The Last Silver

The first argument concerned a door.

Enna wanted it removed.

Alexander wanted it closed.

Gilgamesh, who had been holding it in place for the last several minutes, wanted someone to make a decision.

“It is a perfectly serviceable door,” Alexander said.

“It opens into the space where my generator needs to go.”

“There are wounded people on the other side.”

“Which is why I would like to install the generator before the existing supply fails.”

Gilgamesh adjusted his grip.

“I could hold the generator as well.”

Both of them looked at him.

“For a while,” he added.

From the medical compartment, Johanna called, “Remove the door. Hang a curtain. Stop discussing it beside my patients.”

Enna pointed toward the ceiling.

“Medical authority.”

Alexander stepped aside.

The door came out.

Dinraal watched Gilgamesh carry it away, ducking beneath a pipe with the practiced resignation of someone who had discovered that exceptional strength mostly meant being asked to move things.

Around them, the staging ship continued its transformation.

A cargo bay had become a recovery ward. A maintenance compartment held isolated equipment from the closure station. Two empty storage rooms were being prepared for people they had not yet rescued.

Thirty-two survivors were aboard.

One had asked three times whether the ship would be returning to the arc.

Johanna had answered him each time.

No.

He was still watching the door.

The dead engineer’s name was Ilyra Sen.

Aramaeis placed her identification plate beside the copied records.

“She held a local seal for eleven hours after the main command line failed,” he said.

Asha looked up.

“Her hours?”

“Yes.”

Nobody asked how long that had been elsewhere.

They did not yet have the information to answer.

The plate was discolored along one edge. Dinraal remembered the woman’s hand resting beneath the console, her body preserved in the quiet room while everything outside had changed.

“She tried to reopen the evacuation passage four times,” Aramaeis continued. “The station refused. There was insufficient pressure on the far side.”

Isolde studied the final entries.

“Was anyone left there?”

“Her instruments couldn’t tell.”

A little farther down the record, beneath warnings about failed communications, the engineer had entered a request manually.

If relief reaches this station, inspect the western refuge before restoring movement.

Enna leaned over the table.

“She knew somebody would eventually come in and press the large button.”

Gilgamesh, sitting beside the wall, nodded.

“There was a tempting button.”

“You are why people write these warnings.”

“I didn’t press it.”

“No. You asked what it did.”

“That seems responsible.”

For a moment, the room breathed more easily.

Then Eve brought up the station’s authority record.

Dinraal recognized the line.

Unassigned silver authority.

He disliked how quickly everyone grew quiet around it.

“What does it mean?”

“We found the corresponding maintenance rules,” Eve said. “The station recognized silver capable of supplying an independent reference. It couldn’t match you to a registered command.”

“So it gave me command?”

“No.”

She turned the display toward him.

“It permitted you to witness a local repair.”

Dinraal read the entry twice.

Aramaeis’s mouth moved faintly.

“You appear disappointed.”

“I’m relieved.”

“The higher commands require separate authorization,” Eve continued. “And physical confirmation from the other stations. Whatever the attendant meant when it said authority had returned, the machine itself wasn’t offering you the whole structure.”

Isolde leaned back.

“Good.”

Asha nodded, though reluctantly.

“It still recognized something about his silver that our instruments haven’t separated.”

“Then we keep looking,” Dinraal said. “Without promoting me.”

Enna tapped the maintenance rules.

“There is something useful here.”

She enlarged a diagram of the outer berths.

“Local repairs include releasing a docking sector.”

The arc looked different when they removed the darkness from the projection.

Its bones remained.

Three great curves. Bracing towers. Service passages crossing between them. Stations built where the loads met.

It had once been an immense piece of engineering.

Dinraal could almost imagine it new.

People standing at consoles. Workers complaining about access ladders. Somebody deciding where to put the lights.

Then Eve restored the recent survey.

Captured ships crowded the structure. Pale additions threaded through broken sections. The central opening obscured the far side.

“The outer berths were built to detach during an evacuation,” Enna said. “Whole sections could be released with ships still attached.”

Alexander folded his arms.

“Can they still?”

“Some.”

“How many?”

“One that I would trust today.”

She highlighted a narrow portion of the outer curve.

Three vessels hung from it.

A short freight hauler. A fuel tender. A passenger shuttle almost hidden beneath a service platform.

Dinraal had seen them in the survey images without noticing they shared the same supporting structure.

“One hundred and seventeen people,” Isolde said.

The figure came from the rescued workers.

Not a sensor estimate.

Names had followed it.

“The hauler has working maneuvering engines,” Enna said. “The tender has pressure but no useful thrust. The shuttle’s drive was removed.”

“So we tow the berth,” Alexander said.

“Yes.”

“And the pale connections?”

“Cut before release.”

“What happens to the people when the arc notices?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Then one of the rescued maintenance workers spoke from the doorway.

Her name was Pell. Johanna had allowed her out of the ward on the condition that she sit down wherever she went.

She was not sitting.

“The same thing that happens every time,” she said. “The doors close. The air gets colder. They tell you which compartment to report to.”

Isolde brought a chair.

Pell lowered herself carefully.

“The attendants come through the service spine. If you can shut that first, the people aboard might have time.”

“Can you contact them?” Alexander asked.

Pell looked toward the three vessels.

“The tender still has a work lamp behind its stern window.”

“A signal?”

“Sometimes we told each other when a shift was over.”

Her fingers tightened around the chair.

“We weren’t supposed to.”

Alexander studied the map for another moment.

“Show us the window.”

A courier reached the staging ships the following day.

It carried replacement medical supplies, two mechanical reference housings from the Imperial fabrication crews, and messages from Hearth.

Tiamat had recorded hers beside an orbital station console.

Behind her, someone was trying to persuade a panel to stay shut.

“The fifth station has completed another full rotation,” she said. “The sixth has developed an opinion about its cooling system. Enna will find the attached report personally offensive.”

Dinraal smiled.

“Rhiannon says you are both to eat whatever Johanna gives you. She insisted I include that before anything military.”

There was a brief pause.

Tiamat looked away from the recorder.

“No, I’m not telling them that.”

Rhiannon’s voice came faintly from somewhere beyond the image.

“You absolutely are.”

Tiamat sighed.

“She also says marriage does not make either of you less susceptible to exhaustion.”

Isolde, sitting beside Dinraal on their narrow bunk, nodded thoughtfully.

“An important discovery.”

The next message came from Aurelius.

It was shorter.

He had received Aramaeis’s preliminary report. He would help search the archive copies for Ilyra Sen and her unit.

Then his expression softened.

“The house is well. Your plant has survived our care. The First Weapon has decided your chair belongs to him until you return.”

Something shifted below the edge of the recording.

Aurelius looked down.

“Yes. I’m telling them.”

Dinraal laughed quietly.

Afterward, they watched the message from Hadrin.

His sister sat beside him.

She was small, white-haired, and visibly annoyed that he kept looking at her instead of the recorder.

“You’re supposed to speak,” she told him.

“I haven’t seen you in twenty-six years.”

“You can look at me afterward.”

Hadrin tried.

Failed.

His sister took his hand beneath the table.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Then she looked directly into the recorder.

“He arrived,” she said.

Her voice was steady until the last word.

Isolde leaned against Dinraal’s shoulder.

They watched the rest without moving.

The signal from the tender came on the third watch.

Two short flashes.

A pause.

One long.

Pell closed her eyes.

“That’s Nemi.”

The scout had approached beneath the shadow of a dead radiator, close enough to see the window without crossing the strongest distortion.

Its return signal had contained no promises about dates, no demand that anyone gather in a place the attendants might monitor.

Only a question.

Can your ship seal itself from the berth?

Nemi’s answer took twenty-three minutes to reach them in full.

The tender could.

The hauler could.

The shuttle needed someone outside to close a damaged valve.

Enna added it to the plan.

Then a second message arrived.

Pell read it.

Her face changed.

“What?” Isolde asked.

“Six people were moved to the hauler yesterday.”

“From where?”

“They don’t know.”

Alexander reached for the passenger list.

“One hundred and twenty-three, then.”

Pell kept looking at the flashes.

Dinraal understood after a moment.

“You expected us to say it was too many.”

She gave a small, embarrassed shrug.

“The shuttle’s crowded.”

“We’ll bring another pressure shelter,” he said.

Enna was already making the change.

They left the central opening alone.

Dinraal kept it at the edge of his vision as the recovery craft approached the outer berth.

Even from here, he could see movement inside it.

Something slow changed the curvature of the dark surface.

His silver tightened across his shoulders.

“Stay with the work,” Isolde said over their private channel.

“I am.”

“I was reminding myself.”

He looked toward her.

She was a bright figure against the immense structure, one hand fixed to a support while the other guided a cable into place.

He moved to help.

Behind them, the recovery craft settled inside the portable reference field. Its clock appeared beside his own.

For now, the difference was small.

Aramaeis and Enna entered the local service recess.

There was no grand command console here.

Only a narrow panel beneath a cover that had been struck so many times its hinges no longer moved.

Gilgamesh removed the cover.

Enna glanced at him.

“Carefully.”

He held up the intact panel.

“I have been listening.”

Inside the berth, Pell’s work lamp flashed through the scout relay.

The tender was sealed.

The hauler followed.

At the shuttle, Isolde reached the damaged valve.

Its wheel had been wrapped in pale growth.

“Dinraal.”

He was already beside her.

They fixed a silver brace around the pipe before cutting.

The growth recoiled.

Far along the berth, lights came on.

“All teams,” Alexander said. “Activity in the service spine.”

Enna’s voice remained level.

“Aramaeis, witness contact.”

Dinraal put his hand against the second plate.

This time, he knew what he was agreeing to.

Occupied sector.

Local utilities interrupted.

Independent support required.

Enna confirmed the generator supply.

Aramaeis confirmed the pressure seals.

The panel accepted both.

Behind the three vessels, a heavy barrier began to descend across the service spine.

Something struck it from the other side.

The barrier stopped.

“Obstruction,” Enna said.

Gilgamesh moved.

Dinraal saw him plant both feet against the frame and seize the lower edge.

“Is the obstruction important?” he asked.

“No,” Enna said.

“Good.”

He pulled.

Metal screamed through the communications channel.

The barrier dropped another handspan.

Then another.

Something pale protruded beneath it, jointed in too many places.

Gilgamesh pulled harder.

The barrier shut.

The arc cut the power.

For half a second, all three vessels went dark.

Then Enna’s generators took the load.

Windows returned to life.

“Independent supply holding,” she said.

Isolde turned the valve.

It resisted until Dinraal shifted the brace. Together, they forced it through the last quarter-turn.

A green indicator appeared inside the shuttle.

Someone behind the small window lifted both hands.

Isolde lifted one in return.

Then Alexander’s voice sharpened.

“Connections moving. Outer side.”

The pale cables along the berth were tightening.

Dinraal pushed away from the shuttle.

One cable was already dragging across the hull, seeking a new place to fasten.

He caught it with a silver hook and pulled it clear.

The sensation that came through his armor made his teeth ache.

A voice spoke across an open maintenance channel.

“Local release will result in loss of life.”

Enna severed the channel.

“Local release will result in paperwork,” she muttered. “We’re proceeding.”

Aramaeis operated the first latch.

A tremor passed through the platform.

On the projection, one of six locking points changed color.

Then a second.

The third refused.

“Mechanical jam,” Aramaeis said.

Dinraal was moving before Alexander assigned it.

“Isolde, with me.”

They reached the housing together.

The pin inside was thicker than Dinraal’s body.

Its outer end had bent under a load it had never been designed to bear.

He began forming a blade.

Isolde caught his wrist.

“Look at the brace.”

He looked.

The brace crossed the escape line.

If they cut the pin, the loaded support would swing directly into the shuttle.

“Alexander, we need the tug to take more of the weight.”

“Stand by.”

Their clocks separated another minute.

Dinraal watched the pin.

The tug engines brightened.

Slowly, the bent support eased.

“Now,” Isolde said.

They cut together.

The pin broke free.

The support moved less than a handspan.

On the display, the third latch changed color.

Then the remaining three followed.

For a moment, nothing happened.

The three ships remained where they had been held for years.

Enna checked the release indicators.

“All clear.”

Alexander gave the order.

The tug pulled.

The berth began to move.

The Questioner did not pursue them with a fleet.

It pulled back.

The last pale connection, hidden beneath the tender’s stern, stretched taut.

The whole platform rolled.

Inside the shuttle, loose objects struck a window.

Dinraal felt the change through the support beneath his feet.

“There,” Isolde said.

They dropped below the tender.

The connection was broad and flattened, fused around an old fuel trunk.

Cutting through it would open the tender.

Enna saw the same image.

“Don’t cut the pipe.”

“We know.”

Dinraal spread silver across the hull around the penetration.

Isolde extended hers beneath his, making a second seal.

For a moment, their armor joined.

Pressure gathered behind his eyes.

The darkness at the center of the arc shifted.

“Dinraal,” Alexander warned.

“I see it.”

The connection strained.

Through the silver, Dinraal felt the tender’s thin hull beginning to deform.

He wanted to pull harder.

Instead, he looked at Isolde.

“Your seal?”

“Holding.”

“Mine too.”

They severed the fuel trunk outside both seals.

The pale connection snapped away, carrying a piece of pipe with it.

The tender remained closed.

The tug accelerated.

Behind them, the dark surface pressed outward between the broken curves.

The portable reference assemblies flared.

Then the distance widened, and the pressure eased.

Alexander’s voice returned clearly.

“Recovery line crossed. All teams withdraw.”

This time, they were early.

There were one hundred and twenty-three people aboard the three ships.

They counted them twice.

Then they checked names.

One man refused to release a tool bag until Johanna assured him that nobody intended to take it.

A girl from the shuttle asked whether the lights would stay on while she slept.

Nemi found Pell in the recovery ward.

Neither said anything for a long time.

Enna remained beside the power board until a second engineer physically placed a chair behind her knees.

Gilgamesh arrived carrying the damaged access cover.

Alexander stared at it.

“Why?”

Gilgamesh looked down.

“I was told not to drop equipment during withdrawal.”

For the first time that day, Alexander laughed.

Dinraal sat beside Isolde on the deck outside the ward.

Her shoulder rested against his.

Their silver had withdrawn.

Between them, their plain wedding bands caught the corridor light.

“One sector,” he said.

“One hundred and twenty-three people,” she answered.

He nodded.

Across the passage, Aramaeis was speaking with Eve.

The detached berth had brought its local recorder with it. Unlike the closure station’s ancient records, this one had continued logging the structure around it.

They had current load measurements.

Recent movements.

Power flowing into the central mechanism.

And, buried among routine maintenance traffic, acknowledgments from one of the missing command stations.

Eve crouched beside them.

“We have a route to the western refuge,” she said. “The berth recorder mapped it during the last service cycle.”

Dinraal looked up.

“Ilyra’s refuge?”

“Yes.”

“Occupied?”

“We don’t know yet.”

She paused.

“But the door is still drawing power from its own supply.”

Aramaeis stood behind her, the dead engineer’s plate enclosed in his hand.

For once, they had left the arc with more than a warning about what might happen next.

They had taken away a piece of it.

Three ships were free.

And somewhere beyond the broken machinery, a door Ilyra Sen had asked them to inspect was still holding.
