Dawn Experiment

# Day 9 - 17:09

For a second after impact, Zhao heard only the inside of his own skull—a perfect ringing emptiness, as if his head had been jammed into a bell at the exact moment of striking. When the world returned, it was loud, bright, and very, very wet.

The ship had not just punched through the gap—it had been swallowed and then spat out, the aft quarter torn almost open to daylight, the engine’s high whine replaced by the low, desperate rumble of a wounded animal. Alarms wailed on every deck. The air tasted of seawater, engine oil, and blood.

Zhao pulled himself up from the nav console, shoulder numb and slick with something warm. Vivienne was half on top of him, groaning, her hands clutching his shirt so tight the fabric bunched to his skin.

He looked around. The bridge was chaos: glass everywhere, Captain Verne’s chair flipped backward, Linh still at the helm but bent over, clutching her side. Maggie sprawled on the deck, breathing, eyes already open and scanning for threat.

No time for inventory. “Status?” Zhao croaked, his own voice hoarse with salt and smoke.

Linh, in a near-whisper: “We made it. Still afloat.”

“Kim,” Zhao barked, “engineering?”

Her voice cut through, ragged but alive: “Don’t even ask. We’re patching with our hands and asses down here.”

Vivienne, half-sobbing, started to laugh. “We did it. We’re alive.”

Zhao nodded, though he wasn’t sure.

* * *

The next hour was a blur. The storm pounded them like a god gone bored: wave after wave slamming the Blue Oasis, each one knocking another piece loose or flooding another corridor. Zhao spent it running between the bridge and every major station, patching lines, hauling bodies, bracing panels with anything that could serve as a lever.

The ship’s interior was unrecognizable. Every stairwell was a waterfall. The owner’s old gym was a swimming pool, the treadmills afloat and spinning wild with each new list. The crew quarters looked like a massacre—people scattered against walls, every surface streaked with red from head wounds and split skin. Mei-Lin clung to a railing, her arm double-wrapped in bloody towels, eyes dull and unblinking as Aida held her upright with one arm and jabbed a shot into her thigh with the other.

“Still with us?” Zhao asked, breathless.

Aida met his gaze, hard and unyielding. “She’s fine. Focus on the engine deck. They’re losing the patch.”

He nodded and ran.

Day 9: 18:56

On E-deck, Kim and two of her mechanics fought a literal tide. The hull had split at a seam, and seawater roared in through a fracture no one could reach from the inside. The best they could do was wedge panels and shoot expanding foam in the cracks, then hope the pumps could keep up with the inflow.

“Move, move, move!” Kim shouted, yanking Zhao forward by the collar. “We’re five seconds from losing this compartment. Grab the tool bin and follow me!”

He did. The water was up to his knees in seconds, warm and viscous with oil and debris, clinging to his skin like a living thing. Kim never stopped moving, her hands working the wrench, the drill, her fingers so blue they looked dead. Every so often, the engineer would curse under her breath in Korean, then snap orders to Zhao in English.

Somehow, the patch held. The water stopped rising. Kim leaned against the bulkhead, trembling, her smile wild and teeth-bared.

“If we make it to sunrise,” she said, “I’ll marry you.”

Zhao said, “You’ll have to fight Aida.”

Kim shrugged. “Polyamory is efficient.”

He didn’t have the strength to laugh.

# Day 10 - 5:00

By 05:00, the worst had passed. The bridge shuddered, but the alarms were gone. On every monitor, the endless, gray Atlantic stretched out, debris and fire marking the line between life and whatever waited behind.

Captain Verne, bandaged but unbroken, braced herself at the comm. “All hands. Report status.”

One by one, the survivors checked in. Every report was bad: injuries piling up in med; food scattered or lost; two cabins flooded and written off. The worst was the fresh water tank—badly holed, the stores already rationed to a fifth.

“We’re screwed,” Kim muttered from her seat at the back. “If anyone has a plan, I’d love to hear it.”

Linh, hands still shaking, brought up the nav console. “There is one thing. I saw it before the blackout. A ship, about three kilometers starboard. Looks abandoned, but intact. Could be supplies, could be help.”

Vivienne, perched on the edge of the table, blinked hard. “Or could be the thing that kills us.”

Linh smiled, humorless. “Then we have options.”

Verne said, “Details.”

Linh tapped keys, brought up the drone camera. The target floated low on the water, at a thirty degree heel, but the superstructure was mostly untouched. The hull gleamed black and blue, five decks high, with gold filigree marking the bow. The nameplate read VICTORIA.

“Looks like a clone of our ship,” Zhao said, awed.

“It is,” Kim replied. “The original sister-ship. Built for a British billionaire. Rowan Keur, I think.”

Vivienne made a noise. “I remember him. Famous in London—parties, money, scandal.”

Linh launched the drone. In seconds, the cam zipped across the rolling gray, closing on the Victoria. On the main deck, nothing moved. The lights were out, but thermal showed faint heat in the engine room. No orange, no viral trails, just a blip of life.

The bridge speakers crackled without prompting. AURA’s voice, cold and clean, filled the room: ”Alert: Vessel identified as vector ship Victoria. A vector ship is a vessel prepared and provisioned for the express purpose of repopulating or rebooting civilization post-catastrophe. Its crew and genetic stock are curated for resilience and diversity. Standard protocol is to avoid or neutralize competing vectors on sight.”

Zhao’s eyes widened. ”Competing vectors?”

Zhao felt the silence in the room.

”They’re not friends,” Kim said. ”They’re rivals. Maybe worse.”

Linh drummed the console with one finger, eyes fixed on the drone feed. ”Could be we’re the only ones left in this quadrant. Maybe that’s our only shot.” She tapped the screen, expanding the thermal overlay. ”Look here—I’m scanning deck by deck. Upper levels are cold. Dead cold.”

The drone dipped lower, its camera peering through shattered windows. Empty corridors, overturned furniture. No movement.

”Wait,” Maggie leaned in. ”There—on the lower deck. Engine room, maybe.”

A faint orange-yellow smudge pulsed on the screen, barely distinguishable from the ambient blue. Just one heat signature, weak and flickering like a dying ember.

Linh squinted at the thermal signature. ”Something’s alive down there.”

”Or someone,” Kim muttered. ”Hard to tell at this resolution.”

Maggie’s hand moved to her sidearm. ”Could be crawlers. AURA already warned us about competing vectors.”

”We’re down to one security personnel,” Verne said, rubbing her temple. ”If that ship’s infested—”

”We need supplies,” Kim cut in. ”Water, parts. We don’t have a choice.”

Zhao, light-headed, asked, ”Am I on the team?”

Vivienne’s fingers dug into his forearm. ”You stay here. If there’s a threat and we lose more people, you’re all that stands between us and extinction.”

He wanted to protest, but the truth of it was plain. He belonged to them now, the last barrier against mutation.

Verne checked her weapon. ”Two hours. Small team. We go prepared for crawlers, not survivors.”

# Day 10 - 7:27

Two hours later, the boarding party stood on the ruined deck, prepping the launch. Maggie, full tac suit and assault rifle; Kim, stripped to undershirt, every tool she could carry on her belt; Saanvi, face set in professional neutrality; and, surprisingly, the Captain herself, leg braced and hand steady on the rail.

Verne had insisted. “I know this ship better than any of you,” she said. “I’m going.”

They’d patched the lifeboat and rigged the transfer line. The crossing would take ten minutes, maybe less.

Maggie eyed Zhao as she loaded the gun. “If we don’t come back, torch the thing. Don’t let it take the ship.”

He nodded.

She paused, then reached out and squeezed his hand. “It was good knowing you, kid.”

He held her gaze, then smiled, thin and sincere. “You be back.”

They boarded the launch. Kim hit the ignition, and the tiny craft lurched away from the Blue Oasis, slicing through the ragged, oil-slick sea.

From the deck, Zhao watched them go—Maggie at the bow, eyes scanning every shadow; Kim steering with one hand and holding a wrench in the other; Verne upright in the center, a flag no storm could fell.

He felt Aida slide up next to him, her arm slipping around his waist.

“You scared?” she asked, voice low.

He didn’t answer.

Together, they watched the launch cut a silver line across the waves, toward whatever waited in the husk of the world’s last great yacht.

# Scene 4

The first step onto Victoria’s main deck was like sinking into a nightmare: the silence, the smell, the slow drift of haze through the ruined air. Maggie led, her boots squelching on the wet, black-red carpet; Captain Verne walked a half pace behind, one hand pressed tight to her bandaged thigh. Kim and Saanvi brought up the rear, every movement jerky with adrenaline. The gas masks made their voices hollow and inhuman.

The ship looked familiar, but everything was wrong. The grand staircase at the atrium was collapsed, the balustrade heaped with shattered glass and what looked like half a dozen empty gun mags. Maggie scanned the room—no movement, just the flutter of makeshift barricades: furniture, mattresses, even a baby grand piano canted on its side and stained dark.

Saanvi gagged behind her mask. “It smells like—”

“Like the world ended,” said the Captain, matter-of-fact.

Maggie kept her eyes open, letting the horror register but not dwell. She noticed patterns: the barricades weren’t for keeping things out. Some faced each other. Some circled inwards, like people had tried to keep something in.

Kim was first to spot the bullet holes. “Not crawlers” she said, pointing at a row of splintered mahogany. “Clean. Controlled. They shot each other.”

Maggie nodded, stepping over a tangle of blood-soaked sheets and the shattered remains of a champagne pyramid. “Civil war. Someone tried to stage a coup, maybe.”

Verne stopped in the middle of the atrium, head tilted. “No bodies.”

Saanvi shivered. “Maybe they got up and left.”

“Or someone cleaned up after.”

At the atrium’s center was the altar: a slab of white marble, now spattered with a halo of old blood, surrounded by the empty shells of spent candles and shattered wine bottles. On top, a gold-plated goblet and a blackened chef’s knife. Maggie circled it, checking for tripwires or clues.

Saanvi’s voice came through the comms, tinny: “Why the altar?”

Maggie shrugged, moving on. “Cult. Execution. Or just a place to die.”

They followed the path Linh had marked from the drone: a straight line through two salons, down a spiral stair, and into the ship’s lowest corridor. Here the air was thicker, the lights dead except for the red emergency strobes. Blood painted the walls, but in careful, almost artistic swaths—no wild sprays, just neat stripes as if someone had used a mop.

The heat signature was moving now, slow and deliberate. Kim checked her scanner. “It’s alive, whatever it is. But it’s not getting closer.”

The Captain’s breath rasped. “We do this careful. Kim, Saanvi—hold position at the junction. Maggie, with me.”

They reached the engine corridor and found the bodies.

Not dozens—just eight, arranged in a neat row, arms folded across chests, faces upturned. Maggie crouched, noting the precision: each crawler’s gray face peaceful despite the sunken eyes and curled lips. Every corpse wore remnants of female uniforms—crew, service, engineering—with a single, clean hole centered perfectly between the eyes. Maggie ran her finger along one wound edge, felt the professional angle of entry.

”Mercy kills,” she whispered. ”Someone who cared enough to make it quick.”

Verne knelt beside one, straightened the woman’s collar with unexpected tenderness. ”Executive Officer Liu. We served together once.”

Two bodies at the end twitched, fingers drumming an unconscious rhythm. Maggie’s hand moved to her weapon.

”Still alive,” Saanvi murmured. ”Transformation’s incomplete. Someone got to them before the virus finished.”

Maggie drew her pistol and put each one down, quick, a bullet behind the ear. She hesitated at the last body—a girl, maybe sixteen, face still soft with the look of sleep. For a moment, she didn’t fire.

Verne took the gun and finished the job herself.

“No half measures,” the Captain said.

The locked door to the engine room loomed at the corridor’s end, dented and blackened, but still holding. Kim, back at the junction, radioed: “We have movement. Something’s coming up behind us. Fast.”

Verne cursed, then motioned. “We breach the engine room. Maggie, you take point.”

It was as if the air got heavier. Maggie holstered her gun, checked the door for traps, then noticed the scuffed deck: heavy footprints, a streak of blood, the faintest trail of oily footprints leading to the side.

She smiled, grim. “There’s a service corridor. Same layout as Blue Oasis. If I were hiding, that’s where I’d go.”

They doubled back, found the entry—barely concealed behind a rolled rug and a tangle of power cables. The corridor was pitch black, every few meters a new twist or patch of slick, ancient grease. Maggie led, Verne behind, both barely breathing.

The survivor hit them at the elbow. One second, empty air; the next, a blur of flesh and plastic, hands clawing for the pistol at Maggie’s belt. Maggie moved on instinct, twisting into the blow, using the attacker’s momentum to throw her against the bulkhead. But the woman was stronger than she looked—blonde hair tied back in a tight, practical knot, sunken eyes, biceps like rebar under the skin. She landed hard, but came up faster, slamming Maggie into the metal with a force that knocked the air out of her.

Maggie fought back, barely, parrying a wild punch with her forearm. The attacker grabbed a broken pipe from the ground, swung, and only missed because the Captain tackled her at the waist. They crashed together, a tangle of gas masks and sweat and blood, rolling across the corridor in a blur of elbows and knees.

Maggie finally got her gun out, but the survivor kicked it down the corridor, then tried to strangle the Captain with her bare hands. Verne didn’t scream; she just bit down on the woman’s wrist, drew blood, and wrenched her arms free. The survivor headbutted her in the nose, then staggered back, breathing ragged.

Maggie aimed, but hesitated. “She’s not infected. Not yet.”

The Captain wiped blood from her face, voice calm. “Cuff her.”

The woman exhaled slowly, eyes clear and assessing. ”Fair enough,” she said, a hint of professional respect in her voice. ”I’d have done the same. Just don’t make me wait.”

Verne’s lips twitched. “Not today.”

They wrestled the woman into flex cuffs, then dragged her down the corridor. Her Dawn Meter glowed orange, but she didn’t twitch, didn’t show the spasm or rage of the viral stages. She walked, even limped, with the quiet of a soldier who’d already died once.

Maggie looked at her, saw the madness and the will, and shivered.

“Who are you?” she asked.

The woman smirked, wiped sweat from her face. “Name’s Victoria. Not a joke.”

The Captain’s eyes narrowed on Victoria’s orange Dawn Meter. ”Why kill your crew?”

Victoria’s gaze drifted to the corridor where the bodies lay with their perfect head wounds. ”You saw their fingers twitching. The virus was already in them.” She flexed her cuffed hands. ”Better a bullet than watching them tear each other apart when the change finished.”

They didn’t answer. Instead, they dragged her back to the main deck, where Kim and Saanvi waited, both pale but unhurt. Kim took one look at the woman and nodded, like she’d expected this.

“Let’s get out before the crawlers wake up,” Kim said.

They reached the launch, pushed off, and left the Victoria behind—a floating tomb, all secrets kept by the dead.

As they crossed the waves, the woman watched the Blue Oasis grow in the distance, the faintest smile on her lips.

Maggie watched her, and for the first time in years, felt afraid of what she’d brought aboard.

# Day 10 - 8:34

At the docking ramp, Zhao and Vivienne waited, flanked by Elena and three other medics. The instant the team hit the deck, Zhao saw it: the Captain limping and smeared with blood, Maggie with a broken knuckle, Kim drenched in sweat. And the stranger—tall and lean, handcuffed but standing with military poise—a predator at rest.

Zhao stepped forward. “You okay?”

Maggie grinned. “Did you save any dinner for us?”

He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “There’s still some bread left. You get first dibs.”

The Captain motioned to the medics. “Get her inside. Isolation until we know what we’re dealing with.”

Victoria didn’t protest as she was hustled below deck. She just watched Zhao, the other man, with a look equal parts curiosity and contempt. As she passed him, she leaned in—close enough that only he could hear—and whispered, ”So you’re the one they chose instead of him.”
