The Roach God

The small one, the watcher, came forward first, out of the scattering crowd, and pressed close against Sacha’s side, an unmistakably deliberate gesture from a species that didn’t usually do deliberate gestures toward anything.

Something had changed in its posture since the day before; a focus in the wet black beads that passed for its eyes that simply hadn’t been there.

Another spark, Sacha realized, with a mix of relief and dread.

My bet didn’t just win us a hunting ground. It woke something else up too.

He tried, that first night, to reach it the way something in him insisted ought to be possible: pushing a thought outward the way you’d raise your voice toward someone across a room. Nothing crossed. He could feel the spark in it, unmistakable, the same warmth he felt looking inward at his own; what he couldn’t do was speak to it. It took him days of failed attempts to work out why, and the answer, when it came, was structural rather than mysterious. The thing that had let him sense another claim through a wall wasn’t a spark at all. It was a Sanctuary, a claim on ground, a thing built. Sparks recognized each other through the territory they’d anchored, the way two radio operators need towers and not just voices. Khrr had a spark. Khrr had no Sanctuary of its own, and lived entirely inside Sacha’s. Two minds inside one claim had nothing to broadcast across.

So he’d do it the slow way. No shared language yet, that would come later, the same brutal, patient way the coordination had come. But a name arrived, and it felt correct the instant he thought it, the way the right diagnosis sometimes clicks into place before the labwork confirms it.

Khrr, he decided. I’ll call you Khrr.

Word about a dead spider doesn’t travel through a roach colony the way news moves through a human town. No gossip, no retelling around a fire. But scent travels, and behavior travels, and within two days every roach that had once scattered blindly at the first vibration was instead orienting toward Sacha whenever he moved, like iron filings turning toward a magnet without understanding why. That was new. That was, he grasped with a small, grim, entirely private satisfaction, the beginning of something that functioned exactly like a religion, whether he liked the word or not.

He didn’t love the comparison. It made him think of stained glass and collection plates, not a three-centimeter insect standing in the wreckage of a dead spider’s legs. But faith, in whatever this world actually was, clearly wasn’t a metaphor. It was fuel, plain and literal, and thirty-seven surviving roaches watching him with something that wasn’t quite worship yet, but was heading there, were thirty-seven small engines starting, one by one, to turn over.

If they were going to watch him like that, he decided, he’d rather choose what they were watching than let the shape of it settle on its own. He’d been a lot of things in his old life: paramedic, son, a name on a duty roster nobody outside his crew would recognize, and none of them had ever felt like a title he’d picked for himself. This one, absurd as it was, he got to choose. The Roach God, he thought, turning the words over once, twice, the way he used to turn a new call sign over in his mouth before he trusted himself to say it on the radio. Not a joke at his own expense. Not something waiting to be earned before he was allowed to use it. Just a fact about to become true, exactly as Divine Creature had, the moment the crawlspace went quiet around him.

The days after the spider taught Sacha more about running a colony than eleven years of running an ambulance crew ever had, mostly because a colony didn’t call in sick and didn’t file complaints. It just died quietly if he got something wrong, which was, if anything, worse. He put Khrr in charge of the foraging lines almost by accident, the first time he noticed it correcting a straggler’s path before that straggler wandered into a draft that would have carried its scent straight toward the drain. Khrr didn’t have words for what it was doing. It didn’t need them. It had the same watchfulness Sacha had first noticed from across the nest, and now that watchfulness had somewhere useful to go.

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

By the end of the first week, the claimed ground had roughly tripled, not through another fight, but through the unglamorous, patient work of mapping every crack and gap within reach and deciding, deliberately, which ones were worth defending and which weren’t. Sacha had learned that lesson the hard way once already, in his old life: you didn’t spread a rescue team thin trying to save every building on a burning block. You picked the ground you could actually hold, and you held it completely, and you let the rest go for now. Territory ran on the exact same logic, whether you were commanding paramedics or cockroaches.

[Territory: expanding. Faith: threshold nearing.]

The bracketed text had stopped surprising him. It arrived the way lab results arrived on his old tablet, flat, factual, occasionally the only warning he got before something changed. He’d started to think of it less as a game system and more as a second nervous system layered over his first one, reporting on a body of subjects instead of a body of nerves.

It was Khrr who found the first real problem, nine days in, and brought it back not as words but as behavior: refusing to lead the foraging line down a specific gap in the wall that had, until then, been perfectly safe, circling back to Sacha and physically blocking his path toward it instead. Sacha followed the antenna-trail Khrr had laid rather than argue with an instinct that had already been right once. What he found, at the gap’s far end, wasn’t a predator.

It was scent. Old, deliberate, laid in patterns too regular to be accidental: a boundary marker, the same basic grammar his own roaches used without knowing they were using a grammar at all, except denser, more confident, clearly laid by something that had been doing this for a great deal longer than nine days.

Someone else is already here, Sacha understood, and felt the ground shift slightly under a plan that had, until this exact moment, assumed the only real obstacle in his path wore eight legs and hunted alone. Not just another nest. Another claim. Which means, somewhere on the other side of that wall, another spark.

He had no way yet to know if it was a Divine Creature like himself, unranked and struggling, or something already several rungs up a ladder he’d only just started to see the shape of. He had no way to know if it was hostile, indifferent, or, theoretically, though he didn’t let himself hope for it too hard, potentially useful. What he knew was that his quiet, contained little war against one spider had just become something larger, with a border, and borders, in his experience, rarely stayed quiet for long.

He pulled the foraging line back from the gap that evening, doubled the watch on it instead, and sat with Khrr in the dark, turning the discovery over like a bad set of vitals he needed to read twice before deciding how hard to push a treatment.

[Divine Creature — threshold approaching. Next rank: Demi-God. Requirement: stable, defended territory.]

One spider, Sacha thought, and I’m already being told the real test hasn’t even started. He believed it without needing convincing. He’d worked enough overnight shifts to know that surviving one bad call never made the next one easier, usually the opposite. Somewhere beyond this crawlspace, beyond this one collapsing building, other sparks had woken up in bodies that would never have needed ten of themselves just to bring down a single spider, bodies that, he suspected, could have swallowed the spider, the water heater, and the whole nest without breaking stride. And now, apparently, one of them, or something else entirely, was close enough to smell.

What he had, concretely, tonight, was thirty-seven roaches, one increasingly capable lieutenant who no longer needed to be walked through a scent trail step by step, a claimed hunting ground several times the size it had been a week ago, a single plan that had worked exactly once under fire, and a wall with something unknown breathing on the other side of it. It would have to be enough to build on. It was already more than he’d had two weeks ago, and a man who’d spent a career working with whatever showed up on scene, rather than what he wished had shown up, knew better than to waste time mourning the gap between the two.

Sacha sat with Khrr in the dark a long while after that, working through a harder lesson than scent trails and marked spots on a dirt floor: how to read a boundary you hadn’t drawn yourself, how to guess at the size and mood of a neighbor from nothing but the confidence in its scent-marks, how to prepare a nest for a conversation that might turn out to be a negotiation, or might turn out to be a second war before the first one’s dead had even finished decomposing. Somewhere on the other side of that wall, something was almost certainly doing the exact same thing to its own followers, and had been doing it a great deal longer than he had.
