The Last Silver

Chapter 56: A Place at the Table

The woman asked Dinraal whether her husband had spoken.

He had prepared himself for anger.

For questions about why they had fired on the survey vessel. Why they had left. Whether he could have reached the cabin before the darkness swallowed it.

He had not prepared for that.

They sat in a small consultation room aboard the medical ship. Mara occupied the chair nearest the door. Isolde sat beside Dinraal.

Across from them, the woman held a folded jacket in her lap.

“My husband,” she repeated. “Did you hear him?”

Dinraal looked at her hands.

Then he made himself meet her eyes.

“I heard a man asking for help.”

Her fingers tightened around the jacket.

“Was he hurt?”

“I don’t know.”

“You saw the ship.”

“Yes.”

“Then surely—”

“We saw shapes in the cabin,” he said gently. “We couldn’t confirm who they were. Something came out of the damaged engine. It used my name.”

The woman stared at him.

Mara leaned forward.

“Lysa—”

“Please.”

Mara fell silent.

Lysa looked back at Dinraal.

“Do you think he’s dead?”

The room seemed to contract around the question.

“I think something terrible happened aboard that ship,” he said. “I can’t tell you whether he was still alive when we saw it.”

Lysa bowed her head.

For a long time, nobody moved.

Then she unfolded the jacket.

One sleeve had been repaired at the elbow with thread a shade too dark.

“He hated this,” she said.

Dinraal waited.

“The patch. He said everyone would notice.”

A laugh escaped her and broke halfway through.

Isolde shifted closer.

When Lysa reached blindly toward her, she took her hand.

They stayed until Lysa asked to be alone.

Outside, Dinraal stood with his back against the corridor wall.

He could still hear the survey vessel.

You came back for the others.

Mara closed the consultation-room door.

“There are three more families aboard this ship,” she said.

He nodded.

“We can wait.”

“No.”

Isolde looked at him.

Dinraal rubbed a hand over his face.

“No,” he repeated, more quietly. “They’re already waiting.”

Mara studied him for a moment.

Then she led them down the corridor.

The fleet spent thirty-six hours at the outer rendezvous.

They watched their arrival point.

Inspected the hulls.

Compared independent clocks.

Engineers removed the relay workers’ shuttle navigation unit and placed it in a shielded compartment rather than reconnecting it to anything.

No unexplained contact appeared.

No instrument began answering a question before it was asked.

Eventually, Arcturus authorized the final approach.

Dinraal was asleep when the order came.

Isolde let him remain that way.

Hearth could not receive two thousand people at once.

It could receive two hundred and forty by nightfall.

Cleopatra delivered that figure with the firmness of someone who had already been asked to improve it several times.

“Beds, water, sanitation, and sufficient medical support,” she said over the transport’s display. “We can stretch meals. We cannot stretch a functioning toilet.”

Gilgamesh, standing behind Dinraal, nodded gravely.

“A frequently neglected military consideration.”

Cleopatra ignored him.

“The hospital cases come first. Families with young children next, where suitable rooms are available. Everyone else remains aboard with proper support until the next buildings are ready.”

Dinraal studied the landing schedule.

“How long?”

“Halen says eight days for the next major section. Less if the new arrivals include people who can help.”

Mara, beside him, looked up.

“They do.”

Cleopatra’s attention shifted.

“How many?”

“Builders, electricians, irrigation crews. Halden’s Reach maintained its own machinery.”

A pause.

Then Cleopatra pulled a second document into view.

“Send me their names.”

Mara hesitated.

“They need to rest.”

“Yes,” Cleopatra said. “They also need to know there will be work for them when they’re ready.”

For the first time since the evacuation, Mara looked interested in something beyond the next hour.

“I’ll ask.”

Dinraal descended with the first medical shuttle.

The landing field had doubled in size.

Temporary shelters stood beyond the storage yard. Someone had put up signs directing arrivals toward medical care, meals, and housing assignments.

Rhiannon waited beside Johanna’s surface team.

Aurelius stood farther back, giving the workers room.

Dinraal reached the bottom of the ramp and stopped.

For a moment, the ordinary sounds of Hearth felt almost impossible.

A hammer.

A vehicle reversing.

Someone complaining that the water in the washroom was cold.

Aurelius approached.

Dinraal opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The older man drew him into an embrace.

No question first.

No report.

Dinraal gripped his coat.

Behind him, Isolde was speaking to Rhiannon in a voice that sounded dangerously close to breaking.

They remained that way until a stretcher crew needed the path.

Then Aurelius stepped aside with him.

“Have you eaten?”

Dinraal nearly laughed.

“Recently enough to survive your expression.”

“That is not especially reassuring.”

“I’ll eat.”

“With me.”

He glanced toward the waiting shuttles.

Aurelius followed his gaze.

“There are people here who can unload a vessel.”

Dinraal nodded.

This time, he went.

The boy with the plant arrived on the third shuttle.

His name was Renn.

Dinraal learned it when he found him standing outside the agricultural shelter, holding the pot while a technician examined its yellowing leaves.

“It has root rot,” the technician said.

Renn looked stricken.

“Can you fix it?”

“We can try.”

“It belonged to my grandmother.”

The technician’s expression changed.

She lowered herself to his height.

“Then we’ll take very good care of it. But I need to move it into clean growing material, and it may look worse before it looks better.”

Renn considered that.

“Can I watch?”

“Yes.”

Dinraal stood aside as the technician carried the pot inside.

Isolde approached with two cups.

“His mother’s been assigned a room near the school.”

“Good.”

She handed him a cup.

He drank.

Then looked down.

“Soup?”

“You’ve been evading people carrying bowls.”

“That seems unfairly observant.”

She sipped from her own cup.

Inside the agricultural shelter, Renn began asking questions.

The technician answered the first six patiently.

Dinraal smiled into his soup.

On the second evening, Mara attended Hearth’s council meeting.

She arrived carrying a list of volunteers and the expression of someone preparing to defend them.

Cleopatra offered her a chair.

Halen took the list.

His eyebrows rose.

“You brought a structural engineer?”

“We evacuated one.”

“Two pipe fitters. A fabrication supervisor.”

He looked up.

“Where have they been?”

Mara stared at him.

“Aboard the ships.”

“Yes. Of course. Sorry.”

For the first time, she smiled.

Only briefly.

They worked through assignments.

Nobody was required to volunteer.

Everyone who did would receive meals, housing, and the same access to supplies as the existing crews.

Meret asked about the irrigation workers.

Nessa asked whether any of the evacuees had taught children.

The answer was five.

Nessa sat back as though someone had removed a considerable weight from her shoulders.

Then Mara reached the final page.

“There’s something else.”

The room quieted.

“Some of our people don’t want to unpack.”

Dinraal looked toward her.

“They’re afraid to put anything down. Afraid they’ll have to leave it again.”

No one offered an easy reassurance.

Mara rubbed her thumb along the edge of the paper.

“And some are angry.”

“With us?” Julius asked.

“With everything.”

She looked at Dinraal.

“They can be grateful you came and still hate being here.”

He nodded slowly.

“They don’t have to pretend otherwise.”

Mara held his gaze.

Then she set down the list.

“All right.”

The five relay workers changed the defense project.

Not immediately.

For two days, they slept, ate, and answered Johanna’s questions.

On the third, one of them asked to see the reference assembly.

Her name was Enna.

She had a bandage over one ear and a habit of pausing when several people spoke at once.

Dinraal met her in the workshop with Asha and Eve.

Enna walked around the assembly.

Then she crouched beside the repaired support.

“Who designed your return path?”

Asha blinked.

“The original plans came from an archive.”

“Who adapted it?”

“We did.”

Enna nodded toward a thick conduit.

“This carries the release load?”

“Yes.”

“And that sensor tells you whether it has cleared?”

Eve moved closer.

“Yes.”

Enna sat back on her heels.

“They share a reference.”

Asha’s expression changed.

Dinraal looked between them.

“Explain.”

Enna touched the conduit casing.

“You’re measuring whether this has returned to normal using something that can be affected by the same disturbance.”

“The local mechanical indicators—” Asha began.

“Are useful,” Enna agreed. “But your automatic shutdown still trusts the coupled reading.”

Silence settled over the workshop.

Eve opened the schematics.

Enna stood slowly.

“At the relay, we had a breaker showing open while current was still passing through the line.”

Dinraal remembered the five of them staying behind.

“What did you do?”

“Cut the line.”

“With what?”

“A maintenance saw. It ruined the saw.”

Gilgamesh, who had been carrying a crate past the doorway, stopped.

“I’m beginning to like these people.”

Enna looked at him.

“I’d rather have had a working breaker.”

“Reasonable.”

Asha was already moving components on the projection.

“Can you stay for an hour?”

Enna glanced at the chair beside the workbench.

“If I can sit.”

Eve pulled it out for her.

The new design used a separate mechanical reference for the emergency release.

Enna insisted on a physical indicator large enough to read through a damaged visor.

Eve insisted on two.

The machinist built three.

Nobody complained about the redundancy.

Dinraal helped install the casing and listened as people who had met only hours earlier argued over the best way to prevent a failure they all understood differently.

By evening, the assembly looked less elegant.

It also looked easier to repair.

Asha ran a hand over the new panel.

“The archive team would have opinions.”

Enna tightened a fastener.

“They’re welcome to come and share them.”

Aramaeis, standing near the doorway, laughed.

Three days later, the first group of Halden’s Reach builders moved down from orbit.

They arrived with rolled sleeves, borrowed equipment, and very little patience for the idea that they should remain idle while other people built their rooms.

Halen gave them a tour.

By noon, they had identified two ways to speed the habitat assembly.

By afternoon, they were arguing about insulation.

By supper, nobody could reliably distinguish the old construction crew from the new one without checking the names on their work assignments.

Dinraal carried a roof section into position.

An elderly man below him looked up from a brace.

“Left.”

Dinraal moved left.

“Your other left.”

He corrected.

The man secured the brace and stepped back.

Dinraal recognized the metal box beside his feet.

“Your tools.”

The man grunted.

“Told my daughter they’d be useful.”

“What’s your name?”

“Beren.”

“Good to meet you properly.”

Beren glanced at the roof section still balanced in Dinraal’s hands.

“Introductions later. Hold that.”

Dinraal held it.

Isolde came home late that night.

Dinraal had managed to prepare food.

He had also watered the plant.

She examined the soil before sitting.

“I followed the instructions,” he said.

“I know.”

“You checked.”

“I love you. I’ve also seen you interpret ‘a little power.’”

He accepted that.

They ate at the small table with their knees touching beneath it.

Outside, Hearth was growing louder.

More people meant more footsteps, more conversation, more doors opening and closing after dark.

Isolde looked toward the window.

“Nessa started an evening class.”

“For the new children?”

“For adults. One of the survey mechanics wanted to learn to read the technical manuals without asking someone to help.”

Dinraal set down his spoon.

“She asked privately?”

“He did. Nessa offered it to everyone without naming him.”

“How many came?”

“Twenty-three.”

He smiled.

Then the smile faded.

Isolde noticed.

“Lysa?”

He nodded.

“I saw her near the housing office. She asked whether we’d heard anything.”

“What did you tell her?”

“That we hadn’t.”

Isolde reached across the table.

He took her hand.

“I keep thinking about the people in the crystals,” he said. “How many we would have assumed were dead if we hadn’t found them.”

“Yes.”

“I can’t promise those nine families a rescue.”

“No.”

“But I don’t want to stop looking because the answer might be terrible.”

Isolde held his gaze.

“Then we keep their names in the search. We don’t send people back blind.”

He nodded.

After a while, she returned to her food.

Dinraal did the same.

They installed the first permanent reference station in high orbit at the end of the week.

It could not defend the whole planet.

Asha repeated that until even Gilgamesh began saying it before she could.

What it could do was provide a reliable reference near the main arrival lane, compare local disturbances against independent instruments, and help a trained team establish a stable region around incoming vessels.

After Halden’s Reach, that mattered.

The station’s working crew included three evacuees.

Enna checked the emergency release herself.

Johanna and Aurelius took the first activation shift.

Dinraal watched from the observation platform as pale light moved through the assembly’s rings.

Below them, cloud covered the continent.

Somewhere beneath it lay Hearth.

“Stable,” Eve said.

They waited.

Five minutes.

Ten.

The readings held.

Aurelius passed control to Johanna.

The field did not break.

Dinraal looked at Isolde.

She was smiling.

Arcturus entered the result into the arrival procedures.

No speech followed.

The technicians began preparing the next test.

Dinraal found that he preferred it.

The final families came down from the transports four days later.

Their housing was crowded.

Some rooms lacked shelves.

The paths between the newest buildings remained muddy, and hot water became an occasional subject of fierce public debate.

But nobody needed to sleep in a transport hold.

Mara stood beside Dinraal as the last shuttle emptied.

For a long time, she watched the passengers cross the field.

Then she opened her roster.

Two thousand one hundred and twenty-seven people had arrived.

Nine remained missing.

She checked the last household against its assigned room and closed the file.

“I thought I’d feel finished.”

Dinraal looked toward the growing town.

“I don’t think we’re going to get much of that.”

“No.”

A tired smile touched her mouth.

“Probably not.”

Renn passed them with his mother.

He carried his plant in a new pot.

Most of the old leaves were gone.

One small green leaf had opened near the base.

He stopped to show Dinraal.

“It’s growing.”

“So it is.”

“The lady said we shouldn’t put it outside yet.”

“She probably knows.”

Renn nodded solemnly and continued toward the habitats.

Mara watched him go.

Then she tucked the roster beneath her arm.

“I have a council meeting.”

Dinraal stepped aside.

“I’ve heard those can be difficult.”

“You could come.”

“I have to help move a water tank.”

She looked unconvinced.

He lifted both hands.

“Ask Meret.”

Mara almost laughed.

That evening, Asha and Eve called a small meeting in the research shelter.

On the display stood a diagram of the last survey vessel.

Beside it, they had placed the sensor records from Tiamat’s barrier.

Dinraal felt his body tighten before he sat.

Isolde settled beside him.

Asha noticed.

“We don’t need to play the voices.”

“Good,” he said.

Eve enlarged a narrow band within the readings.

“We compared this with the archived conversion studies.”

Aramaeis leaned forward.

“The thing inside the vessel?”

“Yes. It carried the same kind of connection the old reports describe in larger Ashen command organisms.”

Dinraal studied the line.

“An anchor?”

“A small, moving one,” Asha said. “We think it was trying to reach the evacuation fleet before establishing something stronger.”

Tiamat stared at the diagram.

“It stopped pushing against us.”

Eve nodded.

“When the medical vessel moved beyond a certain distance.”

“Johanna’s reference field,” Isolde said.

“We believe so.”

Dinraal looked up.

The assembly had done more than keep their instruments honest.

Asha brought up a second set of figures.

“The difference is small, but consistent. The connection weakened as it approached the stable region. It recovered when it withdrew.”

Aurelius sat back.

“So a larger array could make it harder for an anchor to take hold near the planet.”

“That is what we need to test.”

Arcturus looked toward the system map.

“How large an array?”

This time, Eve had an answer.

She placed six markers around the world.

Then more around the approach lanes.

Dinraal studied the distances.

The manufacturing work.

The crews they would need.

A few weeks earlier, it would have seemed impossible.

Now he thought of Enna at the workbench, Beren beneath the roof supports, and the teams assembling habitats faster than Halen could update his schedule.

“We’ll need the council,” he said.

“And the orbital workshops,” Asha added.

“And more operators,” Aramaeis said.

Isolde leaned forward.

“Then let’s ask them.”

Outside, Hearth’s evening lights shone across the wet paths.

Inside, they began assigning the work.
