When She Stops Being Dramatic

Chapter 196: Chapter 85: The Number One Sister of the 60s Cultural Troupe (24)

How much love could there be between the young couple?

It had long been worn away by daily arguments, leaving nothing but endless trouble.

He Qingran had been pregnant twice.

The first time, while she was still pregnant, her husband’s nephew intentionally scattered soybeans all over the floor, causing her to slip, fall, and miscarry. That little brat was only slapped twice for it, and with the old lady protecting him, the matter was simply swept under the rug!

The second child was born, but because of her poor nutrition, constant anger, and the fatigue from her mother-in-law faking illnesses that required her to serve her, the baby was born prematurely and with an Innate deficiency.

He Qingran poured her heart and soul into this child. Just buying malted milk, milk powder, eggs, and meat every month cost half of her salary.

But no one else in the family cared about the mother and child. Her husband looked down on the kitten-like baby and wanted to have more children with her.

He Qingran was stubborn. She said she would devote her life to this one son, and if he wanted more children, he could go have them with someone else!

That man might have been a coward in front of his mother, but with his wife, he was a huge chauvinist. After getting married, he was no longer willing to put any effort into her. When she retorted like that, he got angry and immediately demanded a divorce.

In his mind, a woman who had been married was ”second-hand goods.” On top of that, she’d had a child. Unless life was absolutely unbearable, how many women would dare to face the social pressure and actually divorce?

Therefore, he believed He Qingran didn’t have the guts or the standing to go through with it.

But in reality, He Qingran had long wanted to escape this oppressive marriage. She agreed on the spot. While her husband was still puffed up with stubborn pride, she didn’t waste a moment. She got the divorce certificate, packed her bags, and went home with her baby.

The man regretted it almost immediately. After all, He Qingran was beautiful, had a good job, and came from a decent family.

But the old lady was thrilled. Her son had almost been won over by his wife. Fearing he would beg He Qingran to come back, she hastily arranged for him to marry a new daughter-in-law she approved of—one who was meek and obedient.

When He Qingran returned to her family home, she discovered that without her there to protect him, her younger brother had been led astray. He had even been set up with a notoriously ill-reputed female hooligan and was forced to spend a fortune to marry and appease her.

Her father was so angry he became paralyzed and bedridden. Seeing no more advantage to be gained, her stepmother took the family’s money and left with her own child.

Later, He Qingran’s brother and sister-in-law were constantly dragged out for public criticism sessions. One ended up dead, the other insane.

He Qingran had to single-handedly care for her paralyzed father, her frail child, and her insane sister-in-law. Her life was difficult and hopeless, and she died in her forties from overwork...

Looking at the beautiful, vibrant young woman before her, Xia Zhaoyun felt a daze come over her. ’Why do people like us, who try so hard to live, always encounter such misfortunes?’

’But thank goodness, none of it has happened yet. In this life, I must ensure that I, and the people around me who I care about, can live in peace and happiness!’

She chuckled and pulled the other woman down to sit on the sofa. ”Ranran, what do you think love is? And what about marriage?”

He Qingran tilted her head. ”Love is when two people who love each other go on dates. Marriage is when you join hands to spend the rest of your lives together and have a bunch of kids to make things lively.”

Xia Zhaoyun smiled, pressing her lips together. ”Well, I think love is a matter between two people, but marriage is the union of two families.”

”Here in Xiahua, relationships between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law, and among sisters-in-law, have been tense since ancient times. Huo Tianhao’s and my situation is special, so we won’t have to deal with too much interference from elders when we get married.”

”But, Ranran, before you truly invest your feelings in someone, I hope you’ll get to know his family first. The ancients spoke of being ’well-matched in social and economic status.’ Although that sounds a bit snobbish, there’s a lot of truth in it.”

”Everyone grows up in a different environment, which shapes their habits, lifestyle, and their views on life, values, and the world. Besides, we Xiahua people have large extended families. At the very least, until your own little family gets its own place, you’ll have to live with many other people.”

”Can you imagine the chaotic mess of trivial problems after you get married? Are you prepared to deal with your future mother-in-law and sisters-in-law?”

”I don’t want you to only think about these things after you’re already married. By then, your options for backing out will be very limited. So, before you decide to date someone with marriage in mind, you should first get a general understanding of his family.”

”Only invest your emotions when the practical conditions are right.”

”They say marriage is a huge gamble. None of us can predict the future, but we can minimize the risks!”

”Of course, all of this is based on one premise: that he is worthy of you entrusting your life to him!”
