, legs braced, hands locked to the armrests.

The ship hovered at the crest for a split-second, then slammed down the other side. Zhao’s vision blurred from the g-forces, then snapped back to crystal clarity as another alarm screamed.

“Brace!” Linh shouted again.

The wave, now behind them, hammered the pursuing ship. On the monitor, Zhao watched the monster ship vanish, then resurface, battered, hull caving in. Blood and black slurry poured from the wounds. For the first time, the pursuit seemed to falter.

On the bridge, someone started to laugh—a sharp, crazed sound, then a second, then all at once the entire crew was cheering. Even Linh, who never lost composure, grinned and punched the air.

But the victory didn’t last.

Linh squinted forward, then pointed. “Next one’s bigger. And it’s not just water.”

Zhao forced his eyes up. Through the cloud and spray, a new wall rose, this time bearing the wreck of a full-sized aircraft carrier, lifted by the force of the sea. The carrier was split down the middle, the two halves opening like a beached leviathan.

Linh’s plan was obvious: take the gap.

Zhao turned to Vivienne. She looked wild, alive, every trace of old pain replaced by raw, gleaming terror.

“You trust her?” he managed.

Vivienne’s eyes met his. “More than anyone.”

Linh punched the throttle, and Zhao felt the ship surge. He braced both arms around Vivienne as the Blue Oasis aimed for the crumbling canyon in the dead warship’s belly.

A final, juddering lurch, and then—

The world went black as the storm swallowed them whole.
