The Roach God

Sacha didn’t sleep, technically — he’d learned in the first week that whatever this body did instead of sleep was closer to a brief, total shutdown than actual rest, a few minutes at a time snatched between watches — but he spent that night doing the closest thing to lying awake that a cockroach could manage, turning the discovery over from every angle he could think of. A boundary that confident, laid that deliberately, wasn’t the work of an animal running on instinct. It was the work of something like him: aware, deciding, choosing where its territory ended because it had decided, not because a wall happened to be there.

By morning he had a plan that was, for once, almost entirely made of caution. No bait. No ring. No risky bet this time — he’d used up his appetite for wagers on the spider, and a rival who’d clearly been running a colony longer than he had wasn’t a threat he intended to walk up to blind. He picked three scouts, Khrr among them, and gave them one job only: get close enough to read the border without crossing it, and come straight back the moment anything changed.

It took two full days of patient, silent work to build a real picture, laid out scent-mark by scent-mark the way he’d once built a mental map of a crash site from tire tracks and broken glass before he ever set foot near the wreckage. The border ran the length of a service corridor on the far side of the wall, wider than anything he’d claimed himself, marked not just at the edges but inside, in overlapping patterns that suggested layers — patrol routes, storage sites, something that might have been a nursery. Whoever ran that territory wasn’t scraping by. They were established.

What struck him more than the size of it, though, was what didn’t happen. Twice, a rat patrol passed close enough to one of his scouts that a predator running on pure instinct would have taken the easy kill without breaking stride. Both times, the patrol simply moved on. That wasn’t mercy — nothing about the border’s confident, layered scent-marks suggested a neighbor who did anything out of mercy — but it was data, and Sacha had spent enough years reading a scene for what it wasn’t doing as much as what it was. A colony that could kill his scouts for free and chose not to was a colony making a calculation, not a colony hunting.

He turned that over carefully. An established territory with real infrastructure — patrol routes, storage, a nursery — had a great deal to lose and comparatively little to gain from erasing thirty-seven roaches in a scrap of wall that produced no food worth fighting over. War only made sense if the payoff outweighed the cost, and right now he didn’t have anything worth that cost — except, possibly, one thing: proof, delivered by a dead spider, that his side could coordinate well enough to kill something stronger than any one of them. That wasn’t nothing. A rival who’d noticed it might reasonably decide that a cheap, contained war against an unknown quantity was a worse bet than a clear line and a wary peace.

And they weren’t roaches. The scent underneath the boundary markers, once Khrr had cross-checked it against everything they already knew, belonged to rats.

Rats, Sacha thought, and felt the ground shift under his plan a second time in two days. Not a monster. Not a dragon. A mid-tier problem, if his instincts about the world’s rough hierarchy were even close to right — bigger than a roach, smarter than a spider, capable of real coordination even without a spark, and now apparently with one, given the deliberateness of the border. Whatever awakened over there had a body with actual teeth to start from, size and strength baked in from day one, none of the brutal uphill climb he’d spent two weeks fighting through. It was, in other words, exactly the kind of rival the bracketed text back in the crawlspace had been quietly warning him about — a Divine Creature that hadn’t needed ten of itself just to take down a spider.

That one was new, and it told him almost nothing except that the system itself had started paying attention to the same thing he had. He turned it over, running the same cold, practical calculation he used to run before deciding whether to call for backup on a scene or handle it alone. He didn’t have backup. He had thirty-seven roaches, a lieutenant who was learning faster than he had any right to expect, and a body that could be ended by an enthusiastic sneeze.

What he didn’t have, he reminded himself, was any actual evidence that the rats wanted a fight. A border that well-maintained could just as easily mean a neighbor who valued clear lines precisely because they preferred not to spend resources defending fuzzy ones. Paranoia was cheap and felt like competence, but it wasn’t the same thing, and he’d seen enough overconfident colleagues make bad calls out of assuming the worst about a scene before they’d actually read it.

He made a decision that felt, for once, entirely unlike a gamble: he would try to be seen, deliberately, on his own terms, before the rats decided to come looking on theirs.

It had to be him, and not Khrr, or any other scout — and that wasn’t sentiment, it was a cold read of what the situation actually allowed. Whatever channel had let him sense another Sanctuary in the first place seemed to run only between sparked minds; an ordinary scout crossing that line would just be an ordinary rat’s meal, with no way to signal anything but trespass. If this was going to be a conversation instead of an incident, it needed a mind on his side capable of having one, and right now that was a very short list with exactly one name on it. The two quiet days his scouts had already logged near the border weren’t proof of safety, but they were the closest thing to evidence he had, and eleven years of walking into scenes other people were too afraid to enter had taught him the difference between a blind risk and an informed one. This was the second kind. He intended to keep it that way.
