THE LAST KEEPER

The vast column of forty thousand southern spears descended from the jagged, snow-dusted ridges of Karokai Valley. The cold mountain winds gradually gave way to the crisp, golden warmth of the northern foothills, where green grass poked through melting snow.

At the front of the grand vanguard rode Squad 25, mounted upon sturdy northern sand-striders and mountain mounts. Colossal titan serpent Zaira glided smoothly beside them, her shimmering armored scales reflecting the bright morning sunlight.

Sagiri rode at the head of the formation, the dark hilt of Nokai resting comfortably against his back. The silver-veined runes beneath his skin pulsed with a steady, soothing rhythm, in complete harmony with the earth beneath his feet.

Beside him, Lira rode her gentle mare, a small woven wicker basket filled with dried medicinal herbs hanging from her saddlehorn. She smiled warmly as she watched the color return to Sagiri’s face, passing him a wooden flask of warm shyflower tea.

“Drink this, Sagiri,” Lira said softly, her grey eyes bright with care. “It will keep your strength steady while we ride.”

“Thank you, Lira,” Sagiri smiled, drinking the warm herbal brew. “Your tea always brings peace.”

Behind them, Kaka shifted in his saddle with a loud groan. “By the northern pines, my rear will be flat before we reach the capital!”

“That is because you ride like a wild boar, Kaka,” Maita teased from her grey mare. “A true warrior glides with the beast instead of crushing the saddle.”

“Crushing it?!” Kaka barked in mock outrage. “This is prime northern muscle, Maita! You southern scouts have no idea what it takes to carry real bulk!”

“Real bulk or just too many sweet pastries from the field kitchen?” Zolinka laughed beside young Ulekai. “Ulekai ate half your ration and still sits lighter than you.”

Ulekai smiled, adjusting his light bow. “The pastries in the southern camp are very good, Kaka. I can ask the cook for an extra batch tonight.”

“See? The boy respects his elders!” Kaka declared proudly, pointing a finger at Ulekai with a boisterous laugh.

Bukata rode close behind them, holding his reins with a steady hand while his bandaged ribs were kept stable by a thick leather chest harness. His broad, scarred face was relaxed, enjoying the warm breeze and the familiar sound of his squad’s bickering.

“Let him talk, Kaka,” Bukata chuckled in his deep, gravelly voice. “When we reach Alika City, the imperial cooks will prepare a feast fit for the entire Southern Host.”

Kiuga rode alongside Marshal Salka and General Zafaru, unrolling a wide parchment map of the central provinces across his saddle horn. “At our current marching pace, we will cross the northern border gate by midday and reach the central plains by tomorrow afternoon.”

“The roads are clear of enemy patrols,” General Zafaru nodded with satisfaction, his dark southern cloak billowing in the wind. “The remnants of Lanka’s forces have completely scattered, and the local garrisons have secured the main trade routes.”

“The civilian population is already returning to the fields,” Marshal Salka added, his keen eyes scanning the distant green valleys below. “For the first time in sixty years, there are no raiders or soulless legions roaming the central frontier.”

As the massive vanguard passed the first liberated farming towns along the main highway, crowds of villagers poured out of their stone cottages. Men, women, and cheering children lined the roadside, waving colorful silk ribbons and tossing fresh wildflower petals onto the path.

“Look! It is the Last Keeper and the heroes of Squad 25!” an elderly village elder shouted, bowing deeply from the edge of the road with tears in his eyes. “Blessings upon the young warriors who saved our realm!”

In past decades, the sight of forty thousand southern spearmen marching through northern territories would have caused panic and terror. Now, northern farmers ran alongside the southern riders, offering baskets of fresh bread, dried fruit, and jugs of sweet spring water.

General Zafaru’s hardened spearmen smiled warmly, accepting the gifts and dipping their bronze spearheads in respectful salute to the cheering citizens. The ancient hatred between the four lands was dissolving before their very eyes, replaced by mutual gratitude and relief.

Master Sandshade Koru rode quietly in a covered supply cart, his blind white eyes lifted toward the sky as he listened to the joyful shouts of the people. Beside him, N’varu smiled faintly, adjusting her twin curved daggers as she watched the children cheer for Zaira.

The ancient desert beast Zaira lowered her massive head as she passed the village square, letting out a soft, playful hiss that delighted the children. Several brave boys reached out and gently touched her glossy blue-black scales, cheering with excitement as she rumbled contentedly.

Lady Kiana rode gracefully atop a pure white desert sand-strider, her silver hair catching the midday light like spun silk. She looked out over the laughing crowds, a profound sense of peace settling over her elegant, noble features.

“For centuries, my ancestors in the Sekana clan were feared as phantoms of the deep dunes,” Kiana murmured to Sagiri as she brought her mount alongside his. “To see our banners welcomed with open arms by northern families is something I never thought I would witness.”

“The world has changed, Kiana,” Sagiri replied softly, looking around at the smiling faces of the villagers and his companions. “The walls between our tribes were built on fear, and fear has no power when people choose to stand together.”

By late afternoon, the grand army crossed the wide stone bridge spanning the rushing waters of the Karu River, entering the lush, rolling grasslands of the central province. The great highway widened, paved with smooth white stones that reflected the warm orange glow of the setting sun.

In the distance, rising majestically against the twilight horizon, the colossal white marble towers and gilded domes of Alika City came into view. The imperial capital stood like a radiant jewel in the center of the continent, its ancient stone walls stretching for miles across the plains.

High atop the towering battlements, the colorful banners of all five lands fluttered proudly side-by-side in the evening breeze. The golden sun emblem of Tagayia, the black blade of N’folu, the twin axes of Asaka, the silver crescent of Sekana, and the forge hammer of Molakwa waved together in flawless unity.

As the vanguard approached the outer gates, a massive contingent of the Imperial Guard rode out to meet them, led by gleaming silver armor and crimson sashes. At the front of the welcoming host rode Supreme Mandra Taziraka and Grand Marshal Senraki, their faces bright with proud anticipation.

The heavy bronze gates of Alika City swung wide open, and the deep, resonant booming of ceremonial greeting drums echoed across the vast plains. Thousands of citizens and visiting delegates packed the city walls, their thunderous cheers rising into the starlit evening sky.

“They are waiting for us,” Kiuga said, a rare, proud smile touching his lips as he folded his tactical scroll. “The Great Summit of the Five Lands is about to begin.”

Kaka grinned widely, rolling his broad shoulders as he sat tall in his saddle. “Let them wait no longer! Squad 25 has arrived to claim our place in history!”

Bukata, Maita, Zolinka, and Ulekai raised their weapons high, answering the cheers of the capital with the unified roar of their academy battle cry. Lira reached over, her fingers gently brushing against Sagiri’s hand with warm, reassuring comfort.

Sagiri looked up at the towering white gates of the capital, feeling the Five Relics pulsing in quiet, steady harmony within his chest. His spirit was calm, his heart was full, and he was ready to step into the future they had fought so hard to create.

“Forward, Squad 25,” Sagiri said with a clear, resonant voice that carried across the entire vanguard. “Let us finish what we started.”

With the ancient desert beast Zaira gliding smoothly beside them and forty thousand southern spears marching in disciplined cadence behind, the heroes rode into the radiant light of Alika City.
