The Roach God

The rat kept him waiting four days.

Sacha marked the border on the first morning — a deliberate, legible scent pattern laid on his own side of the line, the closest thing to knocking that the grammar down here allowed — and then went home and did nothing about it, which took more discipline than the corridor run had.

He filled the days badly.

He re-walked the storage crawl twice.

He reorganised a watch rotation that had not needed reorganising and then quietly put it back.

On the third afternoon he caught himself drafting, in his head, the exact sequence of things he would say if the rat never came at all, and recognised the behaviour for what it was:

a man with nothing to do standing in a corridor outside a room where a decision is being made about him.

Thresh, who had watched him circle the same section of gallery for the better part of an hour, offered the only comment it made on the entire business.

You marked the line. It saw the mark on the first day.

I know.

Then it is not deciding whether to come. The beetle settled back down. It is deciding what you are worth arriving for. Those take different amounts of time.

On the fifth morning, the ears came up out of the service corridor’s dark and the pressure of another Sanctuary settled over him like weather.

[Contact acknowledged. Divine Creature — Echelon 3. Territory: expanded.]

Not recent, small, this time. He noticed. He suspected he was meant to.

You went east, the rat sent.

I went east.

And came back.

Something in the shape of it that wasn’t quite approval and wasn’t quite surprise.

The whiskers slowed.

Most do not go. Of those who go, most do not come back. Of those who come back, most come back with a plan. A pause. Do you have a plan.

No.

The rat’s whiskers stopped moving entirely for a full second, and Sacha understood he had said something genuinely unexpected.

Then why are you here.

Because you’ve lived next to that corridor longer than I’ve been alive in this body, Sacha sent, and I would rather ask a question badly than answer it wrong on my own.

The author’s tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

What he got, over the next hour, was worth every one of the four days.

The rat did not give him strategy.

It gave him nouns, which turned out to be more valuable, because Sacha had spent two months building a picture of the world out of Thresh’s fragments and his own guesses and had not once been able to attach a name to anything in it.

The hive three structures east had a name.

The rat rendered it as a compressed impression that arrived in Sacha’s head as something like the Ninefold Mother — a line, the rat conveyed, not a person; a succession; something that had been continuously ruling that ground through inherited flesh for longer than any current occupant could account for.

Family, in the specific sense that the ground and the bloodline were the same claim. You did not negotiate with an individual there.

You negotiated with a dynasty that would still be there when you weren’t.

The hungry one to the west had a name too, and the rat’s rendering of it carried a distinctly different flavour — sharper, more recent, faintly contemptuous.

The Sixth Ascension.

Not a family.

A doctrine.

Something that had converted rather than inherited, that recruited across species instead of breeding within one, and that had been climbing the ladder for nine years by a method the rat described in a single hard image:

they fight where they will be seen fighting.

Sacha turned that over. Because winning against something respected is worth more than winning.

Yes. The rat seemed pleased he’d got there without being walked to it. The corridor has no food worth the war. It has never had food worth the war. The corridor has audience.

And you? Sacha sent, when the shape of it had settled. Where do you sit in that?

The answer took a while to come, and when it came it was shorter than anything else the rat had said all morning.

I have been offered terms twice.

By which one?

Both.

Sacha waited.

I have not answered either, the rat sent. A neighbour who has not answered is useful to both and dangerous to neither. It is a good position.

The ears turned once toward the corridor and back, and then something Sacha would think about for a long time afterward, because it was the first thing the rat had ever said that sounded less like assessment and more like a person talking. It is a good position for exactly as long as neither of them decides to make me answer.

And when one does?

Then I will have been very clever for several years and it will not matter.

Sacha held on that longer than the conversation strictly allowed.

He had walked out here thinking of the rat as the established power in the neighbourhood — the one with patrol routes and storage and a nursery, the one whose restraint two months ago had been an act of comfortable strength.

What he was being shown instead was something considerably less comfortable: a colony holding a good position between two forces that could erase it, running out the clock on a choice it did not want to make, and fully aware that the clock belonged to somebody else.

How long have you been in that position?

Three years.

And how long do you think you have?

The rat did not answer, which was an answer.

He asked the last question on the way out, half because it had been sitting in him since the corridor and half because he wanted to see what happened.

When they catalogue this sector — do they know what I am?

The rat considered him a moment.

They know there is a Divine Creature at the west end holding a cellar. They know it took ground from something that had held it a long time. The ears flicked. They do not know what you call yourself.

The Roach God, Sacha sent, without decorating it.

He had expected nothing.

What he got was a pause of a very particular length — the pause of someone filing something away rather than reacting to it — and then:

That is a large name for one cellar.

Yes.

Do not say it east of here yet. The rat was already turning away. Names travel faster than colonies. Say it before you can survive it being heard and someone will come and look at you.
