When She Stops Being Dramatic

Chapter 96: Chapter 53: The Long-Suffering Wife of the 1950s (53)

When Zhu Yun opened her eyes, she was lying in a hospital. Her ears were filled with a racket.

”Popping out a useless girl and she still needs me to wait on her. The nerve,” a sharp-tongued old woman said, clattering things around as she washed them on the small hospital balcony.

”I was still working when I had my kids. I was back to carrying a hoe right after giving birth. Haven’t seen her in half a year and she thinks she’s a city slicker now, insisting on coming to a hospital just to have a baby...”

She had no strength, and her stomach ached with a stabbing pain. She turned her head and saw a bassinet, where a newborn was gurgling and chewing on its hand.

Zhu Yun closed her eyes and opened them again. Nothing had changed. Just then, a man walked in carrying a bag of fruit.

The man saw her staring at him without blinking. He paused for a moment, then smiled, pulling an apple from the bag and offering it to her. ”Would you like one? I just washed it.”

The old woman whipped her head around, snatched the bag, and even took the apple from the man’s hand. ”What are you doing? You think we’re made of money? We can barely afford to raise the girls we have, and now you want to start feeding another?”

Zhu Yun was having trouble processing all this. She looked at the mean old woman glaring at her, then at the apologetic-looking man, and finally at the baby beside her.

’This... what happened to dying a natural death in my old age?’

’Did I get knocked down the stairs by the female lead and transmigrate?’

While her expression flickered with uncertainty and she struggled to recall the plot in her head, the man spoke up. ”Ma, where’s Lingzi?”

”Went to take a crap. Who knows if that’s true or not. Anyway, she left right after that pretty boy from the middle bed. Hmph, can’t even sit still after having a baby!” The old woman bit into an apple herself, speaking as she chewed, sending spit and juice flying everywhere...

”Ma,” the man said in a low, resigned voice, ”I know you’re not happy that Lingzi had a girl, but... she’s still my child...”

Zhu Yun was sobbing, mourning the love and marriage that had come to a premature end in her previous life. She didn’t hear the rest of their conversation. Someone else entered the room, and the tall, straight figure silhouetted against the light looked just like her young stud.

She cried even harder. With her eyes closed, tears streamed down her face like a small animal. The corners of her eyes and the tip of her nose were flushed red, and her mouth was turned down in a slight pout. She looked as pitiful as could be, her face scrunched up in sorrow until she resembled the wizened-looking newborn next to her.

”What’s wrong?” The man strode into the room, carefully helped her sit up, and, ignoring everyone else, tilted her chin up to ask anxiously.

”Are you uncomfortable somewhere? Does your stomach hurt? Are you dizzy or nauseous?”

The familiar voice was like music from heaven. Zhu Yun stared blankly as she opened her eyes. Before she could react to seeing him, she accidentally blew a snot bubble.

Chu Shenyu had been worried sick all day, and now he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

He wasn’t disgusted at all. He used a handkerchief to wipe away her tears and snot, then pulled her into his arms to comfort her.

The old woman pursed her lips and muttered, ”Little vixen,” before shoving a thermos into her son’s hands and sending him out.

”Where did you go?” Zhu Yun asked pitifully, feeling a wave of relief as she burrowed into his embrace.

She had always been healthy. Besides, she had that skill of immense strength. Even if she didn’t like to exercise, she shouldn’t have fainted just from being bumped by a pregnant woman.

That was why, upon seeing the unfamiliar surroundings, hearing the old woman’s harsh words, noticing the unattended child, and then being approached by a friendly man, she really thought she had been cast in the lead role of some sob story about a long-suffering mother.

Many stories started out just like this.

Who would’ve thought it was all just a huge misunderstanding!

”I figured you’d be waking up soon, so I went to get some food,” he said, comforting her. ”What happened just now?”

As he asked, his eyes shot a cold glare at the old woman.

The old woman waved her hands frantically. ”I... I just said my daughter-in-law left one after the other with you. I didn’t say anything else. Who knew your little wife was so jealous she’d start crying over it...”

Zhu Yun pouted. Her emotions had stabilized by now. ”I just had a nightmare. By the way, how did I end up here? What happened?”

Chu Shenyu pulled her out of his embrace and said irritably, ”What else could it be? Just a certain clueless mother-to-be who doesn’t know a thing. She’s clearly pregnant but foolishly thought she was just getting fat, so she made a big fuss about dieting and starved herself until she fainted!”

Zhu Yun blinked. She felt like she understood each word individually, but why were they so hard to comprehend when put together?

”I just ate a few bites less, how could I have fainted from hunger?” she protested weakly.

”You’re almost three months along. This is when the baby needs nutrients the most. You’re eating for two now, so how could you not get hungry? You’re also a little anemic. You need to eat more animal liver, wood ear mushrooms, and lean meat! You can’t be so willful anymore.” As Chu Shenyu spoke, he adjusted her position and handed her a mug from the bedside table, which contained brown sugar millet porridge with two hard-boiled eggs in it.
