Chapter 14 - 14: Passing 3 Levels

”That killing rod is really merciless,” Fatty muttered to himself as he walked out of the camp office.

He had just arrived at the camp and already faced a harsh reprimand, leaving Fatty feeling a bit upset. Did the camp leader’s face belong to a curtain? One moment it’s rolled up, the next it’s let down. This Special Reconnaissance Battalion, does this guy mean we have to do the Special Soldier’s job as well? This meal isn’t easy to swallow.

Walking up to his shabby mecha, he looked up and saw a muscular, short Lieutenant with a tiger’s back and a bear’s waist striding towards him with a smile.

”You’re the new Deputy Company Commander, Lieutenant Tian, right? Welcome! I’m Rashid, the Commander of the First Company,” the burly short man extended his muscular arm, grabbed Fatty’s hand, and shook it hard.

If not for the months of training in the gravity room, Fatty would have been shaken to pieces by this guy.

Fatty pulled out his hand and saluted, his face full of smiles as he said, ”Thank you. I’m new here, so please feel free to give me instructions, I guarantee obedience.”

Seeing Fatty’s unchanged expression and nonchalant demeanor, Rashid quietly admired him. He laughed loudly, patted Fatty’s shoulder, and said, ”Here, we’re brothers who live and die together. Instructions? Forget it. You got a reprimand from the camp leader, right? Haha.”

Rashid was a straightforward person. Without waiting for Fatty to speak, he grabbed his hand and started walking, saying, ”Don’t take it to heart, the camp leader is a simple-minded person. His only trick is the killing rod. Everyone who arrives here gets a reprimand from him. Come on, I’ll show you around the company headquarters first, get familiar with the place.”

Having no choice, Fatty left his mecha behind and followed Rashid, listening to him chatter away, ”We’ve been hearing that our company would get a new Deputy Commander who’d earned a first-class merit, and we’ve all been looking forward to it. Finally, you’re here. There’s going to be a battle soon. Damn, the Imperial Army’s Special Forces have been particularly unruly lately, they wiped out one of our forward logistics posts, killing and injuring over two hundred people, including civilian staff and guards. They’re getting too bold. Now, large numbers of troops on both sides are gathering here. Once we break through the passage west of Kato, we can split the Imperial Army into two. The higher-ups have ordered us to scout the enemy’s situation thoroughly, and if possible, destroy a couple of their command centers to dampen their spirits.”

”One command center is hard enough, now two or three? These headquarters are heavily guarded, far from the front line, surrounded by their troops. Decapitation strikes are simple to say but hard to execute,” Fatty pondered as he listened.

”Our battalion is the Federation’s only Special Reconnaissance Battalion. Maintaining this structure has taken considerable effort from successive division commanders of the 16th Division. The military department has tried to disband us several times, but our battalion, born out of the independence war, remains a heroic unit. The reconnaissance teams under the several mechanical battalions and the special forces camp directly under the division command have long resented us. They think we do the same work, yet we have better equipment and benefits. The special forces camp guys hate us for blocking their way. Most armored divisions have their special forces group command structure, but because of our Special Reconnaissance Battalion, the special forces structure in our 16th Division has remained at the battalion level. If they outdo us, they might disband our battalion, and their special forces camp could be upgraded to a special forces group. Hell, our camp leader is even planning to merge them into our battalion, those ignorant fools.”

Rashid, lacking the awareness of a grassroots officer, spoke rapidly, pouring out the whole situation of the Special Reconnaissance Battalion to Fatty within minutes, leaving him dizzy.

Speaking, they arrived at the company headquarters, a small camp consisting of a few rows of temporary barracks and two training grounds. Various mechas and vehicles were parked around the camp, including several fighter jets. At the barracks’ entrance, three reconnaissance platoon leaders had gathered the company, waiting. Just as Fatty was about to follow Rashid inside, he was stopped by the short man.

Rashid gave a peculiar smile and said, ”We’re Special Reconnaissance Soldiers and have some rules. You’re the new Deputy Company Commander assigned by the higher-ups. On the battlefield, the lives of the brothers are in our hands. A commander who lacks skill burdens the entire army. You must pass the test, otherwise, you can’t enter. Bear with me, brother.” With that, he straightened up and left Tian Xingjian at the door, joining the three platoon leaders, waiting to watch the show.

”Damn, this lousy reconnaissance camp from the camp leader to the company commander are all turncoat bastards,” Fatty thought. With these guys who only respect strength, talking slick won’t help. Only by earning their recognition will he gain their respect.

”Alright, I’ll risk my life to accompany the gentlemen today. Lay the challenge on me.” Since they didn’t show any courtesy, he decided not to hide his abilities. He must showcase his full strength today; otherwise, failing to pass would not only be embarrassing, but he would also be the first to be abandoned in critical moments.

A Black platoon leader at the front laughed, showing a row of white teeth, and said, ”The brothers want to first see the Deputy Commander’s hand-to-hand combat skills.” With that, the platoon leader stepped out, took off his outer clothes, revealing muscular physique, his black skin making his body look as strong as steel.

Tian Xingjian walked up to the platoon leader, squeezed his iron-like biceps, and exclaimed, ”Your explosiveness must be strong.” The Black platoon leader laughed and said, ”Look out for my right punch, it’s 500 kilograms of force. Getting hit by it is no joke.”

Fatty exclaimed again and asked, ”You must have a strong resistance to hits too, right?” The Black platoon leader laughed and nodded.

”Wham!” Fatty suddenly jumped up and land a high kick on the Black man’s head. The Black platoon leader spun 360 degrees in the air like a broken sandbag and fell to the ground, unconscious.

Fatty patted his pants and displayed a naive smile, ”Just a bit slow to react.”

Although it was somewhat despicable, it was one of Fatty’s fighting techniques in the first place, so it wasn’t considered against the rules. Besides, this Black platoon leader Barak is the top-ranked person in the Special Reconnaissance Battalion for free fighting, and no one has ever brought him down in one move, even in a sneak attack!

Moreover, everyone knew that Barak’s reaction was not slow.

It’s just that Fatty was too fast, and his expression was too deceiving.

It seems that this sleazy Fatty is not as easy to bully as imagined. Some even felt a sense of trepidation at the thought of this smiling assassin becoming their superior.

Two soldiers came running, carried the unconscious Black platoon leader away. Rashid and the remaining two platoon leaders exchanged glances, it seemed this new deputy company commander was not as incompetent as his obese appearance suggested.

”Haha, brother, you have some real skills! That whip kick was as swift as a shooting star, quick, accurate, and ruthless! With that skill, you totally deserve to enter our Special Reconnaissance Battalion!!” After a moment of silence, it was Rashid who broke the ice with a laugh, his ability to change his expression was unparalleled.

”Let’s go, let’s go to the shooting range and let these little rascals who don’t know their limits see your shooting skills, let them see how the gun is played.” Rashid was flattering Fatty, but there was a hidden edge in his words, clearly the first competition had pissed him off.

Originally wanting to teach Fatty a lesson, he ended up being taken down by a single kick from Fatty. Though there wasn’t any deep hatred, it did make Rashid lose face, and he was determined to win against Fatty in the next two competitions. He could not let this Fatty look down upon the Special Reconnaissance Battalion even before entering the gate.

In the open training ground, there were two tables, on which various gun parts were piled up, and two targets with a diameter of less than thirty centimeters were placed two hundred meters away. From this side, the center of the target looked as small as a sesame seed.

A small, thin Corporal came out, the competition rules were simple, five types of gun parts mixed together, assemble the guns and shoot with each of the five guns, whoever takes the shortest time and shoots the most accurately wins.

The one sent to compete with Fatty was the previous year’s champion of the 16th Armored Division in this event, the platoon leader of the second platoon, Torick.

With a whistle, the competition started, Torick moved at his fastest speed. In this field, he was confident that no one was faster or more accurate than him. When he was about to complete his third gun, he suddenly heard five almost continuous gunshots beside him. ”Impossible!!” Torick raised his head abruptly, the Fatty next to him, who had just fired the last shot, was now putting down the gun on the table with a silly grin.

In the distance, the scorekeeper shouted in amazement: ”Five shots all hit, fifty rings!”

The whole Special Reconnaissance Battalion First Company gasped, is this Fatty even human?

Rashid felt a bit depressed, to lose the most certain event, how embarrassing, but then he thought that this monster-like Fatty would be his partner in the future, and he couldn’t help getting excited, wondering what other skills this seemingly naive Fatty possessed.

He glared at all the soldiers and shouted: ”Damn it, all of you scatter, you disgraceful bunch.” He then turned around with a smile as bright as a lotus flower and said to Fatty, ”No more, no more, brother you’re really something, I admit defeat!”

Suddenly a voice came from behind: ”You guys don’t embarrass yourselves, we’ll help with the last event of Mecha combat.” Rashid and Tian Xingjian’s faces changed simultaneously as they quickly turned to see a tall, handsome Lieutenant Colonel walking over with a group of people, behind the Lieutenant Colonel was a familiar face to Fatty.

Alice, who had been teased earlier, was now looking angrily at Fatty.
