When She Stops Being Dramatic

Chapter 94: Chapter 52: The Scorned Wife of the 1950s (52)

As for items with a moderate shelf life—like rice, flour, oil, various grains, eggs, and fruit—they were distributed from the earliest batches first. Anything that wasn’t consumed by the time it reached half its shelf life was taken by the procurement department to various factories. There, it was traded for non-perishables with longer shelf lives, such as cookies, milk powder, malted milk extract, candy, and preserved fruits.

Even these items were rotated out every six months to ensure the food in the warehouse was fresh and plentiful. Naturally, she and Chu Shenyu also made sure to regularly update the food stores in their own cellar at home.

As long as everything was well-planned, everyone’s work could proceed in an orderly fashion, responding to the organization in the most suitable way while also nipping any unfavorable developments in the bud.

Moreover, the machinery factory didn’t just consume ingredients. They had a sizable farm inherited from their original unit. Because the factory owned agricultural machinery, they were able to cultivate even more land. This not only created jobs for ten percent of the workers’ families but also produced enough food to feed twenty percent of the workforce, serving as a crucial supplement to the organization’s food rations!

This year’s new harvest was also brought to the warehouse for storage.

Zhu Yun had now formed a habit of strolling through the warehouse every morning and evening. She would gaze at the rich and diverse supply of food, reveling in the sight for a while before returning to work and her studies, reluctant to leave yet deeply satisfied.

As the principal of Kyoto First Middle School, Mr. Chu shouldered great responsibility. At his school, there had even been some teachers and students from poorer families who had to be sent to the hospital for overeating.

Knowing about his daughter-in-law’s series of effective measures, he consulted the machinery factory’s leadership. He specifically brought his school’s head chef, along with several chefs from affiliated units, to visit and learn. They mastered the essence of her methods and, upon returning, he implemented them with vigorous efficiency.

A positive wave of curbing binge-eating and unnecessary waste swept through the Capital City.

Zhu Yun now felt she was truly living the life of a prize pig, fattening up in comfort. She would saunter through the warehouse, critique her apprentices with her hands clasped behind her back in a show of authority, then pick up a pen to write a few recipes. When she had free time, she would bury her nose in a book, wait for her apprentices to bring her and her man their meals, and at night, lie back and wait to be doted on by her handsome young husband.

It was a life so comfortable, not even an immortal would trade it. As a result, she felt herself putting on weight rapidly. With the ”Autumn Tiger” heatwave in full swing, she had already filled out and could barely fit into the long-sleeved dress she had made before.

She sucked in her stomach hard, struggling to pull up the zipper. Standing before the full-length mirror set into the wardrobe, she preened, looking left and right. She had fashioned her hair into two loose centipede braids and put on a wide-brimmed felt hat her mother-in-law had someone bring over. ’What a total babe!’

After admiring herself for a moment, she continued to stick her chest out and hold her stomach in, then skipped lightly over to her husband.

Chu Shenyu was currently busy preparing a new agricultural machinery project. His desk was covered in blueprints and sketches. He now wore a pair of silver-rimmed glasses and was dressed in a white shirt and black straight-leg trousers. The shirt was buttoned primly to the top, giving him a dignified and aloof air.

She paced back and forth for a good while, but she couldn’t get her man to lift his head from the abstruse drawings of lines, arcs, and circles.

Zhu Yun knew she shouldn’t be unreasonable, but he had been sitting there all morning without giving her a single glance. ’That’s a little much, isn’t it?’

She couldn’t resist poking his thick hair with her finger, thinking, ’Don’t overwork your brain, my handsome young man, or you’ll be bald by middle age.’

”Hm?” Chu Shenyu paused, then chuckled as he looked up and saw the hour hand had moved two large increments. He took her hand and said apologetically, ”Sorry, honey. I promised to take you into the city, but I suddenly had an idea and lost track of time.”

Zhu Yun smiled virtuously and gently. ”We can go to the city anytime. Your work is important, after all.”

’When his wife acts this obedient,’ Chu Shenyu’s brow twitched, ’it means she’s about to stir up trouble.’

He had already sorted out his train of thought, so he wasn’t afraid of being interrupted. He said hesitantly, ”Honey, how about I take you up the mountain this afternoon? We can hunt for some wild pheasants and rabbits and have a barbecue when we get back?”

Zhu Yun gave him a plaintive look. ”Can I go up the mountain dressed like this?”

Chu Shenyu looked at her dress. It was a rare color-blocked combination of red, white, and yellow. The vibrant sections of color clashed sharply, making it exceptionally eye-catching.

It also had a Peter Pan collar, a cinched waist, and matching frog buttons in a modified cheongsam design, exuding elegance and refinement from every detail.

”The dress is beautiful. How come I’ve never seen you wear it before?” His eyes finally lit up as he spoke with admiration.

’I just love it when he looks so clueless!’

Zhu Yun huffed lightly, sat on the sofa, and leaned back on her hands. She swung her long, fair left leg in an arc, intending to cross it over her right with a mix of elegance and wildness. But an inharmonious sound made them both freeze in place.
