The Last Silver

Captain Sen Var did not want to leave his passengers in another holding area.

He understood why it was necessary.

That did not make the announcement easier.

Dinraal found him outside the Morrow’s passenger compartment, reading the same inspection notice for the third time.

“How long?” the captain asked.

“The medical checks are nearly finished. Your navigation equipment will take longer.”

“The people?”

“Can transfer as soon as they’re cleared.”

“To Hearth?”

“If they want to.”

Sen Var looked up.

For several seconds, he seemed to be waiting for the rest of the instruction.

Dinraal leaned against the bulkhead beside him.

“Some may want to go back.”

“The colony still has their homes.”

“Then we’ll help them return.”

“And if they want to stay?”

“We’ll find room.”

The captain studied his face.

“You say that quite easily.”

Dinraal thought of Cleopatra’s accommodation lists, the unfinished housing terrace, and the water engineers who would have to hear about this before anyone began making promises about permanent addresses.

“I’ll probably be hearing about it later.”

Sen Var smiled faintly.

Then he folded the notice and opened the passenger door.

The survey vessel had once been called Far Lantern.

Its surviving navigator gave them the name while Johanna changed the dressing on her forehead.

“Not the passenger transport,” she added immediately. “We’ve already had that confusion twice.”

Her name was Neral.

She had spent fourteen years aboard the little survey ship.

Dinraal sat opposite her with Isolde beside him. Tiamat stood near the window, watching the quarantined vessel turn slowly beyond the medical ship.

Neral followed her gaze.

“Is she salvageable?”

“We don’t know yet,” Isolde said.

“The forward control panel is ruined.”

“Your engineer was thorough.”

“He was angry.”

A faint smile touched Neral’s mouth.

Then it vanished.

“There were twelve of us.”

Dinraal waited.

“Seven came back with you.”

“Do you know what happened to the others?”

“Two died when they took the ship. One during the first week.”

Her hands tightened around the cup in her lap.

“The last two were transferred.”

“To the carrier?”

“No. A place where they kept the survey records.”

Dinraal glanced at Isolde.

Another storage station.

Another route.

He could feel the familiar urge to reach for a map.

Neral noticed.

“Before you ask where, there’s something you need to understand.”

She set the cup down.

“They didn’t take us because we were nearby. They came looking for our ship.”

Neral asked for paper.

Eve brought it.

The navigator drew a rough outline of the Far Lantern, then marked the equipment bay beneath the main deck.

“We surveyed planets before settlement teams arrived. Atmosphere. Water. Minerals. Orbital traffic. Anything that might make a place useful or dangerous.”

She added a rectangle inside the hull.

“Our main records were stored here.”

Asha leaned forward.

“They wanted the surveys.”

“They wanted everything. But they kept returning to a particular kind.”

“Habitable worlds?” Isolde asked.

Neral nodded.

“Places that could support a colony without years of preparation.”

The room became very quiet.

Dinraal looked toward the window.

Hearth’s system had been chosen from scientific surveys.

It had seemed distant.

Empty.

A place beyond the routes their enemies already knew.

Neral watched his expression.

“They asked us to rank them.”

“Rank them how?” Eve asked.

“By where displaced people would go.”

The information reached Hearth ahead of the transports.

By the time Dinraal and Isolde landed, Arcturus had assembled the relevant survey records.

A dozen worlds hung above the operations table.

Their world was among them.

No special warning surrounded it.

No indication that the Questioner knew who lived there now.

Just a survey designation and a set of measurements.

Atmosphere.

Surface water.

Temperature range.

Mineral resources.

Everything that had made them hopeful.

Dinraal stared at the little blue sphere.

“How many copies of this existed?”

An Imperial scientist at the end of the table answered.

“Several. Survey office archives. Regional planning repositories. Expedition ships carrying updated charts.”

“The depot?”

“Possibly.”

Arcturus folded his arms.

“We should assume the enemy has the old survey.”

Cleopatra looked at the other eleven worlds.

“Does it have current settlement information?”

“Not from Neral’s account,” Eve said. “They were asking her to make predictions.”

“So it doesn’t know.”

“We haven’t established that it knows,” Eve replied.

Dinraal appreciated the distinction.

He did not enjoy it.

Isolde stood beside him, looking at the map.

“When was the last survey here before ours?”

The scientist checked.

“Several decades ago.”

“Then it knows there was a suitable world. It doesn’t know what we’ve built since.”

“Unless someone has carried that information to it,” Alexander said.

Arcturus nodded.

“We’ll review every outward route.”

Dinraal looked around the table.

“Review them. Keep the couriers moving.”

Arcturus met his eyes.

“I agree.”

They had just rescued hundreds of people from a false order.

Abandoning the real routes now would leave the next ships with nothing else to follow.

Cleopatra found him afterward.

She carried two accommodation plans and the expression of someone who had already removed several impossible options.

“One hundred and ninety-eight passengers want to remain,” she said. “The others wish to return once their transports are cleared and escorted.”

Dinraal nodded.

“We can accommodate them temporarily.”

“That sounds encouraging.”

“It is. Temporarily is doing considerable work in that sentence.”

She placed the plans on the table.

The eastern housing terrace.

An additional dormitory beside the agricultural station.

Space aboard a transport remaining in orbit.

“We’ll need another water line before opening the second row of houses.”

“Meret?”

“Already consulted.”

“Builders?”

“Halen has a schedule. Beren has opinions.”

“Food?”

“We can manage, provided the next shipment arrives when promised.”

Dinraal studied the little rectangles representing rooms.

Then he looked back at the map of suitable worlds still glowing above the other table.

Cleopatra followed his gaze.

“You’re thinking about whether bringing them down makes them less safe.”

“Yes.”

“They’ve seen the risks. We’ve told them what we know.”

“They haven’t seen this yet.”

“Then we tell them this too.”

He looked at her.

She tapped the accommodation plan.

“And afterward, we still need somewhere for them to sleep.”

They held the meeting in the unfinished assembly hall.

Wind entered through two window openings that had not yet received their glass.

Someone had moved the chairs away from them.

Mara Den sat near the front with the settlement council. Captains from several ships stood along the rear wall. Families from the Morrow and Lantern filled most of the remaining seats.

Dinraal stood beside Arcturus.

He disliked how much attention the room gave his hands.

The silver was quiet at his wrist.

He kept his fingers open.

“The Questioner has acquired surveys of habitable worlds,” he said. “This world appears in records that existed before we came here.”

A murmur passed through the hall.

He waited for it to settle.

“We have no confirmed enemy sighting in this system. We are extending our observation patrols and improving the defenses already in place.”

A man near the aisle raised his hand.

“Can it find us?”

“Yes,” Dinraal said.

The room went still.

He made himself continue.

“It may find us. I can’t promise otherwise.”

The man lowered his hand.

A woman beside him asked, “Then why stay?”

Before Dinraal could answer, Mara stood.

“For some of us, there is nowhere better to return to.”

Her voice remained steady.

“For others, there is. They should be able to choose.”

Arcturus stepped forward.

“Passage will remain available. So will escorted supply routes. No one will be required to settle here.”

The questions continued.

Shelters.

Ships.

Warning time.

Children at school.

Dinraal answered what he could and let others answer what they knew better.

At the end, an older passenger from the Lantern raised one hand.

“Does the water line still get built?”

Cleopatra looked up from her notes.

“Yes.”

The woman nodded.

“Good. I’ll help with the trench.”

Dinraal walked home alone after the meeting.

Isolde had stayed behind to speak with Nessa and the parents gathering around her.

The path was busy.

A cart carried window frames toward the hall. Two people argued beside a stack of roofing sheets. Someone had chalked measurements on the side of a new house and was trying to keep a child from improving them.

At his own gate, Dinraal stopped.

The bench stood where they had left it.

The little plant was visible through the kitchen window.

Nothing had changed during the meeting.

He had still begun looking at everything as something that could be taken away.

The First Weapon emerged from behind the house.

He approached, pressed against Dinraal’s leg, and waited.

Dinraal rested a hand on his head.

“Do you ever worry about this?”

The creature looked toward the kitchen.

“Other than dinner.”

That received no useful response.

Dinraal sat on the bench.

The First Weapon settled against his knees.

A few minutes later, Aurelius came through the gate.

“May I?”

Dinraal moved over.

Aurelius did not begin with reassurance.

He sat and watched the path beyond the fence.

At last, Dinraal said, “I wanted this place to be far enough away.”

“I know.”

“Some part of me still thought that if we chose carefully, if we didn’t make the wrong connection or trust the wrong shipment, we might remain beyond it.”

Aurelius rested his hands on his knees.

“You chose carefully.”

“It may not be enough.”

“No.”

Dinraal looked at him.

The answer hurt less than an easy promise would have.

Aurelius glanced toward the house.

“When you asked people to come here, did you promise that nothing would ever threaten them?”

“No.”

“What did you promise?”

Dinraal thought back.

The surveys.

The first landing.

The frightened people stepping down from ships.

“That we would try to build somewhere they could live.”

Aurelius nodded.

“Then keep building.”

For a while, Dinraal watched two children run past the gate.

One doubled back to wave at the First Weapon.

The creature lifted his head, considered following, and decided against it.

Aurelius smiled.

“You don’t have to love this place less because you may have to defend it.”

Dinraal looked down.

“That wasn’t working anyway.”

“No,” Aurelius said. “I didn’t think it would.”

Neral returned to the Far Lantern three days later.

She wore a pressure suit and carried an old mechanical key.

Dinraal accompanied her to the isolated berth, but the engineers took charge inside. Most of the hostile additions had been removed. Several compartments remained sealed pending examination.

Enna met them at the lock.

“You said there was a second recorder.”

“A survey backup.”

“Where?”

Neral pointed toward the deck beneath them.

“Inside the instrument keel.”

Enna stared.

“That’s outside the normal pressure hull.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the first time we lost the main archive, a power fire destroyed the copy beside it.”

Maera, waiting behind Enna, made an approving noise.

“I like whoever moved it.”

“Our old chief engineer.”

“What happened to her?”

Neral’s face changed.

“She died defending the bridge.”

Maera lowered her gaze.

“I’m sorry.”

Neral nodded once.

Then she led them to the access shaft.

The recorder contained little speech.

It had never been designed to preserve conversations.

It recorded positions, changes in local geometry, and the return timing of survey pulses.

For most of its working life, those measurements had described unremarkable stretches of space.

Then the ship had been captured.

Asha opened the first set of altered readings.

She frowned.

Opened the next.

Eve came to stand beside her.

Dinraal watched their expressions become still.

“What?”

Asha pointed to the timestamp.

“This was taken while the ship was docked inside the carrier.”

Neral nodded.

“They kept us there between deployments.”

“The recorder continued taking measurements.”

“It had its own supply.”

Eve brought up the ancient contact-chamber image beside the newer data.

Then the carrier footage.

Then the field readings from their last battle.

Dinraal felt impatience rising and held it down.

Isolde arrived while they were still comparing them.

She stood beside him.

“What have I missed?”

“An increasingly meaningful silence.”

Asha looked up.

“Sorry.”

“Please make it worth it.”

She enlarged the carrier measurements.

“When the opening formed, the recorder received returns from two different regions.”

“Through the opening?” Isolde asked.

“That’s our working explanation.”

Dinraal stepped closer.

“One of them was here.”

“Yes.”

“And the other?”

Eve looked at the measurements for a long moment.

“Somewhere with stars.”

They worked through the night in shifts.

This time, nobody had to confiscate Asha’s tablet.

She handed it over herself when the numbers stopped making sense.

By morning, they had ruled out several ordinary faults.

The second set of returns appeared during three separate crossings.

The pattern changed slightly each time.

It did not match any local reflection model they could produce.

Aramaeis studied the reconstructed points of light.

Not a picture.

A rough arrangement inferred from measurements.

“You think this is where it comes through from.”

“We think the carrier opened onto another region of space,” Eve said.

Dinraal looked at the faint points.

For months, the Questioner had seemed to press against the world from somewhere without shape or distance.

Now there might be a place on the other side.

A place with stars.

“Can we locate it?”

“Not yet,” Asha said. “Perhaps not from this alone.”

Neral leaned forward.

“What about the survey archive?”

Eve turned.

“The old deep-field charts,” Neral continued. “We carried an index aboard the ship. Some of those surveys looked far beyond settled space.”

Asha was already reaching for the recovered files.

Isolde caught Dinraal’s eye.

He knew the expression.

Wait.

Let them work.

He nodded.

The first match was wrong.

So was the second.

The third required assuming that half the recorded points were artifacts.

Eve rejected it.

By late afternoon, they had a short list of regions rather than a destination.

Then Maera found something in the maintenance log.

A position correction.

Repeated after every crossing.

She called Enna over.

Together, they checked it against the recorder’s measurements.

Neral joined them.

Her finger stopped on one line.

“That’s why we kept losing time.”

Dinraal looked up from the chair where he had finally agreed to sit.

“What?”

“Our navigation solution would be wrong after every return. Not by much. Enough that I had to rebuild the local position from the stars.”

She looked at Eve.

“It wasn’t taking us to exactly the same place.”

“Either side,” Eve said slowly.

Asha moved the projected star field.

One pattern separated from the others.

She overlaid a second crossing.

Then the third.

The distant stars held.

A nearer object shifted between them.

Something large enough to obstruct several returns.

Something all three openings had formed near.

Dinraal rose.

“A ship?”

“Too large for the carrier,” Asha said.

“A station?”

“Possibly.”

Aramaeis stepped closer to the display.

Near the center of the reconstruction, the measurements described a long, broken curve.

Along it lay smaller concentrations of reflective surfaces.

Regularly spaced.

Built.

Nobody suggested leaving immediately.

They did not have coordinates.

They did not know whether the measurements described an abandoned structure, a shipyard, or something for which they had no useful name.

But the room felt different.

The enemy had routes.

It had equipment that failed.

It had places it returned to.

Dinraal looked at Neral.

“Your engineer’s name.”

She blinked.

“What?”

“The woman who moved the recorder. What was her name?”

Neral’s mouth trembled.

“Dessa Marr.”

He repeated it quietly.

Then he looked toward the reconstruction.

“We should put that in the report.”

Neral nodded.

She sat down carefully, as though her legs had become unreliable.

Tiamat brought her a cup of water.

No one hurried her to speak again.

That evening, Dinraal returned to find Isolde at the kitchen table.

The household notebook lay open.

Beside it stood a small tray containing several seedlings.

He stopped in the doorway.

“Flowers?”

“Vegetables.”

He considered the leaves.

“Confidently?”

She looked up.

“I asked someone who knew.”

“Wise.”

He sat beside her.

On the next page of the notebook, she had sketched the garden.

A place for the bench.

A narrow bed near the fence.

Space left around the plant they had already put in the ground.

Dinraal studied the drawing.

Then he reached for the pencil.

“Here,” he said.

She watched him mark a second bed.

“What goes there?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“That is an ambitious planting plan.”

“I’m learning.”

She leaned against him.

Outside, someone was still digging the new water trench.

The work would continue in the morning.

So would the search through the stars.

Dinraal left the notebook open on the table.
